Jon Stewart Debunked: Claim that FOX News Viewers ‘Most Consistently Misinformed’ is ‘False’

Jon Stewart may be in for a reality check. Earlier this week, we covered his epic battle royale with FOX News’ Chris Wallace. Now, following the dialogue, a prominent watchdog is debunking one of the comedian’s anti-conservative statements. According to PolitiFact, a Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking web site, Stewart‘s recent claim that FOX viewers are consistently the most misinformed simply isn’t true.
In his interview with Wallace, the comedian asked, “Who are the most consistently misinformed media viewers?” Then, he answered himself, saying, “The most consistently misinformed? Fox, Fox viewers, consistently, every poll.” Sadly for Stewart, this simply isn’t true. PolitiFact, though, found this comment to be “false:”
We found two polling organizations that have produced periodic “knowledge” surveys differentiated by the respondent’s frequent news sources. One is the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, and the other is worldpublicopinion.org, a project managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland…
Viewers of at least one show on Fox scored quite well – The O’Reilly Factor, of whom 51 percent made it into the high knowledge group. That made it equal to National Public Radio — a longtime target of conservative complaints about liberal media bias — and only three percentage points behind Stewart’s own show, at 54 percent…
You can read the rest of PolitiFact’s analysis here.
This is not the first time that a liberal commentator or institution has claimed that FOX News viewers are less knowledgeable about current affairs. Back in December, The Blaze covered a University of Maryland study (“Misinformation and the 2010 Election: A Study of the US Electorate”) that came to similar conclusions. According to Meredith Jessup:
[The study] looked to judge how likely viewers of various news outlets were to believe false information (note: the study did not actually measure any sort of actual misinformation presented by some media outlets). According to the study, Fox viewers were “significantly more likely” to believe the following “misinformation”
That same month, The Blaze’s Jon Seidl reported that Competitive Enterprise Institute Communications Director, and licensed lawyer, Lee Doren had released a short video expose that exposed serious flaws in the aforementioned study. In the end, Doren contended that the findings were bogus. It seems, based on PolitiFact’s corroboratory information, that he may be correct.
Sorry, Stewart. Better luck next time.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 2:16pmActually, according the the very data being citing in this article, Stewart’s viewers rank much higher than Fox viewers in being informed. It‘s funny how so many people here just read the headlines and don’t actually read the source material. The only show on Fox that came close the the Daily Show was The O’Reilly Factor,, but even that show came up behind Stewart and Colbert in informed viewership.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 2:43pmOk so I guess they ask some questions about current affairs… ‘Pew’s methodology is not immune from critique. Most notably, it’s not clear whether knowing the answer to a few current-affairs questions translates into being “informed.”‘
Informed != Intelligence.
Report Post »MAProg
Posted on June 21, 2011 at 6:18pmBeing informed means that you have a knowledge of objective facts in reality. It may not necessarily translate to intelligence, but there is a strong correlation between the two since arguably, you cannot be intelligent without knowing said facts. Intelligence is hard to define, but in this context, I think it would be safe to define it as the ability to make logical conclusions through reason, based on objective facts about the world. As for your statement about Pew’s methodology: any study can be criticized, it’s the scientific method. The problem is we aren’t just talking about the Pew poll. The article cites several studies that all generally come to similar conclusions.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 2:07pmThe Stewart / Wallace debate was a classic example of why….
“We can’t have an honest debate with dishonest people” …nor should we try.
“In disquisitions of every kind there are certain primary truths, or first principles, upon which all subsequent reasoning must depend”. Alexander Hamilton
Stewart won that debate with persona, style, and lies. Honesty and truth are only a vague illusion for Progressives. Winning for them is when they get public opinion ‘on their side’ with their lies, hype, charisma, and by twisting and whitewashing the issues. The Commies did so well on that debate, that now the trolls are saying Glenn should debate Van Jones?? If Conservatives won’t debate …. they scream, “coward, chicken, all we want is a fair debate”, etc. (When what they really mean is… ‘all we want is a platform to spread more lies and recruit more imbeciles to our movement’).
This is a war, and to win a war you don’t allow your enemy to use his best weapons, you eliminate him with your best weapons. Their best weapons are lies, propaganda, and appearing “cool”. Our best weapons are GOD,TRUTH, AND THE CONSTITUTION, but we need to spread the truth without giving them a format. So I say, stand together and tell them with ONE STRONG VOICE on election day to ‘sit down and STFU’. If that doesn’t work…keep your powder dry. ….rf

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 4:28pmThis debate between Wallace and Stewart is a prime example of why Beck should NOT debate Van Jones. It is a no win situation. All Wallace did was give Stewart air time (on Fox News) to bash Fox News and its viewers. Not one thing was changed by this debate.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 4:46pmThe HATE and the STRESS in his voice when he said this told me that even HE didn’t believe it. He clearly sounds desperate when he is lying. His volume rises and his tone changes to a VILE sound when he spews such vitriol.
Personally, I don’t think he is very funny.
He laughs at his own jokes, and he smiles with egotistical hubris when he thinks he has made a point. He gets clearly nervous when he lies and he uses a different smile than when he is telling yuck-yuck jokes.
The HATE in his voice makes it impossible for me to watch him on television.
Oddly, on Fox News, he calms down and is less hateful – then he CHANGES and BOOM! Out spews the VITRIOL.

Hannity ranked fifth (just ahead of MSNBC’s liberal shows hosted by Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow) and O’Reilly ranked ninth. For the first time, Pew included Glenn Beck in its rankings, and the Fox host finished 12th — slightly ahead of Stewart’s own Daily Show.”

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 5:31pmForeignwatcher, you might want to re-read the article. Look how they came up with their results. Ask three or four questions to determine how “informed” someone is? I don’t view that as a real good way to determine how informed an individual is. The conservatives I talk to that watch Fox consistantly are very bright and knowledgable about current domestic and foreign affairs so either I run in different circles then what they covered in the poll or they cherry picked the conservatives they polled.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 5:36pmSo the study found that viewers of ONE Fox show were three points BEHIND in terms of “High Knowledge” of current events compared with those brain-dead unemployed stoners, The Daily Show viewers? Forgive me, but I’m at a loss as to how this disproves Stewart in the slightest.
And a Blaze story that cites other Blaze stories? That’s like building a house of cards on top of a house of cards. You’re all well on your way to making your own cozy little groupthink-based reality here. Thanks for allowing me to observe, and occasionally turn on the fan.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 8:49pmWait a second.
Fox news is the most watched news network in the nation by a HUGE margin. Soooooo 51% of an audience in the millions is larger than the 54% of an audience in the thousands. (yes I know Jon has higher viewrship than that but I am illustrating a point)
Bottom line… who freakin cares who’s smarter than what. Show me results.

This story proves Mr Stewart’s contention.
His statement was twisted into something he did not say.
Stop Stop
Mr Stewart did not say that fox viewers were uninformed. He said they were misinformed. Misinformed is a polite euphemism for told lies.
Like Obama is a socialist, Obama is a Muslim, Obama is a Marxist, Obama is out to destroy the country, Obama is a racist, Gemany’s National Socialist Party was (is) Communist Etc Etc Etc. The litany is endless.

It‘s the same old tune with you Progressives isn’t it? He didn’t mean this he meant that, taking over corporations, healthcare, and controlling banks and oil company‘s isn’t socialism, it’s just good business. Your words and actions destroy yourselves.
Seriously none of your liberal friends in power ever deny being socialists, however they do want to cover it up with pretty names like progressiveism. But seriously if you don’t know that Liberals are socialist than you should learn more about your own party. The actual term for you modern liberals is and I quote “Social Liberals” believing in social justice, tolerance, and social market economy. You are nothing like the Classic Liberals of earlier times which were more like the Libertarians of today. No instead the liberal party turned to “Socialism” to solve the economic crisis of the time which only made things worse for everyone. Even today we are still feeling the terrible after effects of FDR (Fannie Mae, New Deal) and Woodrow Wilson (Federal Reserve, WW!, and Amendments 17/18).
Now that is out of the way let me say this. John Stewart is bias, and he is a liar. This article proves it as what he said was and you should read it again: “The most consistently misinformed? Fox, Fox viewers, consistently, every poll.” Which in the polls it actually states otherwise, sometimes Fox viewers being the most informed. But in almost every poll they are above Stewart’s viewers.

A NEWS show scoring below a COMEDY show in its ability to inform its viewers on current events. And then pretending that is some sort of victory for journalism? …Thanks, but I’ve read enough.

Posted on June 22, 2011 at 2:44amStewart hung Wallace up by his Penards. Wallace copped that Fox tells “the other side of the story.” Unfortunately, Fox edited this statement out of the broadcast, so you have to go online to see the unedited version.
Stewart pointed out on his show that by telling “the other side of the story,“ Fox is obviously not ”fair and balanced.” But instead, Fox is just doing what it thinks is necessary to balance other sources of information. Conservatives, wake up – we don’t have to shuck and jive to win the argument, we don’t have to reject education and science, we don’t have to name-call – we can win the debate by just making our points.
As Huntsman said today when he announced – to paraphrase – it’s not going to be an election about who is a better American, but who has a better vision for the future. I’ve been a Romney supporter, but Huntsman bears a good look over, if for no other reason than the foregoing statement he made.
