Jesus Who? Christian Cross Banned from Bethlehem Souvenir Shops

Two-thousand years after Jesus Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem, the Christian cross has reportedly been banned from souvenir shops as tourists and pilgrims pour into the Holy Land for the Christmas season.

According to AsiaNews, textile shops in Jerusalem and Hebron have begun to print and sell tee-shirts “depicting the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem without the cross.”  The cross has also been removed from tee-shirts of local football teams “because of the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the Palestinian territories.”

Interviewed by AsiaNews, Samir Qumsieh, journalist and director of the Catholic television station Al-Mahed Nativity TV in Bethlehem, said: “I want to launch a campaign to urge people not to buy these products – he says – because the removal of the cross is an intimidation against Christians, it is like saying that Jesus was never crucified. “

Like every year, thousands including authorities, faithful and tourists from all over the world crowd, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem for midnight mass on the night of 24 December. It will be celebrated by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and will be attended by the highest offices of the Palestinian Authority.

Qumsieh says that the population is living these days with joy, but the situation for Christians is still dramatic. According to the journalist, the dialogue of recent years between Muslims, Christians and Jews has not changed the situation.

“In the Holy Land – said Qumsieh – the emigration of Christians is growing, even if the authorities refuse to give precise numbers. Every day there are people who flee to other countries. As Christians, we live in a constant feeling of fear and uncertainty, and if you live in constant tension and pessimism you can not plan anything.

According to the journalist, “people leave because there is no work and movement is restricted under Israeli control.” Other factors are the internal problems of Palestine, such as the clash between Hamas and Fatah, which has repercussions on the economic situation. Qumsieh points out that from 2002 to 2010 the Christian population of Bethlehem has dropped from over 18 thousand to 11 thousand people. In Gaza, after Hamas came to power in 2006, Christians have fallen by about 3,200 units, from 5 thousand to less than 1800 in 2010. Only 15,400 Christians (2% of the population) live in Jerusalem, as reported in a study by the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies. They are 50% less than the 31 thousand registered residents in 1948, when Christians accounted for 20% of the population of the city.

The reporter says that if this exodus continues there will be no more Catholics in the Holy Land and that one day the Church of the Nativity could be turned into a museum. “If there are no more Christians in the Holy Land – he says – then there will no longer be Christians anywhere.”

Meanwhile, as religious worshipers descend on the Holy Land for Christmas celebrations, the Israeli military has reportedly ordered troops deployed to the Palestinian territories to facilitate safe passage for Christian pilgrims.

I’m so sick of semites, both Muslim Arabs and Israeli Jews. Both hate Christians, both are suicidally religous, both want to take over the world. Why don’t all the christians get out of the holy land and let them all do the world a favor and destroy each other.

southernloyalty: You say that you are sick of semites. You mention Muslim Arabs and Israeli Jews. The Arabs are made up of Saudi Arabians, which are indeed Shemitic/Semitics because they are sons of Abraham through Hagar and Ishmael. But other Muslim peoples of the world are mostly made up of Hamitic races. Africans are Hamites, Iraqis are Hamites, Palestinians are ancient Philistines which are also Hamitic peoples from Egypt and the island of Crete; etc. Not all Arabs are of Shemitic/Semitic origin.
The Israelis of Modern Day Israel are Shemites/Semites, and are the children of Abraham and Sarah, and they are called Jews which is defined to mean, descendants of Judah the son of Jacob. However, there are many other tribes of Israel around the world that are no longer counted among the Israelites of Modern Day Israel.

Not to burst your bubble, but Jesus was a Jew. So were Mary and Joseph, and all the Apostles. Jesus was born, lived, and died a Jew. Jesus was NOT a Christian. The word Christian means “Christ-follower” and was first used in Antioch many years after Christ died. And it was not a compliment, either. Remember, Paul (Saul) was persecuting those early Christians before his own conversion. Those who came after him and followed his “Way” were known as Christians. Jesus came for everyone, Jew and Gentile alike. Some just chose not to follow him.

      Merry CHRISTmas!

If you can’t sell a cross (or do they mean crucifix/corpus?) in Bethlehem, where CAN you sell it? The more people pander to Islam, the faster this world will be dominated by Muslims.
To those who keep bringing up that Jesus was born in Sept (or whenever): what the hell does that have to do with the story? We all know -or should- that the real birth date of the Christ is up for debate, that early Christians chose Dec 25 for the Winter Solstice, and also adapted many pagan customs. While nice traditions, they are secondary to keeping Jesus in the heart first and foremost.

misscherryjones: What most people don’t realize is that the date December 25th belonged to the birthday of Mithras, a false god that the Romans worshiped. The Romans gave this date for the birthday of Jesus Christ when they usurped the Christian faith and mixed it with their pagan practices. If one studies ancient history, that has not been distorted, they would find that the Romans, Greeks, and the Turks are all ancient Phoenician/Canaanites. When they moved into these territories they brought their old pagan worship with them from the ancient land of Canaan. Mithras worship was very prevalent in Rome and many of the powerful Romans worshiped this false god in caverns. Many reliefs of this false god have been found among caves there and in other parts of the world. It is said that the false god worship of Mithras originated in ancient Persia. It is another form of satanic worship. Satan goes between the feminine and the masculine because he was an archangel and was neither female or male but an angel. He calls himself by many names which are feminine false goddess names, and masculine false god names. These names have changed over time because satan has to keep redefining himself as people become wise to his deceit. His whole kingdom is made up of lies and make-believe.
No amount of ignoring Jesus birth, or the fact that He is the Son of God, or removing crosses, etc. will change who Jesus Christ is. Let’s just celebrate his birthday on December 25th as we have done for ages, and save the controversy for another day. The Muslim will not honor the birthday of the Savior of the world, and the Muslim Palestinian (ancient Philistines) will not honor Jesus Christ’s birthday either, and we probably should not expect that they would. This is a time for Christians to come together and honor the birth of Messiah, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, who came from heaven to save all mankind. MERRY CHRISTMAS! :)

Bethlehem was given up on another “land for peace” deal, and is now in Palestinian hands. Predictably, the sanctity of our Savior’s birthplace to Christians was not sufficiently important to Israel.

The dirty little secret is that virtually all the available evidence has always pointed
at the harvest period of 3 BC as the focal point of the Nativity–including the possibility
    of a late summer birth.

By rejecting Luke, scholars also threw out the date of the birth Luke gives in his
Gospel. In his second chapter, Luke tells what happened the day Mary came to the
Temple for purification 40 days after the birth of Jesus. All one has to know is what
day this was. And Luke plainly names the day. In fact, he includes three statements
identifying the day. So what day was this?

Yom Kippur. The Day of Atonement. The 10th day of the seventh month of the
    Hebrew calendar.

In Luke’s time, Yom Kippur was called three things: The day of the “Fast,” the day
of the “Purification,“and the day of ”Redemption.” Luke uses all three to identify the
day Jesus was brought to the Temple. And he even quotes the Torah rule that mandates
the 40-day period for the mother to wait after the child’s birth [Lk 2:22-38].

And if there were any doubt that it was Yom Kippur, Luke tells of a woman named
Anna who had been in the Temple for a “night and day” without leaving. There was
ONLY ONE DAY A YEAR when a person could pray overnight in the Temple: Yom
Kippur. All other days, the Temple was locked at sundown.

The first clue to find out when Jesus was born is in…

Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

The rest of the clues are in the same chapter. The info you gave is not biblical.

Tower, Luke 2:37 says Anna never left the temple, but prayed there night and day. She would have been in the Women‘s Court and not in the Sanctuary or the Priest’s Court inside the Nicanor Gate. So, are you sure the Beautiful Gate was able to be closed and locked, and that it too was locked for a period each night?

The 15th of Ethanim (or Tisri) was the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles. The circumcision therefore took place on the eighth day of the Feast = 22nd Ethanim = October 6-7 (Lev. 23:33-34). So that these two momentous events fall into their proper place and order, and the real reason is made clear why the 25th of December is associated with our Lord and was set apart by the Apostolic Church to commemorate the stupendous event of the “Word becoming flesh” – and not, as we have for so long been led to suppose, the commemoration of a pagan festival.

@untameable-kate, I like your broken english “splainin.”

In Luke 1:5 the course of Abia is when Zacharias serves is priestly duties. In v. 13 he was told by Gabriel that Elisabeth was with child, (first miracle). In v. 23-26 gives more dates. V. 23 would of been June 19th – v. 24 June 24th thru Nov. 24th. In v. 26 Gabriel sent by God to tell Mary of Blessing.

Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Mary went to Elisabeth’s house in “haste” to tell her cousin of the Miracle.

      haste in Greek means: G-4710. spoude, spoo-day’;

from G-4692; “speed”, i.e. (by impl.) despatch, eagerness, earnestness:–business, (earnest) care (-fulness), diligence forwardness, haste.

The course of Abia can be found in APPENDIX 179 of the The Companion Bible (The Bullinger Bible)

September? Sorry, it changes yearly. When was Sukkoth (the Feast of Tabernacles on the fifteenth day of Tishri – the seventh month) the year Jesus was born? The Jewish and Biblical/Prophetic calendar has 360 days, therefore, Jewish holy days, the Feasts, change year-to-year. Regardless, we as a culture celebrate December 25th, which coincidentally is approximately 9 months before Sukkoth. Maybe we are celebrating Jesus’ conception, the moment Mary said yes to the Holy Spirit, and the moment He became both the Son of God and human (Emmanuel).

Country, in Luke 1:13, Gabriel does not say Elizabeth is pregnant. Verse 24 says this did not happen until after Zechariah had completed his service time at the Temple. Therefore, I think your calculations are off. No matter, a study of the “signs in the sky” at a presumed year of Christ’s birth and moving forward to find the Star, indicates the Magi very possibly arrived in Bethlehem, found the home of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, and presented their gifts on what would have been a December 25th in our calendar. If true, giving our gifts on December 25th would also have significance. Shortly thereafter, Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath.

Actually, although I sympathize with everyone about this nonsense of banning the cross in bethlehem completely, Jesus is probably a myth. But, the koran and mohammed writing down the words from gabriel via allah are as well. The old testament is a history book, or a collection of stories from the middle east in the times it was written. I think religion is a good thing when not taken to extremes or believed fanatically. Its just a set of morals to base a society upon. The 10 commandments should be enough, imo… Btw, from what I’ve read, I would much rather hang with jesus or moses than mohammed, he seems like a freak.

VIC128, I urge you to read the book “A Case For Christ”, written by Lee Strobel who was a reporter with the Chicago Tribune and a diehard atheist. I think you will find it very interesting since Strobel set out to search for facts regarding Christ. You will be surprised at what he discovers. Merry Christmas!!

Actually you’re all wrong, Jesus was born on April 3rd or possibly the 5th in fuffillment of several Jewish prophesies. And He died (or was risen) on His 40th birthday making sense of the Scripture that the Word was made Flesh and tabernaclesd among us. The book “Introduction to the 2/3rds Rule” (available on Amazon.com) pretty much settles the issue. No lie. It’s a done deal. Check it out.

What date he was born isn’t important. It’s celebrating WHY he was born in the first place. To eventually die for our sins and give us eternal life with him in Heaven, but a lot of people are starting to forget that.

Sparky101, you are correct, I miss spoke. She would have had to be at home with her husband to conceive. :) “Luke 1:23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,” The calculations dates are not from me, but from EW Bullinger who wrote the Companion Bible and these are from his notes. Christ was conceived on Dec 25th so it is a day of celebration because that is when God‘s spirit enters Mary’s wound. Isaiah 7:14. As far as when it was when the wise men came. I don’t know. Christ was probably around 2 years old because that is the age that King Herod ordered the male children up to that age to be killed.

Sparky101, Abia was a Levitcus Priest, 1 Chr 3:10. ” Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia:” The Word says Abia, not me. “Matthew 1:7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;” ( this is Joseph’s linage). There is not mistakes in God’s word.

@Stuck, Who the heck is Pastor Murray. Never heard of him. Why would so many of us study under him? Are we busy spouting off someone else’s beliefs or our own? It’s one thing to provide a link as something that supports you statement, it’s another if that is all there is. Personally, I don’t cae what some pastor says or teaches. His or her teachings, analysis, whatever, only have weight when you confirm that information with your own studies. When you bother to do that, it‘s no longer the pastor’s teachings, it’s your own analysis that was sparked by those teachings. Off subject, but that’s the problem with our education system, students are expected to absorbe and then regurgitate the teacher’s data and analysis, not absorb the facts and information and draw their own conclusions – like a good student. It sounds ike Murray is probably a good teacher – are you a good student or just a regurgitator?

Until the Oslo accords (1994), Bethlehem was 80% Christian. Since control of Bethlehem has shifted to the “Palestinian Authority”, Christians are persecuted and not safe. Safety of other religions than Islam is not permitted by Allah when Muslims have the upper hand. Its their duty to subjugate and cow the infidels.

Where does this violence in religion come from?

TO STUDY THE ANCIENT CULT-RELIGION OF BAAL EXPLAINS the divergence of Islam from Judaism and the adoption of dominating, killing, lying cheating and other anti-civilization aspects. Throughout the entire ancient world, the bull which was the machine-tractor of the ancient world was depicted and revered but only worshipped by Hamites (Assyrian, Canaanites, Southern Egyptians) Baal is recorded as the God of War/Violence/Storms/Domination. These are the root aspects that were worshipped in Medina, and when Medina conquered Mecca (which worshipped the God of Israel, as all Shemites/Midianites would), they supplanted those things into the new religion – Islam.

Precisely. Just as I was saying. The exact date was April 5, 33 AD. And again this isn‘t some theological speculation as it is for those who’ve came up with September as Jesus’ birthdate simply because it fits their particlular interpretation of Scripture. It is actually provable through a recently discovered mathematical algorithm. And along the way this same principle can be used to prove just about every tenet of Christian belief. The book is called “Introduction to the 2/3rds Rule.” And it is well worth reading. We are really in need right now of a new weapon that we can use to overcome the atheist onslaught taking place in this country and the 2/3rds Rule provides it in spades. Available at Amazon.com.
