Joe Biden to Gabby Giffords: ‘We’re Both Members of the Cracked Head Club’

Vice President Joe Biden Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Cracked Skulls ClubWell, I suppose you always know where you stand with Vice President Joe Biden. Biden, who never seems to hold back from telling people exactly what he is thinking, made his latest colorful comments this Monday when he reportedly told Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords that they were both members of the “cracked head club.”

Giffords, of course, was shot in the head, sustaining grave injuries during a shooting rampage in Arizona back in January, while Biden has allegedly undergone two craniotomies of his own.

Biden reportedly got a “tip” from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Giffords would be present during the House vote Monday so the Vice President showed up to see Giffords, reportedly telling her, “now we’re both members of the ‘Cracked Head Club.’”

Biden went on to tell reporters, “you know, I had two craniotomies. For real. They literally took the top of my head off. Twice. Now, the wags in Delaware, when the second operation occurred, wrote and said, ‘Well, it’s because they couldn’t find a brain the first time!’”

Boston.com reports on the Vice President’s “beaming smile” as he shared time with the Congresswoman followed by enjoying a hug from none other than Rep. Michele Bachmann:

“She and I just commiserated about the steps to recovery,” he added. “Hers, much more consequential. But it scares the living devil out of you when you’re recovering from a serious operation or injury to your head. But it comes back. And knowing people who’ve been through it and came back was helpful, for me anyway. You know what I mean?”

He wouldn’t say whether there were plans for Giffords to go to the White House, but one thing he was certain of.

“She’s remarkable. She’s remarkable,” he said, getting almost nose-to-nose with a nearby reporter. “Will matters. Will matters. I tell you what, she’s the embodiment of a strong, strong woman. Think about what that woman has been through, and think about her determination.”

Giffords returned to the House floor Monday night for the first time since her shooting to cast a vote in support of the compromise debt bill. The Congresswoman’s appearance struck an emotional nerve with lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle.

Biden summed up his experience to reporters by touching on yet another emotional moment decades ago, when he witnessed then cancer-stricken former vice president Hubert Humphrey share a tearful, “three minute” long embrace with his “ideological enemy,” Barry Goldwater.

Biden certainly has a way with words.

      It’s sickening, the double standard that plays out here. Could you imagine if WE had said something like that?

      Obama had to find someoine to make him look good he chose Biden. It sort of the same reason average pretty girls hang around fatter girls who aren’t as pretty.       No big deal really. As a member of that same club, I can stipulate that you‘re never quite the same once you’ve had your central nervous system opened up. The fact that we lucky folks have made it their and back again, gives us a whole new appreciation for how fortunate we are to be born within the last 80 years, that normal folks have no appreciation for. 100 years previously, we’d be dead. Medical expertise has literally become miraculous.

      Think of it The human species has been knocking around the Earth for a bazillion years, in one form or another, and only in last 80 (one human lifetime) has it been possible to fix problems on the other side of that membrane that was inviolate before. Previously, if the CNS barrier was crossed, you died.

      Joe’s comment is acceptable to me, and until I hear a complaint from Gabby, I figure it‘s no one else’s business. As to his politics, that‘s a whole ’nother matter.

      Instead of being condescending or pitying her he was treating her like one of the boys so to speak. Had he said that after Ted Kennedys’ brain surgeries you would have understood [as he would have too],why not with Gifford?It was said to be welcoming,funny and to make a self conciously awkward situation for her and everyone else easier.It is not for him or anyone else there who hasn’t seen her in months or followed up on every aspect of her medical condition to treat her as if she is anyone other then one of the boys being welcomed back.As long as she‘s there on the floor of the congress to cast a vote like the others why shouldn’t she be treated like a calleague?I don’t get your critique of him for using humor here.When is humor ever bad for that matter?And think Biden looks like those founding fathers without the pompous wigs! He’s cool!

    I saw the article this morning on Gretawire, and I had to laugh because Biden has the good ole insert Foot into Mouth, no matter where he appears. I remember him at a Town Hall meeting and there was a veteran there who was in a wheel chair, and Biden said to him, Stand Up Chuck so we can see you. The guy couldn’t stand up, this had to be so embarrasing for Biden….One Gaff after another.
