Jimmy Carter: Occupy Movement Has Been ‘Relatively Successful’ & the U.S. Is ‘Extra Stingy’

ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter said on Wednesday that Occupy organizers have created a “relatively successful” movement because they focused national discussion on wealth disparity despite lacking leadership and a unifying set of goals.
The Georgia Democrat said at an event in Atlanta that Occupy organizers have succeeded in forcing the media and Congress to realize the “chasm is getting greater than leaps and bounds” between the rich and the poor.
“It‘s been relatively successful even acknowledging there’s no leadership, there‘s no coherence and there’s no single list of issues they want to succeed,” the former president said of the movement started late last year in lower Manhattan to decry corporate influence in government and wealth inequality.

“That issue was basically ignored by the Congress and the news media a year ago,” he said. “I believe they’ve achieved putting that back on the agenda.”
The remarks came at a Duke University event that also featured his oldest grandson, Jason, who was elected to the Georgia Senate in May 2010.
The former president said his travels abroad since he lost the 1980 election helped him realize the U.S. is “extra stingy” about sharing its wealth with developing nations, particularly when compared to European democracies that put an emphasis on foreign aid. Helping the less fortunate, he said, should be viewed as a moral obligation and not an act of charity.
“It dawned on me they were just as intelligent, they were just as ambitious, and their family values were just as good as mine,” he said. “It’s not a matter of superiority or generosity or handing out gifts to others who are less than you. They just haven’t had a chance in life.”
Jason Carter, who displayed the effortless Zulu he learned while working in rural South Africa for the Peace Corps, said his experience overseas helped shape his world view. He suggested that those who talk about liberty purely as a financial issue have lost sight about what it means to respect human rights.
“We talk about freedom at the Georgia Legislature as a half a point in your income tax,” he said.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 9:25amGodfather, you said it so clearly. It is the MSM and fools like Carter that are desperately trying to make the OWS movement successful by downplaying or ignoring the filth, violence, crimes and cost. They are the ones driving the wealth disparity message.
As far as America being stingy – who is it the nations call on when disaster strikes? It is the US. Carter is not counting the cost of our military protecting and keeping most of the world safe. He is not counting the many humanitarian missions of the military which is basically ignored by the MSM. We give far more not just in aid paid by taxpayers but by charitable organizations with generous donations from Americans. He is not counting our free market which allows for the development of medicines and medical procedures, which the world benefits from as well. It is America that is at the forefront of innovation, of which the rest of the world benefits.
If only Carter loved his country as much as he loves the despots of this world he would not be making such foolish statements.

Listen, I‘m no fan of Carter but that doesn’t permit me to run from the truth. Here are facts that refute your statement. America loves despots.
1) America overthrew a democratically elected government in Iran.
2) America placed an oppressive tyrant in power over the Iranian people.
3) America kept that tyrant in place with force for 26 years.
4) Supported the tyrant in Egypt.
5) Support the tyrants in Saudi Arabia.
6) Supported Hussein in Iraq, until he was no longer needed.
7) Support the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
Why go on… haven’t even touched on Central or South America… facts speak for themselves?

I’ll put up a list of the of the U.S. sins in supporting ‘bad” governments versus China or USSR/Russia.
Russia supports Assad in Syria.
USSR supported Egypt until the Camp David Accords. To get the peace treaty we had to provide financial aid to Egypt. Egypt was ruled by Answar Sadat & his legitimate successor was Mubarak. When Answar Sadat was assassinated by the Muslim Brotherhood Mubarak was also wounded in the same attack. Would rather have us renege on the Camp David Accords & give Egypt the cold shoulder because Sadat or Mubarak ruled? The Muslim Brotherhood is so much better.
Iran came about because the British refused to renegotiate oil contract. They were legally right to refuse although they should have renegotiated. Iran nationalized their assets that they had built.
Nationalization of assets is such a great thing. Why even Mexico has a problem when Hugo Chavez nationalized the assets of a Mexican concrete company. A Concrete company? Really? Chavez must really have screwed up the Venezuelan economy.
The Iranians were jealous because the U.S. were paying more for Saudi oil than the British were paying the Iranians. The British should have renegotiated.
If Abdul Aziz was not the legitimate ruler in 1932 of Saudi Arabia then who was? You cannot make an argument that someone else could have been & could have been elected & make it a believable cogent argument.

Clink! Wait ! What? Why are you throwing me in jail? I hate Mubarak like you! Hey I am on your side.
so will you go to Jordan or Saudi Arabia & promote Democracy Like La Hood’s son? Because if you will I’ll buy the ticket. You will have to get a visa to the country & sign a contract.
It will be worth every penny.

Mossadegh was a populist. Is riling up the populace & nationalizing a company the only way to get a renegotiation?
“refusal of the AIOC to offer of a ‘50–50% profit sharing deal’ to Iran as Aramco had to Saudi Arabia”
“anger over Iran’s defeat and occupation by the Allied powers — nationalization of oil was an important and popular issue with “a broad cross-section of the Iranian people.”
Iran was occupied because they were going to side with the NAZIs. But that is a bad thing . We must let them side with the NAZIs

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:25amJerk, There is no ‘love’ of the despots. America used them for their own national interest. You can criticize that but it is not like Carter who glowingly praise tyrants like Castro and Chavez. Your first three items are the same. Britain and the US did participate in the coup but it was because of Iran nationalizing their oil industry. It was Carter that pulled support from the Shah which brought us Khomeini – a tyrant fell only to have rise a threat to the region and to the US.
On your actual 2nd point, Egypt, Mubarak’s leadership in Egypt helped keep stability in the Middle East. The so-called Arab Spring is putting the Muslim Brotherhood into power and destabilizing the region causing a massive growth in violence.
On your 3rd point, Saudi Arabia – the fact we depend on their oil leaves us little choice but to protect and support them. Perhaps if Obama would open up drilling and would have allowed the Keystone Pipeline to be built, we would not have to depend on foreign oil as much as we do.
With Saddam it was the enemy of our enemy type situation and with Jordan I really don’t get your point. Jordan is a free market country with a growing middle class. It is a constitutional monarchy with an appointed government and is considered one of the safest countries in the world – hardly the kingdom of a despot.
To equate national interest with Carter’s praise of despots is not an equal or fair comparison. Nice try, Jerk.

Kinda like in Nimrods day when the Lord confounded or changed their language so they could be dispersed and set free from bondage they did not know was headed their way.
Sometimes you gotta thank the Lord for these things. Although in reality its not confusion to be true to the definition because they all have a message but there is no COHESION of that message. So I thought I’d add that clarification because God is not the author of confusion…Satan is.
I’ll add that the last empire Daniel was allowed to see was one that also had no “COHESION” because it was formed from Miry Clay and Iron which do not mix….thats the EU in all of its multi-culture glory and we can see its falling apart.

If they have the opportunity to elect a different leader and they do not, then they get what they deserve.
I believe most Americans would rather stay home and let other countries fend for themselves, but our Judeo-Christian values compel us to help those in need, hence we step in and get rid of nasty leaders through military action, sanctions or the like.
During a disaster, we help all, regardless of race, color or creed,
There may be exception, we are not perfect, but overall that is what we do.

Fmr. President Carter is still serving those who put him into office and is only doing as he is told to keep pushing the communist agenda. For those young adults less informed than I he may represent the elder statesman role. He needs to go off into the wilderness or keep building homes for the poor, and stay out of current politics.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:38amCan he really believe he is a Christian and hold the view that Socialism is the vehicle to get the kind of world Jesus would agree with? Those two do not mix. Socialism then communism are forced on the people to control their wicked nature. Instead Freedom, Liberty under God have set man free and allow man to decide things for himself. Its that power of choice that God gave each of us and that man has worked to rob.
I cannot for the life of me understand how this former president has gotten so misguided. I was alive when he was president and remember the turmoil this country went through. The shock waves of his misguided policies went well into Reagans second term. Most people who were working back then were thankful to have jobs even though most at that time were being shipped overseas, our steel industry shut down, car manufacturing being surpassed by the Japanese etc. At the conclusion of my first enlistment in 1985, there still were no jobs and even college kids were struggling to find work. I decided a career in the Navy was the way to go. I saw many of my shipmates take the gamble against firm advice and exit the service only to return within a year or two as NAVETS under that program which allowed you to return at one rank less. No sir! Carter is bad news for all concerned.

The U.S. the Europeans wanted to but they couldn’t. The Europeans didn’t do it for humanitarian reasons. They did it for oil. France & Italy get significant amounts of oil from Libya. So they badgered Obama to help them do what they could not.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 7:31amPresident Carter: Your presidency was a dismal failure. Your economic policies were a disaster. Your waffling, insipid, inept “leadership” during the Iran Hostage Crisis was an international embarrassment. How about just going back and working on Habitat for Humanity and shutting up, because what tiny bit of positive legacy you have is rapidly eroding away. Take a lesson from the Presidents Bush and bring a little dignity and silence to retirement. President Obama can use all the help he can get, but you are not helping.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 10:44amEurope has so much money to spend on foreign aid because they spend only 2% on the military instead of 4% mandated by treaty (NATO).
The U.S. does it’s fair share in NATO & then some.
The RAT FINK basterds in Europe could not stop the genocide in Bosnia. They could not stop Gaddaffi. It was U.S. military muscle that did it.
Now if the European met their military obligations & gave as much as they do to in foreign aid, they would have a nobler & a solid case.
Until then, they are LIARS!
