Jim Wallis Defends ‘Liberal’ Nuns Against Catholic Church: ‘From a Biblical Point of View’ the Vatican May Be Wrong

On the surface, an unlikely figure is coming to the defense of American nuns who are under fire from the Vatican for supposed liberalism and anti-Church doctrine — leftist evangelical preacher Jim Wallis. Considering the alleged leftist tilt many of the sisters have embraced, it becomes a bit clearer why Wallis has a vested interest in ensuring that the nuns continue their work, uninterrupted.

Last week, The Blaze told you about the full-scale overhaul that the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the largest group representing the majority of U.S. nuns, would be undergoing. The announcement that interventions would be sought by the Vatican and Catholic Bishops was made following allegations that the group has embraced sentiments that contradict church teaching — specifically when it comes to abortion, homosexuality and other related issues.
(Related: Vatican Orders Overhaul of U.S. Nun Group Over Liberal Stances on Sexuality & Abortion)
Now, the ultra-progressive Wallis, a fan of the Occupy movement and an individual who believes wholeheartedly in the redistribution of wealth, is coming to the nuns’ defense. In an article for the Huffington Post, he outlines the reasons he’s defends the LWWR and condemns the Vatican’s approach to dealing with the alleged liberal streak among the female faith leaders:
The Vatican’s approach to its concerns, to say the least, is quite regrettable. Condemnation and control were chosen over conversation and dialogue. Quite honestly, do most of us believe, or even most Catholics believe, that the bishops are the only “authentic teachers of faith and morals?”
The sisters may be the most positive face of the Catholic Church today, and they are keeping people in the Church who would have given up on the all-male hierarchy long ago. These women are often the ones at the core of Jesus’ ministry, building relationships with the poor and vulnerable and most concretely offering the love of God. If you had a referendum on whom the best faith and moral teachers are in many local communities and parishes around the country, it would likely be the women who are now under attack. That is the sad situation here and the serious mistake being made by the Vatican.
Aside from the bizarre notion that a leftist, non-Catholic preacher would be providing guidance for how the Vatican should be handling its own teachings, Wallis’ commentary provides a lens into his political attachment to the women. He goes on to call them “among the most faithful in peace marches and non-violent protest of our nation’s endless wars.”
Wallis also notes that the nuns have been at the core of the Sojourners’ social justice supporters and subscribers (Sojourners is Wallis’ liberal Christian group and media outlet). Here’s more from his comments on the matter:
The Church is very concerned about these sisters losing focus on abortion. But, most I know still feel abortion is a terrible moral tragedy and do whatever they can to reduce them. Their approach, however, is to support low-income women, which actually reduces abortion, instead of mostly legislative strategies that could just push abortions into back alleys. And perhaps the sisters would also rather minister to gay and lesbian people with the love of Christ instead of just telling them they are wrong and unacceptable.
When the Vatican said that issues like poverty are more important to the sisters than issues like sexuality, they are probably right. But from a biblical point of view, the sisters may be right and the Vatican wrong. The Bible is much clearer on the Christian imperative to serve the poor and stand for justice than it is on same-sex marriage or exactly when full human life begins. I, for one, miss the leadership of Catholic bishops like the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin who taught a “consistent ethic of life” and a “seamless garment” that defends life and dignity wherever it is threatened, from abortion on demand to poverty, the death penalty, and nuclear weapons.
Wallis concluded the piece by saying that he’s “got their back now” and that he, among others, will support the sisters through the Vatican’s continued assessment of their work. You can read Wallis’ full commentary here.

I was disappointed when O’rielly had Executive director James Salt of Catholics United on his show and did NOT explain that he represents a very radical group.
This is a marginal group and not what the majority of Catholics believe.
They distort the teachings of Christ to their own way of thinking. They promoted the protest of Paul Ryan speaking at Georgetown University.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 7:56pmMr. Wallis is assuming that all Catholics are like nuns, who take a vow of celibacy and a life of poverty. They live in a small room with no amenities other than indoor plumbing. Generally they live in a convent together and most are teachers.
Report Post »In all my years of life, I’ve rarely seen nuns grab headlines for political reasons. Politicians can turn it in to such, but the nuns were generally trying to secure food, shelter or education for children. And, when Catholics disagreed with said nuns, it wasn‘t called a ’war on nuns’.
Nuns live a life that most people could not adapt to easily. So, when Catholics see the nuns anywhere begin to defy the Church, then Catholics believe it is time for those nuns to hang up their habits and go to work for Mr. Wallis.
Sorry, but I don’t want to hear about nuns fighting for something they know nothing about…or so their vows say. I have no respect for a nun who wishes to become a diva or a rock star. Leave the Church and leave us to our prayers.
Mr. Wallis, the Catholic people are not sheep, which you seem to believe. They know right from wrong, and they know Marxists when they see them. That doesn‘t mean we stilll don’t pray for a man such as yourself, but we certainly don’t view you as a man of God.
As for the nuns, they have outlived their usefulness to the souls of the Catholics who once respected them. Go forth and have a good life. Always remember, being a nun is a life YOU chose.

Your first words about COVENANT was key! A Covenant is so much more than just a “contract.” A covenant is a type of oath, and God’s covenant first with the Jewish people through Abraham, and then to all who will accept the New Covenant through His Son as you say is a personal covenant, not a “collective one” or a “social gospel” covenant.
God’s covenant through His Son, The Word, is a Life-Giving Covenant which when embraced will become more and more clear through the guidance of the Holy Spirit (God’s Spirit) which will live in those who become members of God’s Covenant Family.
Families must have rules and discipline makes sure that there is unity of purpose within the Family of God. “We know from Hebrews 12:6 that the Lord disciplines his children: ‘For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.’ In 1 Corinthians 5:12-13, we see that he passes this responsibility on to the church family: ‘It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.” ‘ ” (Fairchild, ABOUT.COM).
As Jesus told us, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

I am SNOOOP1E, just knowing my name and acknowledging that I am posting on this Blog doesn’t mean that you “believe” in me……or does it? If you “follow” my postings is that the same as “following” me? What does it truly mean to “BELIEVE” in Jesus? If you believe that Jesus actually lived and died and rose again is that sufficient to inherit eternal life? What if I told you that anyone who say’s they “know” Jesus but doesn’t keep His commands is a liar and the truth is not in him would that upset you? Think about it, saying you “know” Jesus or that you “Believe” in Jesus is more than just acknowledging His existence, even the demons do that and they tremble.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 8:23pmActually, taken in context not eating shellfish from the “seas” around the Holy Land was a wise command! Those “seas” were really sllightly more than lakes, and the shellfish that might have lived there would have ben quite polluted!
As far as not wearing “mixed fibers,” again there were reasons for this. Wool garments wear one way, linen totally differently. Linen threads will cut through wool as it wears in a very short time! Again, an appropriate law in its time.
Men not “laying down” with men (and/or women with women) must have additional reasons beyond those we discovered with AIDS, the breakdown of family units, the nonreproductive result of this type of self-indulging behavior!
God seems to KNOW the laws of “nature,” maybe because he MADE THEM!!! Since Jesus came, “not to abolish The Law” (Ten Commandments) but to “fulfill it,“ and since He said that the Law and adherence to it was to be written on our ”hearts” not just in our minds, He, as God’s Word, must have known something about The Law too. In addition, Jesus summed up The Law into two which were all encompassing–”Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and spirit“ and ”love your neighbor as yourself.“ Through this ”shorthand” of law, Jesus removed the need for all the Pharisaical type laws that had been added to God’s Law.
Good try with the “linen/wool” quote one more time. . .

Homosexuality and bestiality are abominations to God, he gave the commandment in the beginning to be fruitful and multiply. You know it’s always a good thing to actually try to understand why God did the things he did, by studying and connecting dots he also will reveal those kind of things if you’re willing to understand the book is a Jewish book, not a Gentile one. Learn their customs, and find a good Messianic study group. You can learn these things and more on the web if you look up Hebrew Roots, El Shaddai Ministries. I think it is more important to follow his teachings, than to be friends with everyone. It is our job as followers of Him to speak the truth. If the seed lands on furtile soil, it will flourish.

Actually, the five year plan put forward to the Nun’s Association is a “conversation” between the Vatican and the wayward members of this organization!
There is much about Church discipline in the Bible including Matthew 18:15-17 which is a three-step plan to confront sinners in the Church.
Mary Fairchild writes in an article in ABOUT.COM, “Church discipline is meant specifically for believers involved in overt sin. Scripture gives particular emphasis to Christians engaged in. . . those creating discord or strife between members of the body of Christ, THOSE SPREADING FALSE TEACHINGS, and believers in OUTSPOKEN REBELLION TO THE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITIES APPOINTED BY GOD IN THE CHURCH.” (Emphasis mine.)
Rev. (?) Wallis might night like the Roman Catholic Churches form of discipline, but it is following Biblical authority and almost 2000 of historical authority.
Maybe, those who chose not to embrace the changes as worked through with the Church, can form (another!) new church with Mr. Wallis and stand for or worship however they deem OK with them!
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord God through the Church founded on his Word, Jesus Christ, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
May His Peace be upon all of Good Will.
