State Sen. Nina Turner Tells CNN Jim Crow Has Been Resurrected Says Republicans Are Suppressing Voters in Ohio

Appearing on CNN’s “Newsroom” on Tuesday, Ohio State Senator Nina Turner said that “Jim Crow has been resurrected” in her state, referring specifically to what she calls voter suppression happening in “Democratic areas and also areas that are predominantly African-American.”

“It’s tragic that in the 21st century, 2012, we have voter suppression going on,” Turner said. ”You know, Jim Crow has been resurrected, making repeat performances in the South and has packed his bags and moved north, in Ohio in particular.”

CNN host Deborah Feyerick asked why early voting is not being expanded in some Ohio counties and not others. Some county election boards have voted to extend early voting periods, while others have not. Turner believes there is a conspiracy to suppress the Democratic and African-American vote.

The Secretary of State John Husted announced over the weekend that he may issue a set of early voting guidelines for all counties to follow.

“It’s not by accident, Deb, that Democrats in Republican-leaning counties who serve on boards of elections get it. Democrats have been consistent in terms of us extending the franchise for the citizens of the state,” she added.

However, in more urban counties, she explained, “the Republicans on those boards have voted to suppress the vote.”

“You see very, very clearly that in Republican-leaning counties the vote has been extended and in Democratic-leaning counties, the vote has been suppressed,” Turner continued. “Even Ray Charles could see what’s going on here: flat-out voter suppression in Democratic areas and also areas that are predominantly African-American.”

“Nobody should have to beg to vote,” Tuner concluded. ”They might as well bring back literacy tests and the poll tax if they are going to keep this up in the state of Ohio.”

      I do live in Northern Ohio and all I can say is, at least we got rid of Kucinich. That’s 1 down and a whole lot more to go.

      This is how it would be in my county: Poll Tax? No. Literacy test? Why not? There would also be a civics test and basic economics. Whatever your score is equals the percentage your vote counts. 100% = 1 whole vote. 50% = 1/2 a vote.

      You made a typing error. Cheating is the only way Demcrats can win, and they do if often. Dead people vote. People vote twice. People are bribed and threatened to vote. All of this is rampant in heavily Democrat areas like Chicago and Detroit. I grew up in the Chicago area thinking dead people were supposed to vote and it was normal for union people to tell people how to vote. I saw and heard it happen, and it was ALWAYS Democrats. The same people who say they don’t have the time or ability to get someplace to vote have no trouble getting to a movie or the mall and getting an ID so they can buy alcohol, ride a plane, or go to a Democrat function. It is only when it involves voting that they are suddenly helpless. How racist it is to paint black people as helpless and incompetent!

      In my GREAT state of OHIO, a DECIDING STATE, we REQUIRE the voter to show a VALID STATE ID OR DRIVER‘S LICENSE and if they don’t have that, THEY MUST SHOW SOME FORM OF LEGAL ID!
      That is the way it should be!

      These other states that cry DISCRIMINATION when a voter must show an ID IS HIDING SOMETHING!

    I’m all for literacy tests. Not for just the voters, but for the politicians too. I would gues that 50% of the population would be inelidgible to vote or hold office. Not a bad thing in my oppinion.

      NY state has single day voting and to date there have been no complaints. Polling places are situated in relatively convenient areas with sufficient parking and close enough to bus routes. People living in rural areas seem to be able to get to the polls sometime during the day with no major difficulties. Absentee ballots are available for sick/shut-ins and military on station away from their home area. The only major problem in NY is that far too many people still vote for the names with the D after it.
