Joyful Moment: Mother Finds Out Daughter is Alive After She Went Missing in Oregon Woods

Jane and Pamela Salant Hiking Woods Oregon Daughter Missing Found AliveAfter all of the horror stories about what ends up happening to people who have gone missing, it is nice to see some good news for a change.

Pamela Salant and her boyfriend went hiking in an Oregon forest when the two parted ways to scout out a campsite. Salent, however, was not seen again for three days.

Fox News Insider reports that Salant was rescued from the bottom of a ravine, where she had been living off beetles and berries. She reportedly escaped with a broken leg and back.

Video cameras captured the moment Salant’s mother, Jane, learned her daughter was alive. Jane Salant then joined America Live to tell us how Pamela is doing now:

she needs to send bear grylls a thank you card or maybe the original survivor “survivorman” was where she learned the survival techniques. Or maybe she was just a country girl.

But other than inconveniencing the search and rescue people how was the hike?

I presume you’re joking because they are search and rescue teams. This is what they do and train for to help those who cannot help themselves. Perhaps you didn’t read the broken leg & back portion. Try hiking some of the back wood Oregon areas, they are steep and even experienced hikers get hurt. If accidents didn‘t happen we wouldn’t need search & rescue now would we?

Glad that she was found, and hope her injuries aren’t too serious.

Sounds like people who don‘t have a good idea of what they’re doing should stay out of the woods or pay better attention to what they’re doing though.

This is why you should include a whistle in your camping supplies. It takes very little energy to generate a lot of noise to help people find you. I’m glad this story had a happy ending.

Sorry, I have no pity for thrill seekers who waste resources because they don’t think about anything other than themselves and expect everyone else to come to their rescue regardless of the cost.

A “thrill seeker”? Common… She was out camping. Its not like she was out climbing mount hood in a snow storm. Accidents happen. In your world should we even have EMT’s? If someone is hurt in a car crash should we just let them die too?

This is a person that turned her computer off, escaped the TV and went outside. Something you’ll probably never do. Don’t consider her crazy, she probably stepped on some unsound ground near that ravine and fell down it.

This is why you never should go alone in the woods.

Hey GQQSER-you proceed on false presumption.
One does not go hiking and camping to be a thrill seeker.
Get out of the city and check out the woods once in a while.

“She reportedly escaped with a broken leg and back.”
It‘s good that she’s alive; but, really, can they minimize her injuries any more than that?
Another way to say it might be: she fell into a ravine; but, managed to survive by living off bugs and berries, despite having broken both her leg and back.
She was found and rescued 3 days later; which, of course, made her mom quite happy.

Glad she was found alive; hope she remembers that the Buddy System works on land as well as it does in water! How was it the boyfriend couldn’t find her? If he couldn’t do that, what would make anyone believe he could find a good camp site? I’m wondering if there is more to this story…

I would never eat bugs. 3 days is not too long to go without food. The broken leg and the cold at night are the worst things she was dealing with. It is wonderful that she had water and berries. I spent 3 days in the Three Sisters Wilderness Area in Oregon back in June, 1971. We were doing “solos” on purpose, as part of a character training exercize. So, I know how cold it can be at night. But the broken leg and broken back. Oh, how horrible.

@boxofpens I know the area. I bet she just fell. (Probably didn’t get lost or get kidnapped.) Maybe she didn’t look where she was going, she maybe walked too close to an edge, or something like that.

Probably so. I figured she probably fell down the ravine, however we shouldn’t have to be guessing what happened here. It just seems like the story is really incomplete.

Good news when they are found safe and alive. Would like to hear the rest of the story as to why the couple separated to each go their separate ways around the lake to find a camp site. Doesn’t sound like they were familiar with the area or had maps. Not the smartest thing to do…..

I know I’m crazy, but I love to hike with my kids. We took them hiking with us when one was in the back pack & the other in a front pack (greatest technical error of my life… 15 months apart) anyway, they knew from the time they were probably three to never go on a hike in the woods without being prepared for the worst. If we expected bad things to happen they wouldn’t be called “accidents”. At the very least my gosh, just like most of the posts say, a mirror, whistle, and a jacket. Good Lord… Well, hopefully she learned this guy is not a wilderness man. The dude didn’t seem to excited she was found eh?
