Arizona Handgun Sales Skyrocket Following Giffords Shooting

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — The FBI says background checks for handgun sales jumped in Arizona following the shootings in Tucson.

There were 263 background checks in Arizona on Monday, up from 164 for the same day a year ago.

The bureau’s figures show big increases in some other states as well. For example, in Ohio handgun background checks went up from 240 on Jan. 10, 2010, to 395 on Monday.

At the same time, the number of background checks declined in some states. In Tennessee, they went down from 448 a year ago to 165 on Monday.

In releasing a state-by-state list, the FBI cautioned that the number of checks initiated through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System don’t reflect the number of handguns sold.

Just two days after a Glock-weilding gunman killed six at a Tucson shopping center, Greg Wolff, the owner of two Arizona gun shops reported the significant increase in business to Bloomberg.

“We’re at double our volume over what we usually do,” Wolff said Monday.

Gun dealers attribute rising sales to the growing debate over new state and federal gun restrictions in the time after the shooting, claiming individuals fear they won’t have as easy access to firearms in the future.

“When something like this happens people get worried that the government is going to ban stuff,” Wolff told Bloomberg.

One-day sales of handguns in Arizona jumped 60 percent to 263 on Jan. 10 compared with 164 the corresponding Monday a year ago, the second-biggest increase of any state in the country…

Handgun sales rose 65 percent to 395 in Ohio; 16 percent to 672 in California; 38 percent to 348 in Illinois; and 33 percent to 206 in New York, the FBI data show. Sales increased nationally about 5 percent, to 7,906 guns.

Guns are tools Americans have used to keep foxes out of the hen house and vermin out of there homes. Still holds true today. Considering how many Americans own guns, we aren’t doin to bad stastically in way of crime and crim has been going down in the US over the past three decades. All those crack babys that got aborted beginning in 1970 correlated to a significant drop in crime right on 1990 when those babys would have turned 20.

It’s a different world out here in the country, and you are so right…do not want to live in the cluster f…, known as city life. I’ve farmed as a single woman and with my daughter, now 18 for nearly 28 years. Just bought a S & W bodyguard for myself and cc due to increase in thefts and a break in just a few miles up the road. It would take the police 10-15 min to answer a call out here, even under the best of conditions. Still keep a pump action shot gun next to the bed…the sound of that lock and load is a universal language in the dark. However, I’ve felt like that young man in AZ who stepped forward to help with his cc weapon, that I just need to have something on me that’s quick and ready. I just keep seeing those school board members in Florida, sitting there like ducks in the arcade waiting for the shooter to kill them. I had a Great Aunt that used to purse my Uncle like that when he drank too much…she would have taken that shooter out with one swipe! No city life for me.

I wish we could educate the public to the point where they didn’t fear guns, I hate concealed carry laws, I would much rather people walk around with them on their sides. As someone who used to own a bar, I had a ton of trouble with girls walking in with guns in their purses getting drunk and pulling out a gun. People with them on their sides were asked to put them in their cars or not get in. If this guy had had his gun on his side he wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near her, and everyone would have known to keep away from him. If the cops found one hidden on someone/hidden in their cars, they could arrest them. I can‘t think of any legitimate reason to hide the fact you are carrying a gun if you aren’t a cop.

A good reason? Because as a law abiding citizen sometimes the ONLY advantage I have over a criminal is his not knowing I’m armed. Plenty of times places get robbed and the robbers start shooting those they consider the biggest threat first. I’d rather NOT be labeled the biggest threat till I know they are there and can take cover/threat asses/and engage or retreat if needed.

Arizona – Legal has parameters. A pistol carried in the open is legal. CC – concealed carry is legal (AZ. Background check at pistol purchase point is required – FBI is the source of this check – data base electronically interconnected with other states). 2010 AZ SB1108 law allows CC for any citizen. AZ law ‘Immigration’ is a less stringent version of the Federal Law.

Arizonian’s, in particular the southern half, are under attack threat by an armed foreign force. The Federal government has done little to contain this invasion by organized armed groups (which defines army). The Fed’s have posted a number of bill boards warning AZ citizens do not travel beyond this point. There are avenues – alleys of travel that are used by organized smugglers-drug cartel managers that are very dangerous to a citizen. These known alleys of travel reach 150 miles north of the border. Federal Border Patrol agents work daily 150 miles north of the border. Arizona is under invasion and the confusion and fear is part of the recent increase in pistol purchasing. Self Defense?

The same may have happened with some Mexican border citizens in the immediate vicinity of these alley entry points in obtaining illegal, under Mexican law, pistols for in-home self defense. Some of these pistols come illegally from the United States via brotherhood gangs.

The possession and use of a pistol is cultural. Fear is also cultural.

      International Gun Ban Treaty?
      December 5, 2009

Q: Has Obama found a “legal way around the Second Amendment”?

A: The administration’s agreement to talk about writing a United Nations treaty to regulate arms exports and imports is a far cry from banning possession of firearms, which Obama says he doesn’t want to do and the Supreme Court has said can’t be done anyway.

Subject: Obama Takes First Step in Banning All Firearms On Wednesday Obama Took the First Major Step in a Plan to Ban All Firearms in the United States

⬐ Click to expand/collapse the full text ⬏

On Wednesday the Obama administration took its first major step in a plan to ban all firearms in the United States . The Obama administration intends to force gun control and a complete ban on all weapons for US citizens through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. By signing international treaties on gun control, the Obama administration can use the US State Department to bypass the normal legislative process in Congress. Once the US Government signs these international treaties, all US citizens will be subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments. These are laws that have been developed and promoted by organizations such as the United Nations and individuals such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. The laws are designed and intended to lead to the complete ban and confiscation of all firearms.

The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened. Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws. Does that mean Obama is telling the truth? What it means is that there will be no publicized gun control debates in the media or votes in Congress. We will wake up one morning and find that the United States has signed a treaty that prohibits firearm and ammunition manufacturers from selling to the public. We will wake up another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that prohibits any transfer of firearm ownership. And then, we will wake up yet another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that requires US citizens to deliver any firearm they own to the local government collection and destruction center or face imprisonment.

This is not a joke nor a false warning. As sure as government health care will be forced on us by the Obama administration through whatever means necessary, so will gun control.

      FULL ANSWER

We’ve received many queries about this chain e-mail, which refers to a proposed United Nations treaty to regulate the global trade of conventional weapons.

Much of what this e-mail claims is simply false. A “complete ban on all weapons for US citizens” isn’t possible under our Constitution, according to the Supreme Court, which held just last year that:

District of Columbia v. Heller, 26 June 2008: (T)he enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table. These include the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home.

Furthermore, if an arms trade treaty ever materializes, the administration won’t be able to “bypass” Congress, as the e-mail maintains. All international treaties require the approval of two-thirds of the Senate before they are considered ratified and in effect.

In addition, the idea that a treaty necessarily would make U.S. citizens “subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments,” as the e-mail claims, is wrong. Treaties don’t subject one nations’ citizens to the laws of other nations. They do commit governments to whatever actions a treaty specifies, such as ceasing to test nuclear weapons, in the case of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (a treaty signed by the U.S., but never ratified by Congress).

As for this particular treaty: First of all, it doesn’t yet exist. What is true is that the Obama administration, reversing the line taken by the Bush White House, has voted to support a process that could, in 2012 at the earliest, result in a treaty.

The idea of achieving an international agreement on trade in conventional arms has long been kicking around, and in 2006 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution titled “Toward an arms trade treaty.” The measure instructed the UN secretary-general to get the views of all member states on “the feasibility, scope and draft parameters for a comprehensive, legally binding instrument establishing common international standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional arms.“ A panel of ”governmental experts” was tasked with providing advice as well. The resolution was approved 153-1, the only dissenter being the U.S.

Then in 2008, the General Assembly passed another resolution, this one calling for further efforts toward an arms trade treaty (ATT) through a new open-ended working group. Again, the U.S. provided the only vote against the measure.

Since President Obama took office, though, the U.S. has been more receptive to the notion. In mid-October, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement saying: “The United States is committed to actively pursuing a strong and robust treaty that contains the highest possible, legally binding standards for the international transfer of conventional weapons.” And on Oct. 28, the General Assembly voted 153-1 to move forward in preparation for a United Nations conference on the arms trade treaty in 2012 that could yield a formal document. This time, Zimbabwe was the lone naysayer (19 nations abstained).

Some critics of the concept of an arms trade treaty say they believe, like the author of the e-mail above, that it’s a back-door avenue to gun control. In fact, suspicions that the UN wants to seize Americans’ guns have been circulating since the mid-1990s. Those fears dovetail with trepidations that some have about Obama on this issue. John Bolton, former ambassador to the UN under the George W. Bush administration, recently told the NRANews:

or if your just interested in scaring the crap out of someone get a Smith and Wesson Magnum 500 Bone Collector. I doubt there is really any way to conceal and carry this gun as it the biggest revolver I’ve ever seen in person. It’s commonly used to hunt big game

If you seriously looking for a concealed carry personal defense gun I heard good things about the Smith and Wesson Judge series of revolvers.

Good! Look at the Swiss… very low death rate by guns because most own them. Then look at DC, almost a total ban, and a very high death rate. People are less likely to shoot if they think the fire will be returned.

All this is not going to affect those that are mentally ill, such as the AZ shooter, who would kill no matter what the laws were.

Yea better get that money out for a rainy day and buy one if you have been on the fence. This attempted assassination is what radicals have been hoping for to reign weapon restrictions. Stock up on ammo too b/c some bleeding heart liberal will screw you on that front to as to what kind and how much you can buy like CA.

Dont you know guns kill! Not the lunatics using them no, no guns kill! I hope they also decide to ban cigarettes, alcohol, CARS, trucks, knives, belts, rope, shoestrings, tools…. need I go on. AZ hold your ground dont let this sad event take hold of common sense and restrict 2nd Amend rights.

Here in the tyrannical CA we are already restricted to no end with coming ammo registration Feb 1 thanks to progressive RINO Schwarzenegger! We can open carry just cant be a loaded gun!

Avoid the background checks if you can. The ratifiers of the Bill of Rights, at the time of the establishing of the Constitution, amended the Constitution with the Second Amendment to prevent government abuse.

Forced registration of firearms defeats the purpose of the Second Amendment, and is therefore unConstitutional.

Dustyluv, I had a similar event take place when I lived in S.C. but my situation involved two people. It was a little after 2:00 am and very dark outside, so I was going by the sound of their voices. I heard enough to tell me they were there for bad intentions so I shot in their general direction not really wanting to hit anyone but managed to graze one of them. The following morning I had a Sheriffs deputy come out to the house and made a report. That’s when we found a light blood trail and followed down the dirt road to where they had parked their vehicle. That was the last time we ever had any problems living where we did.

It’s simple, people buy guns when something like this happens, because they fear both the criminals and the government, so it comes down to a sense of personal responsibility to protect ones self self and our families, because everyone knows the government isn’t going to do it. Lock and load America, because the Communists want unarmed sheep that are easier to lead to slaughter. I, like most people, really hope that oneday we can live in a peaceful society where we can trust our neighbors and our elected officials, but til then, I will put my trust in Smith & Wesson.

SGT. CRUST, That is TERRIBLE advice. You fire a shotgun in your home, especially the rounds you are recommending and you will kill or injure everyone else the. For home defence, buy a pistol (I recommend H&K .40 USP) and Glaser rounds. They are like encased shotgun rounds that slow very fast upun first impact. Hit your invader, you drop him. Miss? Hit a wall and the round dies.
Also a very defensable round in court if you have to shoot it in public. .357 regular round? Not so much.

@Honor, that is a matter of opinion sir. I’ve shot that weapon (pump) with those rounds and it is a tight enough pack, doesn’t go everwhere, but spread enough to hit a moving target very well, I have to say we have to agree to disagree. Most folks who would break into your home, after hearing the action of the pump cranking, clickety, clack, would skiddadle just by that sound, no shots fired. So there is always a potential for collatoral damage, even with a richocette of a pistol, and a shotgun does do damage, but a person in the hallway can’t duck these pellets, a sure hit!

@Honor, so I guess you must be the TOP expert, and I’ve talked to many, done much research and here is the consensus:

The Best Guns for Home Defense
      Pump Action Shotgun

      Mossberg 500 – 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun

The general consensus in the firearms community is that the pump action shotgun is the top choice for home defense. They’re relatively easy to use and nearly impossible to break. More importantly, the sound of chambering a hot round into a pump action 12 gauge is sure to soil the britches of even the most hardened criminal.

The Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 are extremely popular choices in this category. Both are proven to be extremely reliable for a reasonable price, beginning at around $200.

      this is from: http://artofmanliness.com/2009/07/23/the-best-guns-for-home-defense/

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.”

@ Tifosa – your selective stats may be true, but how about looking into it further. Gun ownership per capita: Arizona – 39th. Firearm related deaths are higher in low population states, mainly because any incidence of gun death (murder, suicide, or hunting accident) effect the stats more than states with a large population.

How about the District of Columbia- the state with the most strict gun ownership laws, being #1 in gun deaths per capita. it’s not tied to the gun laws, its a result of skewed numbers – DC has a low population compared to other states.

Another misleading fact in these statistics – in any given year, around 50% of gun deaths in the USA are suicides, maybe 10% of deaths are accidental, leaving around 40% of the total statistic to be the actual number of violent gun deaths.

You are better served by looking at murder rates, not firearm deaths. Wyoming, which is near the top in both gun ownership and gun deaths as a whole, ranks 49th in murder rate(low population, high incidence of accidental deaths with hunting weapons). If you look up murder numbers by state, you will see that higher population states have far more murders than lower population states, obviously, but come in lower on the per capita death statistics. In fact, most states with high gun ownership per capita have very low total murder rates.

Take for example a large state, Califronia. 41st in overall gun ownership per capita. 30th in firearm deaths per capita. Yet leads the nation in murders and manslaughter with more than 14% of the TOTAL violent gun deaths in the entire nation. 6 times the murder rate of Arizona.
