Just Abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Already

The following is a commentary piece by TheBlaze’s national security expert Buck Sexton.

Congressional investigators released a report today highlighting the culpability of five Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) officials in the Operation Fast and Furious debacle.

Should We Abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms?

The report offered few new revelations and seemed pretty much useless — much like the ATF itself.

About the only value of the 211-page document released today is that it clearly spells out the reasons why the ATF’s days should be numbered, revealing a level of gross incompetence, neglect of oversight, and bureaucratic ineptitude that should outrage us all. The two planned follow-on Congressional reports will deal more directly with the Department of Justice’s role and the allegations of a cover-up that continue to plague Attorney General Eric Holder.

(RELATED:  Will This New Fast and Furious Report Force Holder to Resign? (Take Our Poll))

This first report’s conclusion about the ATF officials involved is straightforward: ATF devised an operation to track guns that they never had any means of actually tracking, nobody in the chain of command stopped this from happening, and nobody has been held accountable in any meaningful way since the scandal erupted.

The operation itself led to horrific outcomes including a murdered U.S. Border Patrol Agent, hundreds of dead Mexican civilians, and thousands of guns in the hands of Mexican drug cartel assassins. This has been well-documented on the Blaze, and we will continue to cover the issue closely.

But in looking at the ATF’s role in this specific operation and its obvious failings as shown in the Congressional report, a broader question arises.

Why shouldn’t we just abolish the ATF?

There seem to be many arguments in favor of this proposition, and very few against it.

In mere concept, the ATF is bothersome. Any organization devoted to criminal prosecutions based on the regulation of otherwise legal substances should make us uneasy. People tend to forget this now, but the ATF’s tentacles extend far and wide because of the unrestrained statist monster that is the interstate Commerce Clause in the post Wickard vs. Filburn era.

This has meant that that the federal government can regulate alcohol, tobacco, and firearms as much as it wants — well beyond the original intent of the Constitution — and it already has its enforcers in place in the form of ATF agents.

Add to this the fact that the ATF’s proclivity for overreaching enforcement goes back as far as the organization itself. For those of us who prefer limited government and the absolute minimum of bureaucratic intrusion into our lives, the ATF’s history is one long cautionary tale. It has bounced around under the umbrella of larger federal agencies, including the IRS and the Treasury department (where it collected taxes on liquor) and helped enforce Prohibition.  Once you add Ruby Ridge, Waco, and the Fast and Furious catastrophes onto the heap, you have a pretty compelling case for ATF dissolution.

And let’s not forget the cost issue. These days most Americans seem to agree that budgets matter. The 5,000 employees and billion dollar price tag of the ATF is small by behemoth government agency standards, but federal cuts have to start somewhere, and setting a precedent that unnecessary agencies can in fact be eliminated could have ripple effects across the government.

As for the talented, hardworking, patriotic agents who no doubt joined the ATF in the spirit of real public service, their skills are certainly transferable to local and state law enforcement, if not another federal agency. There are plenty of cities and towns who could use seasoned law enforcement officers, and wouldn’t have them focusing efforts on bootleggers, cigarette smugglers, and harassing gun show collectors.

Tonight we will start off our discussion on “Real News” with this issue at 6PM tonight, led by Andrew Wilkow. Hopefully Blaze readers and GBTV viewers will light up the board with comments so we can get to the heart of this issue.

Ron Paul would have let Iran develop a nuclear weapon and the means to deliver it. That’s not hear say or conjecture, that’s fact, he said so himself. That’s the best reason we do not want him. He’s no longer an option. You people are as bad with this Paul issue as Obama is with blaming Bush. It’s done, move on.

Yes, it’s done. The country is finished. You can thank the RNC and the DNC.
And to be more accurate what RP said was that letting Iran go was better than a thermonuclear exchange with China.

I wonder if I could got to an ATF auction and buy that .50cal rifle. I would give it a nice, safe home where no drug cartel member (or BATF stooge) could get to it. It would be a win-win. I get a rifle I have wanted for some time at a reduced rate, the government makes some money in the sale (to pay back the taxpayers for what they have stolen from us), and our border is a bit safer. Who could possibly have a problem with such a logical idea?

      @historyguy48

It is funny to me that your name is historyguy and yet you obviously haven’t read anything about the colonization of the middle east for the past century. Ever since the fall of the Turks; other nations have been in their “sovereign” lands. Lands considered religious for them.
You might also want to read up on Eisenhower staging a military coup through the CIA to topple Mosaddeq in Iran. We then provided the “pro-western” Shah with aircraft, tanks, and weapons. All was well and good until OPEC (1973-1974) quadrupled oil prices during an already weak U.S. economy. Bad news all around. Then enters Ayatollah Ruhullah Khomeini.
Iran until this point had been the most stable of countries in the middle east while being colonized.
Khomeini had other plans for radical change in the middle east. Khomeini took power in Iran and was P’d off. (Same as Egypt now; Fake pro-western ruler being overthrown).

I didn’t enjoy reading this stuff but the only way to truly understand why they hate us is to read the history. (I WASN’T EVEN ALIVE FOR THIS STUFF)
Iran also wanted to come to the table with both Bush and Clinton about the nukes but they refused the terms. Khatami wished for both admins to recognize the Islamic Republic and respect it’s sovereignty.
We have been fiddling over there for the past century and it is about to come to an end. Either by WW3 or our country going completely broke. Thanks 48!

NEVER allow the First and Second Amendments to be attacked or altered in any way.

To those who criticised Ice T (and I’m thinking of Mr Limbaugh especially) for saying that the 2nd Amendment was a defence against tyranny and a defence against the police, you should probably watch that video, too.

The $500.00 stores and $800.00 toiltes ned context.

They are highly specialized devices worth every penny of their great costs. The toilet for example, is nearly silent and designed for use on our various nuclear submarines, where plumbing noises would othewise be detected.

Other, seemingly silly things, like temp stable chapstick and stable aspirin, were first mocked and then ditched by VP Gore and President Clinton. VP Gore even went on the Letterman show and moke such DOD approved items. Clearly VP Gore had never humped a ruck when he was in the Army, because he would have known that off the shelf aspirin turns into fine powder after just a few miles bumping about in a ruck. Off the shelf chapstick turns into a stain on your field pants in a matter of hours. “MilSpec” equipment existed for a reason – reasons progressives more interested in scoring points in Hollywood than they are in equiping fighting men, seem to favor.

And in that spirit why not just disolve the ATF and take those people and transfer them over to border & imigration.

      @JUSTANOTHEROPINION

It is never done. It is never over. It is not just about Ron Paul. It is not just about the Middle East.
Are you giving up on the Constitution that easily? Romney laughed at the Constitution.
Are you prepared for WW3? How else will we stop Iran? Where were the WMD’s in Iraq? We just “rebuilt” their nation remember?

Get rid of them and a few other unconstitutional agencies. Finding jobs for the good agents should not be hard. We could use more help on the border or in Chicago, where anti gun laws have made it a haven for real criminals (inclusive of politics). Seems there is a lot of work out there… Don’t need the ATF.

Most of the currant government agencies should be abolished. Absolutely disgusting, the amount of money wasted everyday. Just think of the money that would free up.

Absolutely! Get rid of it! It’s another of those Roosevelt “New Deal” government agencies that has gone rogue and is now the New Gestapo. Let the States handle their own affairs and get these jack-booted thugs out of our lives!

I agree. Abolish this lying jack booted agency. They do nothing but target and harass makers and sellers of legitimate and legal products.

People can regulate themselves. No one is going to sell smokes to a 5 year old or sell a gangbanger a gun. It is already illegal to do so. Businesses that engage in activities that run counter to the norms of society don’t last very long.

We don’t need this heavy handed criminal agency planting evidence, commiting perjury against gun owners and engaging in gun running. With law enforcement like that, who needs criminals?

I’m in support of shutting down any useless and wasteful government run agency. Lets shut down stupid agencies that are just redundancies. Homeland Security is one of them… So what do they do that the FBI and local law enforcement don’t do?

It should be a convenience store.
