Jon Stewart on Occupy Wall Street Protesters: ‘How Are They Not Like the Tea Party?’

On Wednesday’s episode of “The Daily Show, Jon Stewart decided to counter conservative attacks that have been waged against the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Using a number of soundbites, the comedian attempted to make conservatives look like hypocrites.

In forming his argument, Stewart claimed that the current conservative rhetoric being uttered against the leftist protesters is similar to the past slams liberals made against the Tea Party. Thus, he uses prominent conservatives’ praise for the Tea Party protests against them. The Atlantic’s Erik Hayden writes:

The takeaway line…was Stewart just leveling: “Look, if this thing devolves into throwing trash cans into Starbucks windows, nobody’s going to be down with that … but these protesters, how are they not like the Tea Party?”

Of course, one could argue that both sides — the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street — are similar in that they have taken to the streets and held rallies to support the ideals they hold dear. But outside of that, many would argue that there are sincere differences between the two.

The Tea Party was an organic movement. The same can’t necessarily be said about Occupy Wall Street now that labor unions — which have tens of thousands of supporters and members — have joined in on the “festivities.” The Tea Party didn’t have this luxury when planning its many gatherings and protests.

      Jon Stewart is RIGHT.

The Occupy Wall Street protestors simply targetted the wrong entity.

THE TEA PARTYand the WALL STREET PROTESTORS meet in the middle at the FEDERAL RESERVE BANK, the source of the monetary problem..

      This is the common ground.

The uneducated, uninformed, unengaged zombie army get their news from Stewart. There is no true comparison btwn the TP and OWS protesters. These drones wants the US taken apart and rebuilt into the sick socialist marxist progressive wet dream utopia. TP conservs etc want the nation RESTORED the Constitution followed and govt off our backs. Look at the OWS protesters have big unions, Soros, PR firm, film crews etc I dont recall any of that at the last TP protest compromised of old people and families.

Oh and one more obvious thing that distinguishes one from the other NO ONE has commented on…
(if I missed it correct me) but as of today I have yet to see 1.. O N E US Flag flying. The TP protests there were flags flying all over, people with signs of the Bill of Rights etc etc. I have not seen a flag flying anywhere in any of the vids or pics from this astroturf protest! Dear John…..I believe the difference between the Wall Street Protesters would be that the wall street protesters are brainwashed into being against capitalism., and freedom. They have been told that Obama will take from the rich and give to the poor..guess that’s not working out too well huh? As for the TEA PARTY. There eyes are open, they want freedom..the freedom to build businesses, to work and keep their money..they don’t want to be a slave to the government… They don’t want to support other countries while destroying our own. They are just people who want a chance…kind of like you John. The Tea Partiers love their country, want our Constitution back, one nation under God/ YWVH. We want our country back.

      @ V-MAN MACE:

If you think that the “FEDERAL RESERVE BANK, the source of the monetary problem” is the sole source or issue, you are sadly mistaken. Monetary policy is NOT going to fix our problems.

You are forgetting the fiscal policies (spending, taxing, etc.) coming from Washington and from various states within the Union.

The Tea Party and the Protestors want economic freedom. That’s where we meet in the middle. The Federal Reserve impedes free market economics.

That means free from manipulation by an unaccountable Federal Reserve. The Congress allows this to continue (except Ron Paul), so they are complicit, but the actual people lending money to private banks and foreign entities at .01% interest is the Federal Reserve itself, not neccessarily Congress.

The Fed tells the Congress to go to hell when they ask who the Fed lent money to.

The source of the monetary problem is the Federal Reserve bank, which is not federal, and has no reserves.

They print money based on air, lend it at interest, and tack it onto our national debt as if we are the ones who owe it. We don’t. It is unconstitutional, illegal, corrupt, and must be abolished. Period.

That will solve 95% of our monetary policy. The other 5% can be resolved by returning to sound currency based on gold or silver, and by electing people who are not bought and paid for by special interests, corporations, and banks.

They must be arrested and held accountable, along with the heads of those banks involved.

But we won’t know who were involved until the Federal Reserve is audited. So we audit it, then we abolish it. Then we return to sound currency. Simple.

Kennedy almost did it with Executive Order 11110, and tried to issue silver certificates, but we know what happened to him. They blew his head off.

The conservative media has given a bad rap to the Occupy Wall Street crowd… The truth is its a really diverse group of people with different viewpoints. Yea, A lot of them are socialist imbiciles, but I saw the ED show last night where he attempted to drum up a crowd behind him, like he did in Wisconsin.
Surprisingly, a large group of the crowd behind him were holding signs that said “Audit the FED” and were screaming “We don’t support you, Go home ED” the entire time.
Just saying, there are people that do understand that it is impediments to free markets which have caused such a disparity in wealth, as opposed to capitalism being the cause.

It’s just to end competition. Federal reserve is a major cause of all of our problems today, Big banks and corporations in bed with government vice-versa.

The federal reserve has been creating the wealth gap through inflation tax. All the big banks support vat tax, So you may want to rethink cain. federal reserve and wall street are like one, They both support the same goal, To make the rich richer. Or, the Tea Party is able to explain why they gather in the first place. Or, the Tea Party members’ actions support their words… and they are consistent. gimme a break. freedom works, the koch brothers, Ensuring Liberty Corp., and they had an entire news network publicizing and promoting them… “organic, grass roots”… please, give me a break.

they are very similar, in that both groups are basically uneducated deadbeats, puppets for someone elses wants and needs, who think that yelling accomplishes things.

In order to really hate…the first thing you have to do is distinguish yourself from what you hate. Follow that by defining your target as something less than human (an animal for instance), and you’re on your way.
In order to be someone who is hateful…always look for things that make you different. Follow that by ignoring anything that makes you the same. The glass will always be half empty and your heart will always be black.

      Clive:

The Tea Party was swiftly taken in hand by Freedom Works, the Koch Bros., etc. Likewise, OWS is in process of being taken in hand by unions and various other “left” groups. No lasting movement is entirely spontaneous, always a measure of control, direction and financing comes in.

Uneducated deadbeats? I think the OWSers are probably better educated in a formal sense than TPers. A good many so far seem to be college students or recent graduates who–for all the “get a job” rants you’ll read here–know perfectly well that their educations will be useless in getting jobs that will justify the money spent, all too commonly borrowed, on them.

They don’t want to be deadbeats. Most of them want to be productive members of society, though many of them probably feel an aesthetic distaste for capitalist entrepreneurship, and they certainly don’t want to work at Home Depot or Wal-Mart all their lives–”not that there’s anything wrong with it.”
They aren’t so much “enraged” as bored and frustrated, but they could easily be stirred to violence, given the right incident. Overeducated and underemployed people are always dangerous: consider Weimar.

The people I met at my first Tea Party rally were business people, plumbers, doctors, carpenters, lawyers, landscapers, architects, construction workers, engineers, secretaries, farmers, mechanics, contractors, pilots, nurses, boat builders, retailers, shippers, fishermen, investors, shoemakers, electricians, surgeons, cabinet makers, tile setters, artists, sail makers and cooks.
Those were the first fifty Americans I met
The only Americans I met who worked for the government were the soldiers and veterans.

Until now I thought Jon Stewart was a bright man who just had differing views. This seals the deal. If Mr. Stewart is too stupid to recognize that the vast majority of protestors appear to be young people who are expecting a certain standard of living, without having earned it. The Tea Party, although I think there are whacked out tentacles to that organization at times, I feel represents those who have paid taxes and want responsible governement controlling the purse strings in a responsible, frugal fashion. Am I mis-guided? Get spending under control, and stop castigating those who have made it vs. those who expect it. I don’t think anyone should have the right to vote until they start paying taxes. Have a dog in the fight, then you can vote.

They are similar in that it’s a group of people that are upset with the status quo and are vocal about it.

They differ in what they think will solve it.

I disagree with Hallowell on one point. The Tea Party is about as “grass-roots” as the OWS protests are. Tea Party has conservative think tanks and politicians behind it; OWS just recently had some local unions and agencies lend their support. I’m sure if they continue they too will have politicians behind them as well.

Yes? How many Tea Party members are part of other groups: NRA, religious groups, churches, conservative groups, political campaigns, etc? I‘m not sure what you’re trying to show… unless it’s that these people do have lives and are actually American citizens? Amazing, I agree!

I guess the better question is: what do you think “grassroots” means? If your post shows anything, it’s that the protests are from many groups with one thing in common: anger at the status quo.

You might not agree with the protesters’ goals or methods, but there are similarities to the Tea Party without a doubt. That you don’t want to see them says a lot about who you are; afraid to look in the mirror, perhaps?

Also you stated “I‘m not sure what you’re trying to show… unless it’s that these people do have lives and are actually American citizens? Amazing, I agree!” If they had lives they wouldn‘t be protesting for a week and wouldn’t have demands like these.

Occupy Demands And Civil Disobedience Guidelines

Proposed By Lloyd Hart – Demands: Free college education. Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment .Open borders migration, anyone can travel anywhere to work and live. Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Outlaw all credit reporting agencies. These demands will create so many jobs it will be completely impossible to fill them without an open borders policy. ( tell me this guys isn’t a lunatic).

Now that you mention it, if I were a college grad without a job, I might show up in Boston’s financial district, too. But I’d show up with a resume, a suit and a fresh haircut, not a sign reading “End Capitalism NOW!”

We desperately need a counter rally to the Occupy Wall Street-type events. I do not begrudge the OWS people the right to protest and be heard – I encourage them to speak their minds peacefully. However, I am certain that if the Tea Party-types do not get out with public demonstrations about personal responsibility and smaller government, then the OWS folk will soon dictate political discussion the same way the nearly uncontested Tea Party managed to do in ‘09. Thoughts?

I think in the end the proof will be in plain sight, right now there is plenty of video evidence of the OWS protests being everything the left accused the Tea Party of being (violent, hateful, conspiracy theorists, anarchists). The American People (most anyways) are smart enough to see what is right in front of them, its all over youtube. Plenty of video evidence of violence and hate on the Left, nothing but peaceful pragmatism on the Right. The media cant hide the facts anymore, not with the internet and social networking.
