Jesus Christ Graces the Cover of Newsweek

Newsweek’s cover story is all about Christianity. Writer Andrew Sullivan stakes the claim that Christianity has been “destroyed” by politics, evangelists and priests. The article, which starts by examining Thomas Jefferson’s views on faith and the Bible, delves deeply into all that Sullivan sees wrong with Christianity in America.
Below, see the Newsweek cover image featuring Jesus:

After stating his belief in “Jesus’ divinity and resurrection,“ Sullivan goes on to urge a ”return to what Jesus actually asked us to do and to be.” Jefferson, who the writer claims was for a “simpler, purer, apolitical Christianity,” would have stark differences with the worldview embraced by modern-day Christianity. Here’s how he summed up the situation in America:
On one side, the Republican base is made up of evangelical Protestants who believe that religion must consume and influence every aspect of public life. On the other side, the last Democratic primary had candidates profess their faith in public forums, and more recently President Obama appeared at the National Prayer Breakfast, invoking Jesus to defend his plan for universal health care. The crisis of Christianity is perhaps best captured in the new meaning of the word “secular.” It once meant belief in separating the spheres of faith and politics; it now means, for many, simply atheism. The ability to be faithful in a religious space and reasonable in a political one has atrophied before our eyes.
While Sullivan tackles these issues and seems to call for changes to the way that Christians handle controversial issues like abortion, The Christian Watershed blog takes a different stance on his commentary, writing:
Ultimately, however, what Sullivan is calling for is nothing more than a private faith that is a step below the Social Gospel. Yet, the “Social Gospel” movement has failed and will continue to fail in every manifestation, even ones that are watered down. When we rob the Gospel of its power and reduce it to nothing more than “Take care of the poor,” then the movement will fail because it lacks the power of the Holy Spirit behind it. This is not to say that we shouldn’t take care of those who need it – I’ve been very clear on this issue in my writings – rather that we should realize that the Gospel extends beyond just helping the poor, and goes to bringing people to Christ. It also means we stand up for social justice, that we aren’t “apolitical,” but follow a politic that fits within the ideals of Christianity.
It seems that Sullivan thinks Christians should remain quiet on issues such as abortion, but would he say the same thing for Christians involved in movements to end sex-trafficking or slave-labor overseas? Should we not petition our government on these issues? Should William Wilberforce have simply shut his mouth on the issue of slavery? Should the Christian civil rights activists of the 50s, 60s, and 70s have simply lived the “way of Jesus” rather than petitioning the government and society itself to change how it viewed minorities? I’m sure that Sullivan would rightfully applaud these efforts, but in doing so he would negate his entire stance; these efforts weren’t brought about by individuals following the way of Christ (solely), but instead by entire churches mobilizing against what they saw as an injustice.
Read the rest of Sullivan’s article, below. The piece — and the hipster Jesus cover — comes at an interesting time, as Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown has been fending off reports that the Daily Best-Newsweek partnership has actually lost millions for the venture. Perhaps this was an opportunity (some may call it a ploy) to boost readership.
According to Folio, putting Jesus on a magazine cover could, as The Atlantic reports, cause a major (45 percent) increase in sales (to add to the intrigue, Sullivan wrote for The Atlantic before leaving for The Daily Beast in early 2011).

This, of course, isn‘t the first time that Son of Man has graced Newsweek’s cover. You can see seven other past issues that Jesus appeared on here. Also, it’s not the first time that a well-known individual has been Photoshopped in an interesting light. Recall Brown’s aging of Princess Diana not long ago.

My faith is simple. Jesus Christ was born, lived and died for me. I love Him.
No one will ever be a “perfect’ Christian because we all sin every day but I really do get tired of folks telling me how I should behave because I am one.

I didn’t get that from the article at all, @Momrules
I think the author has a point; too many seem to associate good fortune and positive outcomes with religious devotion. Jesus promises nothing of the sort in this life. Certainly, living according to Biblical principles may help procure good fortune materialistically, but many of His teachings do exactly what the author says: giving up our possessions and following Christ (see the example of St. Francis). Material benefit is a secondary effect, if it’s related at all.
Do any of us truly believe that God loves the rich the most and that‘s why they’re successful? And how do you feel when churches complain that they’re bankrupt while their pastors drive sports cars and have multiple houses? I think that’s what the author is getting at; these folks aren’t following Christ, they’re using Him to dupe others.
That’s what I got out of it at least. Just like the Bible, you’ll read what you will.

Good comments my friend. I too am sick and tired of these pics depicting Jesus, like some sort of long haired rock and roll freak. There is also a trend to make him look weak. IT all fits this new wave “******* jack box” christianity that has no real substance to it. The whole mega church thing, where they rock the congregation with heathen music, and then preach little weak sermons that do not offend, or preach on sin.
40 days in the wilderness does not make one look weak, it is the sort of thing that hardens people.
He physically threw the money changers out of the temple. Not something a weak person would do.

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 1:59pmMomrules. Don’t sell your salvation through Jesus Christ short – you ARE a perfect Christian if you have been washed in His blood! God no longer sees your sin, He sees Jesus in your place. Don’t confuse what the “world” defines as perfect with God’s definition. Matthew 5:28 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Perfection is attained in Christ Jesus – none other. Remember, this is a spiritual truth/concept that those outside of Christianity can not understand without the Holy Spirit. (You WILL be attacked for saying such things) I Corinthians 2:14 “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

Yeah I like to interpret the scripture my own way also. Like, for example, I’m not to keen on the parts where it tells me to give to the poor and treat my neighbor as myself, but I do enjoy that parts where it says Women are subservient and and gays should be stoned in the street.
I think picking and choosing what to follow and what not to follow are what makes Christianity great! Jesus Schmezus. He gave to the poor so I don’t have to. I can horde my wealth all I want as long as I thank him for his sacrifice!
Thanks Jesus!

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 3:30pmRight. Is odd that the picture actually is dressed like an older babyboomer from the 80s. The group that loved the show Whiney Something because it’s selfish verbally abusive tantrum throwing unappreciative meanness was just like some of them. Sure their parents bought them clothes and cars but they had to wait tables at 21, so everyone else had to pay for that horror. And their kids would have to wait because their European wine tasting vacations came first. So their kids raised themselves and some are messed up and they can’t figure out why. If that attire is supposed to be contemporary then that says a lot about the article and lack of awareness or reality. Whether featured Aol or whatever 9/10 Sullivan articles are outright prejudiced anyway.
Report Post »Also the picture potrays Jesus as a victim of international powers which is what they’d like Christians to be. He’s not! If Andrew belives in “the divinity and ressurection” shouldn’t the picture show him with a halo. But of course the article really says Christians should sit and be quiet little Christians. Shouldn’t they be standing and speaking for ALL Who Are Mistreated; And for LOVE and GOODNESS. As Jesus did and tells people to!
Also I’m tired of bigoted comments about beautiful portrayals of Jesus. Where do you think some blue blond people came from. Not just from 2000 years kidnappings for sex trade but some Jews Kurds Arabs have blue or green eyes and blonde or brown hair. Many are fair. Jesus could look any way.

If he’s basing the discussion on something that is patently false, then he can arrive at any conclusion that he wants. “The Republican base” wants a government based upon the structure explained in our founding documents, and in getting away from a government that is in control over every aspect of our lives. Christians who are a part of that base know the difference between “the kingdom of God,” and what is explained in the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. Andrew Sullivan needs to be slapped down for this crapola.

They encourage disobedience to Scripture. “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:25)
They do not recognize that the church is the personal work of Jesus Christ Himself. “…I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18)

@ usedCZARsalesman – I agree.
@ Jezreel – you wrote: “We are to be the Body of Christ.” May I ask, how you are a “body” when you aren’t connected? The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 1 Corinthians 12:21
You wrote: “I don’t believe in going to “church” on Sundays.” And yet Jesus made it his practice to attend regular worship meetings. “…and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom.” Luke 4:16
Also the early believers began meeting on Sundays to worship – as it marked the day Jesus conquered death. “On the first day of the week we came together to break bread…” Acts 20:7
How can you encourage other believers if you never meet with them? 1 Thess. 5:11
I’m curious about your statements because there are so many direct and indirect scriptures that speak to the importance of building a faith community, an “ecclesia”, a church, a body of believers who are vitally connected. We need each other. And I would submit that there are people who need you, but are missing out because of your isolation.

Here in America we have been spoiled and we haven’t needed much but there will come a day when all heck breaks loose and we “need” each other…..Don’t have to obey the law, just follow Jesus commandments: “Love God with all you heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself”.

You must have never read the New Testament if you don’t believe in a physical church. Also, Paul said that to the Phillipian church that pastors deserved to be paid but he didn‘t accept it so his motives weren’t questioned but, Paul was an evangelist, not a pastor. “Forsake not the assemblying of yourselves together.“ ”On the first day of the week (Sunday), let eveyone of you lay be them in store…….(church tithing and offerings)” Paul started churches and wrote most of the New Testament to churches. Jesus in Revelations addressed the 7 churches. Biblical neophites should not be telling everyone else what the Bible says.

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 11:45amNewsweek has been scrapping the bottom for a very long time. Andrew Sullivan would be the last troll I would accept religious advice from. This does look like an OWS person. I would envision Christ trying to get the OWS to do like the he told the harlot….get up, go they way, and sin no more. I seriously doubt he would be embracing this nonsense. He cleansed the Temple of cr*ap like those folks. Shame on Newsweek for pandering to those who want to deminish Faith by false embrace.

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 11:38amChristianity has not been destroyed by anybody. We are all responsible for ourselves whether we make good or bad decisions. The church is the gathering of people having fellowship with the others. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and died for our sins. We have the freedom to think and do what we want and if it is wrong we are held responsible whether by man or by God.
We can see the hatred in the world and what has happened in the last few years this is not a Christian thing to do but we should all love not hate, follow the ten commandants and peace would do wonders for all.

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 11:38amGreat! I agree that Christianity has been ruined by ““The Church”. This is just what we need. Let’s all take our lessons in Christianity from Newsweek. After all, they are the guardians of religious beliefs.
Someone posted on here a quote by Ghandi that said: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”, That is soo true these days.

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 11:54amthe chistian messiah lied about being buried three days and three nights… crucified the day before the sabbath (the only sabbath back then was saturday), according to John Nicodemus took him off the cross that night… and all four gospels tell us when the WOMEN went to check on him sunday morning (while it was still dark, at the break of dawn, as the sun was rising, very early in the morning AFTER THE SABBATH… SUNDAY MORNING) he was already gone…one day and parts of two nights… not three and three… game set match… then again according to Matthew he was not gone as he was mistaken for the gardener (in disguise) and told Mary to have his posse hook up with him in Gallalee (90 miles to the north of the tomb)… odd that’s not in the other three versions of what happened… read the book and stop carrying it around pretending to have read it… the movie does’t match the book.

You’re a dolt. The bible never claim Jesus was crucified on a Friday. That was invented by the Roman church. Jesus was crucified the morning before the passover that started at sundown because the jews wanted his body removed so as to not defile the holy day. Most likely, it was a Wednesday. Wed night to THurs, Thurs to Friday, Friday to Sat, he arose before daylight on Sunday. There’s your 3 days and 3 nights. The Bible names the people who seen Him and said that over 500 other people seen Him after the resurrection so that the people in Corinth could ask them about it! Man, learn something from the actual Bible than spouting nonsense you’ve been told!
