Jobless Claims Rise for First Time in 3 Weeks

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — More people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the first increase in three weeks.
The government says applications for unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000 for the week ended April 9. That left applications at their highest point since mid-February.
Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000.
Still, the four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 395,750. However, applications have dropped about 6 percent over the past two months. At the same time, businesses have stepped up hiring.
“The picture we still get – even with this one-week pop – is that the labor market is getting better,” said economist Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors. “The unemployment claims trend over an extended period of time is positive.”
Companies added more than 200,000 jobs in March for the second straight month, the first time that has happened since 2006. The unemployment rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent and has dropped a full percentage point since November.
However, a more sobering reason for the drop is that the number of people who are either working or seeking a job is surprisingly low for this stage of the recovery. People without jobs who aren‘t looking for one aren’t counted as unemployed. Once they start looking again, they’re classified as unemployed, and the unemployment rate can go back up.
The number of people collecting benefits fell to 3.68 million during the week ending April 2, one week behind the applications data. That’s the lowest total since late September 2008.
But that doesn’t include millions of people receiving aid under the emergency unemployment benefits programs put in place during the recession.
Overall, 8.5 million people received unemployment benefits in the week ending March 26, the latest data available. That’s down slightly from the previous week.
Applications for unemployment benefits could rise further in the coming weeks due to disruptions from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Toyota said last week that it will probably be forced to temporarily shut down all of its North American factories. Nissan and Ford Motor Co. have said several North American plants would be closed for some of April.
Businesses in February posted the largest number of job openings in more than two years, evidence that hiring is picking up. Employers advertised 3.1 million available jobs that month, the most since September 2008, the government reported Wednesday.
Google Inc, electronics store hhgregg Inc. and Kohl’s Corp. are among the companies that have announced plans in recent weeks to increase hiring.

I‘ll believe that when I see the various governments CREATING NEW JOBS like Obama promised he’d do in his campaign speeches.
The thing that sucks is that unemployment for tens of thousands in NC have ended prematurely because the few counties with huge cities had lowering unemployment percentages which threw the rest of the counties in the state under the bus for Federal extensions.
So now those in NC counties where there are no large cities or where the large cities aren’t hiring are experiencing no jobs and now no unemployment benefits either. Ain’t it just grand!!!
You’d think some politician somewhere might have thought of that and would have made provisions for it. pfffttt

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 12:09pm@ DEANNE – Hey guy know the feeling. At least I was lucky enough to be able to get early retirement at 62 so I at least got some SS. Unemployed for over 2 years first time, then worked for the last year, now off again. From A2 in Michigan originally, got tired of the economy crashing all the time so came to Florida 28 years ago after Jimmy Carters first term. Had no idea Jimmy Carter was going to get a second term only a lot worse. Good luck with jobs, like someone said earlier, start your own somehow. I will if I run out of Unemployment again, need to keep income for Insurance coverage, don’t trust Medicare will be enough. Unfortunately I am getting the feeling we have passed the point of return, the doomsday clock has been triggered. Getting back our free economy may not be possible ever again without a civil war, too many opposing ideologies dividing us and won’t let us undo what has already been done. The free loaders have overcome the producers, pretty obvious. Sorry, just my opinion. Absolutely.

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 11:32ami am sure these reassuring numbers mean a lot to the people who are unemployed. we need to increase our manufacturing base. during WWII and the 50s and 60s, we made what we needed in this country. people made a fair wage and a large portion of the population lives\d a comfortable life. once we allowed manufacturing jobs to leave this country, once we stopped buyiing “made in america” we headed down a road that was destined to destroy our manufacturing base, and the incubator of a majority of american jobs.

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 10:37amDon’t believe any of the numbers! I think they are all low. Look around you. How many of your unemployed family, friends and neighbors are currently re-employed? And if re-employed are they full time or part time? That’s how unemployment should be measured. Like inflation, if the number comes from the government thru their mouthpiece called the AP, you can be sure it’s an out-and-out lie. Posted on April 14, 2011 at 10:19amThis is just a shell game – used by ALL sides. If you are only counting those that are “seeking” or getting unemployment benefits – then it should be stated that way. I’m not sure how you would count ALL of the employable unemployed. but the constant barrage of statistics mean nothing – except to a politician. Number one (1) how many people are employable? Number two (2) how many jobs are there, filled or unfilled? Number three (3) separate out full time from part time jobs and count them as separate statistics. It doesn’t speak to people that are working two or more jobs just to stay afloat. It doesn’t speak to kids between 16 and 18 that cannot work full time. It doesn’t speak to people with college degrees that are (now) doing lawn maintenance or flipping burgers.
It is so hard for government figures to just tell the truth.

What do you mean it‘s not likely he’ll be re-elected? Half the country still supports him even though he has ruined the economy and saddled the middle class with a yet-to-be-determined debt burden.
It is almost impossible to beat an incumbent president; particularly on that plays to people’s fears and the lower class of society. It’s always popular to look after the less affluent, but to call the ball and tell these people to get off their ass and become productive in any way possible is a death knell.
Throw in lightweight candidates like the Gingrich that Stole Christmas, Santorum, Romney and Huckaby, and it’s almost assured re-election.

So many people are coming looking for ‘now hiring’ adds in this area, some positions are being sent in or visited with applications on a 8:1 basis. We are helping almost double the amount of people in the first quarter of the year as compared to last year.
So then, how is the job market getting better and unemployment going down when so many people are still out of work?
