Judge Sets New Bond for George Zimmerman at $1 Million

ORLANDO, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) — George Zimmerman will be permitted to leave jail on a $1 million bond as he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge in the fatal shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, a judge ruled Thursday.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester granted bond to George Zimmerman for a second time. Lester had revoked Zimmerman’s $150,000 bond last month after prosecutors told the judge Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had during an April bond hearing. Zimmerman returned to jail June 3.

Prosecutors said a website Zimmerman created for his legal defense had raised $135,000 at the time of his first bond hearing. Zimmerman and his wife did not mention the money then, and Shellie Zimmerman even said the couple had limited resources because she was a student and he wasn’t working.

The judge made his decision after listening last week to Zimmerman‘s attorney and a forensic financial analyst explain why he wasn’t more forthcoming.

The judge expressed his unhappiness with Zimmerman and said that his actions suggest a possibility that he was preparing to flee to avoid prosecution.

“Under any definition, the defendant has flaunted the system,” Lester wrote in the order. “The defendant has tried to manipulate the system when he has been presented the opportunity to do so.”

Lester said he was granting bond because Zimmerman posed no threat to the community, and Florida law requires that most defendants receive bond if they pose no threat and can assure their presence for trial. The judge’s order requires Zimmerman to be electronically monitored and residing in Seminole County, prohibits him from opening a bank account or obtaining a passport and implements a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. Zimmerman had been allowed to leave Florida under the conditions of his first bond release.

Prosecutors previously argued Zimmerman and his wife talked in code during recorded jailhouse conversations about how to transfer the donations to different bank accounts. For example, George Zimmerman at one point asked how much money they had. She replied “$155.” Prosecutors allege that was code for $155,000. Their reference to “Peter Pan” was code for the PayPal system through which the donations were made, prosecutors said.

Zimmerman‘s attorney Mark O’Mara sparred with prosecutors over those finances last week and questioned why his client is in jail at all, arguing that Martin’s actions led to his death.

O‘Mara ultimately decided against calling his client to the stand during last Friday’s hearing, unlike during the first bond hearing, when Zimmerman apologized to Martin’s family.

The defense attorney called Zimmerman’s father to testify, and played a chilling 911 call from the Feb. 26 night when Martin was killed. The call includes a disputed cry for help and the fatal gunshot. Robert Zimmerman said he was sure that was his son’s cry.

Shellie Zimmerman has since been charged with perjury. She is out of jail on $1,000 bond and her arraignment is set for July 31.

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting the unarmed 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 at a gated apartment community in Sanford. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Martin’s parents and supporters claim that the teenager was targeted because he was black and that Zimmerman started the confrontation that led to the shooting. Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

The 44 days between the shooting and Zimmerman’s arrest inspired nationwide protests, led to the departure of the Sanford police chief and prompted a U.S. Justice Department probe.

      - La Raza or other Democrat political spoils groups might disown them.

      But Zimmerman looks awfully Hispanic. If the Black Panthers lynch him, I don’t think the Hispanics will idly sit by regardless of what the Democrat Hispanic intelligentsia say.

      Just publish a picture of a lynched Zimmerman & see If many black people, the good & the bad (Black Panthers et al), feel threatened.

    The courts of this nation are run by anti-white racist and liberals. Zimmerman defended his life and he is being treated as the criminal because he shot a black. The liberal government types want to make sure they use this case as an attack on the second amendment and the blacks want to attack whites at will so they want the case highlighted. They want to make whites afraid of taking up for themselves. Zimmerman is not being treated fairly. He should pay his bail and escape. That would enrage the black racist and the government. We could sit back and laugh..and maybe even help him get away.

      I don’t know what the big hooey is all about. The blacks and Latinos have been killing each other for 100 years. If I had a gun and a hoodlem was beating me up I would have shot him. I always carry and have a carry permit. Here in Oklahoma come Nov. 1st we go to open carry. All you have to do is get a holster and have your permit on you. When we went to carrying with a concealed gun our crime dropped by 47% and I think it’s going to take another nose dive. The hoods will see some of us but a lot of folks will still conceal their guns. This judge is just a flat raciest – he should be color blind.

      Answer me this: Would you be happier if the “unarmed teenager” killed Zimmerman, which from all the facts seemed to be his intent?

      Maybe he does not have one, not everyone has a passport. Otherwise, he is on the list of travel restriction of every airline, possibly on a no-fly list. So, even with a passport, he wouldn’t get far. OTOH, it is possible to leave the country without a passport.

      Part one: his finances were in the state of flux. He did report the state of financed truthfully, before people stated sending money for a defense fund. Part two: It is not clear whether he set up paying off the non-court related bills from the defense fund, or from other income. Unless proven that he did, this is an unsubstantiated allegation.

      Duplitious. Martin had a rap sheet, though not yet caught in the net of criminal justice. he was on the trajectory to get a solid criminal record soon past his juvenile condition.

    The FL DA and the judge are using Zimmerman as an example for why they don’t like the Stand Your Ground law. They are punishing him as much as they can since they pretty much know he is not going to be found guilty. They want to inflict as much pain as possible. Here are two people who have been tossed in to a mess who have never had money and are facing what they perceive to be huge legal bills. Now the judge in effect has taken all their money they could use for defense and made them use it for bond. The very reason they might have been holding back on the disclosure just became reality.

      @GZ22LL most criminal defendants don’t have money to pay for a defense, they are still defended by Public Defenders. 1. Zimmerman was stupid for talking into a jail phone. everyone knows those are recorded and he had to have known that they would listen to his calls 2. He should have told the judge everything they knew about their finances

    A judge is not to interject his emotions into any of his decisions.

    This judge must surely know by now – that the SPECIAL PROSECUTOR – Angela Corey – filed her Probable Cause Affidavit – w half-truths and significant material ommissions – to have this judge proceed w Second-Degree Murder charges against Zimmerman –
    during the time the Special Prosecutor was actively concealing – from the court – that George Zimmerman had substantial and serious injuries sustained from Trayvon Martin – BEFORE TM was shot.

    Now the judge is also “pretending” he does not know Zimmerman had injuries?! The judge is “pretending” he does not know that the Special Prosecutor is participating in prosecutorial misconduct?

    Maybe that is good. It will help George Zimmerman get off on charges – that should have NEVER been filed.

      The judge is totally misusing the application of bail. Bail is set to insure the accussed will appear at subsequent hearings, not to pre-punish the accused. The Judge should re-read the 8th Amendment to the Constitution, assuming he has read it already.

    Can we stick to the facts?
    People donated money to insure that Zimmerman got a fair trial.
    That money has now been confiscated by the court, never to be returned.
    The donors got screwed, and Zimmerman now is in jeopardy of not paying his lawyers.
    I thought bond was to insure that the defendant would show up for trial, not ruin his life forever.
    Was there any doubt Zimmerman was going to show up? No.
    It’s a sad day for “justice” in the legal system, but we all knew that.

    Zimmerman is supposed to be the answer to the failed Fast and Furious. Why is this case so important to the administration when like cases without the same demographic were swept under the rug and the radar of the media? If we learn nothing else from this case we should learn that it is the poster-child for those who would take away the right to bear arms and who want a race-war. Chaos and the lack of ability to protect oneself gives the government power over all of us in the name of providing stability from the destruction that they have engineered. Myopic people don’t see the bigger picture and the manipulation of information to increase discord. Unfortunately Zimmerman doesn’t have a chance of being treated fairly because it is now a “cause celebre”.

      Zimmerman passed a lie detector test. Sure you can fool one but that is only a small fraction of people. say 10% of much less. So the preponderance of the evidence is on Zimmerman’s side.

      Clearly, you’re a little slow. I guess in your screwed up mind, shooting someone who is repeatedly slamming your head against the concrete is “murder.” You do realize people can die from getting their head slammed against the concrete? All the physical evidence at the scene corroborates Zimmerman’s account; including a broken nose, and lacerations to the back of the head.

      High on prescription pills? Huh? You must be privy to more details then the rest of us. Or, you’re just making things up as you go.

      Beat up a cop? Nope. Wrong again. He argued with a police officer who was arresting his friend for underage drinking. The cop then arrested him for resisting arrest. He was never charged. If you “beat up cop” believe me, you get charged.

      Sounds like you need to start using the brain God gave you and stop depending on MSNBC to do the thinking for you.

      Hey CLIVE….I see you still need to keep up FALSE NARRATIVES to distract from that fact that Trayvon Martin as a black thug punk gangster – caught a bullet – when he viciously beatdown the Neighborhood Watch Captain.
      btw, Z was arrested for grabbing an undercover police officer – who was man-handling a women in public.
      Get your stories straight.
      However, Trayvon Martin beat up a Bus Driver – “just for the hell of it” – and only received probation – when he should have gotten a jail sentence. Maybe if his parents would have had an intervention- to halt their son’s BAD behavior, TM might still be alive today. After all, when TM had defaced school property with his gangster VULGARITIES, he was found with burglary tool and a bunch of jewelry = dozens of women’s rings – refusing to admit how he had acquired his “loot”.
      TM was on ANOTHER suspension from school for “fighting” = assaulting “unarmed” people he was targeting, when TM targeted George Zimmerman for a vicious beatdown – for interfering w his plans for the night = “casing” the neighborhood.
      The FALSE NARRATIVES that NBC and MSNBC devised to boost their Ratings – causing NBC execs to be FIRED – is as deceitful as TM’s parents, Sharpton & Jackson using photo of TM at 12-yrs-old to give the false impression of “innocence” – other than the Real TM at 17-yrs-old – as a punk thug – w a mouthful of gold teeth and tattoos – showcasing himself over the internet as “No_Limit_Nigga” – boasting of his conqu

      As long as he isn’t tried by a jury and not this crooked judge, and there are objective, fair-minded people on the jury he’ll be exonerated.

      This case could be won on simply normal self-defense grounds.

      Getting attacked and viciously assaulted by a black thug, for no reason other than he didn’t like to be monitored while he was casing residences to steal from, puts the thug in line for a well-deserved bullet. Strictly legitimate self-defense.

    This man is doomed. He will never get a fair review, much less a fair and impartial trial.

    You see, home owners are all suppose to lay over and just take whatever thieving criminals have to dish out. We’re all supposed to cow to both criminals and corrupt governments in equal measure.

As long as he wasn’t trying to get a court appointed attorney, I don‘t think it’s any of their business if he has a billion dollars. How much money does Trayvon’s family have?       None. Where did I say it did? I think he’s innocent of murder; I just think he’s not an innocent angel like you seem determined to paint him. The guy killed an unarmed teenage; he just didn’t murder him (in my opinion). It’s a tragic situation, not a crime… but lying under oath and bypassing federal reporting laws on money ARE crimes.

      Of course he is; and he is legally bound to disclose it to receive an accurate and fair bail obligation. He lied.

      See above. By lying to the judge about his finances, he secured a bail amount that was much lower than it should have been.

    What ever happened to being innocent until proven guilty. I understand that George and his wife had a web site to help colloect money for his defense but that hardly seems a good reason to raise his bail to such a high level. I guess the court would prefer that he did not have the resources to defend himself from the court as well as the media. Well at least the judge will get good coverage from this. And lest anyone should think I am biased, I have not idea who is more at fault in this matter, I just would like to see justice be doled out in a fair and unbiased manner.

      He collected $155,000. Now that seems like a lot of disposable income before or after taxes. But I would ask other m(not you of course), how much will his defense cost, 1/2 mil, 1 mil, 3 mil, …?

      I think it is typical that you have to put up 10% of bail money, There is an easy $100,000 right there.

      Maybe excessive bail is a way to make sure he cannot hire effective legal counsel.

      This judge and prosecutor are no more than a kangaroo court.

      If they think they’re appeasing the black criminals with their actions, they better think again. This whole area is disgusted with these crooks.

      We’re looking atways now to eliminate both of them from office. This corey will be the hardest to eliminate, because she’s running unopposed, but we might be able to get the governor to remove her.

      The Nifong case wasn’t as egregious as this.
