Jewish Groups Accuse Presbyterian Church of Facilitating Anti-Israeli & Anti-Semitic Sentiment

At the same time people of diverse faiths are coming together on the issue of the contraceptive mandate, it seems there’s a divisive battle raging between Jewish organizations and the Presbyterian Church (USA). The problems between the two faith groups center upon charges from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), among other groups, that allege that the Presbyterians, through their Israel-Palestine Mission Network (a missions arm), have made anti-Zionist and anti-Jewish statements.

The JCPA, which seeks to be a unifying voice for issues pertaining to Jews, put out a press release that made its qualms with the PC(USA) known. The document, which was issued on Feb. 6, begins:

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs called on the Presbyterian Church (USA) to take concrete actions to address the anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and at times anti-Semitic content that has been all too common in the church’s Israel Palestine Mission Network (IPMN-PCUSA).  The Israel Palestine Mission Network of the PCUSA (IPMN-PCUSA) is a group chartered by the PCUSA General Assembly and advised by members of the denomination’s national staff.   IPMN-PCUSA’s policies, programs, social media and other communications are a wellspring of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel invective, according to extensive research conducted by the JCPA and the Israel Action Network, an initiative of The Jewish Federations of North America in partnership with JCPA.

Naturally, one would wonder what evidence the JCPA has that its rival is being biased against both Jews and Israel. The release continues (you can read the full list of complaints and allegations here):

For example, at an opening program of the IPMN-PCUSA annual conference, the Rev. Craig Hunter said “greed and injustice is a cancer at the very core of Zionism.”   In a 2010 letter to church delegates, the IPMN-PCUSA falsely accused the Jewish community of intimidating Presbyterians by sending a letter-bomb to the church’s headquarters and setting fire to a church. IPMN-PCUSA tweeted an article proclaiming “Jewish power + Jewish hubris = moral catastrophe of epic proportions.”  IPMN-PCUSA also has supported virulently anti-Israel resolutions including those equating Israel with Apartheid and has been a vocal supporter of the anti-Israel boycott, divestment, and sanction movement.

“We have been concerned by the transformation of the IPMN-PCUSA into a gathering place for anti-Jewish tirades,” JCPA Chair Dr. Conrad Giles said in the statement. “We cannot remain silent while a group chartered by a mainstream church tolerates language that reflects the darkest times in the Christian-Jewish encounter.  These attitudes cannot find a home in the Presbyterian Church (USA).”

The American Jewish Committee, another pro-democratic Jewish group, also sent out a similar release on the same day. “When American church leaders allow extremists in their own community to dictate the direction of church activity on an issue as complex as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they weaken the stature of the church in the eyes of all,” AJC’s director of Interreligious and Intergroup Relations said in the group’s official response.

IPMN-PCUSA, though, didn’t back down, retract or apologize as a result of these critiques. In fact, the group responded with a press release of its own on Feb. 8, writing:

For the record, the Israel Palestine Mission Network is not an anti-Semitic organization. It does oppose Israeli government policy that sustains illegal occupation and violates Palestinian human rights every day. The IPMN is also a proponent of open dialogue and debate about the issues that prevent a just peace. The truth is that the JCPA, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and other “pro-Israel” organizations do not desire open and free discussion about these issues in America, and when they don’t want to talk about the facts on the ground, they resort to slanderous smear campaigns. [...]

This year the JCPA concern comes in trying to stem the unstoppable tide of a growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Presbyterians and Methodists are leading the way in the faith community, along with many other Christian, Jewish and secular grassroots organizations across the United States, to stop profiting from the Israeli Occupation. The BDS movement is saying the government of Benjamin Netanyahu is wearing no clothes; you can’t say you want a just peace and at the same time build settlements on Palestinian land at break-neck pace.

And this is only a portion of the scathing press release (the rest can be read here). So, with neither side willing to pare down the rhetoric and angst, it seems there is a stalemate. That being said, the controversial IPMN-PCUSA Facebook page has been shut down, causing some to claim that the Presbyterian Church was well aware of the improper and allegedly offensive content that was posted. In a statement published on its web site, the church arm responded to the closure, writing:

IPMN has been a presence on social media sites Facebook and Twitter over the last eighteen months, providing links to stories on Israel and Palestine that are not easily found in the mainstream U.S. media. [...]

As our “fan base” has grown on Facebook to over 2100, so have the comments, both positive and negative. At present, Facebook does not provide a setting where fans can “like” and “share” links without posting comments that need to be monitored. Since IPMN has no paid staff, we will not be able to keep our Facebook page going, until such a time as new posting settings are made available. Until then, IPMN will post links to articles, commentary, videos, etc. on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/IPMN

The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) recaps its version of the issues that have unfolded between the two sides, inevitably placing blame on the Presbyterians regarding how they’ve handled the situation:

Presbyterian leaders were given multiple warnings about the problem before the JCPA went public with its concerns. Starting in 2009, CAMERA corresponded regularly with the denomination’s leaders in Louisville about this problem, but they did nothing even as the IPMN-PCUSA’s Facebook page became a focal point for anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic imagery and commentary. [...]

Eventually, the JCPA started gathering a collection of the hateful postings on the IPMN’s Facebook page for a report about the organization. The JCPA then started to distribute a draft version of its findings to members and leaders within the denomination, which apparently prompted the IPMN-PCUSA to delete its Facebook page.

There’s not much room for agreement here, especially considering that both sides view their opponent as discriminatory and biased. In the end, the debate is certainly a grand one that requires more in-depth scrutiny. This latest spat, though, may be setting the stage for more drama to come.

Editor’s Note: It is important to note the difference between the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Presbyterian Church in America. The former is the larger, more liberal of the two, with 2.3 million members and 11,000 congregations. PC(USA) has taken other leftist positions on issues such as gay marriage) The latter is much smaller, but is regarded as the more conservative denomination. As of 2000, it had 1,450 congregations and more than 306,000 members. There are also other denominations within the larger Presbyterian Church.

      Some sects of Judaism reject the notion of the divinity of Jesus (Yeshua). There are “some” whom are very hateful towards Christians. I love/support God’s land and his people of Israel, BUT, there is a REALITY of Anti-Christianity rethoric rooted in some Israeli cities.

      I have to say as a current presby, I have become disappointed in the presby usa over the past few months. I think its obvious they have lost conservative power in the presby, indicated by the recent change in their governing Book of Order allowing ordination of gays. After that move I was considering leaving the church. My personal faith in Jesus requires no church, however my two young children enjoy church and the musical programs they perform in. I will be talking with my minister this weekend about this new liberal minded track they are taking. I am upset that I have to talk politics with my minister but If i do not it will brew inside and that is no good for my health. Some need to be reminded that we remember the people of Palestine dancing in the streets when our towers fell. The people of Palestine have murdered and tried to destroy every country that has taken them in. They truly are a waste of sperm and egg.

      The Presbyterian Church should be more concerned about how Muslims have been targeting Arab Christians who are trying to destroy their Christian brothers and sisters instead.

      The Palestinians get the most refugee aid than another group from the U.N.

      Instead of focusing on what the Jews are doing why doesn’t the Presbyterian Church try to help the Christians in the Middle East who are under CONSTANT threat by Islamists.

      I stand in agreement on what you said. I don’t think some of the Christians realize ( meaning well or maybe just don’t care) that what they say and how they say it, that it has an impact on people who don’t believe like them.       You fail to understand that jewish faith which became christianity was all about adoption into family of God. Yeshua was the founder of the new and better covenant of omition of sins which no new sacrifices are needed.       @ZHAAN: I apologize for not articulating myself more clearly. My intended audience was the people who are engaging in the behavior I was complaining about. I didn’t at at all mean to suggest that all Christians do that. And I recognize that I have no right to tell anyone what to believe or how to express their faith or how to interpret the Bible as it concerns the end of days and the role Jews will play in that. I just mean that I am really uncomfortable with the Christian Zionist perspective on Israel to the extent that it assigns to the Jews a role that is inconsistent with the Jews’ own understanding of their relationship to YHWH. For instance, when I see Michelle Bachmann talking about Israel, I hear somebody whose interest in Israel is entirely motivated by a religious conviction that is antithetical to the autonomy of the Jewish state and the Jewish people. She supports Israel because Israel plays a role in her apocalyptic narrative of the Christian rapture, and she believes that the Jewish patriarchs and matriarchs will either become Christian or spend eternity in Hell. As a Jew, I cannot just accept that perspective.

      Fine. Just remember that the USA gives Israel, a country created of by and for a people of one religious faith in 1948, over 5 billion $$$ every year in cash and military aid. It’s been this way since 1948. There are about 6 millon Jews and over 300 million non Jews in the USA, That translates into Jews being less than 1% of the total population. This 1% has a powerful pro Israel lobby that gets what it wants for Israel by. The same Israeli lobby can also destroy anyone who questions aid to Israel by calling them anti Semitic. I have no love for the radical Palestinians, militant Islam, or any other religion that threatens our country. The Presbyterian Church USA is just another wimpy mainline Protestant Church taken over and destroyed by the left. You rightfully do not care for those who proselytize here but I bet you don’t mind those “Xians” and blindly support Israel as “God’s chosen people”. These same fools want our foreign policy to be based on the Bible and I am sure that‘s fine with you so long as it’s the Torah. I am fed up with everything that comes out of the Middles East.       I wish that Christians could understand that their “understanding” of what the term Chosen People means is generally and vastly different than what a Jew understands. EVERY HUMAN is a creation of G-d – every soul is precious. Israel was given the Torah to be a conduit to all humanity – it is an extra obligation – not a banner of superiority. In no way is a Jewish soul considered “superior” to any other human soul. Indeed, G-d is not a respector of race/creed/sex/nationality – each soul is unique and will face G-d as a unique entity. We are each responsible to G-d for ourself – and our obligation is to make the best ourself we can AND help others as they work their path. We are blessed with the Torah and this gives us insight into civility and a path towards each of us finding G-d. The Torah insists that the stranger and the Jew are subject to the SAME laws and SAME justice – for they are the SAME.
      Some Christians view Jews with such condescension – assuming that since we don’t believe the faith as they understand it we are somehow either: blind/cursed/damned/suffering so the non-Jews can get the golden ticket of salvation/abandoned by God/etc. Others label us all with the same tarnished brush – I know that Georgie Soros is biologically a Jew – but please, don‘t saddle me with this atrocious man’s evil.       Let me ask you how good is your Hebrew? Do you speak it fluently? Is it your first or second language? I have a good feeling that you can neither speak nor read and understand Hebrew. That being said, I am confident that you never heard Rabbi Yosef say what you and people like david duke say he said. Since the Rabbi is a halacha expert and has written more books than most people alive and none.of his books express anything like what you said. I would have to say that that comment was taken out of context. Now if you are going to tell me that it was reported in an Israel newspaper. I would inform you that Rabbi Yosef as a religious leader and founder of the Shas party which is a powerful force in israeli popolitics he is a constant target of the left and the secular.
      Now as far as statements said against other religions it’s fair to say that much more was said against jews throughout history and mostly because jews refuse to convert. Why is it that everyone tries to convert jews but the only people that Jews proseletize to are other jews. We never say that Christians must convert to be loved. Why do you insist jews accept a belief that goes counter to what G0d told them? Jews don’t believe that He makes mistakes and then says never mind the whole Torah that you I gave you. Jews believe He is all powerful and all knowing and wouldn’t change His mind as to how to serve Him. His word is eternal.

Here is the Quote from Haaretz.com from the “Jewish World” published in English 20/10/10 about Rabbi Ovadia Josef: “ADL Slams Shas Spiritual Leader for saying non-Jews “were born to serve Jews”..”The ADL on Tuesday condemned comments about non Jews made this past weeend by Shas Spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Josef. In a sermon given on Saturday on laws concerning what non Jews are permitted to do on Shabbat, Yosef said “Goyim (non Jews) were born only to serve us. Without that, they have no place in the world – only to swerve the people of Israel” .. Why are gentiles needed? They will work they will plow, they will reap. We will sit an enfendi and eat” According to Yosef, death has “no dominio” over nom Jews in Israel. Goiogle Ovadia Josef and you will see a lot more of his bile and gatred of the “Goyim”. From his own mouth and not invented by anti Smeites like David Duke. No, I can’t speak Hebrew.       Did you read my post? I assume you didn’t I specifically said that those “quotes” of Rabbi Yosef were probably taken out of context and that you can’t trust liberal Israeli newspapers who always look to paint him in a negative light
      That’s why I asked if you know Hebrew so that you could here the entirety of his sermon
      Note however that the very worst that they could quote out of context is that Gentiles are here to serve Jews
      As opposed to a great many Christian leaders who have said in the past that Jews should be all killed. As well as saying that Jews are subject to eternal damnation for not accepting Jesus. Then there are the many times throught Christianity’s history that Jews have been slaughtered or forced to convert. But you have the gall to say that Jews are bad because of one or two setences taken out of context of one Rabbi? Especially since this Rabbi is a prolific writer and speaker and all you have is 2 sentences to say all Jews point their judgmental fingers?
      I think that the actual way it works with people like you is that first you say “Jews are guilty” then you look for a crime to peg on them.
      How many thousands of pages were written painting jews in a bad light by Christians? How many entire speaches and plays calling for the death of jews?But to you only Jews are racist?One thing btw if Jews are racist why would they take in hundreds of Sudanese Muslims fleeing darfur when their co religionist wouldn’t take them in?

    Its not just that church…The leftists have overtaken a lot of churches and use propaganda to get the collective to buy into government becoming their religion.Look at the United Church’s website for example…..Top topics include global warming,social justice,pro,homosexuality ,and you might be immoral if you don’t support abortion…Thats just a few things I can remember off the top of my head…..oh yeah they also want their members to write their government to condemn Israel and to demand a Robin Hood tax to achieve economic justice…..I don’t know why anyone who believes in the bible would attend a church like this.

      I’m a libertarian – socially liberal and fiscally conservative – and I know that my church (Episcopal) has in many ways also gone a bit too far on the liberal end of the political spectrum with certain issues. We also have a group that is very pro-Palestinian and anti-American. However, I would not fit in with an evangelical denomination (I don’t believe in an inerrant Bible, and I’m fine with homosexuality) and therefore it’s better for me to stay with the Episcopal church, which still has some conservatives attending. I hope to bring more libertarian thought to my denomination, rather than abandoning it entirely to well-meaning but misguided socialists.

    FYI — PC-USA has always been liberal. The pres church split in the 1970s into liberal and conservative denominations. Many PC-USA churches don’t believe Christ is God and is the only way to be saved. On the other hand, the two other very similar Presbyterian denominations are bible-believing and very conservative (Presbyterian Church in America and Evangelical Prebyterian Church).

    The underlying issue with these protestant churches is their belief that the God has forsaken the Jews and His blessing now reside on the Church, themselves. Much like the Catholic belief, they see Israel as a thorn in the side of Palestine. Incorrect Bible teachings has lead them down the path of ignoring God’s covenant with Israel. Errant Biblical understanding has also lead them to ignore history. The earlier years of the restored country of Israel, the land they lived was called Palestine. There was no Palestinian people or country and there hadn’t been long before the Crusades Era. To infer that they have taken someone else country is just wrong history. The problem with the Arabic people in the land of Palestine, is they cannot figure out how to create a country within the land they live, and live in harmony with their surrounding neighbor, Israel. These protestant Churches are at odds with God on this issue.

      SOME Protestants believe that, but many do not. The part of Christianity that believes in a Rapture, Great Tribulation, and Millenial Reign do not believe God has forsaken Israel. And that is a HUGE segment of Protestantism.

      I don’t know where you get your information that Catholics see Israel as a thorn in the side of the Palestinians, but through all my years of Catholic education in 4 different schools, we were taught just the opposite, that the Hebrews are our brothers and sisters and God’s chosen people.

      Charjan, I think the term your looking for is replacement theology. This is where many denominations pass along their belief that the Jewish people made HaShem so mad that he replaced the salvation of Jews with the salvation of the Christians. The Torah is HaShem’s covenant with his people. There is no one better than the other we all have our destiny to fulfill here on earth and whatever will be, will be, in the next life. Also, I should remind you that it was European and American antisemitism that encouraged many Jews to become Zionists. Ever hear of the Dreyfus Affair? That event was what inspired Theodore Herzl.

      By the way, Rose, the percentage of Arab-Israeli CITIZENS (not simply residents) is nearly 20%, which is a higher percentage than the percentage of African-Americans and Latino-Americans in the US. Over one-and-one-half million of Israel’s citizens are ARAB. When you consider what the above poll says about this, it makes it sound like they’re living rather well under Israeli SUBJUGATION.

After EVERY bombing in Israel caused by your terrorist friends in Hamas etc. there were crews of Israelis who would pick through the wreckage and carnage in order to retrieve every fragment of human remains for a proper burial.     Zionism, inasmuch as its goal is the establishment of a state which is predominately controlled by JEWISH ethnic and religious rule, regardless of demographic conditions in the territory, indefinitely, is by definition racist in its intent.

    IF, on the other hand, by “Zionism” you merely mean the creation of a secular democratic state (Israel) in which Jews have every right to live and be treated equally under the law as any other person living under Israeli laws, then that’s perfectly acceptable and not racist.

      2) Everything I’ve said is morally applicable to ANY country. ANY country which makes racial/religious qualifications to have political power is doing something that is wrong, something politically untenable and undesirable. Arab states have their own fair share of problems, but that’s not the matter under discussion, and it doesn‘t change or excuse Israel’s faults.

      The Zionist idea came into existence as a result of Jews not being treated equally in countries where they were the minority. Even the US has had its days of discrimination. The early Zionists believed that if they could form a state with a Jewish majority that it would give them recognition as a nation and would ensure that there would always be somewhere Jews were welcome.

      Just now you’ve discovered that? Thousands left in 1933. (OPC) Thousands more in 1973. (PCA) You rejoined the Southern church(PCUS) in 1983 giving you a total of 4.2 million members. Now it’s down to 2 million. Churches try to get away and you hold their buildings for ransom. You eliminated the confessional standards (Westminster Confession)and replaced it with a book containing almost all the confessions of various denomination many of which conflict each other and made that the point of your allegiance. The PCUSA hasn’t part of the church in a century.

      For those of you not as astute as Luker, may I suggest you go to the Congressional Record of Jan 10, 1963. Ponder those objectives, read Obama’s quotes, listen to his speeches, look at those around him (Eric Holder and V Jones), and tell me Luker is not on to this.
      These divisive tactics are used against the US on a daily basis. Leon Panetta looking into the Marine flag picture is a prime example. Wake up, please!

      If this is correct – I will walk right into that Church and warn everyone to leave this church – This Church would not even welcome Jesus – anyone supporting this church and does not leave will answer to God. I cant stop the Muslims, but I can certainly do something to stop a Presbyterian Church pastor that has no authority to go against Gods word.

      No thanks. I have looked into a lot of what Christians have to say Judaism and how they try to make their faith more appealing to uneducated Jews in converting to the Christian faith. Read some articles by Jews for Judaism and Outreach Judaism. You’ll see how different Judaism and Christianity are on different topics.

      I am speaking to Christians in that I am saying that as Chritians, we are missing out in that we don’t understand our Jewish roots and that without the understanding of Judaism we cannot fully understand Christianity. Salvation is through the Jews (can’t at this moment quote the chapter and verse) Jesus did not come to establish a new “religion” but to fulfill the law of the Old Testament – to become the supreme sacrificial Lamb the atonement for sins. Perhaps (I am assuming you are Jewish from your comment) a study of the Torah and ancient Jewish wisdom could be beneficial to bringing you back into a right relationship with Jehovah

      I love talking scripture with an Orthodox Jew, they really know the Old Test like the back of their hand. It’s healthy and we both know that we have our own set of absolutes…we simply disagree on the Messiah…I believe that He came and he is still, obediently, awaiting the arrival of the Messiah…either way we agree on a lot more than that critical departure.
