Judge Goes Absolutely Berserk and Berates Local Pastor During Divorce Hearing: ‘You Disgusting Piece of–’

If you have the volume on your computer turned up, turn it down. And you might want to put some earplugs in.

What you’re about to hear is a local family court judge in Winfield, WV, absolutely lose his mind during a divorce hearing involving a local pastor. The judge, William M. “Chip” Watkins III, was accusing Rev. Arthur D. Hage of talking to the media after a previous hearing. That conversation, he believed, led to an article about the judge and his wife that apparently included a picture of his house and information about his residence. So when Hage showed up for another hearing, Judge Watkins was irate. And he let loose, threatening to incarcerate Hage for life.

West Virginia Judge Watkins Screams at Local Pastor During Divorce Hearing

The West Virginia Record explains what happened during the May 23 hearing, which was called to settle a discrepancy over Hage and his wife selling their house:

Shortly after the hearing started, Watkins, calmly, said, “Mr. Hage, if you say one word out of turn, you’re going to jail. Do you understand me?”

To which Hage replied, “Yes.”

Then, Watkins berated Hage for speaking to a reporter following the previous day’s hearing. On May 22, Watkins heard a motion made by [his wife] Lillian’s attorney, Christine Wallace with Legal Aid of West Virginia, that Arthur be held in contempt for speaking with third parties about Lillian’s mental health in violation of the “permanent” protective order Watkins included in their final divorce order.

After that, Watkins accused Hage of being responsible for an article that appeared later that day on a Putnam County news site regarding Watkins and his wife, Rhonda, receiving a letter in the Fall from their homeowner’s association in Brierwood Estates in Teays Valley about them “not being in good standing” with their annual fees. The article included a picture of the Watkins’ house.

When Hage attempted to say something, Watkins screamed, “Shut up! Did I tell you to speak?”

“You put up a picture of my house,” he continued. “Because of you, my wife is there alone, and my house has been vandalized four times. You realize that, of course, as I‘m sure you’re probably in on it and laughing about it.”

Then, Watkins says “You, you disgusting piece of …” and pauses for a moment. Upon resuming his tirade, Watkins points his left hand at Hage and says, “I swear to you. You’re responsible. I’m holding you personably responsible for anything that happens to my house.”

“I promise you that if see so much as anyone blanketing my home, my wife, my family, you and me are going to have a problem. …

“Well, buddy, it’s personal. It’s personal, and I can promise you, you will not hear the end of if from me.”

For a moment, Watkins took a breath and started to recuse himself from the hearing. However, he stopped in mid sentence only to say, “I’m too angry to even be appropriate in this case.”

Nevertheless, he continued to berate Arthur, and threaten to have him incarcerated.

“You’re personally responsible,” Watkins said. “Please understand that. I will resign this bench and I will personally see to it that you never see a free day in your life.

“Do you understand? You’re going to jail,” he added. “I swear to God.

Three minutes into the hearing, Watkins gets calmed down, and apologizes to Lillian and Wallace, and formally begins the hearing. Though admitting to being “very upset,” Watkins refuses to recuse himself from it.

[Emphasis added]

But he wasn’t done there. After Watkins ordered Hage to pay some money, Hage tried to explain he didn’t have it. Watkins lost it again:

“You’re supposed to be a man of God,” Watkins says in a raised voice. “How come you swear to tell the truth, but the very first thing out of your mouth is a lie. It’s a lie. It’s a damn lie, and you know it’s a damn lie.”

When Hage attempted to talk, Watkins screamed “Shut up! I didn’t tell you to talk! Did I tell you to talk? What did I tell you right at the beginning of the hearing? Are you deaf?”

Later in the hearing, Watkins granted a motion by Wallace that nearly $1,500 be deducted from Arthur’s share of the proceeds from the sale of the house to cover expenses, including her fees. Toward the end of hearing, Watkins said because Arthur’s actions, or lack thereof, were an attempt to “torpedo the deal” in violation of the protective order, he was going ask Putnam County Prosecutor Mark Sorsaia consider bringing criminal charges against Hage.

“I am going to refer this to the prosecuting attorney with a strong recommendation he be prosecuted for violating the protective order,” Watkins said. “Maybe a little time in the Western Regional Jail will straighten you out.”

Here is the shocking video:

Hage has since filed an ethics complaint. Watkins has since recused himself from the case.

Definitely West Virginia ….Gossip and antics can really get going in some of those small towns, people love to talk … Especially when a judge is involved…. The left does this crap all the time though and the judges protect them with 1st amendment right’s .. Funny when it is turned around the other way, the judge don’t like having his name, address and photo put up in the public .. Imagine how those private citizens feel that get protested by some of these idiotic groups like OWS ..

The judge should have recused himself before even handling the case but he did not which makes him even more guilty because justice in any case should be blind right? Its tempting to now have the power over someone who did you wrong, but thats where your supposed to take the higher ground…I lecture because I’ve recused myself several times where I did have the power and or control to make someones life miserable for revenge. Its not good!

The judge is a complete idiot…if the article came out that morning, then his house was vandalized four times in one morning? and how does the Rev. have anything to do with that crap mouthed judge’s wife being at home alone disabled? What a load of BS. How does that judge know if the Rev gave the reporter a pic of his house or not? I think it had to do with him no paying his association dues, not because of the Rev. I can‘t stand the sanctimonious judges who think they’re above the law, and do and say as they please. He should resign his bench today.

Family Court judges in Divorce Court destroy lives every day.
The pastor said he didn‘t have the money to pay and the judge said he didn’t care.
In my divorce case, I submitted truthfully that I did not have the money the judge ordered me to pay. His response? ” I don’t care”. This was after 8 months of dragging it out so the lawyers and judge could make more from me. The system is not fair and isn’t designed to be.
Time for the judge to “get his”. Not all judges are bad, but those who are deserve everything they get.

Judges have wayyyy too much power in this country.

We need the rule of law, but it’s tipped too far in favor of encouraging Gestapo-type judges to misbehave.

How many have we read about that have been guilty of actual criminal conduct and conduct very close to it?

Too, many of them have given strong evidence of having mental disorders, like the one who was using a penis pump during court sessions.

There needs to be better checks and balances on the legal system. Right now all we have are lawyers judging lawyers in cases of crime and misconduct.

We need more than that, especially since the highest judge in the land, John Roberts, issued adecision based entirely on political reasons.

The lifetime tenures need to go also. It’s an invitation to conduct bias decisions and escape criminality.

Wait wait wait… “Pastor” Hage violated a protection order that was established to protect his ex-wife within hours of it being finalized, AND slandered and put Judge Watkins’ family in danger, and we’re all upset about the judge blowing a gasket? Frankly, I think that if more judges told people directly and with no ***** footing around that there wasn’t going to be any tolerance for the very sort of shenanigan that “Pastor” Hage has perpetrated, there would be a great deal less nonsense in our court systems. Good for the Judge. He didn’t go far enough. The so-called “Pastor” should have begun his prison ministry that very day, in my opinion.

The video doesn‘t explain much about the judge’s “protective order”. Normally, a protective order would have no power to prohibit the other party from meeting with reporters. That would be a “gag order”. The judge, the moment he realized that he could not be impartial had a legal obligation to recuse himself, however, he failed to do so prior to beginning the hearing and plowed right on. Mr Hage made a serious error, though, by failing to employ an attorney. Any competent attorney would have had this moron up on charges and he would have called a halt to the proceedings and asked the judge to recuse himself. This guy is a pastor, but he obviously is pretty arrogant as he hasn‘t complied with any of the judge’s orders prior to this outburst. The judge’s behavior is repugnant. The pastor’s actions, if he DID provide a photo of the judge’s house, were stupid, but NOT illegal. At most, the judge could bring a civil action against the man, but he cannot impose punishments on him. The judge referring the matter to the prosecuting attorney based on him not paying some money is ludicrous. In no way does failure to pay constitute violation of a protective order. It may be contempt of court, but it is not handled by the prosecuting attorney. Hopefully, the prosecutor trounces the judge for attempting to use his office for personal vendettas. The next judge should erase all decisions made by this idiot and start over. Nothing of what happened was even remotely “impartial”.

The pastor’s attorney is an idiot. the very second the judge stated he was recusing himself he should have demanded the bailif take him into custody for threatening his client with in a courthouse which is a criminal offense in every state of the nation. When a Judge recuses themself which he did the second he stated it the very first time, his subsequent actions are those of a private citizen and not of a jurist. The threats he then made are felony level as they are made within a House of Justiceand in specific within a divorce court which adds additional criminal riders for the protection of the involved parties due to the rash of killings in divorce courts across the nation in the late seventies and early eighties…

@MILMOM: I’ll respond to you: In the video you’ll hear that there was mold at one time in the house but that damage had been repaired about 4 years ago. (or it was in the TEXT). IT was a smarmy trick for this sleazy “Pastor” to try to do…he fights like a girl (a 5 year old girl) . I have years of experience in law and real estate and was quite confident in my assessment of this situation. He’s not the first smarmy soon-to-be-ex but doesn’t want to be to try something like this. One doesn’t get a restraining order on themselves unless there is cause. His action with this buddies trying to cause the Judge problems is another example of his immaturity. I bet he thinks he’s hot stuff. God will deal with him. I wish peace for his wife. He stood up for me when I was down and I’ll stand beside him now. He is extremely ill and frail and his wife’s legal aide lawyers have steam-rolled him and divided the spoils. Art kept his cool under constant personal attacks and threats and I respect that, I couldn’t have done the same. This judge can’t even spell ad hominem, much less define it. The newspaper dug up the homeowner‘s association letter and photo of the house on it’s own – not the pastor – and 4 vandalism attempts the morning it was published? Someone in the courthouse leaked this video – not the pastor, but he’ll be blamed. Yes, there’s some damned liars in that courtroom, but it’s not pastor Hage. Unless freedom of speech has been recinded, anyone has the right to answer questions of the press outside the courthouse and this judge who has been involved in more than one debacle in the past, including the PPO. He didn’t even pretend to be imparcial or judicious. Art was targeted and threatened from the first sentence. There is no justice, our system is badly broken. Those who defend this judge without knowing the history of the two years of insanity the court and lawyers have imposed on Pastor Art deserve to face such a fascist when their spoude goes insane, abandons them and then sues for everything. Idem est non probari et non esse; non deficit jus, sed probatio. What does not appear and what is not is the same; it is not the defect of the law, but the want of proof. This judge is from the freaking stone age and should be deported immediately to rejoin his kind in middle freaking east! Somewhere like Iran should suffice, where he’ll fit right in. Honestly, hanging is too good for this POS!

There are some pastors out there who are slime. They have no business working for God, but than again, the Bible say’s God uses even the jawbone of an ass if it suits his purpose.

This pastor talked with the Media and pictures of the Judges home were posted. It hardly seems a coincidence that the Judges house would be broken into after this.

For myself, I would almost welcome anyone to try breaking into my home (not really) but I’m always ready for anything.. While my husband sleeps, I investigate every noise that seems out of the ordinary. Just try breaking into my home, you’ll be carried out on a stretcher.

And, from this story, you get to your end results, HOW? The fact the pastor spoke to reporters does not mean that HE IS THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STORY ON THE JUDGE’S FINANCIAL PROBLEM WITH THE HOME-OWNERS ASSOCIATION. Although not all stories about people’s homes have pictures, many do these days when Google Earth supplies them so easily. Think how many you saw on the Blaze in the last year! As far as the vandalization goes, isn’t it natural to assume that with each court case in which he publicly takes a side, the other side is going to be unhappy? Why only a congregate from the pastor’s church who might do something to his home or family?

However, we don’t really know the whole story. Does this judge have a history of this kind of thing? Why is it the Pastor’s fault about what the Journalist did? Did the Pastor write the article? Is it not the Pastors right to speak to the media? Was he under a gag order? There are some details that are kind of important to this story that either aren’t in the Blaze article or maybe I missed them.

I’d say the Judge was in the right. How refreshing to see personal responsibility and loyalty trumph any job.All of you seem to forget the good pastor broke the protective order to his wife[ex now] and the judge both counts.Adnittedly he might not have known what the reporter would do with the interview but this should have crossed his mind.As to recusal He considered it.He didn’t do so.Furtermore it doesn’t seem like there was any bias on the actual ruling. The only thing I see is that he upheld the letter of the law rather than spirit[only in a sense though].If the man had of shut his mouth he would have stood a much better chance of the judge working with his financial situation.
You can’t constantly threaten someone, especially someone with no true connection, to the original problem at hand. Not without expecting some form of justice to be administered. The judges wife is suffering for something she has 0 control over,If that isn‘t enough of a reason for any man who loves his wife to snap I’d like to know just what the hell is?

I disagree. A judge is an officer of the court, should behave accordingly. There is no excuse under the earth’s sky for his outburst. If he was that angry, he should have turned the case over to another judge then perhaps charge the pastor applying the proper laws. To me the judge acted like an intimidating thug and bias to the core. We should expect exemplary behavior from those who are dispensing the laws.

Gave the other nonrelated person the benefit of the doubt over me (a relative)….it was one of the worst experiences of my life.
I will never go into a family courthouse ever again (God willing).
