Joint Chiefs Chair Dempsey Says the U.S. and Israel View Iran Threat Differently: For Israel It‘s ’Existential’

Joint Chiefs Chairman Dempsey Says the U.S. and Israel Don’t View Iran Threat Eye to Eye For Israel its

Speaking to reporters in route to Afghanistan late Sunday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said that even though Israeli and American military leaders see the same intelligence reports, the two countries view the Iranian nuclear threat differently.

According to AFP, Dempsey said:

“We compare intelligence, we discuss regional implications. And we’ve admitted to each other that our clocks are turning at different rates,” he said.

“They are living with an existential concern that we are not living with.”

Amid intense speculation in the Israeli press that Israel soon may launch a unilateral strike against Iran’s nuclear sites, Dempsey said the US military felt no pressure from Israel to back possible bombing raids.

Though Dempsey says the U.S. doesn’t feel pressure to back an Israeli bombing campaign, he clearly feels enough pressure to speak every two weeks with his Israeli counterpart, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, about the Iranian nuclear threat.

AFP reports that Dempsey reiterated Sunday night his previously-stated position that an Israeli military strike will only delay Iran’s nuclear program, not totally destroy it. This also appears to be the opinion of Israeli officials, as reflected in Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren’s suggestion last week that Israel would be willing to attack Iran even if it knew that would only delay the program. Oren told Bloomberg:

“One, two, three, four years are a long time in the Middle East — look what’s happened in the last year. In our neighborhood, those are the rules of the game.”

Oren added that even if a strike would only postpone Iran’s nuclear march by two or three years, that wouldn’t be an “argument against” the military option: “in the past, we have operated on the assumption that we can only gain a delay.”

The best example of that operating assumption was Israel’s strike at the Iraqi Osirak reactor in 1981 when Israeli officials believed “we would gain a delay of between one and two years on that program.” Oren said. “To this day, Iraq does not have a nuclear weapon.”

The Times of Israel offers more behind the scenes thinking among Israel’s leaders:

Defense Minister Ehud Barak reportedly believes Iran is only a few months away from crossing the threshold beyond which a military strike on their program will be useless, while the US believes it has more time.

Both Barak and Netanyahu reportedly prefer for the US to lead in any such strike, but say they will go it alone if they have to.

During the induction ceremony for Israel’s new Home Front Defense Minister Avi Dichter on Sunday, Dichter called Iran an existential threat to Israel, as opposed to the somewhat less severe threats closer to home:

“Lebanon, Gaza and Syria pose a strategic threat, and Iran, for the first time, poses an existential threat.”

Striking a defiant chord, he noted that Israel has:

“proved to itself, to its enemies and the world that the era in which Israelis are murdered just because they are Jewish – is over!”

Despite the Obama administration’s reluctance to commit to any military action in support of Israel, Ambassador Oren told Israel Hayom over the weekend that he believes the American people, the administration and Congress will stand with Israel in the event of a military strike:

“If Israel ultimately decides to take action against Iran, we will receive extremely widespread support from the American people and Congress, and President [Barack] Obama will continue to recognize our right to defend ourselves on our own. It won’t create a rift with the United States.”

Oren quoted Defense Secretary Leon Panetta as saying the U.S. would stand by Israel if is attacked with missiles, but offered no additional details as to what standing by Israel would include.

Hey, you guys & gals want to hear something funny? When I was younger, I had no idea that Israel wasn’t the homeland of Jews until 1948. I actually thought the nazis were fighting their way to Jerusalem to kill all the Jews. lol

Israel probably shouldn’t count on us supporting them if they commit an act of war against Iran. If they want to work towards peace in the region, than that is a noble goal that we should support. Missile strikes don’t often lead to peaceful resolutions, only murder.

I read the stories of crucifixions in Egypt and Iran’s saying Israel would soon be destroyed just before bedtime, fell asleep praying and when I woke, God told me to read Psalm 21. I took that to mean those prays had been heard, I’m praying God has a Cyrus for this day. Pray with me that we’ll see it soon!

25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—
” if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, ”

[THEN] 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. 29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him.

Also, I retract what I said about you being “worthless” and I’m sorry I said it.

In response to my statement that the ROMANS tossed out the Jews, You said God threw them out, and then quoted a portion of Deut implying that the Jews don’t belong. You took Deut out of context. How could I possibly deny they were tossed out when I had just stated they were tossed by the Romans? Anybody home?

Well, it’s evident that what the Lord said would happen DID happen, via the Romans, scattered, something I DID not deny. You quoted a portion of Deut to imply the Jews don’t belong in that area, in favor of another poster; I read and quoted the content of Deut to correct you, and apologized for what I said about you (which had nothing to do with our discussion). Truth may be a painful cut, but it is a good pain. Cuts scab over – if you leave the scab alone, the wounds will heal.

God chose his people and all thru the scriptures he tells them so even down to the last days. This is what the conflict is over, the Muslims say that Israel stole their birthright and that they were not the chosen ones. 1996 is not even in question when it comes to preserving your country, by the way which is such a small country compared to what was given the Muslims at the end of the war. The Palestinians who insist on continuing hostilities against Israelis do so knowing they are putting their peaceful neighbors at risk and in many cases are not above hiding behind said neighbors to save their cowardly skins.

      Tzion

When you boil it down, the Jerk and other libs know in their heart of hearts that when Israel formed in 1948 to become a nation for the second time, that 10+ Bible prophecies were fulfilled.

This terrifies the liberal mind. They hate the Bible, despise God, and don’t want to believe a bit of any of it.

They have a very hard time explaining Israel, and how such a tiny nation in such a huge sea of enemy can survive, let alone thrive. To think that God has a hand in it terrifies them, as they do not want to even believe he exists.

This is the reason for their hatred of Israel and love for the Muslim , and why they want to just wish Israel away. It validates God, and deflates their humanism. Knowing they will one day stand before the God of Israel put real fear in the libs. They think if they can just make Israel go away, then they make God go away. Neither will happen.

Show me some proof to back up your allegation and I’ll show you how Palestinians go into Jewish Israeli houses and “evict” them from the world of the living by slitting their throats. The last time any Israeli evicted any population in its entirety was when the Israeli military evicted and forcibly removed Israelis living in Gaza.

The fact is that all Israeli “settlers” built the houses they live in or bought them from those who did. And this isn‘t what some study says this is what I’ve seen myself. I’ve stayed in what you would likely call a “settlement” with a very nice religious family in a rather religious community. Not one house there was stolen from anyone and each has easy access to a nearby bomb shelter.

Your backing the wrong side yet again Rosy. Look at the facts for once in your life. It is the PA that passed a law making it illegal for a Palestinian to sell land to a Jew. It is the PA that honors murderers and terrorists as heroes and role models. It is the PLO and Hamas who call for Israel’s annihilation. It is the PLO and Hamas that refuse to end hostilities and recognize Israel. It is the PLO and Hamas that to this day use the Pre-1948 British Mandate of Palestine’s image in their emblems, indicating clearly their desire to undo Israel’s creation.

Thoe ones that “lived” in what is now Israel SOLD their worthless land to the Israeli’s, who did nothing more than re-purchase land that was once theirs. They turned it into a jewel, and now the animals want it back.

Look what they did in Gaza when the Israeli’s foolishly gave it up – they took advanced agricultural centers and trashed them simply because they had once belonged to Israel. Then they stick their hands out for global welfare, and our gobblement foolishly fills it. The land of the “palestines” as the ROMANS named them after importing them to replace Jews they had thrown out, lies largely in Jordan (nearly 4 times the size of Israel). But they turned on Jordan, too, and suffered nearly 40,000 killed for biting the hand that fed them.

By the way, I’m still waiting to hear how you justify Abbas himself calling for an ethnically pure Palestinian state while Israel accepts non-Jewish immigrants. Or maybe you’ll start by explaining why Palestinians are punished by the PA if they are caught SELLING land to Jews. The only way to claim Israelis are living in a house illegally is to use a law that by definition is a tool of an apartheid Palestinian government.

I don’t buy all of his arguments 100%, but he’s corrected me on some things, taught me a few things, and has at least discussed things openly with me without calling me an anti-Semite, which is more than I can say for some of the whackier evangelicals on this site. I mean how are you guys so sure you’re on the right side? Tzion obviously has a personal interest, but has at least been there. If I had money, I’d just go over and find out for myself. Of course, I have a feeling if I went to ask the Palestinians for their side of the story, my head would get chopped off. I might get some BS from the Israelis, but at least I’d have my head for the trip home. Especially the_Jerk. We’re supposed to be all about individualism, but you seem to be lumping the palestinians into the good guys group and the Israelis into the bad guy group. Don‘t you think there’s probably good and bad people on both sides at least? Maybe, I‘m just not getting what you’re saying all the time.

You do realize that the Israeli paper you always cite has a very obvious leftist slant, right? Using that as a source is like using the NYT as a source for how well Obama is doing or whether we’re doing enough to help the poor. My views are based on what I have seen and heard myself and what I have heard from actual Israelis. And by Israelis I mean everyday people not the media.

Oh and my comment about Rose’s writing was a legitimate criticism seeing as it took me having to read each clause twice just to get the gist of what she was trying to say. I also find it interesting that you sided with the person who supports the MB takeover in Egypt.

Why is this so hard? If you want to bomb the hell out of Iran then have congress vote on a declaration of war. State the objectives and define victory. Execute an return home. Period.

The endless, push button, war from above has to stop. We are supposed to be the good guys and follow the rules of law. The fact that we have spent over 20 years non-stop of dropping ordinance in the sandbox should probably tell you that it isn’t an issue of more ordinance. Enough is enough. Either declare war and win it or stop. The constant acts of war that we get away with is inexcusable. We wonder why central America and Iran and Russia and China work against our interests? How much ordinance have they dropped since the end of Desert Storm? How about us? If you can‘t vote on a declaration of war then don’t attack a country…period.

So the numerous bombings against Israeli civilians in foreign countries is being done why exactly? Because of all the things Israel HASN’T done to Iran? Israel has done nothing to provoke Iran and yet Iran feels compelled to openly endorse, sponsor, and arm the very terrorists that seek to annihilate Israel, openly call for Israel’s destruction, and start a nuclear program when their country isn’t even industrialized. And all that was before Israel began presumably assassinating scientists.

      @kid
Did it ever occur to you that those Persian Jews have been left alone for so long might be due to the threat of Israeli or international intervention?

Or perhaps that Iran‘s problem isn’t with Jews as much as it is with Jews having any level of political or military power? The latter is quite likely in my opinion when you consider the way Islam has historically treated Jews and Christians as second-class citizens.

We could even speculate that Iran and/or Iranians, either consciously or subconsciously, differentiates between Jews of Ashkenazi descent, like the majority (though not the entirety) of Israel, and Jews of Sephardic background, which includes Persian Jews. After all, Persia was a center for Judaism long before either Spain or central Europe. It would be hard for even a totalitarian regime like Iran to turn its people against the local Jews.

Because European and American Jews took Palestinian land, took Palestinian businesses, bulldozed Palestinian homes. Because Jewish Zionists are placing Palestinian people into ghettos and because these same Jews are walling in those ghettos; no different than the Reich.
