John McCain on Senate Floor: Claims Torture Didn’t Lead to Bin Laden

In an op-ed for the Washington Post yesterday, Sen. John McCain called Osama bin Laden’s death “welcome,” yet he once again took a definitive stance against enhanced interrogation techniques. He wrote:
Much of this debate is a definitional one: whether any or all of these methods constitute torture. I believe some of them do, especially waterboarding, which is a mock execution and thus an exquisite form of torture. As such, they are prohibited by American laws and values, and I oppose them.
Despite his opposition to waterboarding and the like, McCain used the platform to reiterate his belief that no one should be “…prosecuted for having used [enhanced] techniques.” He made it clear that he believes the Obama administration should pledge not to charge anyone involved.
Earlier today, McCain appeared on the Senate floor to further discuss these issues (watch the video above). Again, he tackled the moral conundrum that he believes waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques pose, while delving into the accuracy of the information yielded through these mechanisms:
“I sincerely believe that torture…is…unworthy and injurious to our country. I believe the abuse of prisoners harms, not helps, our war efforts…In my experience, the abuse of prisoners sometimes produces good intelligence; it often produces bad intelligence…a person will say anything his captors hear…if he believes it will alleviate his suffering.”
McCain claims that these harsh methods did not lead the United States to bin Laden and that the information he’s received from CIA Director Leon Panetta directly contradicts claims that the U.S. benefited from enhanced techniques. However, last week, Panetta seemed to indicate that these methods did play at least some role in the information gathering that led to bin Laden.
Others, including potential presidential candidate Donald Trump and former vice-president Dick Cheney, have credited these controversial techniques for their role in capturing and killing bin Laden.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 1:59pmI think that, regardless of what he say’s, and I’m sure he speaks from some experience, today is different that previous times and these enhanced interrogations, even if they produced some results, have to be considered to be effective. Regardless, even if we think we have these higher standards, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the extremist Muslims will cut your head off in a heartbeat or will do whatever it takes to kill as many Americans as possible. So, we have to be strong, forcefull and get whatever information we can to protect our soldiers, citizens, and yes, our politicans. I don’t know, maybe I’m off base, but, I’d rather get some information rather than none and honestly if someone is willing to do nothing they should bare the responsibility of when things go wrong and be held to account.

Water Boarding only scares the individual, it does not actually hurt them, does it? The Bush administration judicial branch did not difine water boarding as torture. If a nuke has been planted and we need informtion or we are looking for a murderer of 3000 people, I do not want a President bringing the terrorist cookies and milk and asking nicely. I do not trust McCain’s judgement for the big stuff, sorry.

I can also understand why he’s against torture, but there’s a difference between torture (like he endured) and enhanced interrogation techniques. No one died or suffered irreparable harm from EIT and the intelligence that was produced is irrefutable. Posted on May 12, 2011 at 4:18pmI respct him immensely for his service and for what he suffered on behalf of America. But he makes three errors:
1. Waterboarding DOES work. There is the mistaken impression that a prisoner could just tell the interrogators anything. Lying is hard to keep up. The truth is always the easiest to tell because the story doesn’t change. Unlike the tortures of the Inquisition and other Judicial uses of it, the interrogators aren’t after confessions but information. They won‘t be satisfied with a quick answer if it doesn’t ring true or pan out.
2. Waterboarding isn’t harmful. Many US Seals undergo it in their training. It isn’t like putting and eye out or breaking on the wrack. McCain was permanently injured by what the Communist Vietnamese did to him. That kind of tortue has nothing to do with the enhanced interrogation methods used by the CIA, though that critical distinction is constantly blurred or ignored.
3. Terrorists aren’t legal combatants. there is no honor in their methods. Normal soldiers are just following orders or their nation, a nation that can be targeted. To honor captured terrorists as if they were good soldiers is to mistake the rules of the game. They operate by no rules, and therefore deserve none of the protections of the rules. To give them that protection anyways is to effectively reward them for being illegal combatants.

1. You are a sucker. You mentally sponge into the thought process and language of people that justify torture who call it “Enhanced Interrogation”. Anyone that has been actually tortured, a la Mccain, or people that have had water boarding done to them, Ventura, Hitchens, all call it torture. So, you get back to me when you have it done to you and tell me it’s not torture.
2. The point is, America should have high standards. If torture was a good thing, why don’t we have it in our system. There are alot of criminals here who have done much worse than these supposed terrorists. And that’s the whole point. If you are going to call people a terrorist, and detain them, some indefinitely, shouldn’t there be some proof. Is a little proof too much to ask? And Remember, this mentallity of Torture Is Good, will spread from supposed terrorists back to Here. Do you want “Enhanced Interrogation” in the American Justice System?

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:17pm“And Remember, this mentallity of Torture Is Good, will spread from supposed terrorists back to Here.”
How can one remember what has never happened? We have learned to treat war combatants differently from civilian criminals for decades. We detained German and Japaneese and Iraqi soldiers as prisoners of war without trial just because we found them on the battlefield. That never led to us detaining American civilians the same way.
Put down the bong, man.
And many of the interrogators have been waterboarded. It’s not the same as torture. It isn’t pleasant, but neither is prison.

From a 2005 article about McCain’s torture as a POW
http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/11/29/100012.shtml
——————
“I thought they were bluffing and refused to provide any information beyond my name, rank and serial number, and date of birth. They knocked me around a little to force my cooperation.”
The punishment finally worked, McCain said. “Eventually, I gave them my ship’s name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant.”

So McCain gave accurate info while being tortured.
