Jewish Paper’s Editor Responds to Blaze Article on Obama Being Named to Influential Jews List

Jane Eisner Responds to Blaze Coverage of Obama on Jewish Forwards Forward 50

On Friday, I covered the Jewish Daily Forward’s “Forward 50,” a list of the most influential Jews in America this past year. There are many impressive names on the list — individuals who span a variety of sectors. As we noted, the roster, which the Forward describes as, “an impressionist picture of the American Jewish story,” also includes President Barack Obama.

Now, in my initial coverage I called Obama’s selection “a bizarre addition” to the list. After all, he isn‘t Jewish and there are many who wouldn’t necessarily see him as overtly pro-Israel. On Friday afternoon, Forward editor Jane Eisner responded to the Blaze’s coverage in a piece entitled, “Why We Added Obama.” She wrote:

The old adage that all publicity is good publicity relates to journalism, as well. So I was pleased to see that The Blaze, Glenn Beck’s website, thought enough of our annual Forward 50 project to write about it.

Of course, what interested The Blaze wasn’t the list of 50 American Jews who have shaped the Jewish story in politics, science, culture, the media, religion, advocacy and even sports. No, it was the 51st name on the list — in our parlance, the “Plus One” — that got the attention.

There are a number of elements that jump out of the text here. First and foremost, it was a pleasure to feature the list, seeing as many of the names are both influential and impressive individuals. So, yes, we surely thought enough of the project to feature it. And it should be noted that our original article was by no means negative journalism, rather it was a piece that placed focus upon the most controversial addition to the Forward’s roster.

It is Eisner’s other comment — that the Blaze wasn’t interested in the “list of 50 American Jews who have shaped the Jewish story in politics, science, culture, the media, religion, advocacy and even sports,” that is truly curious. It isn‘t that we weren’t interested; it‘s that Obama’s presence on the list stands out most prominently.

Aside from the clear controversy inherent in Obama’s inclusion on the list, this comment is even more odd, because, on Friday afternoon, the Blaze received a pitch from a PR person who seems to work with the Forward. The individual’s e-mail described the purpose of the “Forward 50,” then pitched the president’s presence on the list.

The pitch read, “And as in years past, the Forward has named a gentile for the honorary 51st position on the list.  This year, it is President Obama.” Following the text, a link to a profile that the Forward setup for Obama was included (the only link to an individual’s profile page present in the pitch).

Clearly, Obama’s presence was a hook that the Forward knew would be appealing to journalists, which is why this PR representative included it so prominently in his e-mail to us.

Also, it should be noted that it was not initially clear that Obama was a “Plus One,” as Eisner has indicated. In fact, when the Blaze first published the story, the president was included in a graphic depiction of the “Forward 50” and, without a notation that he was the 51st, it appeared as though he was the 50th and last (unless you counted each individual) on the list. Then, after the Blaze’s coverage, the image suddenly changed and the president was then separated out as a “Plus One.” Here’s the second image:

While this isn’t a big deal, it adds to the confusion. Initially, it seemed Obama was being clumped together with the other Jewish individuals on the list (and yes, as per the second image, you’ll see that Anthony Weiner did make his way onto the list). Then, following our coverage, the Forward changed the graphics to more easily depict Obama as the “Plus One.” Perhaps the newspaper had been planning to do this beforehand. It’s not a “make or break” factor in the story, but it’s worth noting.

And in the Forward’s defense, non-Jews have been selected before (which we noted in our original coverage). Eisner writes:

My first year as editor, in 2008, we chose Father Paul Ouderkirk, the Catholic priest in Postville, Iowa, who so nobly helped the workers in the Agriprocessors’ kosher meat packing plant that had been the subject of a Forward investigation and the largest immigration raid in American history. Last year, in a “Plus Two”, we highlighted Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky, whose marriage sparked an intense conversation about intermarriage in the American Jewish community.

In the comments section of Eisner’s piece, readers debated Obama’s inclusion, with people weighing in on both sides of the debate. Of course, Glenn Beck’s name was brought up a few times. One commenter, “Brad Lee,” wrote, “Anything that Glenn Beck finds bizarre I usually find brilliant.” But another, named “billredd” wrote:

Why was Glenn Beck not added to the list? He has done more good for the Jewish community than any other non-Jew I can think of. I have learned so much about the Jewish faith and the struggle of Israel from Glenn than anywhere else and it was all positive and compelling.

I can’t agree with the choice of Pres. Obama, while he has not been a major detractor of the Jewish community, I feel he has not really been a staunch advocate either, certainly not like Glenn Beck has. (Obama‘s comment on going back to the ’67 borders, his treatment of Benjamin Netanyahu, and his outspoken support for the Arab Spring which is now becoming a major problem for Jews and Christians in the area)

Regardless of his politics, Glenn Beck has given me a very positive view of Jews and Israel that frankly I did not have before. And I think I speak for thousands of Glenn’s non-Jewish listeners. I think the addition of Pres.Obama was purely political and cheap on your part, the facts are not there to substantiate it.

This, of course, is a question best posed to the editor, herself.

Eisner concluded her piece with, “The Blaze called the selection ‘bizarre.’ I call it brilliant. Let us know what you think.” We’ll throw the same question out to our readers. Take our poll below and let us know what you think of Obama’s inclusion:

      So was this a report about the list, creating a controversy around the list that isn’t really there, or a pitch for including GB. Which of course is absurd. GB broadcasted his show from Israel, I‘m sure claiming all expenses for the trip and held a couple of rally’s for a made up movement. Neither is relevant or noteworthy.

      These publishers remind me of those Jews who betrayed their faith and work with the Nazis. Or the media elite who befriended Spain’s Red Revolution before that only to be executed in mass and left in the street as a lesson to those who would speak out against the revolution. Lets not forget the American and world media that demanded Fidel Castro be freed after his attempt of a forceful revolution. When he and his band if useless idiots ( University Students ) tried to take the government by force.

      Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

      Even after Castro return from exile, his failed attempt to invade the Island nation with a band of less than 50 men including Che Guevara. Still the the Island and world media remained silent. All the while they Occupied the hills “ Cierra Mastera ” where he waged a gorilla war. Stealing and extorting funds, food and favor from those that crossed his path. Building consensus at the point of a gun. In the three years they spent in the mountains he even had his own men executed for stepping out of line… Peaceful Castro?!

      JRook, Name one (yes, only one necessary) positive thing that the Annointed One did or even intends to do that is in anyway pro Israel. He insults their leader, demands that they move back to pre 1967 borders and sides with Iran (arguably Israel’s biggest foe). By the way, the beloved Palestinians, aren’t even from that area. The vast majority are actually refugees from Syria, an Arab state. True to form, the muslems don’t want to take care of their own.

      @BAIKONUR – We are all aware that the Kibbutzim are modeled after socialist communes, but they were necessary so that immigrants could be taught how to “make the land fertile” and make Israel self sufficient.

      They also served as militia outposts for the Hagganot to defend against Arab attacks againt the Jews in palestine and later Israel. The original constitution of Israel called for a parlimentary form of representative democracy. A republic was not possible because the region of palestine had no monarchy to be returned to the public.

      So don’t try to make a case for communists founding Israel. It just doesn’t face the test of reality in Israel.

      I agree with the immediate above statements wholeheartedly. Karl Marx, a Jew, produced a generation of world-wide Communists and many Russian Jews dragged it over to the US with them while escaping from their (ironically) Communist predators-see pogroms. European Jews owned Europe’s banks (Rothschilds) and had great wealth before Hitler. They also had Einstein and could afford to defend themselves. When Hitler came into power, most Jews surrendered quietly and rode trains to their death after years of warnings and obvious growth of threatened violence. It’s almost as if they are resigned to submitting to Holocausts every 100 years. Obama has insulted or ignored Jews repeatedly while bowing down to Arabs and praising the “qu’ran” continuously and NY/Hollywood Jews bend over for him. Sad and confusing. Netanyahu is the David of his time and the fact that Obama/Sarkozy hate him proves it.

    Well.. I find it irritating that ethnic groups ALL do this thing where they list the accomplishments of ‘their peeps’. It is un-American when you consider the fact that we’re all supposed to be in a melting pot here. Does it matter to me that they added Obama to the list? Not really because I consider the list to be silly in the first place. Of course, I would look forward to a list of the 50 most despicable, conniving, selfish, ruthless, lying scheming members of any group.

    Here’s a hint.. your accomplishments aren’t augmented by your ethnicity.

      C’mon now, we’re all supposed to be celebrating diversity. Diversity in the work place, diversity at home, diversity in schools, diversity in public. It’s been mandated now by another Executive Order that all Federal HR personell should be hiring a more diverse work force.
      Forget it if the person can actually do the job, nope, if you have a white person, black or hispanic, I bet you they hire the hispanic, unless they have too many, then they’ll hire the black. Chances are white people are not going to get hired anytime soon in the Federal Govt.

      I agree entirely. Neither accomplishments nor wrongdoing have anything to do with ethnicity.

      Nevertheless, The US contains many nationalities and cultures with unique histories they like to preserve and pass to their children. This is their right and America would be poorer if it weren’t so.

      For example, there were many Greek-Americans in the community where I lived in the US. Their children went to the Greek Orthodox Church and spent a few hours each Sunday learning Greek dancing, language, cooking, etc. The children were perfectly normal American children, from perfectly normal American families, but also very aware of and proud of their ancient cultural traditions and of being Greek.

      I think that’s totally cool. Non-Greek Americans got to partake of beautiful Greek traditions and food all the time because these Greek people cared so deeply about their origins.

      This goes for all immigrants to the US, including the writers and editors of The Forward. Don’t think that because most Blazers are Anglo-Saxon Protestants that America is somehow an English protestant land at core. It is not. America’s conquest, history, and above all, its Constitution makes it clear that America is a land for all people.

      That passage is referring to Christians who become Jews by adoption through Jesus, when a person is born again they become brothers with Jesus spiritually! Read your Bible, I could copy and paste the passage but you can find it if your really want to know!

    I agree it was bizarre. I cannot think of one good thing Obama has done to help Israel lately. If anything he gives the impression he only likes them for their money and vote, and will throw them under any bus after that. Sorry. she speaks falsely, and we are not a stupid bunch, we can tell b.s. when we hear it. Glenn is their best friend and she is acting too stupid to know it. I certainly hope the rest of Israel is smarter than her.

    This is untue. I read the article and looked at the images, and it always said ‘Plus One’ for President Obama from the moment this article was posted on the Blaze.

    The Blaze is trying very hard to keep Glenn relevant by picking this nit with an actual news publication, but unfortunately, Glenn’s time has passed. Poor guy is hardly ever mentioned on media matters or even made fun of any more.

      Let’s back up a minute. I don’t hate Glenn. I think he is clever and charming, and I think he is a con man, yes. I certainly do not hate him. He is just trying to make a buck, like P. T. Barnum did. P. T. Barnum actually is an admirable human being who ran for office, was a big time philanthropist, and went completely bankrupt at middle age and rebuilt himself into a wealthy man from scratch after that.

      But to answer your question about why The Forward named Obama the ‘Plus One’? My theory is that they believe in a two-state solution and a peaceful course of action with the Palestinians as being the best for the Jews and see that Obama shares this approach.

      How is it possible to have a peaceful “two state solution” when the Palestinian Charter demands the eradication of Israel and the Jews? Israel has given up land for peace before and it hasn’t worked. How would next time be any different?

      Because the road is difficult and the climb is steep is not a reason to leave the path of righteousness and peace. The two-state solution does not presuppose insecurity for Israel. israel negotiates from a position of strength, as it should.

      Israel MUST achieve peace with its neighbours in order to survive. In order to achieve peace with its neighbours, it must resolve the Palestinian situation first. Israel has much to offer to all its neighbours, and they to her. Peace is the only way for a mutual exchange to occur.

Change history, never support actual facts that hold 100% weight, change things to meet your criteria. The list goes on and one. Like OWS, willing to blame and protest the the 1%, when not all 1% is wrong. However, they give a big pass to politicians who directly caused the issue. The protestors say they are for peace, but they do everything to disturb it and prevent police from restoring and protecting it.

      The two state solution presupposes you are dealing with other rational, peace loving peoples. That isn’t the case here. You neglected to address the intention of the Palestinians (and ALL extremist Muslims) to wipe Israel and the Jews from the face of the earth…………

      Obama is bleeding Jewish votes. The results of the special election in New York (a heavily orthodox jewish area) that put a Republican in place for the first time since 1923 sent chills up the Obama administration’s spine. So the liberal jewish mouthpieces are doing their utmost to fool the jewish population that Obama is beneficial to them. You’ll recall New York magazines depiction of Obama in a yarmulke right after that election? It’s a propaganda campaign.
