Last night, Jon Stewart took on Fox News’s Gretchen Carlson and her recent story about the city of Tulsa, Okla. renaming its Christmas parade the “holiday” parade. He dubbed her “the Gretch who saved the war on Christmas”:

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 8:58amJon Stewart is an ******* plain and simple I am beginning to wonder if the audience applause was not coming out of a pre-recorded sound box because I find it hard to believe would actually find such dribble funny. That is unless the audience was hand selected socialists like this bonehead comedian. Sick, sick, sick.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 6:19pmActually The Daily Show ratings beat Glenn Becks quite a bit of the time lately. But I’m sure you already knew that fact by checking the ratings. Jon’s averaging about 2.2 million while Glenn has dropped to right around 2.05 million this fall. But hey, never let the facts get in the way of you dissing someone!

The problem starts when you idiots check the The COMEDY CHANNEL for your news… Jon is a puppet on the COMEDY CHANNEL and you are a puppet that watches him…

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 8:30amWe’re not celebrating a Holiday, or days off from work, yeah! No, it’s Christmas. The time we chose to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. That‘s why we’re offended by the dumbing down of our religious events, like Christmas… because of what they mean to us.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Report Post »1Christian1
Posted on December 7, 2010 at 8:29amThe bearded one that Gretchen was defending WAS Jesus not Santa. A HOLIDAY parade is about Santa. A CHRISTMAS parade is about CHRIST. Santa and other cute characters may be included in the parade for the fun of it. The point is that what is being celebrated is Christ’s Birth. Taking the word Christmas out of the parade’s name just makes it a secular event with no real meaning.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 8:27amThat’s right, the true spirit of the season. When someone wishes you “Happy Holidays” it’s not a wish of good will, it’s an active attempt to secularize, progressivize, atheize the season. The only reasonable, sane response is to be outraged and even boycott stores that don’t wish “Merry Christmas”, because if you don’t they will bar the doors of your church for Midnight Mass.
It’s not about spending time with your family and celebrating how you choose, it’s about… I don’t know… stopping people from broading it and bringing more people into the celebration?
dawgPound
Posted on December 8, 2010 at 1:47amNoooo, that’s not what it means when you say “happy Hollidays” What “Happy Hollidays” means is ” I don’t know WHAT religion, if any, that you belong to so i am not gonna assume that you are a christian because you could be muslim, or jewish, or hindu, or a buddhist” That’s what it means.

and ABC, I don’t know where you get your information but allow me to correct two of your more glaring errors:
Report Post »1. The truth is that twice as many Americans self-identify as conservative so, yes, the majority of the country is conservative, not liberal. Leftists merely think they are the majority because (a) the mainstream media delivers only the left’s side of every story and (b) because they never socialize with anyone who isn’t a leftist, they tend to think, wrongly, that the left comprise the majority of the
country.
2. The majority of Americans also self-identify as Christian so Obama’s assertion that “We are no longer a predominately Christian nation” is, like so much of what comes out of his mouth, erroneous; mere wishful thinking.
So while you may think that the majority of the country are applauding Jon Stewart, it’s really a very, very tiny sound.

One, Jon Leibowitz isn’t a newscaster. He‘s a comedian doing a job that Chevy Chase did in the late ’70′s. What’s the difference? Somehow, people actually take Leibowitz seriously.
As to commonality, come on. “Jon Stewart mocks Fox?” You could write this headline literally every day. There’s nothing to see here. Move along.

Sadly however, many under the age of 30 view Stewart’s program as news and the truth as I see it, Stewart is doing exactly as he intended – hiding behind satire and alleged humor to deliver a news perspective that occupies the extreme left bank of the progressive party. It’s been highly effective in a number of contexts and he knows (but surely can’t be happy about it in all regards) that his dumed-down audience mops it up and repeats it.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 10:39amTulsa has become much more mutli-ethnic in the last 70 years. The natural gas industry has attracted many non-Christians to the city. My high school friend, whose parents immigrated from Pakistan, and who is Muslim, works for a leading energy trading firm in the city. Another Jewish classmate of mine from college also has moved to Tulsa. The growing presence of people like that, who also bring their kids to the parade, has led sponsors and organizers to change the language to open up the event to all. As Jon Stewart’s little cartoon montage highlights in a funny way, calling it a holiday parade doesn’t actually diminish Christmas, nor does the parade, which features secular Santa Claus more than religious Jesus, really represent a religious event anyway. So the good of the name change would seem to outweigh the negligible negatives.
I think, however, that Stewart misses the point. Conservatives are projecting frustration that Christmas has become so commercialized and are projecting it on the organizers of this parade. Gretchen notes that corporate pressure causes companies to do what makes economic sense even when it diminishes or dilutes Christmas. That can be not only the decision by Walmart to have employees greet customers with happy holidays rather than merry christmas, but it also includes the overt commercialization and crass exploitation of the holiday to move product. It also reflects frustration at the Establishment clause that prevents more overtly religious icons from being included in the parade on an exclusive basis.
What conservatives need to understand is that non-conservatives have these same frustrations but on other issues. For example, the emphasis on corporate profits is causing outsourcing of higher paying middle class jobs to China or their loss to automation, which concerns more liberal people in America. They similarly have needed to come to grips with the inevitability of market forces wreaking change on our economy and, therefore, our society. Also, the Citizens United decision has frustrated liberals by making it tougher to regulate the political speech of corporations and special interest groups, conflicting with a different vision of how elections should be run and how much money should be allowed to sway them for tiny but well funded groups.
Americans have to understand that the majority of the country is neither conservative nor liberal, nor even highly religiously Christian, so the calls for these uncompromising positions–that advocates love to call wars–are non-tenable. Further, they make the groups calling for them look foolish. It would be better to invent new occasions and formats to celebrate Christmas as they wish, without demanding that a much more diverse country continue to pretend that such diversity doesn’t exist, or that the Constitution doesn’t say what it says. And while Stewart is hardly a newsman, nor does he analyze this fake war on Christmas from every angle, he is definitely one of the better social and media critics in America today, who has gotten this issue mostly right. Kudos Jon.
