Just How Rich Is Mitt Romney in Comparison to Past Presidents

We all know he is rich, but just how rich is Mitt Romney?
Romney’s wealth has come under the microscope following the release of his tax returns last Tuesday, which revealed that the former Massachusetts governor earned $21.7 million in 2010.
According to the Associated Press, you would be in Romney territory if you added up the wealth of the last eight presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, then doubled that number. If Romney were to be elected he would be among the richest presidents in American history— probably in the top four.
The list of the wealthiest President’s has long been topped by George Washington, who during his life owned nearly 60,000 acres and more than 300 slaves. Research by 24/7 Wall St., a news and analysis website, estimated Washington’s wealth at the equivalent of $525 million in 2010 dollars.

The AP notes that after that, it gets complicated, depending on how you rate Thomas Jefferson’s plantation, Herbert Hoover’s millions from mining or John F. Kennedy’s share of the vast family fortune, as well as the finer points of factors like inflation adjustment. AP reports on Romney’s wealth:
“The former Massachusetts governor has disclosed only the broad outlines of his wealth, putting it somewhere from $190 million to $250 million. That easily could make him 50 times richer than Obama, who falls in the still-impressive-to-most-of-us range of $2.2 million to $7.5 million.
[...]
After all, even in the rarefied world of the top 1 percent, there’s a big difference between life at the top and at the bottom.
A household needs to bring in roughly $400,000 per year to make the cut. Romney and his wife, Ann, have been making 50 times that – more than $20 million a year. In 2009, only 8,274 federal tax filers had income above $10 million. Romney is solidly within that elite 0.006 percent of all U.S. taxpayers.”
But should one’s personal wealth be a determent for their ability to lead the country?
As the economy has floundered throughout the Obama presidency and a populist anger has risen against the “one percent,” questions have been raised about the extreme wealth of the former Massachusetts governor and current Republican presidential candidate.
During Thursday’s CNN debate, Romney unapologetically defended his career and success in the free enterprise system, asking Republicans to see his accomplishments not as a detriment but as an asset to help America:

Looking at other posts you’ve made, its clear as you‘ve stated above that you think it’s the economy. Listen to me here…GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM! Posted on January 28, 2012 at 4:24pmI have zero problem with Romney’s wealth. What I do care about is the fact he wants more spending, no cuts, keep the fed, more war, less freedom.

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 11:52am@Babeuf – quoting Salon.com now to prove your point. Why don’t you just quote Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann. I guess all the progressives stick together. Keep up your support for Newt.

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 4:06pmI am not a Romney supporter. But, it’s not as if he made his money off of bootlegging alcohol or anything illegal. If you don‘t have as much money as you’d like get off your ass and either work harder or smarter or both. If it means that much to you. And stop the wallet envy. Base your thoughts and determine your support upon the candidate’s policies. Not their checkbooks. PERIOD!

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 4:31pmHe’s only out of touch to you because you gave up and now want someone to drag you to the top of the hill??? Envying another’s wealth is a SIN, work harder or find a line of work that can make you money like Romney and you to could be as rich as him. Just look at Georgy Schwartz (Soros) he stole peoples lives in Hungary in 1930′s Nazi Occupation and made money doing it. He then went to school in London and then has manipulated the money markets to his advantage to gain his wealth. He has also started revolutions in those same countries so that his outcome is secured along with his wealth.
He is listed as one financier that killed the economy of Mexico so that they now have to go North to make a living wage. Yet he cries like a baby in the US for a living wage. He is angling the US Economy to fail and he will mop up the profits for such a move.
Because the US is an impediment to his world financial domination he has to “CREATE” a Global financial crisis to suck all the life out of the “Free Market”. It will be the beginning of another World War and who will keep him from doing it?

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 5:20pmI’m not envious of his money…I just question if knows the price of an entry level new car…which is about $17,000 dollars and the price of a used car with 100,000 miles is around 8 to 11 grand…I question if he knows how hard it is to find an affordable place to live, whether it’s buying or renting…I question if he knows how much the average person pays for food each month…I question if he knows how much the average person pays for gas each month…I question if he knows how much the average person pays for utilities each month…My biggest question is.Would he go after someone that would make and sell a new car for $8,000 because it would cause a need for another auto bailout for Government Motors…Or if he would allow entry level condo’s to be sold at $12,000 because it would bring down housing prices…notice I didn’t say rent a condo…God‘s people don’t rent, they own…A $8,000 dollar new car made in America is easily possible and $12,000 dollar condo is also easily possible…But only when Government moves out of the way…Does Romney know what the Average Ameican can Afford??? I seriously doubt it…Do any of these canidates know what the Average American can Afford???..Another trillion dollar war in Iran???…They must think we are all loaded with freakin money

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 8:32pmLet’s talk about Romney…Save Gandi and Soros for another day…Romney supported bail-outs for people that went belly-up because they were not making affordable products…The economy is still stagnant because foreclosed homes have not been auctioned off in order to set free-market prices… People like Romney will keep bailing out the auto companies, not letting the free-market set the price…They’ll be another cash for clunkers, rasing the price of used cars and keeping new cars at the same insanely high prices…Romney is a crony-capitalist…and I’ll bet my soul that he beleives $17,000 dollars is a reasonable price for an entry level car…I’ll bet my soul he beleives $250,000 dollars is a good deal on a home…I’ll bet my soul he is out-of-touch with America’s economic reality…I’m a nineth grade drop-out with psycho effective disorder, and I would make a better president than pro-bailout,war-mongers that will not cut one cent of spending…All any of the canidates want to do is play tinker-tots with tax rates and bail-out there buddies

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 1:13amIf you truly believe in the existence of a soul, then you would not be so eager to bet it on something so frivolous. Your soul is a gift from GOD, it was bought with a price, and it is not yours to fritter away a political bet.
However, I agree with your basic premise. Most people who are born into wealth have no idea what it means to live paycheck-to-paycheck. They assume that if prices (or taxes) go up you will simply cut back or the number of latte’s or Big Macs you suck down each week, or ask your boss for a couple extra hours to make up the difference. They don’t realize that just a few hundred dollars can break the people at the bottom…

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 2:14amI know more about the soul and about the price of redemption more than anyone I know…It has more to do with wanting to live forever than actually getting the means to live forever…When a person breaks their soul and does not want to live forever only then will they be able to understand the true meaning of Christs purpose…Eternal life for someone that cannot cope with the guilt of their sins would not be very pleasant…the sinner was already predestined to sin…just as Christ was predestined to redeem the sinner…Mankind ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil…and was then sent to discover what is good and what is evil…a very muddy road God sent man on to know good and to know evil…God knowing how muddy the road is he sent a redeemer to cleanse the mud…I AM the Last High Priest…ask God for my credentials…Get to know me by watching The Big Bang Theory

Report Post »Then maybe YOU should run for President, since you feel yourself more qualified than Romney. You have that right. But, one question . . . do you actually know what a crony capitalist is? And if so, what evidence do you have that Romney is one? I’m very curious.

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 12:34pmRomney was pro-bailout…That is the Government picking winners and losers, not letting the free market decide on pricing and products…There will be another auto bailout, simple because people can’t afford $17,000 dollars for an entry level car…And I have thought of running for Governor in my state of West Virginia…One thing I would do is insure my state that no West Virginian could be detained indefinetly without trial…I would set up a special ops devision of the W.V. National Guard to rescue any state citizen that was being held unconstitutionaly
