Job-Seeking Beck Caller Encounters Flood of Support

During the final minutes of his morning radio program Tuesday, host Glenn Beck fielded a call from small business owner calling from San Diego, Calif., whose taken a big hits in life lately. The caller is just one of many struggling small business owners in America facing an uncertain future in an even more uncertain economy.

Gary, a fisherman and sport fishing entrepreneur (whose name was accidentally transcribed as “Jerry”), told Glenn his small business had taken serious hits in the past several months. “The walls are crashing in on me,” Gary said. “I’m holding on to the little bit that i have.” Like many Americans struggling to make ends meet these days, Gary said he doesn’t know where to turn for help.

“I‘m a man that’s never ever asked for anything, never put my hand out for anything in my life… At this point, I’ll wash dishes, clean toilets; I’ll do windows, sweep streets. I can’t find a job here in San Diego,” he said. “I don’t know where to turn… What do we do, Glenn?”

Glenn offered some personal advice for Gary to help him get through today’s tough times, including relying on his faith in God. He also encouraged the audience to be ready to help others in their time of need.

After Gary‘s email address went out over the airwaves to Glenn’s listeners, The Blaze circled back to see what kind of response Gary had gotten. He was happy to share his emotional experience with us.

“There are 90 emails that I will cherish for a lifetime,” Gary says. “The support has been overwhelming, the tears are still flowing.” Most of the responses Gary’s received have been from folks who could relate to his situation and have given him renewed resolve, he says. “It is not in my nature to quit and knowing there are so many great Americans struggling to make ends meet… In my heart I know somehow
this will all work out.”

And even though many Americans are feeling pressure on their pocketbooks, Gary says a number of people offered money, but he wouldn’t accept it. But joked that one offer — Christmas brownies baked by a listener in North Carolina — he might consider.

“This is not about me but about the millions of Americans who were not able to call and tell their story,” Gary says. “I will be glad to share my
story with America and what has been passed on to me in hope that those struggling like myself find the strength to carry on.”

Have to say I feel for the guy and have been tempted to call in myself but feared I’d sound too needy or whiny. I was laid off from a NASA contractor in Houston in December of 2008. (was notified right after the presidential election, coincidence?) To this day, I have yet to find work. Two years. My problem is I’m 41, under educated and over experienced having spent 18 years with that employer, starting from a warehouse inspector to working in mission control with nothing but a Associate’s Degree. Made “too much money” at one point to qualify for financial aid to go back to school but not enough to pay out of pocket. This past summer I lost both my house, and my cheating wife, and now have to pay child support for two boys I have joint custody of. I’m engaged to the true love of my life now and would be LOST without her and the Lord. If this all sounds made up, I assure you it’s not. I‘m now trying to be a freelance writer and have already landed a gig writing news stories for a local TV station about space issues and a former Apollo astronaut will be the ’talking head’ that reads them on air. I also write for my church’s magazine. My story, entitled “Count It All Joy”, can be found on page 4 of the following website link. (pdf format)

I will be in California for a few days during Christmas week, and emailed Glenn with my email address and offer of a short charter of this gentleman’s fishing boat. I want to take out the ashes of my dad, a hero Marine veteran of WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. I don’t have much money, and there will be no presents in my family, but what little money I have I want to use to help this man out. I’ve been in his position, and I know how much kindness, with a maintenance of honor of the recipient, means.

Whenever I feel a downturn, I look at performing other services. If you retail, consider servicing what you sell. If you have seasonal slowdowns(as I do) I look at who is still working at that time. Figure out what they are doing and duplicate that. Look in the mirror, I am never doing everything perfectly right.I constantly ask myself how can I be the provider people will NOT part with. God gave me a brain to think, a body to do, a family to support, and a moral compass to keep me on the right track. Start there, just by asking for help I can tell you will be alright.

Glenn is awesome and he’s right a lot of us have to look into our hearts and our souls and ask us the question what can we do to help myself and others. I believe the answer to that question is God and the Point Of Reckoning or a bottom point. The Point Of Reckoning is basically you hit rock bottom you need to realize that you need to make changes in your life or you will die. Glenn is the perfect example of this in 1994 not to be rude or mean or to be blunt but Glenn was a bum. He was at the lowest point of his life his 1st wife left him, his addictions to Alcohol didn’t help him at all it was slowly killing him but Glenn had his Point Of Reckoning where he realized that he needed to change his life or he would die. Glenn accomplished that step by getting back with God and regaining his Sacred Honor. Now look at him 15 yrs later his net worth is around 20 Million and has one of the most successful news shows out there currently.

I hope Gerrys story is Inspiration to other people where you aren’t alone and its not all over if you hit Rock Bottom. 10 yrs ago I hit Rock Bottom I attempted Suicide it wasn‘t pretty but I think by God’s own will I’m still alive. You can never lose your Sacred Honor the only way you lose it is by giving up but God will give it back to you when you realize the mistakes that you have made. I‘m still trying to get back my Sacred Honor one day I’ll get it back completely. Gerry my prayers are to you and to the other millions of people that are in Gerrys position remember never give up and God is always there and he will provide.

These rocket scientists that run the country came up with the brilliant deduction that new housing starts are off 77% from 2006. Gee, I didn’t know housing starts had anything to do with the economy. POOPHEADS. If the starts are down 77% then construction workers employment are down 77%, but they are just small business men that don’t contribute anything to the economy.

I enjoyed emailing Jerry this morning and let him know that he isn’t alone and that God will do great things in his life if he stays humble and relies on Him to get him through this. I know that Jerry will be blessed beyond measure from this as he already has. I went without work for 5 months and it wasn’t until I was humbled and turned to Heavenly Father for help did I understand and appreciate the blessings of work besides the pay. Only when we rid ourselves of the pride we have can we be ready for the Refiners Fire.

What Obama doesn’t get is that this country is good at heart and charitable by nature. We need no one to direct or force us to do the right thing. The great thing about Americans is that we will always, selflessly and generously, help those who are TRULY IN NEED.

WE ARE THE GREATEST NATION IN THE WORLD! Obama has no appreciation for that fact and has no understanding of American exceptionalism.

Boy, I know how Gary feels. My business has taken a hit in a big way. Lost like 80-85% of my business because of the hard times for everyone (Computer Repair Business). It is hard to keep your head held high and not wanting a hand-out but only a hand-up. I pray to God but sometimes I do not think he is listening until I get hit with a does of him kicking me in the butt to get a move-on. God works in different ways and he has helped me allot. For that, I try to help my customers out as much as possible, free advice, free repairs, ect.. I just hope everyone in listening range heeds these words from Gary and myself. Our company just lost a project bid because the prospect got some young kid to do a Flash-based email for a few hundred bucks instead of sending out the real Christmas cards with video messages that we proposed. The posts tonight show why I love America as the greatest land ever; the salvation of the country will be from God, through the actions of the people – both individually and together in groups helping those in need of a hand up. For a long time many of us have felt like a single voice calling and crying alone in the night; no more, the tides will turn fully, as long as we keep fighting one step at a time.

It is the people of America who are her Honor, her Integrity, and Her Dream Fulfilled.

It will only go away if we choose to let it.

Also as far as I am concerned, if the Blaze managers allow the links to be posted fine; several of the Blazers have visited my online gallery (for viewing only, i do not sell, love to have people look at them) and thank you for that. I know my cat-folk gallery is different to most, yet I love the freedom of expression all of us can share.

Handouts are going to be the toughest part of restoring a work ethic back into this country. Work ethic is what built everything, the sacrifice’s that were made to evolve all the process that have been given away over the past twenty years represents most of out history. Everything everyone has poured into this nation has been neutralized. We are pretty much in a rebuilding position as everything has to be developed all over again. This redevelopment will have to be in new fields and we are going to desperately need entrepreneurs to get it done and they are the ones most under attack, yes we have a lot of work to do and people like Gary will be the keys.

Its against my better judgment to do this but with the outpouring of support Gary got I’m wondering if my fellow Beck fans may help me out as well?

There are many out there like Gary and me, who paid our dues, earned a legit degree (from a school that doesn’t advertise on TV, yea I actually sat in 300 person lecture halls) possess 15+yrs in business-to-business outside sales, inside sales, account management and product development (tangible/intangible products; prototype to final product resulting to actual sales) and management experience that can’t get work. This economic downturn has been devastating to say the least (use your imagination) I’ve tried all angles to find work (friends or friends, Alumni Services, Career Dept from my former university etc even the company my father worked for) only to hit dead ends. These dead ends result in an employment gap which is now used against me.

If you are looking for an innovative, entrepreneurial out of the box thinker that can use my unique skill-set in business development, operations/ administration and/ or new product development in So CA (I know I know whats a conservative patriot doing in the land of fruits and nuts) drop me a line.

Dave – Buddy I am with you. I am blinking back tears not because of Jerry’s situation but that he has reminded me again of what Americans are made of!

      Good for him!

I couldn’t help him, but I emailed him with some cheerful words of support.

This guy is too much. He calls Beck on air to basically tell the world how great he is, and that he’s willing to do anything, and he’s such a good Catholic, and blah, blah, blah…

I‘m assuming by the vid clip and the article’s use of the euphemism “fisherman and sport fishing entrepreneur” that Gary is a sea fishing guide. Cry me a river! Gary has made his living PLAYING on a boat. Well, that‘s fine if you’re on the fishing channel, but in real life, not a large percentage of the population is going to spend their hard earned money on canned fishing trips.

Gary, maybe it’s time to either lower your price and your overhead (that‘s why I’m still in business) or sell the boat, rethink your future, and listen to Beck on—GASP!!!—KFMB. It’s free. Here’s something else, Gary: you can listen to Beck every weeknight at 5pm Pacific (and O’Reilly at 6) on FoxNewsRadio.com (sorry, no chalkboard). You dont need cable, and you probably already have BB internet. If you don’t, you should get the cheapest one you can find, because you can print enough grocery coupons every month to more than pay for it (my wife is a genius), but I digress.

Gary, I don‘t buy that you can’t find any work. I don’t buy that the economy is as bad as some people say it is. I‘m not saying it’s great, but, where I live, there’s guys all over town in brand new trucks, with $3000 worth of graphics painted on the side, MOWING PEOPLE’S LAWNS for a living, and they seemed to be going gangbusters all summer. Gary, it’s all about price. I guarantee you there’s somebody in your town that needs a hole dug or deck repaired. You just have to be willing to do the job well, and cheap. I just looked on the San Diego Craigslist. There were 20 job postings TODAY just for general labor. Another 16 for skilled tradesmen. There’s work out there. You’re 55 now, Gary. It’s time to grow up and get a big-boy job.

“Reach out and touch someone”. It is amazing the inspiration Glenn gives people on a daily basis. If you don’t have faith, in today’s economic climate, life can really get you down. Hopefully someone in San Diego was listening and Gary will soon be working and able to get back on his feet. Times are definitely tough for us, as small business owners, but the prayers going out and the faith we must have will see us through. God bless.

@Huckabee Gingrich 12- Your comments were despicable. The economy is different all over the country. I know because I have lived in 3 states since April of this year so I have had a chance to sample different ones. My husband lost his job of 11 years in Dec 08′. We had a house in Colorado that we practically had to give away. We lived off his 401K for 6 months until he could get another job, which unfortunately put him in a different state while our three kids and I stayed in CO. My husband and I both have degrees and although he has found employment, I have not been able to find anything except seasonal retail work. My husband’s job took us to Washington state where the economy has not been hit so bad, but the housing market never fell like the rest of the country. Simple houses (1500-2000 sq ft) were going for 400-500K. Rent on Apartments and houses were 1500 to well over 2000 a month and if you have kids or pets, the rent is even more. We lived in our RV for 6-months. Five people and three pets in a 24 ft travel trailer. Now we are in California for a year while my husband trains for his new position. Then we move onto Arizona where hopefully we will be there permanently. The West has been hit really hard by the economy. I was astounded at how many people were homeless in Washington. Every street corner!

My point is you can’t make a blanket statement about the economy and that you can get work if you want to. That is BS and if you really believe that then you are in denial of how bad this situation is. One out of every ten people in this country is out of work- and you really think that ALL of them could find work if they wanted to? Here in California it is a lot worse- unemployment is almost at 13%. How many homeowners out here do you think are looking to have their lawn mowed, bushes trimmed, etc.? During a recession people will do these things themselves, not pay someone else to do it. As for craigslist goes- really? 70% of the jobs you found are probably not even legit. Craigslist is not a viable tool for looking for employment- that is a fact. So, I do not know where you live, and perhaps the economy has not been hit as hard there as in other parts of the country. But, you should not be so hard on people and judge them as if you know them or their situation. This recession and poor economy is not a myth- stop acting like it is.

I don’t mean to be hard-hearted, but I hear so many stories about people who do make a life of handouts that I don’t know who really needs help. My mom worked 3 jobs often to keep scraps of food on the table and times we lived in a boxed off area at top of stairs, lived in one room and shared kitchen. Yeah, this was years ago, but we survived and no one gave us anything. Today everyone wants welfare, refuse to work until their unemployment runs out, etc. Some guy stand on same corner everyday all day long with a sign for help. I say, why doesn’t he offer to sweep off walks,
rake leaves, shovel snow, anything to help himself? Standing all day would break your back but if he were offered a job he‘d probably complain that he can’t because of his back. Help those who really, really need help. We have many soup kitchens and places to crash for the night, so???

GOD BLESS HIM and the best advice you gave Glenn was look to GOD first and foremost.I do and I work two jobs off and on I‘m not permanent but they always call when GOD knows it’s time and has provided for me and getting out of debt and able to put some emergency money aside but the most important thing I do first when I get paid is I Tithe and then after bills are paid I donate when I can to help others.I believe when GOD BLESSES me he expects me to BLESS OTHERS and I do it because I love to and it does my heart good even if it’s a dollor or five he can make it grow.I pray everyday for those who are struggling that GOD would touch thier lives.I have nothing to complain about he BLESSES me each and everyday not with money but with such peace of mind and love.I study his word everyday because everyday in his word is a great day because he is the LIVING GOD.I dwell with him and he dwells with me always. We have such a BLESSED NATION OF PEOPLE I’m proud to be an AMERICAN who lives in the GREATEST NATION ON GODS GREEN EARTH.
