Journalist Who Called Rolling Stone‘s ’Kill Team‘ Story ’Bullsh**’ Explains Himself to Glenn

As Blaze readers know, Rolling Stone recently released an article on the so-called “Kill Team” in Afghanistan about, in the magazine’s words, “How U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan murdered innocent civilians and mutilated their corpses – and how their officers failed to stop them.” The article, which features gruesome–incredibly grim–images of smiling soldiers posing with dead Afghan bodies, has of course demonized the military.
But journalist Michael Yon, who was embedded in the ‘Kill Team’ brigade, called the Rolling Stone’s coverage “bullshit,” as The Blaze reported. ”The guy should be a fiction writer, he’s dabbling in non-fiction. He’s trying to conflate the two,” he told Glenn Beck today (watch the clip below). Referring to specific incident in which two Afghans on a motorcycle are gunned down by the Kill Team, Yon says, “the killing was perfectly legal…just an honest combat killing is what it comes down to.”

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 8:38pmAm I missing something? Are only positive stories about the military allowed to be written? Yon says the author is writing fiction, but doesn’t dispute ANY of the facts of the article. It’s one thing to say that RS has a biased toward the military. In the article AND on the caption right next to the video it says that the “motorcycle kill” was not done by any of the “kill team” and while it suggests that the killing my have been justified the fact that they were filming and passing around the video is a violation of military standards. The only link to the “kill team” mentioned is that it was collected and shared by members of the “kill team”.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 8:56pm“Collateral damage” is a euphemism for murder. Murdering innocent civilians of a country that your outnumbered military is occupying is self-defeating.
What those people did was worse than terrorism. At least terrorism has some kind of goal or agenda that pushes it to violence. This was straight up sadism.

Why should they deserve treatment as human beings, they are mass murderers, multilators, haters of freedom and liberty. If given the chance and power to do so, the Taliban, Al Queda, Hamas and Hezbollah would make Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin look like rank amateurs

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 6:21pmYou realize he didn’t refute anything from the Rolling Stone article and actually said that soldiers have murdered civilians, and that in fact some have been sentenced, which actually corroborates the story. The most he said was that he conflated the story, not that it was not true. Also, he said he wasn’t actually with the kill brigade, the people who murdered the civilians, so he doesn’t have a point of reference.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 5:00pmMr Beck interviewed Mr.Yorn on his March 31st radio show. Mr. Yorn stated that he was not embedded with the unit in the Rolling Stone article but that the article was factual and that he even reported all these facts previously. Civilians were murdered.
So Why is Mr. Beck promoting this story?
Could the reason be that a good percentage of Mr. Beck’s fans, and contributors here, do not see anything wrong with killing innocent civilians, as long as they are Afghan Muslims.
In his perverted, manipulative way, Mr. Beck is simply drumming up support for the war by telling his fans that “Things are going well.”

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 6:01pmmarybethelizabeth – Go wag the dog of support for President Obama’s war somewhere. I‘m sure you will believe that all the bombs we are dropping only go after Gadhaffi’s troops right? Or do you and a good percentage of Mr. Obama’s fans, and contributors, not see anything wrong with killing military personel as long as they are Libyan Muslims? I am amazed at the number of liberals working in perverted, manipulative ways, drumming up support for the war in Libya by telling the American people that “Things are going well.” Please name me one military conflict in which innocent civilians were not killed? Those on the left can not live in the past any longer and keep pointing to all that Bush did. Obama has now done the same thing; started a “dumb” war. The difference is Bush was going after Al Qeada and the Taliban. Obama is supporting them!

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 8:35pm@marybeth, he said the unit that he was with killed civilians. It happens. The muslims will constantly conduct operations from urban areas. In Iraq we knew to look for children. If the kids would approach us for candy, the area was probably safe, if the kids sat at the gates of their homes, there were bad guys close, if the kids were inside the house then we knew there was a bomb. We had two incidents in Ramadi where insurgents attacked our patrols with suicide vests, while children were present and that went a long way for the sunni insurgency to eventually join us, and started attacking al Qaida in Iraq terrorists.
Report Post »Mr Yon (not Yorn) stated that the unit he was with killed civilians. This so-called “Kill Team” murdered civilians. You may suggest that there is no difference in what I said, but words mean something. To kill is an act that does not indicate the civilians were deliberately targeted, however, murder means these soldiers deliberately murdered individuals they knew were not combatants. Big difference. Rolling Stone used a video of a motorbike carrying two Taliban attacking a convoy, and tried to play it off as two innocent civilians who were murdered by the “Kill Team” when that is not what the truth was. Glenn Beck is not defending, nor is Mike Yon defending the killing of civilians rather they are correcting a great mistake deliberately made by Rolling Stone to increase the shock factor surrounding a truly horrid tale.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 8:45pmGlenn says we don’t have problems with Radicalism in Germany. According to the fella he had on todays show and what is in his book called A time to betray. We are all duped and the news we have available to us is useless. It barely covers what is really happening. Iran has agents in almost every country with weapons available waiting for the signal. In the book NATO sold major weapons to the Iranian government in the past. God save us.
