Jesse Jackson Jr. Is Being Treated for Depression at the Mayo Clinic

Jesse Jackson Jr. depression treatment

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., whose disappearance from Congress last month on medical leave prompted wide speculation, is being treated for depression at the Mayo Clinic, according to a statement from the hospital.

The Illinois Democrat, 47, is undergoing “extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues,” the statement said. It did not say where Jackson had previously been staying, only that he “has arrived at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,” according to the Associated Press.

Jackson has been on medical leave since June 10, though his office did not disclose that until several weeks later. He was initially said to be undergoing treatment for “exhaustion,” but his staff later announced his condition was “more serious” than previously thought — without saying specifically what was wrong. Rev. Jesse Jackson also declined to discuss his son’s situation, saying it would be “inappropriate” to do so, but denied a report that he attempted suicide.

Amid mounting pressure from fellow lawmakers to disclose his whereabouts, Jackson’s office finally said earlier this month he was undergoing treatment for a “mood disorder.”

The Mayo Clinic statement did not provide any additional details about Jackson’s condition, Reuters reported, including whether the “gastrointestinal issues” are related to the gastric bypass surgery he underwent in 2004 for weight loss.

“Further information will be released as Congressman Jackson’s evaluation proceeds,” the statement said, noting that he and his family were “grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have been received throughout his care.”

The timing of Jackson’s medical leave has raised additional questions, as he is currently under congressional investigation for allegedly offering to raise campaign cash for then-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in exchange for being appointed to Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

Ahhh! so this is the definition of a mood disorder.

Of course the delay is telling…ie: We WERE, treating for his drug addiction, now we’re treating him for the depression that results from not having drugs.

I guess that old Christian maxim is true. We get the leader’s we deserve.

He should NOT be allowed to represent anyone in his present condition…

      “….depression and gastrointestinal issues.”

Me thinks he got a jailhouse call from Blogo demanding money for his prison commissary account or else he will spill the beans on Jr’s involvement.

That would certainly cause depression and ulcers (gastrointestinal issues) and is well within the realm of Blogo’s ethics or lack of ethics.

I think things are getting hot in the deals he struck to occupy his senate seat. I wonder why he is allowed to actually function as a senator when he is under investigation for the process of getting the seat. I would probably be feeling a little low if I were living with what he must be living with.

Depression and GI issues go hand in hand. 95% of serotonin receptors are in the gut so if serotonin regulation is involved in depression it is typical for digestive disorders to follow. It is rather disturbing to see comments that trivialize the gravity of this disease just because of the person who has it. Had he been diagnosed with a disease for a different organ the response might be different.

I have extreme bi-polar and know the nightmare this can be on occasion; but combing through the description they gave, I would say at least one part is an ulceration of his stomach or intestines. The depression part, and its intensity, reminds me of one associate who suffered a nervous breakdown, according to their diagnosis (the family asked me to come as I am their chaplain), described as having the same symptoms.

I may not care for his politic, but as a fellow human who has faced such nightmares, if that is indeed what he is going through, then may God give him a healing and stability for the future.

If Jackson sees his son as his legacy, or feels any guilt for neglecting him over the years then this has to be killing him and will be devastating to him if his son is disgraced, shamed and or sent to jail. They should put him in the same cell as Blogojevich. They might make nice butt buddies, since they’re always trying to crawl up our ass for more money and control.

Ridiculous! If he had type I diabetes would you say “god is working on his pancreas?” How would going to the rally fix that? Depression is deadly. Dysregulation of serotonin and dopamine affects not just the brain but the gut as well. Christians and even scientologists like tom cruise parade around like the brain is an organ exempt from pathologies that affect emotional state and all you have to do is be religious the right way.. That‘s like telling a diabetic that they don’t need to inject insulin, they just need to open their heart to Jesus.. makes me sick
