Julian Assange Makes First Appearance Since Taking Refuge Inside Ecuadors Embassy: Calls on Obama to Renounce Witch Hunt Against WikiLeaks

Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks makes a statement from a balcony of the Equador Embassy in London, Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012. (AP)

LONDON (The Blaze/AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has called on President Barack Obama to end a “witch hunt” against his secret-spilling website, after appearing in public for the first time since he took refuge inside Ecuador’s embassy in London two months ago.

The 41-year-old Australian was on Thursday granted asylum by Ecuador as he seeks to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over sexual misconduct allegations.

“I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witch hunt against WikiLeaks,” Assange said Sunday, speaking from a small balcony.

He also called on the U.S. to release Pfc. Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier who has been charged with aiding the enemy by passing the secret files to WikiLeaks and is awaiting trial.

“The U.S. war on whistleblowers must end,” Assange said.

He framed the battle against WikiLeaks as the U.S. turning its back on the “revolutionary values it was founded on.”

“As Wikileaks stands under threat, so does the freedom of expression and the health of all our societies,” Assange said, according to the BBC. “We must use this moment to articulate the choice that is before the government of the United States of America. Will it return to and re-affirm the revolutionary values it was founded on? Or will it lurch off the precipice, dragging us all into a dangerous and oppressive world in which journalists fall silent under the fear of prosecution and citizens must whisper in the dark.”

Assange remains out of reach of British authorities — who have vowed to turn him over to Sweden — as long as he remains inside the embassy. If he sets foot outside, he faces immediate detention by the dozens of British police who surround the building and are stationed inside a shared lobby.

A US SEAL TEAM SHOULD AIRLIFT TO HIS LOCATION AND FIRE BULLETS INTO HIS BODY

Assange released State Secrets of the USA that damage our security and endanger the lives of our people. The USA is at war and Assange is an enemy. The US has every legal right to attack and destroy Assange. Under international law, the US has the right of reprisal. This would also be a warning to others that the America people are a formidable adversary.

Actually…if there was anyone who wanted to REALLY help Assange…. it would be Ron Paul (among an assorted cast of other fringe activists who endorse the traitorous deeds of Assange/Manning)

Paul even went as far as to call Manning a hero and….. patriotic.

What a guy that treason endorsing Ron Paul… what a guy. If you still support Ron Paul after all his nonsense over the years (like this as an example)… you are severely deficient in your system of values where right and wrong are considered. You are not a patriotic American citizen, but a lackey for a lunatic plain and simple.

They try to support their claims by saying Assange was trying to make us transparent and that it wasn‘t Manning’s fault, but that his commander should not have allowed him access to the info.

Paulbots live in a special world of unicorns and lollipops for breakfast, where there is no need for inteligence gathering and the power of the pure free market will keep you safe. One problem: it’s true. Paul did say Manning was a hero. No…Manning is a traitor, or will be if found guilty. This is no different than the Progressives calling Alinsky or any of their favorite people heros. No, they are an embarrasment to the nation.

Time2 may go overboard at times, but he is correct that Paul believes Manning and Assange did nothing wrong. As a former military officer Paul knows better, he knows that Manning’s actions are by definition treasonous.

By all means, innocent until proven guilty, but the facts that have been revealed don’t paint a good picture. And most of those facts come from Manning’s own words where he admitted to the crime.

No, quite the opposite. And you merely reveal yourself to be a simpleton who blindly follows your master Paul.

Paul is a great Congressman but too many put their faith in him, or any one individual. Look how many of the tools on here repeatedly say he is the only way. That is the epitome of a useful idiot.

Look up the definition under UCMJ for treason and find what the defense is for Manning’s admited actions? There is one, but I doubt you will find it.

Exactly what did Manning do that was honorable or revealing evil? Nothing. He placed lives in jeapordy. Had he released info that revealed service members wildly executing civilians for the fun of it or info about another crime he would be justified. He didn’t. He had a grudge and to get back at the military he released classified info.

This is how ignorant your argument is: nearly everyone realizes that the current WH realeasing classified info regarding the Bin Camelturd raid is a violation of OPSEC. Manning violated that same OPSEC and much of the info released included names and sources. Whats the difference? Both criminal, yet one agrees with you so you over look it because the ends justify the means.

Once again, you reveal your naievity. Even the Catholic church (argueably the most pasifist of Christian denominations) doesn’t say that all war is intrinsicly evil so stow the blessed are the peacemakers line.

Guess what, when those that purposesfully target civilians get caught they are prosecuted, trust me, I’ve met a few, had them in my handcuffs. Real soldiers HATE war and worse than war, real soldiers hate those that target those that can not defend themself or are not combatants. Churchill said “nobody pays for peace more than the soldier, for it is he that pays the ulitmate price.”

Thats not Manning released. What Manning released were diplomatic cables and other forms of
      inteligence. That is not whistleblowing.

I agree, with leaders fighting. You might be interested to know that the last president to lead troops into direct conflict was Washington. He PERSONALLY lead troops against an armed rebellion and KILLED Americans for not paying a tax.

I forgive you, you don‘t know me and I don’t know you, other than a screen name. That is the problem with most forums.

Personally, I see a huge problem with many, recently a majority, of the commenters on this and other sites and the belief in conspiracy theories. Nearly all my adult life I have worked full time or part time for the military as a soldier or civilian. I‘ve seen and held the info that people use to make conspiracy theory and it is so blatantly inacurate that it’s laughable, from the ammount of ammo certain agencies purchase to APC’s roaming the streets.
The vast majority of actual conspiracies are actually quite open, most from the far left. They say what they want to do to America and the world in private or in front of their followers but later denie it when pressed for answers.
As far as the Church from Rome, you will find that every branch of the Christian family tree has been bitten by the apostacy bug and has commited atrocity. Remember that it was good Babtist men that enslave blacks.
The big difference is that since Catholisim has a leader they have a target. They have also asked for forgiveness for their actions.

@SUPERMAN”S DAD..Have you heard of the playbook that Hilary and Obama both abscribe to Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals? A lie is the truth and the truth is a lie..Conspiracy theories are just that..conspiracy theories even if proven true? I investigate and keep investigating when I hear something contradictory.. Conspiracies are nothing new…the theory part is just added to make it appear false..But conspiracies have existed since the fall of Lucifer in heaven..As a matter of fact..Saul Alinsky’s book Rules for radicals was dedicated to Satan for one who dared go against God gained his own kingdom.. As long as there are evil men..there will always be conspiracies..I have awakened to them in the last few years..It ties all of the wars together for a common purpose..Men from what I believe to be from the Tribe of Dan..the serpent of the Bible..have been at the helm..working for the eventual ruling of the entire kingdom..What does the Bible say about that? We battle not against flesh and blood .but against principalities, powers, against the rulers of of this world..Don’t be in such haste to laugh things off until you have investigated in depth.Truth is much stranger than fiction..Peace.

ANIMALS. Just calling it (Ron Paul/Acolytes) the way I see him/them/you. If that offends you… tough.

Ron Paul zealots have no problem scouring the internet insulting Republicans/Conservatives/anyone who doesn‘t subscribe to Ron Paul’s mostly idiotic musings. Many of you hide behind what you think is debate, but in the long run you are insulting anyone who would support/vote someone “other” than Ron Paul or HIS pacifist/isolationist ideology with your supposed… debate.

Ron Paul IS NOT a great Congressman like SUPERMANSDAD stated. He is just another slick snake-oil salesman from the beltway who long ago needed to ride off into the sunset like many of the supposed “RINOS” ya’ll scream about.

Ron Paul is the biggest RINO within the Republican Party because he’s not a Republican at all (certainly NOT a Conservative)… he insults the GOP/Republicans/Conservatives at every turn just like his supporters on the internet who run continuous commercials on his behalf. Ron Paul is the acolyte of Murray Rothbard the founder of a fringe off-shoot strain of what used to be respectable Libertarian-Conservatives. And what we have in Ron Paul besides endo

As far as I‘m concened as a politician he’s contributed zip, zero and nada to this country as a whole except for some economic enlightenment. Many might agree with “some” of his economic views, but the rest of Ron Paul is an ideological scam based on extreme anti-war zealotry and Isolationism plain and simple.

Furthermore, I find it necessary to have men like this who will provide for the transparency that we as a free and sovereign people need in order to properly keep an eye on what our nation is really doing.

but there are laws that to prevent nations, nation states and other foreign nationals from espionage. Thats like saying you broke our laws but since your not a citizen you can’t be prosecuted. No, the law was still broken.

And Manning knew he was breaking the law, he has admited to it. His only defense may lay in that he did not difulge secrets to a nation state. Thats it.

Go back and re-read what is required to maintain your clearence, I know I still get an anual SAEDA brief and it’s routinely repeated to us.

If he did not put our troops in direct danger he certainly did so in the broader sense. When allies no longer trust us and informants are outed then the overall situational danger increases tremendously. Don’t be naive. Also consider the danger that he put our allies in on the front lines.

      @ Myptofvu

It all happened at around the same time, that is towards the end of 2010.

Mrs Clinton was far from the only person to be embarressed. The facts that were released were hardly news within the diplomatic community, but the publicity left some very red faces.

The two women in Sweden accused Mr Assange of “coercion”, which, in Sweden is regarded as a mild form of rape (if one can use such an expression). The women, through their lawyer, have so far refused to release any details of the offence as to do so would “give too much away to the accused man”.

This, anyone would agree, is a grave injustice to the accused, and leads to the inescapable conclusion that the charges are manufactured in order to get Mr Assange into Swedish custody. If the charges are baseless, as seems likely, Mr Assange would then be extradited to the US where some very p!ssed off people would be awaiting his arrival.

The pentagon cannot connect Wikileaks directly to any deaths of allied personnel, as you point out, but that leaves the “connecting of the dots” which has no doubt been done by unfriendly intelligence. The result of that is unlikely to be known.

I personally hope that Wikileaks is replaced by something similar, but more disciplined. The world definitely needs it.

Julian thought that he had a lot to gain but lost a lot by what he did. He caused a lot of problems around the world and he should pay for his misdeeds. Manning knew that he had violated the oath that he took, yet he took the chance. I don’t know if it was for personal gain or not but he was wrong and should be punished for what he did. Julian is a traitor to the world and Manning is a traitor to his country. Prosecute the both of them.

Bradley Manning is just another gay guy who has his panties in a bunch over some gay activist issue (how the army was treating him) and turned traitor as his way to ‘get even’. The guy should have been put before a firing squad by now, and instead has not even seen trial simply because he is gay and the PC attitude in the military – the same that shielded the Ft. hood terrorist – remains strong.

Whoopi Goldberg came up with the euphemism “rape rape”.

Rape rape is what we use to understand as rape back in the day. So today if it is rape & not “rape rape” then it is all just a misunderstanding & ‘No’ actually means “Yes Yes”, because Assange is an exemplar of Leftitude

No my whole point was that rape was taken seriously or not seriously depending on the political affiliation of who commits it.

I was referring to a Whoopi Goldberg explanation about rape.

If the women wanted him to sue a condom & he didn’t then it is still rape.

Some might disagree with that assessment but a liberal cannot. Feminists argue that if you are already shagging that you have to stop immediately. So if feminists are correct then what he did was rape.

This is not as simple as it might first appear.

Wikileaks was operating with the open co-operation of large, respected news organisations (the Guardian, for example). These organisations, after benefitting hugely, have now backed away because of the intense pressure brought to bear.

Wikileaks has done the unforgivable. It has embarressed politicians the world over. It is not so much the classified secrets that were leaked by other people, such as Bradley Manning, that caused the problem but the embarressing titbits regarding blunt diplomatic opinions of individuals.

However, the most sustained attacks on wikileaks has come from international financial institutions. Their response has been savage and they are using their political clout, as well as private investigative firms, to bring down Wikileaks. They have also used their financial sway to choke off Wikileaks’ income stream. All this is because Wikileaks has exposed, or threatened to expose, banking misdeeds.

An email, ironically leaked, reads: “CEO Aaron Barr [HBGary (security specialists)] thought he‘d uncovered the hackers’ identities and like rats, they’d scurry for cover. If he could nail them, he could cover up the crimes H&W, HBGary, and BoA planned, bring down WikiLeaks, decapitate Anonymous, and place his opponents in prison while collecting a cool fee. He thought he was 88% right; he was 88% wrong.” Mr Barr has recently resigned.

      cont.

On the other hand, Wikileaks has demonstrated gross irresponsibility in his handling of potentially life-threatening information. Even Mr Assange has allowed that Wikileaks may end up with “blood on its hands”.

This is unforgivable, and in doing so Wikileaks has used up most of its capital of goodwill. While most realise that the charges against Mr Assange are either trumped up, or conveniently exaggerated, it is hard to be sympathetic.

While he is right that whistleblowers may be further cowed when he is taken down, he has rather brought this apon himself. He had a tremendous opportunity to do a great deal of good in the world by exposing corruption and providing whistleblowers with a safe haven, and he has squandered it.

It is a great pity that Mr Assange did not equip himself with trained journalists who understand the responsibilities of their profession.

I agree with your take on the whole thing Nzkiwi. It is unfortunate that WikiLeaks did decide to publish items that could get our tropes killed instead of reading through them and taking out what needed to be taken out. But in these times with the size and over reach of government and some of these super corporations, which both have control over the media, we need a site like WikiLeaks.
