Joe Scarborough Admits: ‘Glenn Beck Has Been Right’ About Gold

Today on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Matthew Bishop, the US Business Editor and New York Bureau Chief for The Economist, talked about his new ebook “In Gold We Trust? The Future of Money in an Age of Uncertainty.”

Co-written with Michael Green, Bishop’s ebook discusses some awfully familiar themes: the instability of fiat currencies, the skyrocketing price of gold, and the future of the global economy.
“If you got volatile markets, why do you run to gold?” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked Bishop.
“This is a very interesting time because…the people who have been the most successful investors over the past few years, a lot of them basically are very worried about the future of the dollar, very worried about the future of the euro, and they see gold as the best alternative currency,” Bishop answered.
“And they’ve been right a lot,” Bishop added. “They have a lot of their money in that currency and I think the rest of need to understand why. It’s always dismissed as this kind of crazy rightwing thing to do,” Bishop added.
“I was gonna’ say! So Glenn Beck has been right,” Scarborough interjected.
“Well, he has on this particular issue,” Bishop said.
“Remember like a year or two ago, Glenn Beck was talking about gold, gold? I mean, if you had invested like Glenn Beck told you to invest, you’d be doing pretty well right now,” Scarborough said to a thoroughly unamused Lawrence O’Donnell and Mika Brzezinski.
Watch the Morning Joe crew discuss gold and the uncertainty in the markets (via MSNBC):
Of course, the compliments couldn’t last long.
“Now the survival seeds, we’re not so sure– the coming apocalypse,” Scarborough added, “But on the gold front, that’s been a good thing.”
“Yeah, so we can debate gold, guns, and God — his three-way position — but I think on gold, he has been right and I think it’s because there is a real problem with our money system,” Bishop said.
“We’re in this period where the Fed and the European Central Bank are now printing money (for good reasons) to get us out of the economic slump in the short run. But in the long run, where does this go? The likeliest outcome, I think, because of the gridlock in Washington…is that they’re going to inflate their way out of the situation and that means all our money will be worth a lot less,” he added.
But what was the bottom-line? What was the final message Bishop brought to the table?
“If you think that Washington is going to take the tough decisions and sort out the country’s finances, then probably gold is not for you. But if you don’t think that, then I think there’s quite a good chance that we’ll have a crisis of the dollar,” Bishop said.

The reason Beck and others of us cringe when Ron Paul is discussed is simply because of his foreign policy answers. His economics and domestic views are quite logical, while his foreign policy seeks to undermine our defensive capabilities.
Before you say something allow me to explain: Having bases around the world aids in multiple ways, not the least of which is logistics should we have to go to war. It also provides materials should this country be attacked at home and our domestic ability is harmed. Under a Ron Paul presidency he would severely deplete and hinder both. Ron may be right about many things, foreign policy is not one.

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 9:43pm@OutofSympathy. Nice. You‘ve inadvertently illustrated one of Beck’s MANY, MANY awkward contradictions. You see, the BS in your comment was believable in 2008. But as America’s thirst for blood has retracted… SO MUST BECK’S SCRIPTED PERSONA FOLLOW. So… POOF… now Beck claims to be a noninterventionist and has even uttered the phrase “just bring ‘em home.” This is wonderful… but… uh-oh… one problem… THERE GOES HIS ONE EXCUSE NOT TO SUPPORT RON PAUL!!!!!!!!! Oooops. And to make matters WORSE, the jackhole broke the ONE SACRED RULE of fake-conservative persona-crafting: NEVER NAME A NAME! He did. Rick Santorum. In that moment… he lost ALL CREDIBILITY. He also DOUBLED-DOWN by calling him a George Washington gifted to us by Divine Intervention. Now he’s in a real pickle. He A) rejects a REAL conservative for no coherent reason and B) SUPPORTS a leftist, while LYING him into being a conservative.
BAD NEWS for his credibility among conservatives. But, no matter… his target demographic (naive, scared wives who’s hearts are so warmed by Christmas Sweaters) will probably never catch it.
Out of all the FAKE-conservatives (Hannity/Rush/Beck/Levin/Oreilly/etc), Beck can make my skin crawl, as he will often wrap his deception with the name of the Lord.

Posted on March 31, 2012 at 1:40amI don’t think Beck is a fraud, he’s just seriously misguided on foreign policy. He doesn‘t understand that overextending our military is making America’s defenses weaker, and that our wars exacerbate terrorism. Our invasions are the #1 recruiting tool for Islamists. Israel is more than capable of defending itself. We’re going bankrupt funding all of these unnecessary invasions. We go into places that have not attacked us nor had the capability to. Ron Paul is the only candidate who would change that, and it’s a shame that Beck has not come aboard and instead chose someone completely anti-conservative like Santorum to support.

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 6:03pmThere is a lot of truth in what is happening to this economy! While the government denies anything wrong with the economy, you see businesses going out of business, wide spread inflation happening as the gas prices rise beyond belief and in the not so distant future you will see people rising in the streets demanding higher pay because of the dollar becoming worthless while the cost of living going up! When healthcare passes we will have added even more trillions of dollars to our debt, making it practically impossible to ever pay off, while you see Hillary giving away Billions of dollars to other countries! What next may I ask? It will not make me surprised if you see people up in anger over what our government has done to our economy! Not only that it’s always “business as usual”, just even more of it! I’m sure this will lead to a state of emergency! It‘s getting so bad that even the average cop’s beginning wage is 65000.00 per year, not to mention the perks that come with it, like pension, healthcare and others! I only expect for them to sooner or later go crooked while our society continues to collapse! What do you expect? We will be having such a rough time that they will make it impossible to ever go bankrupt because so many would literally break the banks!
The wild ride is coming and it is not going to be fun! I suggest get out of debt, buy your staples that last for a long time, pack a gun and pray to God in being thankful!

Well, since that hurt’s the people who have the least amount of money the least, I would say that’s probably the best possible negative scenario–much better than massive unemployment (or both).
Inflation hurts creditors not debtors–for the vast majority of Americans, a little inflation (which we’ve been remarkably good at quashing hitherto) would be helpful, given the volume of debt most Americans must pay.

“Inflation hurts creditors not debtors–for the vast majority of Americans, a little inflation (which we’ve been remarkably good at quashing hitherto) would be helpful, given the volume of debt most Americans must pay.”
Inflation hurds debtors, too, because it’s harder to earn and save money.
As for quashing inflation, this is absolutely not the case. QE is inflation, and the effects of all of the inflation under the Fed is a constant raising of prices (which is why Ron Paul said he could get the price of gas down to a dime if he was able to keep the feds from intimidating people who use gold and silver as money).
Inflation is why gas prices are rising, by the way.

Don’t get me wrong – I have heard many, including Beck talk about “Economic Collapse” – HELLO – we are in an “economic collapse” right now – a “monetary collapse” means you can collect all the US dollars you want out of the trash can and pay down your mortgage (the mortgage contract is to be paid in US Legal Tender – US Dollars) or second – build a fire with your dollars to keep warm.
If you think you can buy bread with the US Dollar after a monetary collapse – you are dreaming.
How do we get to a monetary collapse – our National debt is high enough right now to collapse – if interest rates start to rise – it’s over. The Dollars is no more and Obama can declare Marshall Law!
Welcome to the Soros United Socialist States of America. If the Liberal Media is just now learning about Gold – maybe they will start warning of a Monetary Collapse a few months after it happens.
