Jimmy Carter on Homosexuality: ‘Jesus Never Said a Word About It’

Jimmy Carter Talks Biblical Gay Marriage, Slavery, Womens Rights & More

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter (AP)

Former President Jimmy Carter is a controversial figure here in America. But beyond being known in more conservative circles for his intriguing (sometimes troubling, depending with whom one is speaking) positions, he’s also distinguished himself with his outspoken Christianity.

His new book, “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter,” delves into some of the former president’s own lessons that he taught over the years during Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plans, Georgia. These lessons are meshed together with text from the New International Version of the Bible.

In an interview published today with The Huffington Post to promote the book, the nation’s 39th president tackled some tough Biblical questions on slavery, homosexuality, women’s role in the Christian church and more. Carter, who has come under fire for his stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and his positive comments about Occupy Wall Street movement, among other issues and statements, offered up some intriguing spiritual insight.

Jimmy Carter Talks Biblical Gay Marriage, Slavery, Womens Rights & More

HuffPo’s Senior Religion Editor Paul Brandeis Raushenbush started the conversation by asking Carter if God wrote the Bible.

“God inspired the Bible but didn’t write every word in the Bible,” Carter responded. “We know, for instance that stars can’t fall on the earth, stars are much larger than the earth. That was a limitation of knowledge of the universe or physics, or astronomy at that time, but that doesn’t bother me at all.”

When it came to addressing homosexuality, a contentious issue in many Christian circles, Carter talked about its historical nature and delved into his views on how civil ceremonies should be treated:

“Homosexuality was well known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. In all of his teachings about multiple things -– he never said that gay people should be condemned. I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies.

I draw the line, maybe arbitrarily, in requiring by law that churches must marry people. I’m a Baptist, and I believe that each congregation is autonomous and can govern its own affairs. So if a local Baptist church wants to accept gay members on an equal basis, which my church does by the way, then that is fine. If a church decides not to, then government laws shouldn’t require them to.”

Jimmy Carter Talks Biblical Gay Marriage, Slavery, Womens Rights & More

Following this question, Raushenbush asked, “What about passages saying slaves obey your masters? (Colossians 3:22) Do you think there is ever a time to say, ok, we know that we don’t agree with that passage, let’s get rid of it?” This question was particularly timely, considering the controversy over atheist billboards in Pennsylvania that utilized this verse to rail against Christianity.

“Well, the principles of that are still applicable. It wasn’t a matter that the Bible endorses slavery, it was that throughout history, now and in the future there are going to be some who are in a subservient position like when I was commanding officer of a ship when I was in the submarine corps,” Carter explained. “It is meant to preserve the basic principles that don’t cause resentment or hatred or betrayal or false attitudes. But it also says that a master should respect your servant. So, it works both ways.”

@ZERO5692 et al I’ve seen a lot of people bringing up Matthew 19:4-6 But even after skimming 12 pages (currently the end) I’ve not seen even one person bring up what comes directly after those verses—which answers ZERO’s doubts that this subject is indeed covered by that context:

“Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

10 The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”

So there you go. Marry one woman for life, or be a eunuch. The ONLY acceptable sex is between man and wife….and that’s precisely why it was called a “hard teaching”

Maybe Jimmy needs to join The Jesus Seminar if he is not already a part of it. These supposed scholars with superior knowledge get together and vote on which parts of the Bible are really of God and which are not. I also can’t help but wonder about our current Presidents understanding. If he is the Christian he says he is, why is it that I only hear him refer to The Holy Bible as The Bible, but he refers to the Qu‘ran as The Holy Qu’ran? If he is Christian and not Muslim, then why is the Qur’an holy, but the Bible is not?

@Auralae – You keep using that word “eunuch”. I don’t think that word means what you think it means. A eunuch is a castrated male. Not a gay person. They’re not equivalent. There are some males born without testes, due to genetic abnormalities or damage from poisons, environmental factors, or parental disease. Some eunuchs were made so by others to make them “safe” among women. Think “harem guard” in that. And some made themselves into eunuchs for the sake of some really out there religious sects, believing that chopping their nuggs off would reduce their “worldly passions”. But none of this has thing one to do with homosexuality.

And @777Jenn The only outright exhortation regarding anything like homosexuality is in Leviticus, but there’s room to question that, as the original terms used were for “temple prostitutes”, so that exhortation would seem to mean “Don’t patronize temple prostitutes, this is an abomination”. But Leviticus is not Jesus. So what Carter said was accurate. Jesus didn’t say it.

And don’t forget — Jesus didn’t CHANGE the law…he FULFILLED the law. All of it.

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which is meet.”

I guess that copulation with animals is okay since Jesus never mentioned this either. And how about marriage to your sibling or 1st cousin or parents or uncle? Look like these are all okay to marry or to conjoin to as long as they are not temple prostitutes.. right? Or since Jesus FULFILLED all the law, i guess these (or any sexual combinations I, or Leviticus, haven’t mentioned) are okay… right?

Carter is surprisingly well studied. I think he deliberately parses ideas conveniently… however, if a Baptist Church chooses to be part of the Southern Baptists, Independent Baptists, Missionary Baptists, or any number of other ‘flavors’, there are guidelines… if they are not part of a group they CHOOSE to affiliate with, there leadership will make the decisions for the congregation as long as the congregation allows them. Each Baptist Congregation is accountable only as long as they want to be affiliated. The Southern Baptist Convention and the missionaries they support tend to be more conservative than the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Independent Baptists (& missionaries supported) tend to be more consistently conservative than some in the SBC.

Carter has taught Sunday School from time to time for more than 50 years. He has keen insight on many scripture passages and I encourage anyone to visit the Church he attends in Plains (they post his teaching schedule). Measure his text to the scripture. We have found his editorials to be off our conservative perspectives, however, many of his lessons are insightful… To understand his swing to the left, you can see the basis of his views in stories from his youth ( Recommend “An Hour Before Daylight”, his book that describes his youth).

The bottom line: Old Testament describes how God views homosexuality. It also reveals what God thinks of all kinds of sexual immorality. God never changed. Jesus revealed

This is a ridiculous and illogical claim by Carter.

Since it is pretty obvious that the bible did not capture every word Christ spoke when he was here on earth, a statement like Jesus never said… is non-sense (how would Carter know).

Secondly Jesus IS the Word. Before there was a universe, an earth or the old testament there was Jesus. Therefore any prophet or old testament writing is the inspired word of God and therefore Jesus.

Thirdly, an argument to a non-statement is not a proof. There are plenty of evil things that are not condemned by quotes of Jesus in the NT.

That said, I support gay peoples rights to be left alone and not harassed, just like any other human.

But I do not support special rights or those rights reserved for married couples.

Jesus may not have quoted all the Commandments, either, but that doesn‘t mean we don’t follow them. Wow, what twit that old Commie is! And just in case there are Carterites out there, here is what even Jimmy Carter’s bible probably has in it: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. — Lev.20:13

Nathen – “…all that was cancelled out by Jesus’ death…”

Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” (NIV)

John 14:2-3 – “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am.” (NIV)

Heaven and Earth have not disappeared (and won’t, completely) and He has not come back because it is not all accomplished, yet. Thus, its still against the Law to have homosexual relations.

He has a point. Jesus really didn’t say anything on the subject of homosexuality. Piper2 pointed out the following verses: Methinks Jimmy hasn’t actually read his Bible in awhile:

      Matthew 19:4-6
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

      Mark 10:6-8
6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Those two verses are in fact the exact same moment being talked about and they are in reply to the exact same question brought about by some pharisees “Is it lawful to divorce your wife”. They have nothing to do with homosexuality itself.

Also, many of you have referenced Soddom and Gommorah. Find ONE verse in the Bible that say’s that was about Homosexuality. Ezekiel 19:49 points to the truth saying “‘Now THIS was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” Nothing about homosexuals.

Homosexuality is in Leviticus, so is women not talking in church. Deuteronomy,

The Old Testament also talks about stoning offenders, and Jesus said, “Let they who has not sinned cast the first stone.”

We are not to judge someone’s shortcomings when we have shortcomings ourselves. I think he was saying, Worry more about yourself and not what others do. What crimes has someone who is gay committed against the stone thrower?

Also, the Old Testament only speaks against male homosexuality and not female homosexuality in terms of capital offense (IE death warranted).

We instinctively reject any form of deviency that is of a perverted nature, and it is a fact that homosexuals are NOT born that way, but are in the same vein as drug addicts and alcoholics who refuse to try to change or seek help to attain normalcy.

What did the apostle Paul [by Christ’s authority] say about the practice of homosexuality? (Rom. 1:26-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-10.)

Yes, Jesus did condemn homosexuality in His Word. The good news is, “there is hope for the homosexual; he has reason to believe there is hope for a brighter future. Paul states that some at Corinth had engaged in homosexual acts, but they had been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus (1 Cor. 6:9-11.) The same can happen today. As anyone who repents of a sin, the homosexual can be forgiven. He can experience the same freedom and joy that any other sinner knows when he becomes a Christian. The Bible condemns homosexual sex but clearly states that non-practicing homosexuals can be saved” [Doug Sensing, “Christian Response To Homosexuality,” Gospel Advocate, April '93, Vol. CXXXV, No. 4, 12.]

@ZERO5692, Scripture against homosexuality/lesbians—ROMANS 1:26 God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received the due penalty for their perversion. For fuller clarity read all of Romans 1:18-32.

GOP is on the losing end of this battle. More americans support gay marriage year after year, And last year, the majority of americans supported it, gay marriage is coming, whether you like it or not. My position is “i don’t care what two guys do, or what two women do”. They pay taxes, they can be afforded the same rights. In 10 years, 90% of the country will support it. This is just how things work… and like i said, who really cares. If you are really concerned with what gay people are doing, you are probably gay. Most people i know are too busy trying to feed their family, to care about this nonsense.

This type of issue is a red herring, its a distraction. What they should be doing right now is figuring out how to get jobs, and how to cut spending, and solve our disgusting debt problem… but they would rather talk about “gay marriage” and waste some more time on fluff.

Re the Slavery issue used by some to say God/Jesus condoned it.. IF they understood Scripture they would know that there was indentured servitude, where some obligated themselves to their masters, overseers, in order to get paid, eat, sleep, have housing etc. Poor people did this quite frequently, or for other reasons, as Jacob did in order to marry Rachel 2 X 7 years actually. See Genesis Chapter 29 for details. God NEVER has condoned FORCED slavery, He condemned it! When the Lord speaks about Free Men or Slave, THIS is what he was referring too,not FORCED slavery. Many of Israel’s prophets advocated for the widow and the poor, how they were mistreated, and thus used Sodom‘s destruction to speak to Israel’s sin.

There are numerous references to its “abomination”, however. In the New Testament we find Jude verse 7 speaking to it — “In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.” Jude v.7

Clearly, there was more to Sodom’s sin than Ezekiel cites. Homosexuality is perversion, plane and simple. Jesus didn’t speak on it, but neither did he speak on incest, beastiality, pedophilia, necrophilia, sado-masochism…etc. Shall we assume then that his silence on these are thus approval of them? Get a clue!

      @ROBERT et al

The ONLY parts of the Christian bible that denounce homosexuality are those parts referenced in Leviticus – the Old Testament. Also contained therein are the other 612 commandments regarding how to live your life that God proclaimed to the people of Israel.

If you so believe Jesus came and nullified us of those sins through his selfless sacrifice (thereby no longer requiring we eat only of animals that chew their cud with a cleft hoof, avoid wearing mixed linens, and sanctify the Sabbath) then you must ALSO accept the fact that he accepted the homosexual also. For, as He said regarding the adulterer…

“When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” ”
      John 8:7

Yet who does Jesus REALLY think is deserving of eternal damnation? The wealthy among us
“I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
      Matthew 19:23-24

Unix, judging from your comments, i have more intelligence in the tip of my pinky, then you will ever have. I’m not sure what Christ you believe in. Mine is the one that says “judge not, lest ye be judged”, and “love the sinner, hate the sin”. I’m a grown, self made, catholic man, with a wife and children. I wouldn’t go around condemning people, telling people that they are going to burn in hell, or speaking in the name of god if i were you. Trust me, God doesn’t need a phoney, hateful, cowardly, halfwit speaking in his name. You sound like one of those Westboro Baptist dirtballs that protests military funerals. Get lost chump.

The point of my post was, we have bigger fish to fry than gay marriage, or birth control pills. This is all a stunt to distract us from the real problems we face. Politicians would rather have you waste your time on this, rather than demand that they do something to earn their paychecks. The media (blaze included) isn’t helping the cause.

No joboww, i stand behind my comments. Listen, if you want to get your panties in a bundle, and waste time over this, that is your right. You are fighting a losing battle. The logic against you, is that gay people are citizens, and citizens of this country, are afforded certain rights. That’s why this will be the law of the land ten years, but go ahead, spin your wheels, cry outrage, kill more time, and hate more people, it will be great for your soul i’m sure.

I don’t have time in my life to focus on hating these people, I have kids to raise, my focus is on providing for them. As far as gays, i’m not for them, or against them. I do not really care about this issue. I realize you do. It says a lot about you.

Also, comparing gay marriage, to abortion joboww? One of them is killing a child. One of them isn’t. Its a pretty big difference. To quote a not-so-wise man, “thought really needs to occur before the typing”. Punk.

      @VOTEBUSHIN12…

Regarding New Testament references against homosexual acts…1 Cor. 6:9-11 and 1 Tim. 1:9-11 make it plain as day that the Levitical condemnation of homosexual acts were just as condemned under Christianity as sinful in the early church by the Apostle Paul. Since homosexual acts in these passages are associated with what is “sexually immoral”, consequently ALL references to sexual immorality in the NT can then also be applied to referring to homosexual acts, among other sexual sins.

It is important to note in the 1 Cor. 6 passages, that St. Paul’s rebuke it aimed, in part, at FORMER homosexuals who had turned from this sexual sin in becoming believers…and were being tempted to fall back into their former life. That there was PLENTY of homosexual acts (and FAR worse) going on in Corinth at the time is a historical given.

      @DESERTDINK

Those verses hold homosexuals to the same standard as liars and the greedy. AKA, every single person on earth.

Have you ever told a lie? Liar. Do you posses more money than you need to survive? Greedy. Do you engage in homosexual acts? Homosexual.

      Luckily for that last part…
“But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

It’s ok, because Jesus has forgiven you of all of those sins – yes, even the homosexual parts.

Face it. Jesus abhorred the sexually immoral just as much as he abhorred the idolaters, lustrous, and untrustworthy. That is to say, he died for them all the same and they are all washed of their sins the same.

If you believe any of it, you must believe of all of it. If you want to pick and choose that’s fine, but realize two things
      1) You are creating for yourself a cult of Christianity
      2) You are not a true follower of Christ.

Actually, I was thinking how much he looked like Barney Fife there…

      As to Jimmuh Carter’s take:

I’m with him 100% there, but I tend to believe Jesus said nothing about homosexuality because either 1: some things go without saying or 2: because everything that needed to be said actually *was* said when Jesus said that he didn’t come to abolish the law but to uphold it.

Jesus didn’t need to say anything about homosexuality because He already said everything he needed to say to Moses in Leviticus, almost 2000 years prior.

Verse 27 tells of men leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one for toward another. The other verses cover the sins of man up to verse 32. Verse 32 says ” Who knowing the judgement of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same , but have pleasure in them that do them.” Revelation Ch. 22 verse 19 says, “and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”

No, these two verses give biblical precident for Jesus’ santion of marriage, unfortunately not an express condenmation of homosexuality. The better argument is the one I made earlier on.

That said, does anyone here think that if Jesus actually *did* expressly condemn homosexuality, it would make a lick of difference in the attitudes or opinions of the Left? If anything, Jesus‘ express condemnation would send them even further into the Left and they’d have either said He was a bigot or would begin trying to reinterpret what He said to fit their worldview.

Carter is a typical liberal “Christian”, they don’t read their Bibles. Trying to lend support for homosexuality using the Bible would be like a NFL referee going into Madison Square Garden with his NFL rule book and refereeing the Knicks basketball game using those NFL rules. He gives peanut farmers a bad name. Jesus constantly reminded us that the only acceptable sexual encounter is to be between a man and woman in a marriage relationship, what part of that doesn’t Jimmy boy understand.

Once again Jimmy delivers “common knowledge” ignorance of the Bible – and others have been parroting this line for a while so it needs to be clearly refuted.

God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy spirit are united as the Bible explains – therefore, if a topic is addressed ANYWHERE in the Bible then Jesus in effect did say it. Just because he didn‘t feel the necessity to restate the obvious about this topic when he was here in person on earth does not mean that he didn’t already make his position clear. Nowhere does he suggest that this behavior is now somehow OK in the New Testament – therefore all Old Testament references are still in effect!

      @Drago

“So i guess you read the bible eveyday and go to church every sunday…yeah right.”

      I sure do.

“The word homosexual wasnt even around the, and would not be referanced in the bible”

Men sleeping with men was though. Homosexuality was pretty popular among the Romans at the time of Christ. It’s mentioned both in the Old Testament and other places in the New Testament. It’s just never mentioned by Jesus.

“As Jobeycool stated, the bible, and Christ said, the a union or marriage is between a man and a woman.”

I’m not sure what you were trying to write here, but I imagine it‘s Christ’s defining marriage as a union of a man and woman. That’s very true; but it doesn’t change the fact that, as far as the phrasing goes, Jesus never condemned (nor condoned, mind you) homosexuality. Hence what I said: Carter is quite right in his wording, while Jobey had to change Carter’s wording to make his point.

I also think you should stop breaking the profanity filter. And mistaking me for other posters, as you’re a liar :-)

@ DMG8487 – Very, Very good statement! Jesus came to fulfill the law, we are still under the law as far as doing right and wrong – but we are no longer condemned by the law. We are condemned by our denial of Jesus Christ – the Son of God! If we deny the sonship of Jesus as Gods son – then we will be condemned to eternal seperation from God in Hell! Hey Mr Carter… all scripture is GOD BREATHED…do you know what that means?
    2 Tim. 3:16 (NLT)
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.

The Bible is not a collection of stories, fables, myths, or merely human ideas about God. It is not a human book. Through the Holy Spirit, God revealed his person and plan to certain believers, who wrote down his message for his people (2 Peter 1:20-21). This process is known as inspiration. The writers wrote from their own personal, historical, and cultural contexts. Although they used their own minds, talents, language, and style, they wrote what God wanted them to write. Scripture is completely trustworthy because God was in control of its writing. Its words are entirely authoritative for our faith and lives. The Bible is “God-breathed.” Read it, and use its teachings to guide your conduct.
Oh and jimmy…Jesus never talked about “collective salvation and social justice”….

This doesn’t really make any sense. He states that the Bible was written by man. His words are pretty clear: “God inspired the Bible but didn’t write every word in the Bible.” You’re saying the same exact thing. You take it a step further insisting that is all God’s word – but aren’t men imperfect beings? And if men penned scripture on behalf of Him, surely they could have made some mistakes, no? Even if guided by the Holy Spirit?

Matthew 1:16 says it’s Jacob, but Luke 3:23 says it’s Heli. How did Judas die? Matthew 27:5 says “And he cast down the pieces of silver into the temple and departed, and went out and hanged himself.” Acts 1:18 says “And falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all of his bowels gushed out.” What was the color of the robe placed on Jesus during his trial? Scarlet (Matthew 27:28) or purple (John 19:2)?

[21] As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. [22] Finally, the beggar died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, [23] and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham.
[24] “The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in these flames.’
[25] “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. [26] And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. Anyone who wanted to cross over to you from here is stopped at its edge, and no one there can cross over to us.’

Obama is the worst president ever? So, Dubya inherits a surplus and leaves with a recession, starts two wars that he puts on the credit card, signs into law the PATRIOT Act, which is anything but patriotic, appoints clueless friends into positions they are totally unqualified for (remember, “Browny” over at FEMA? Or read Imperial Life in the Emerald City, and learn that one of the reasons Iraq is such a cesspool is because Dubya was more concerned with people’s political leanings than whether or not they knew how to put a country back together). Conservatives love to talk about high gas prices, but they seem to forget that the first time we ever saw $4 a gallon gas was under President Alfred E. Neuman–I mean, Bush. And what has Obama done? Made it so health insurance companies can’t deny you coverage because of a pre-exising condition, credit card companies have to be more honest about their fees, and he made it easier for kids to get college loans (wait, I forgot, college is for snobs). He killed bin Laden and al-Awlaki, and increased drone strikes (yet is somehow still soft on terrorism?). He, increased the Border Patrol and increased the rate of deportations (yet is still soft on illegal immigration?). Oh, and he actually won the popular vote when he got elected.

Interesting that he says the passages on slaves and slave owners has application to today. These came from Paul’s letters, of which several strong condemnations of sexual immorality come. It is not easy to misinterpret:

24 “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

You just can’t play the game of “I choose to believe this passage, but I want to throw that one out.” If his church welcomes gays in, that is commendable. If they are allowed to practice homosexuality openly without being confronted with the sin, the church has problems. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

Romans 1: 24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. 26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.
