ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A court has charged 14 suspected al-Qaida militants for allegedly planning to attack the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital.

The charges — which were filed by an Ankara court late Friday — come as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visits Turkey’s cultural capital of Istanbul for a meeting on religious tolerance.

The 14 suspects were captured just before Clinton’s arrival. A 15th suspect was released, though may later also face trial.

Turkish media have speculated that homegrown radical Islamist militants affiliated with al-Qaida are preparing to avenge the May 2 killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan by U.S. forces.

Al-Qaida’s austere and violent interpretation of Islam receives little public backing in Turkey, a predominantly Muslim but officially secular country. However, al-Qaida and several other radical Islamic groups have been active in Turkey before.

The state-run Anatolia news agency reported Saturday that one of the suspects had carried out surveillance around the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and some other foreign missions, including taking photos. Police have seized 1,500 pounds (700 kilograms) of chemicals along with bomb-making instructions, assault rifles, ammunition and maps of Ankara, it said.

Police captured the suspects after tracking one of them for six months, according to Anatolia. The police captured the suspect less than a week ago on a street in Sincan, a town on the outskirts of the capital where he is believed to have received weapons training. The others were rounded up on Tuesday.

In June, police arrested 10 suspected al-Qaida militants in the southern Turkish city of Adana, which is home to the Incirlik Air Base used by the United States to transfer noncombat supplies to Iraq and Afghanistan. Authorities have said Muslim militants tied to al-Qaida planned to attack Incirlik in the past but were deterred by high security.

Turkish authorities have said dozens of Turkish militants have received training in Afghanistan.

In 2008, an attack blamed on al-Qaida-affiliated militants outside the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul left three assailants and three policemen dead.

In 2003, homegrown Islamic militants tied to the al-Qaida attacked the British Consulate, a British bank and two synagogues in Istanbul, killing 58 people.

      She already announced she will not serve another ‘term’ as Secretary of State.

      Does ANYBODY ELSE see her lining up to replace obama when the country REJECTS him outright next year? If his numbers stay this low, the DNC may not even back him… I wouldn’t! Not when they have a ‘spare’ in Hillary waiting in the wings.

      I read an article way back that only one company makes the electronic voting machines now, and they’re easily rigged. I don’t think he plans on there being a fair and balanced election. Remember, if you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you weren’t a racist, you‘d better vote for someone else in 2012 to prove you aren’t stupid.

      I’m just angry at the shoddy journalism here. Blaze made a real-story of problems in Turkey into a non-story with a stupid picture.
      I’m no supporter of Hillary, but Blaze should at least represent the guy on the other side of the photo correctly.

    Seriously, God bless Turkey – whatever their motives were to help us, at least our embassy was protected and lives saved.

    Orthodox Christians are being heavily persecuted, and they show this picture to relate a story about Radical Islam. Make the connection, amature journalists! This is rediculous Blaze. If the Orthodox Church has something to do with this story, then report on it. Don’t just throw some random picture out there to mislead it just because there is a guy with a black robe.

    This pic is misleading journalism !!! – It is the Eastern tradition of greeting, to kiss first on one cheek and then on opposite. This pic caught Hillary & Archbishop Demetrious in the passing from one cheek to the other to make it look like they were kissing in a Western tradition. Come on, Blaze. You can do better (and I am a staunch supporter of The Blaze).

      @Abbey, what the heck are you talking about? So, blaze writes about a topic in Turkey, therefore they should mention Mormons?
      The topic is about terror attacks in Turkey. They are showing the US Archbishop with no mention of why in the story other than an unrelated caption. In my journalism class, this would be a big Fail.
      As you can see, idiots on this page are already thinking the guy is a Muslim kissing Hillary. See the ignorance here? This rediculous article fails to connect the dots of persecution in the Middle East which is directly related to the topic in the first place.

      Glenn always had facts about his statements and he always prefaced them that they were his outlook on possibilities. Like a lawyer with a Hypothetical and his proof to back up the position. That does not mean that he claims that it will actually happen the way he posited the position, but more times than not he was really close to being spot on.

      Just look at the Islamic “Spring”, from Tunisia, Egypt and now EU his “Theory” of Turmoil is seemingly coming true, how is that reason to get him fired. He left of his own free will, but you can believe what you want since the brain cells God gave the ant have not kicked in yet.

      You obviously do not watch Glenn Beck at all. To say he is a conspiracy theorists with no proof at all is so wrong and uninformed I do not know where to begin. I will just say that Beck usually has two blackboards on his show where he usually lists ALL of his sources unless by oversight. No matter what you say about Glenn Beck you cannot say he is unprepared and that he makes unsubstantiated claims. He and his staff do more research and fact checking than any other political talk show on the air. To say otherwise is admitting that you do not watch the show and get your information from democrat talking points of the day. As Glenn Beck says, if you do not believe him do the research yourself and see what you come up with. I do not know what it is with you liberals and your hate….You hate everyone that has a different opinion than you. You hate Glenn Beck, you hate Sarah Palin…(I know why you hate her….You fear her) You hate the Tea Party….(Only because they have different political views) and there are many others. You do not just consider them your opponents for upcoming elections but you actually HATE these people.       Coincidences are incredibly rare indeed when it comes to matters of political activity; such as in this case…while some will say this is just a call for Hillary to run in ‘12, which I feel she will do anyhow, it also appears from my perspective that the government of Turkey ‘caught’ the attempt to garner one or more favors and support in their actions from the administration.

      Sources in the middle east have been saying of the growing tension on the Turkey – Syrian border as Assang cracks down on refugees, and both nations have troops deployed ready and loaded as well.

      So tie this in with Hillary‘s comment of ’regime change’ in Syria the other day after the embassy of ours was attacked; and now we have just cause to wonder what is being discussed in the locked rooms of power there.

      Something is going to give shortly in Syria.
