Jesse Jackson: ‘We Must Revive Dr. King‘s War on Poverty’

Jesse Jackson Tells GOP Candidates to Talk about Race on MLK Day

Rev.  Jesse Jackson honored civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. by spending a night with the homeless, and encouraging GOP candidates to address racial issues.

NBC Chicago reports that Jackson awoke Monday morning on the floor of a homeless shelter on the city’s Near South Side. Jackson had visited and prayed with the homeless at the shelter Sunday night, telling NBC that the millions living in poverty in the United States is a moral disgrace and something that Dr. King understood and wanted to actively change.

“We must revive Dr. King‘s war on poverty and his Poor People’s Campaign,” Jackson told NBC Chicago. Calling Dr. King the true precursor to Occupy Wall Street, Jackson said ”Our priorities have put us in a predicament where we have somehow cushioned those on the deck of the ship but those in the hull of the ship are in big trouble.”

“It’s really desperate in these streets.”

While he is spending the day working with the poor, Jackson tells POLITICO he plans to tune in to the Fox News Channel/Wall Street Journal GOP debate from South Carolina Monday night.

“I want to hear from them — do they support Dr. King and the New South movement? Do they appreciate Dr. King’s legacy?” Jackson told POLITICO. “These candidates talk about free enterprise, but do they understand that there would be no Boeing plant in South Carolina if blacks and whites couldn’t work together? That you couldn’t have CNN with a segregated Atlanta, or a Disney World in a segregated Florida?”

“I’ve not seen one of them with African-Americans in their ads or going to an African-American church,” Jackson went on to say of the 2012 hopefuls. “It is an irony that they are having a debate on Martin Luther King Day, when all of them are running on state’s rights.”

Well, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich did in fact hold an event at an African-American Church in Jackson’s homestate of South Carolina, where the candidate was met with some hostility.

Jackson ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988.The civil-rights activist was born in Greenville, and was with Dr. King when he was assassinated in 1968.

“Jesse Jackson: ‘We Must Revive Dr. King‘s War on Poverty”

I’m for welfare to people who need it, which includes food stamps.

But has the constructiuon of the welfare state been responsible for 70% of out-of-wedlock births to blacks and an explosion of crime wherein blacks account for 12% of the population, but create 58% of all violent crime? (US Dept of Justice)

And is it this welfare society that is responsible for black failure, along with hate-mongers in the black communities who encourage black on white attacks, telling blacks they can’t get ahead, because whites are oppressing them and holding them back, instead of telling them the truth that most of them just can’t compete on a professional level without welfare and AA?

How about having a “war on poverty” where the truth is told and demands are made for these people to try to learn a trade in order to care for themselves instead of relying on the state?

Huge numbers of blacks are in prison, because they refuse to try to learn a trade, plus they find it easier to sell drugs and commit crimes than spend time learning. They like it when some black demagogue tells them their lack of achievement is some kind of nonsensical notion that whites are behind every tree plotting to keep them from succeeding.

As long as blacks keep blaming whitey for their failures, the black community will continue to deteriorate, and no amount of social benefits will change that.

I do so wish Jesse Jackson would quit riding around on the back of Dr. King. Jesse Jackson has never had an original thought in his life. He is an opportunist and puts his face in the media every chance he gets for something that is not his business (so does Obama.) Jesse Jackson would not even be known if it was not for Dr. King and his movement. I do not consider Jesse Jackson a man of honor or originality. He is a cause taker for his own aggrandizement and so transparent I doubt he could ever get elected to any serious office outside of something to do with taking up imagined racist causes. There are just as many different ethnic groups hurting in this country, but as long as someone can conjur real or imagined hurts and plead causes for many who do not deserve, it there will always be someone out there who feels justified in blaming their problems on someone else or another race, or even their own parents. It all just is boring now. Just washed over and boring. Everyone needs to pull their own weight and not wait to be pulled in some wagon by someone else.

MLK was for racial equality, it wasn’t about poverty. Poverty is color blind, it affects anyone. How about teaching people to stop sitting with their hand out, however about a hand up – stand up, get on your own two feet, feel proud of yourself as a person. Now go to a public library, go look around, read some books on things that you have an interest in. You like construction – learn about construction methods, go to yard sales and buy old used tools, clean them up and do small work around the neighborhood. Like landscaping – buy an old lawnmower, fix it up and start doing lawns around the neighborhood, then offer spring planting and pick up flowers at home depot or other places and charge to plant them. Learn electrical work and learn to run telephone and cable tv wiring, you like painting – go to the free workshops at home depot and learn techniques and then offer painting in neighborhoods. People can learn and do anything, there is nothing holding anyone back or down, they just need to stop listening to the Jessie Jacksons and Al Sharptons and listen to the Herman Cains and David Webbs

They want their and ours too. They have been taught by liars that just because they are black they are looked down on, so there are some who want to think everyone owes them something. They fell hook, line and sinker for this. They have been used by clever politicians to hate and to vote to keep the hate going. The ones who divide are the ones who are gaining. Those who are supposed to serve as government officials have their roles reversed so as to put the populace in a subservient position and are using people against people to do this. That is the only way they can stay in power. If people stopped and listened to their hearts and elders of what is right and wrong and study the Bible (KJV) they would know right from wrong and these lying politicians and opportunists could not divide the truth. God is our true leader and that is what has held this country together. His laws and goodness is what lasts. People have a tendency to be selfish, but if people are taught right from wrong and quit taking Gods commandments away from the young they will have a chance to grow in strength and grace. The way it is now, everyone is having to be badder and meaner than one another and that does not make for peace in communities. We all had better stand up for the Ten Commandments.

      @PubliusPencilman

Eisenhower signed the GOP’s 1960 Civil Rights Act after it survived a five-day, five-hour filibuster by 18 Senate Democrats, (including then Senator Lyndon Johnson).* And in 1964, Democrat President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act after former Klansman Robert Byrd’s 14-hour filibuster, and the votes of 22 other Senate Democrats, including Tennessee’s Al Gore Sr., failed to scuttle the plan. (Johnson only signed the bill when it was politically expedient for his presidency and the Democrats).*
*Parentheses content, mine. Not the author’s.

Oh yeah…One more thing…Martin Luther King was a registered REPUBLICAN. In fact, most blacks in the 50‘s and before were all registered Republican’s.

“My grandfather, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., or ‘Daddy King‘, was a Republican
and father of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was a Republican.”

      Rational Man,

Yes, many African-Americans were Republicans up into the 1960s–this dates back to reconstruction. At the time, one of the strongest factions of the Democratic Party was the Southern white male vote. However, over the course of the 1960s, the parties went through a large-sclae realignment. African-Americans began to vote Democratic, and Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” aggressively courted Southern white males disillusioned by the Democratic Party’s movement towards a civil rights agenda. The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act accelerated this realignment.

So, when you say that MLK was a registered Republican, you are talking about a party that was very different from what the current Republican party is, and the same goes for the Democrats. So please–read a book.

      @PubliusPencilman

Maybe you can help me out? Since I’m too ignorant to read a book, maybe you could explain to me when and HOW did the Republican party turn into the “racist” party??? How has any of their policies changed since the Civil War?? And how and when did the Democrats become the champions of Black people. Just because the racist Democrat KKK members and LBJ fillibustered and refused to vote for the civil rights bill until LBJ was president and could “claim” credit for it, DOES NOT mean that the Democrats suddenly had a change of heart from their history of radical racism since the Civil War. It only means that the Democrats changed their tactics to propaganda and bad policies that keep blacks people on the Democrat plantation and gained the minority vote thru the same propaganda. And many black AND white people are too stupid to even know that they have been duped………Like you for instance!
Republicans have always tried to prosper all by giving them a chance to get a job and prosper according to the individuals ability. Democrats keep people tempted and dependant on a handout, instead of a leg up and by telling lies, keeps their uninformed voting block.

Maybe try reading a book that is not written by the propagandist and actually includes real history and indisputable facts.

Have you ever heard the term, “why did you bring a knife to a gun fight”? What I mean is the first step to fighting poverty is, get a job. The second thing is that whites just go out and interview and get a job that is open. Blacks complain that the job, “Won‘t support their family or I can’t live on that”, then they say they wouldn’t get the job anyway because they will give it to some *******.
If you don’t want to be poor, make good, longterm decisions in your life, work hard at everything you do, be honest, and never look for a handout, take pride in doing it yourself.
It seems like blacks are fighting a fight that no one else is fighting. I don’t hear whites say I wont hire a black person, or we need to keep them out of jobs.
Just get out and do it, you will see the results .

Revive the war on poverty? When did it ever stop? With half the populace on some form of GOVERNMENT assistance, how can he say that? The war was lost long ago. I think that in some circles it was never intended to be won since the it was retreat from the gitgo by discouraging individual responsibility.

President Johnson began his so called “War on Poverty” when the poverty rate was 13% Decades later with more money spent on this war than all the assets of the Fortune 500 added together and now the poverty rate is 13.4% The truth is that it isn’t a war on poverty, it is a war on capitalism. Jesse Jackson is a race pimp and a poverty pimp and he is going to do anything he can to promote both. TEA! Fair Tax!

Truth of the matter is we don’t know very much on what his beliefs were on this subject. People love to puppet their words through his dead lips, but the fact of the matter was he was dead before he could express much belief one way or another on this subject. It’s kind of like when people say “Well Lincoln wanted to do X during the reconstruction of the South” but he was dead before any of those plans could be implemented. Who knows what his opinion would be after he saw how all the welfare programs that have tried and failed to bring equality turned out.

    Dear Jesse Jerkson,

Did you know that the poorest family in the USA is among the richest in the world? Yes, the poorest USA family is in the top 15% of the world‘s richest and it’s people like you that enable them to tear down the system that will set them free. We the people are no longer sitting idly by…it is quite evident.

War On Poverty, how many decades has this been a failure? Somebody needs to read and understand Einstein’s simplest and most comprehensive theory. As an African-American for commanding officer pointed out to me a couple of decades ago, “Racism is a cottage industry, and the likes of Jesse Jackson are professionals extortionists within the industry.”

War on poverty, tell your people to get off their a>> and get to work. Maybe Jesse and Sharpton should invest their money in the black community, have them start business’s make something of themselves, instead of waiting on reparations from whitey.

The sad part is that the democrats have the vote of blacks because they hung them if they did not. Learn history people. The KKK was formed by Democrats to make sure blacks (and whites for that matter) voted for Democrats. wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up.

Quack Jackson owns more slaves than the blacks did in the1800′s. Going to an African American church involves travel to another country and I wouldn’t feel safe unless I was allowed to defend myself. It’s a jungle out there!!!

Mr Jackson has no idea about the real message of MLK, to Jackson, like with Obama all that matters is the redistribution of wealth and the destruction of America.

Yes, this is coming from the man who supports keeping blacks in welfare ghettos for generations without hope of bettering themselves. So rather than help blacks reach for the sky, Jessie beats them back into the plantation to survive ignorant lives without hope. I find it hard to believe that people would see that as a “life”. But as long as they are good democrats and Vote D, they will get their monthy dole as long as they keep their mouths shut and do as they are told. Of course we could make them go to school or take a job with the city after a period of time…but the democrats won’t allow that…..cause they care……
