Jimmy Carter: No Choice But to ‘Reluctantly’ Support Palestinian State

ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he supports the Palestinians’ effort to secure statehood recognition at the United Nations this month, despite White House concerns for the region.
The Georgia Democrat said he wouldn‘t be in favor of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ bid to win U.N. recognition if President Barack Obama’s administration had “put forward any sort of comprehensive peace proposal.” But he told Palestinians have few other options but to seek statehood since no deal is in the works.
“As an alternative to a deadlock and a stalemate now, we reluctantly support the Palestinian move for recognition,” he said at a town hall event at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she was sending top aides to Israel and the Palestinian territories to try to sway the Palestinians to drop their U.N. effort and bring the parties back to long-stalled talks.
Although the path to full membership seems blocked because the U.S. promises to veto the bid in the Security Council, Palestinians hope for benefits that have eluded them for decades.
Carter said Tuesday it would be a “real step forward” even if a nonmember Palestinian state were recognized.
The Palestinian bid for recognition comes at a sensitive time. Once-strong ties between Israel and Turkey have frayed over Israel’s refusal to apologize for its deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last year that killed nine Turks. And, the Jewish state’s ties with Egypt have been tested by the weekend attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.
The U.S., which regards all three as crucial allies, has moved to try to ease tensions but both Turkey and Egypt are expected to support Palestinian moves at the U.N.
Carter said he doesn’t believe the peace accord between Israel and Egypt is in any danger, voicing optimism for the future.
“The Arab spring has brought hope for democracy and freedom to many of the people in the region … and I hope that eventually it will potentially bring about a change in the prospects of a peace agreement to be negotiated between Israel and its neighbors,” he said. “But it would require Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories and that’s something that so far the Israeli government has been unable to do.”

You would think that he would see light at the end of the tunel and keep his pie hole closed. In a short ammunt of time, Obama could out do Carter as the worst president in U.S. Hhistory (with LBJ just behind them).

Have some decency and crawl back under your rock. Geez you’re like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, desperate for relevancy. You must be terrified of losing your position as the WORST President EVER!
At least the last Progressive President, GWB, has the class and decency to keep his mouth shut.

Report Post »Jimmie Carter is probably one of the most honest presidents we’ve had. The problem was he couldn’t handle the demands of the office. You decry how we treat the Palestinians but seem to be oblivious as to how the rest of the Arab world has treated the Palestinians and Jews indigenous to their countries. You seem to disregard the dozens of rocket attacks perpetrated by Palestinians but are critical of Israel when they finally retaliate,

Posted on September 14, 2011 at 12:21pmAs long as Jimmy Carter lives he will be a constant and nagging reminder as to just how stupid the voters in the U.S. are. The Demoncraps never seem to learn. With Jimmy Carter to remind them, they still didn’t realize that Obama is as dumb as a rock and that he would make all of the stupid decisions that Carter did….. only worse. Obama has almost as much brains as a slug… maybe… and a lot more dangerous to the Republic.

Posted on September 14, 2011 at 2:47pmHaving had the misfortune to live thru the dark days of the Carter administration and being stuck in Detroit area at the same time, I never thought we could have a president of my country as bad as Carter–the man was a total idiot, but a very smart one who had no idea how to run the country except to run it into the ground! Those were the days when the car industry continued to produce cars but could not sell them. Hence the state fairgrounds and any place that open areas became the storage places for thousands of cars. Sadly, I am experiencing a worse Prez now who is totally inept and incapable of leading a country that was once great but thanks to Obama’s stupidity, we have been destroyed as the most loved and respected country in the world who has now turned paronoid to the point of having citizens report on other citizens! Sounds like the man is “very insecure” about himself and his policies, but America in not insecure—we are very secure in knowing we have someone who hasn’t a clue how to lead our country or what leadership truly is—all he seems capable of doing is blaming everyone else and demeaning the citizens he disagrees with–we will not stop, we will not sit but WE WILL STAND FOR THE TRUTH!

Posted on September 14, 2011 at 10:03amForget Jimmy – no one listens to him (I hope). Agree he has always hated Israel – and been pro-Palestinian. What we need to worry about is our anti-Israel regime who would love this too – no matter what they say in “public”. They know if we knew the truth about their feelings and plans, the American ppl would have fits. So…..they play their behind the scenes games. They’ll speak one thing to us in public (like their veto) but arrange devious plans/agreements in secret. We must be seen as still standing with Israel on the surface. But Israel is aware of all this. God will be watching and protecting, etc. as He has promised, but that doesn’t mean there are going to be some very bad, violent times ahead for all of us. Pray!

Posted on September 14, 2011 at 12:11pmThe Arabs received 78% of the Palestine Mandate leaving a small piece of what was originally intended for a Jewish homeland. Now the Palestinians want half of Jeruselum as their capitol. The bottom line is how do you negotiate with a group of people refuse to acknowledge your right to exist and swear to rid Palestine of every Jew. No, I’m sorry but Carter and the rest of the anti-Semites are living in a fantasy world. The land doesn’t belong to the Jews? If you believe that then you have to believe Sadam Hussein was justified in invading Kuwait, readjusting present Arab countries borders and elimination of other Arab countries which were created/resurrected after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Good Lord, do even a cursory reading of Middle East history since the fall of the Ottoman Empire and speak with knowledge.
