‘Joy Cometh in the Morning’: Watch Obama’s 9/11 Speech at the Kennedy Center

Text of President Barack Obama’s speech at the Kennedy Center commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, as delivered:

The Bible tells us, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

Ten years ago, America confronted one of our darkest nights. Mighty towers crumbled. Black smoke billowed up from the Pentagon. Airplane wreckage smoldered on a Pennsylvania field. Friends and neighbors, sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – they were taken from us with heartbreaking swiftness and cruelty. On September 12, 2001, we awoke to a world in which evil was closer at hand, and uncertainty clouded our future.

In the decade since, much has changed for Americans. We’ve known war and recession, passionate debates and political divides. We can never get back the lives that were lost on that day, or the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed.

And yet today, it is worth remembering what has not changed. Our character as a nation has not changed. Our faith – in God and each other – that has not changed. Our belief in America, born of a timeless ideal that men and women should govern themselves; that all people are created equal, and deserve the same freedom to determine their own destiny – that belief, through tests and trials, has only been strengthened.

These past 10 years have shown that America does not give in to fear. The rescue workers who rushed to the scene; the firefighters who charged up the stairs; the passengers who stormed the cockpit – these patriots defined the very nature of courage. Over the years we have also seen a more quiet form of heroism – in the ladder company that lost so many men and still suits up and saves lives every day; the businesses that have rebuilt from nothing; the burn victim who has bounced back; the families that press on.

Last spring, I received a letter from a woman named Suzanne Swaine. She had lost her husband and brother in the Twin Towers, and said that she had been robbed of “so many would-be proud moments where a father watches their child graduate, or tend goal in a lacrosse game, or succeed academically.” But her daughters are in college, the other doing well in high school. “It has been 10 years of raising these girls on my own,” Suzanne wrote. “I could not be prouder of their strength and resilience.” That spirit typifies our American family. And the hopeful future for those girls is the ultimate rebuke to the hateful killers who took the life of their father.

These past ten years have shown America’s resolve to defend its citizens, and our way of life. Diplomats serve in far-off posts, and intelligence professionals work tirelessly without recognition. Two million Americans have gone to war since 9/11. They have demonstrated that those who do us harm cannot hide from the reach of justice, anywhere in the world. America has been defended not by conscripts, but by citizens who choose to serve – young people who signed up straight out of high school; guardsmen and reservists; workers and businesspeople; immigrants and fourth-generation soldiers. They are men and women who left behind lives of comfort for two, three, four or five tours of duty. Too many will never come home. Those that do carry dark memories from distant places, and the legacy of fallen friends.

The sacrifices of these men and women, and of our military families, remind us that the wages of war are great; that while service to our nation is full of glory, war itself is never glorious. Our troops have been to lands unknown to many Americans a decade ago – to Kandahar and Kabul, to Mosul and Basra. But our strength is not measured in our ability to stay in these places; it comes from our commitment to leave those lands to free people and sovereign states, and our desire to move from a decade of war to a future of peace.

These 10 years have shown that we hold fast to our freedoms. Yes, we are more vigilant against those who threaten us, and there are inconveniences that come with our common defense. Debates – about war and peace, about security and civil liberties – have often been fierce these last 10 years. But it is precisely the rigor of these debates, and our ability to resolve them in a way that honors our values and our democracy, that is a measure of our strength. Meanwhile, our open markets still provide innovators with the chance to create, our citizens are still free to speak their minds, and our souls are still enriched in churches and temples, our synagogues and mosques.

These past 10 years underscore the bonds between all Americans. We have not succumbed to suspicion and we have not succumbed to mistrust. After 9/11, to his great credit, President Bush made clear what we reaffirm today: The United States will never wage war against Islam or any religion. Immigrants come here from all parts of the globe. In the biggest cities and the smallest towns, in schools and workplaces, you still see people of every conceivable race, religion and ethnicity – all of them pledging allegiance to the flag, all of them reaching for the same American dream – e pluribus unum, out of many, we are one.

These past 10 years tell a story of our resilience. The Pentagon is repaired, filled with patriots working in common purpose. Shanksville is the scene of friendships forged between residents of that town, and families who lost loved ones there. New York remains the most vibrant of capitals of arts and industry, fashion and commerce. Where the World Trade Center once stood, the sun glistens off a new tower that reaches toward the sky. Our people still work in skyscrapers. Our stadiums are filled with fans, and our parks full of children playing ball. Our airports hum with travel, and our buses and subways take millions where they need to go. Families sit down to Sunday dinner, and students prepare for school. This land pulses with the optimism of those who set out for distant shores, and the courage of those who died for human freedom.

Decades from now, Americans will visit the memorials to those who were lost on 9/11. They will run their fingers over the places where the names of those we loved are carved into marble and stone, and they may wonder at the lives they led. Standing before the white headstones in Arlington, and in peaceful cemeteries and small-town squares in every corner of our country, they will pay respects to those lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will see the names of the fallen on bridges and statues, at gardens and schools.

And they will know that nothing can break the will of a truly United States of America. They will remember that we have overcome slavery and Civil War; we’ve overcome bread lines and fascism; recession and riots; Communism and, yes, terrorism. They will be reminded that we are not perfect, but our democracy is durable, and that democracy – reflecting, as it does, the imperfections of man – also gives us the opportunity to perfect our union. That is what we honor on days of national commemoration – those aspects of the American experience that are enduring, and the determination to move forward as one people.

More than monuments, that will be the legacy of 9/11 – a legacy of firefighters who walked into fire and soldiers who signed up to serve; of workers who raised new towers, of citizens who faced down fear, most of all of children who realized the dreams of their parents. It will be said of us that we kept that faith; that we took a painful blow, and we emerged stronger than before.

With a just God as our guide, let us honor those who have been lost, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals that define our nation, and let us look to the future with hearts full of hope. May God bless the memory of those we lost, and may God bless the United States of America.

      I agree with TICKDOG. I may be wrong but it seems whenever Barry soetoro aka Barak Hussein Obama II attempts to quote Scripture–or has Michelle MABEL praise the troops with the typical white woman wife of a ditzy VP–or when he does attempt to connect with real Americans—the ones he once complained cling to their guns and their religion.It seems to me the fruit produced by that tree is bitter indeed. In other words he is a clear reflection of Roger Baldwin when he instructed the bishops of his church of the unbeliever to appear less socialist and more patriotic wrapping themselves in a lot of flags and beguiling the people into thinking it is they- the useful idiots used by the Communist Party who really do are about the Patriotic American. … NOPE I cannot bear to watch /listen to Obummer.

    I thought Obama’s reading of a Psalm at Ground Zero was possibly the most un-inspiring reading of a Bible passage I have ever heard.

    Having said that, Biden’s speech at The Pentagon was probably the best. I can’t imagine his boss every giving a speech like that.

      You can‘t give away what you don’t have. When we have heard him off teleprompter, it often reveals the “real” person with inaccuracies. (57 states?) Many others could be Prez if they could have a ventriliquist behind them telling them where to go, what to say next, how to act, and then vacation to stay out of the office so those behind the scenes can continue the onslaught against our nation. This is all so sad except for showing us we have been duped and to be more careful in the future. Many believe he is only a figurehead to get a certain segment of the vote and there are powerful handlers somewhere orchestrating much of what he is doing. Joy will come the morning after he is defeated in the next election when we have hope of getting our country back but it will take a LONG time to recover the lost years and the harming policies that were inacted and rammed through so rapidly. May God help us because if this is the fulfilling of the book of Revelation, then he may have a second term no matter what we do to help bring the fulfillment on with the Armageddon that is prophesied. Then we hold on to the God of grace and mercy (as we should be doing anyway) to bring us through it.

    Obama and his Bolshevik comrades in the Bolshevik democrat paty are are ALL sent home along with all the RINOs in the greast landslide defeat in our history.     Every reference to God was watered down – in true progressivist fashion.

    Shows that he still doesn’t bow a knee.

    I contrast this with Pres. Bush’s speech the day before, and it leaves me yearning for a man who obviously prays in the White House.

    Still, at least it wasn’t his typical self-centered “I” speech. The Teleprompter wrote a decent speech this time at least.

    Mr. Beck is trying hard to change our nation’s character.
    He is using Overton Window techniques to try to shift the debate in America.
    Mr. Beck does not support these values, especially the created equal part.
    Mr. Beck is arguing this year in predestination, that it is a person’s responsibility to accept their role in life; that they have no right to self determination.

      Oh please you moron. Obama doesn’t beleive what he had to read off his teleprompter. I am sure it damn near killed him to talk about what makes America great.
      He has done nothing in 3 years that resembles the sentiments in the speech. He is trying to destroy this country and mold it into his communist vision.
      I watched him do his reading from ground zero yesterday morning., It was about God and faith. There was no passion, no sincerity. You could tell he was very uncomfortable with what he was reading.

      The “joy that cometh in the morning” from this guy is the celebrating he and Michelle were doing on Sept 12th. The Muslims had struck a blow at the nation they are so ashamed of
      He will never know the sacrifices and the dedication it takes to be a professional or a citizen soldier, to Obumbler these young men are stupid and they don’t deserve the benefits they are promised. He thinks these benefits should be reserved for elected officials and appointed czars and their staffs. Medical care for wounded warriors costs so much and they should buy their own health insurance, these wounded heroes cost to much. The money and the hospitals would be better used for politicians, the real heroes.
      This guy is so full of that stinky brown stuff that comes out me backside, that he sickens everybody that pays attention to what he says.

      If our character has not changed (and it was during Bush’s administration) why was michelle so ashamed of her country then, but proud of it now that her husband is president? That almost sounds like whoeve wrote that speech was proud of America back in 2001. the thing I remember is that everyone looked the same at ground zero…..grey. There was no race. Now, with the race baiter in chief, everyone is paranoid of appearing racist.

      Instead of equality, Mr. Beck is telling his listeners that they can be keys; better than the rest of America.
      Mr. Beck has appointed himself the leader of the keys. You can only act at his direction. You must surround yourself with those that are like minded. There is no freedom if you follow Mr. Beck.
      Mr. Beck’s ten points of responsibility, which could easily be 6 or 14 but are ten for the symbolism, are based on a person knowing his place in life and accepting his fate. This is plain if you read the argument Mr. Beck presented when he announced his “laws of responsibility.” It is a return to the message of several years ago when Mr. Beck was yelling on his broadcasts telling everyone that they should fail.
      Mr. Beck’s fascist message is no longer subtle. Now it is loud and clear and in your face.

    The words were beautiful. Though I don’t believe he meant what he said to him they are just words. Words to sway other to believe he is doing what is right for this country. Which we don’t believe, he doesn’t believe what he said, he only read the words, how sad.

      Wow, his speech writer is going for the people on the Right in a big way. You can tell he did not
      write this speech because it was talking about loving this Country and God. I would not be surprised
      if he choked on those words. They are so alien to him, I bet he had to really really practice this one.

      I think it would be wonderful if God had lightning to strick his telepromtor for being such a hypocrite.

    I think it is interesting that – all of a sudden – he can talk about God and quote the Bible. The other day, he said we are “one nation UNDER GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all …” whereas he had left out that Under God part so many times before. This is nothing more than a man trying to get re-elected and having had someone tongue lash him for alienating the Christian right. Too little too late, buddy.

      It makes me sick to hear him talk about God. You can tell he doesn’t believe what he is saying. Yesterday would have been a beautiful day of remembrance if Obama would have been golfing or playing basketball.
      He does not believe in American exceptionalism. He is trying to destroy everything great about America.

    Do we really need to see this man read from a telepromter again. His words are not from his heart, they are from his on air producer. Just like a Hollywood script. He could care less about the people who died.

      My thoughts and hopes, exactly.

      GOD saw that man use HIS HOLY WORDS. I do not think our GOD takes lightly to satan’s quoting HIM or reading from HIS WORD, do you?

      The no man has no idea with WHOM he is messing. Would be interesting to be there when he meets our GOD face to face…. talk about “smoked!”

      Add to that list of would-like-to-see-their-faces-when-they-meet-our-GOD-face-to-face all of the no man’s faking buds and budettes…
