Jesse Jackson: Steve Jobs Would‘ve Supported ’Occupy Wall Street’

Only one day after Steve Jobs’ death, Jesse Jackson managed to align the Apple founder with the growing Occupy Wall Street movement.
Jackson began an interview on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co.” yesterday by offering condolences to the Jobs family, saying he “knew Steve over a period of time, not as a technical computer genius, but also he had an acute sense of social justice and a peace warrior. So he was a well-rounded guy, not just a computer genius we talk about today.”
When host Chris Jansing asked if Jobs would have supported the Wall Street protesters, Jackson said “no doubt about it” and then used his airtime to promote the movement.
“[Jobs] had the sense, this idea of making computers available for the common people. He was kind of the people’s people. As for the Wall Street protests, you are looking at the reaction of the abuses of Wall Street power extremes.”
“Student loan debt is bigger than credit card debt, so many youth cannot afford to go to school or they cannot stay in school. They graduate, they are without a guaranteed job and a low credit score…If we were to forgive student loan debt, it would be a big stimulus to take the economy forward….Secondly…the banks…are not lending and the home market continues to fall.”
(Although Jackson forgets that “the common people,” especially in this economy, aren’t likely to shell out the extra dough Macs command for their aesthetics and eye-catching designs, etc.—to say nothing of the fact that Apple offers financing, too…so now you can add computer debt to your student loan debt.)
And here’s an odd twist: Jesse Jackson Jr. doesn’t seem to share Dad’s tender sentiments about Jobs being for the “people.”
The U.S. representative from Illinois ranted on the House floor last April that the iPad was “probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs” and that it’s caused diminished revenue for bookstores and publishing houses, leading to store closures and payroll cutbacks:
“Why do you need to go to Barnes and Noble?” Jackson asked. “Just buy an iPad and download your book, download your newspaper, download you magazine.” Jackson also implied that the Apple creator wasn’t feeling the financial pinch: “Steve Jobs is doing pretty well.”
The Jackson Thanksgiving dinner chat ought to be a hoot.

Posted on October 7, 2011 at 12:45pmWell……. I believe this to be true…..Jobs was a lib. He may have invented some great things, and was a good human being, but he was a big time lib and I think he would be supportive of these protesters, why wouldn’t he be? Him also being a buddist would support that.

Report Post »Yes he was a capitalist, and a lib. I know that’s an oxymoron. Rush did half of his first hour yesterday on this subject. I’ll give you that, he may have been telling these protesters to suck it up and get out there and get a job, but he was still a lib. As Rush said yesterday it would have been interesting to see where he stood. He was also a huge Algore supporter. After all the years of praise Rush gave him on the air, he would not speak to Rush because of their polarized positions. I said he may have been a good man, but he was bent toward liberalism.

Posted on October 7, 2011 at 1:44pmSteve Jobs was the greatest monopolistic capitalist of our generation. He puts Carnegie, Rockefeller and the others that made their billions by overcharging for proprietary “innovation” in the back seat. Don’t get me wrong, he is up there on my idol list as are all good capitalists. He did what Gates tried to do. Gates copied him and because Jobs was too proprietary, Gates got the most toys. Like Gates original O/S, Steve might have borrowed some talent to make it at Atari.
Jesse lives on the backs of the legend of others like any other parasite. Any legend or any back will do as long as JJ gets another 3 minutes of microphone. He has no reality except the fame of others he can try to pass off as his own – him and his rainbow coalition are a waste of good air.

Posted on October 7, 2011 at 4:38pmSorry, Mr. Jackson but Steve Jobs was an entrepreneur, a capitalist, and CEO of a very large FOR PROFIT corporation. That also means he employed many thousands of people. Maybe if some of your ignorant followers would put more effort into getting an education than they do in getting a hand-out, they too might enjoy great success.

rather than diffusing the protest, this author suggests that it could be used to ‘kick the bums out’ and get rid of corruption in congress…
As a tea party member, I share this sentiment…although the 2 sides may disagree, justifiably, where the corruption stems from, and while the tea party does not conduct themselves in the same way as this ‘group’, I nevertheless find myself wanting to support people who have had enough of the corruption. Even lazy ignorant dirty hippies have a right to hate this government and if they are chanting ‘no more bailouts’, I’m all for it.

Posted on October 7, 2011 at 11:35amJackson is just another dishonest leader or just plain stupid. I keep hearing the argument that the rich want the middle class and the poor to get poorer. Now just think for a second. If the rich want to get richer, what do they need? They need more customers with more money. If the people get poorer, there is less money to spend at all the businesses. Thus, the rich lose money.
Wealth is not finite. It is not true that if someone becomes wealthier, that its because they took from someone else’s wealth. Whether the monetary supply remains the same or not, has no bearing on this. It has to do with the amount of times that money is transferred between people and businesses. Our GDP is nearly $15T. Our monetary supply is $11.6. Since the GDP is always increasing (except in a depression: which we havent been in for nearly 70 years) while the money supply remains constant, our country is always increasing in its wealth. We just need to get out there and do our part to obtain our share.
By the way, when the government takes our wealth with taxes, there is less money to create wealth. They create nothing. The government contributes almost nothing to the GDP. Being in a recession means that the GDP is not increasing at the rate of the previous quarter. Raising taxes on anyone is removing money that would add to the GDP. Thus making it harder to get out of this recession.

It is not that simple my friend. Wall Street does not have clean hands, but they are also not entirely guilty of the whole thing either. They did manipulate the system to increase profits and it came back to bite them.
This is a good, fair article on some of the influences to the system that caused the collapse.

Report Post »trolltrainer
Posted on October 7, 2011 at 2:02pmhmmm, dont know why it wont link. Here are the relevant paragraphs.
The second narrative blames Wall Street and its influence in Washington. According to this narrative, greedy bankers knowingly manipulated the financial system and politicians in Washington to take advantage of homeowners and mortgage investors alike, intentionally jeopardizing the financial system while enjoying huge personal gains. That’s the view of the six majority commissioners.”
They postulate a third scenario that includes multiple factors. They conclude:
“We agree with our colleagues that individuals across the financial sector pursued their self-interest first, sometimes to the detriment of borrowers, investors, taxpayers and even their own firms. We also agree that the mountain of government programs supporting the housing market produced distorted investment incentives, and that the government’s implicit support of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac was a ticking time bomb.
But it is dangerous to conclude that the crisis would have been avoided if only we had regulated everything a lot more, had fewer housing subsidies, and had more responsible bankers. Simple narratives like these ignore the global nature of this crisis, and promote a simplistic explanation of a complex problem. Though tempting politically, they will ultimately lead to mistaken policies.”
