Jesus Statue Decapitated Outside of MA Catholic Church

A statue of Jesus outside of a Dorchester, Massachusetts, church has been decapitated. According to Rev. Jack Ahern of Blessed Mother Teresa of the Calcutta Church, the statue’s head was smashed off early Sunday morning.

Following the incident, the pastor discovered pieces of the head on the ground and the statue, itself, off of its base:

“Sunday morning, about three o’clock, someone saw someone smashing the head of Christ, completely decapitating Christ and pushed the statue off its base,” he said in an interview with WBZ NewsRadio 1030 this week.

CBS Boston reports that parishioners helped to pick the statue up; they tied it to a church sign so that it would be protected from further damage.

“It’s so disrespectful. There’s no respect any more,” one church member said. “I wonder how people are raised with the lack of morals, that they would even think of doing that.”

The statue is said to be beyond repair, although Ahern reports that numerous invidiously have come forward in an effort to assist in refurbishing it, should such an action be possible.

While no arrests have been made, Boston police are seeking the vandals responsible for the act.

    The person that vandalized the statue of Christ is a fool and thinks he can hurt God by attacking a statue. Even if he does not get caught, he will pay for his stupidity.

      Interesting that this vandal didn’t attack a Hindu temple (they’re filled with statues), or a Buddhist temple.

      It is NOT the image it is the WORSHIP of the image. If God did NOT want graven images why did He command Moses to make the Tabenacle with Angels? Or command Moses to make a BRONZE SERPANT and place it on a pole?
      The arguement about graven images is silly because a picture of your family or the avatar beside your name is a graven image. Mounts of animals are graven images. Better not put out that Nativity scene in your yard or the front of your church because that is a “graven image”. Again it is NOT the statue of image the God despises it is the worship.

      God says, “Thou shalt not steal”. This act is an act of theft as it will require church donations to be routed towards replacement or repair instead of helping the poor and needy.

      A statue smacks of idolatry anyway…I would suggest not replacing it.

      No offense, but your comment shows how small minded you are. First of all, what these criminals did has no justification. Secondly, the Republican party does not have a monopoly on Jesus, so when a Republican does or says something you consider un-Christian, it is no different than if a Democrat or anyone else had done the same thing. You don’t dump on Jesus because his church is full of imperfect, fallible human beings. The church is not a museum filled with perfect works of art. It is more like a hospital filled with sick people who want to get better. We don’t earn our salvation by making ourselves perfect. We accept His free gift of grace and work out our salvation in fear and trembling. It is a lifelong spiritual journey. That is the difference between true religion, as defined by Jesus, and false religion that is based on legalism and looking down on others and judging them for their sins, as defined by the pharisees.

      Many non-Catholic Christians use the passage you refer to, Exodus 21:4-5, to “prove” to Catholics that making “any graven images or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath” is detestable to God. But when this passage is read in context, it is not the making of images that is condemned but the worship of them.
      In fact,FIVE chapters later God commands the Israelites to make two golden statues of angels as part of the lid of the Ark of the Covenant (Ex 25:17-19). That’s an image of something from heaven. Then, in 1 Kings 6, God commands that graven images of flowers and palm trees be made, as well as 15-foot tall statues of cherubim. And in Numbers 21, God commands that a bronze serpent be made and uses it to heal the Israelites. It was preserved for 800 years and then destroyed when some began to worship it (2 Kgs 18:4).
      Catholics do not worship statues, because only God is deserving of adoration. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is adamant in affirming this (CCC 2112–2114). When a Catholic bows to a statue, he is not worshiping it any more than King Solomon worshiped Bathsheba when he bowed to her in 1 Kings 2:19. In other words, the honor given to images does not detract from the honor that is due to God. After all, if one member of the body is honored, the others should share in its joy (1 Cor 12:26).

      Read the Bible in context, not just reading what you want to see.

      The news stories I’ve read on this are usually labeled with “shocking” or some similar adjective.

      It’s not really shocking at all – it’s pretty normal, actually, and even Christ Himself predicted that the world would be hostile to Him and then hostile to his followers because they hated him first.

      In New England, it seems like most people express some flavor of indifference toward Christianity:
      some display apathy, some display a sort of elitist ignorance, and then there are those that display flagrant hostility and can’t wait to insult. Statistically, a small fraction of people are believers, and most of them have learned that expressing belief in Christ has its consequences up here.

      Say the words “Jesus Christ” and watch the forum trolls show up… the ones (not all) who say we Christians are so hateful and hypocritical, and then in the next sentence call us vile names and tell us that the Bible backs up their opinions. If you haven‘t even read the Bible and you’re only quoting what other people have said about it, you’ve got no business telling other people what you think it says.

      Yeah, we are hypocritical – like everyone else. That’s the whole point of Christianity. If we were righteous we wouldn’t need Jesus. Why the hatred? (I mean, I know why.)       Try reading about Deism. Some famous self-proclaimed Deists include Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Thomas Paine. Maybe you recognize those names. Read a little about Deism and you’ll see the Deist philosophy woven throughout the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Ben Franklin wrote that someone gave him a Deism-bashing book one time and when he read it, it had the opposite effect, converting him. You think because I don’t believe in your idea of God then it must be BS. Fair enough. I think that about what you believe.

      I made a U-Turn and quickly drove away.

      Where can we send donations to pay for its replacement?

      They all think they’re the only victim out there and that discriminating against their religion is the “last acceptable form of discrimination.”

      Don’t you remember the Mosque thing in New York City, and how many people were against it? That there were threats it would never be put up and if it was it would get burned down immediately?

      If this is your main sticking point with Catholic’s, then you don’t have any problem with Catholics.
      Catholics do not worship statues, because only God is deserving of adoration. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is adamant in affirming this (CCC 2112–2114).
      If someone enters your house, he should expect to find a picture of your mother. So, when someone walks into a Catholic Church—the household of God—he should not be surprised to find a picture of the mother of God, along with the rest of the heavenly family.
      In giving the Israelites a beautiful temple strewn with images (1 Kgs 6), God acknowledged the reason why he gave us our senses: to use them to worship HIM in spirit and truth.

      Was the vandalism disrespectful and offensive? Yeah, absolutely. Does it matter much in the grand scheme? No. Vengeance is God’s alone. Let Him sort it out – we’re in no position to judge. But for grace I’d be running around destroying statues of Christ and worse.

      I agree with you that the state of one’s heart is infinitely more important than a physical object.

      Well I hope you don’t have “graven images” of your family in pictures in your house, on your comp, or your phone. You better not be a hunter and have “graven images” in regards to your mounts on the wall. No statue trinkets of collectable angels or ceramic animals. You see how silly this arguement about graven images is? It is not the image itself that is bad… it is the worship of the image. In the immediate chapter after Moses receives the 10 commmandments God commands Moses to make a “graven image” of a snake to put on a pole so that anyone who was bitten would look at it and not die. God does NOT allow WORSHIP of graven images… It is the worship of the Golden Calf which made God angry.

      You do know that the “graven images” refers to things you worship? I only worship GOD in his majesty and mystery. I love my family and am ok with my hobbies. I do not worship my family and can’t even place my hobbies in a category close to my worship of GOD.

      Yes I am fully aware that a graven image is an idol (image or likeness) you worship. You surely aren’t insinuating that Catholics are worshiping this statue? What I am saying is that this statue is no different than your pictures of your family or hunting mounts was the point I was trying to get to. You worship pictures of family members as much as Catholics worship statues.
      You however did not address the FACT that God told Moses to make Cheribum for the Tabernacle or the bronze serpent on a pole (which I said was in the Next Chapter of Exodus but I was wrong it was in Numbers my bad on that). I do think you are a very charitble in your statement but I wanted to make sure that you knew that Catholics do NOT worship these statues or paintings we have in our Parishes.
      On I side note I hole heartedly agree with you that I am a very big fan of private property and hope the vandals are caught and made to pay an appropriate fine.
