‘Just Shut Up You Blowhard!’: Bob Beckel Slams Allen West Over His Stance on Gov’t Entitlements

Naturally, Fox News’ Bob Beckel, a self-described liberal, generally doesn’t agree with his more conservative compatriots on “The Five.” On Tuesday evening, this fact was demonstrated during the panel’s debate over government assistance and whether the American people have become too dependent upon it.
Beckel, of course, didn’t side with his co-hosts and when they played a clip of Republican Rep. Allen West (Florida) addressing these very issues, he made his disagreement more than known.
In the clip, West called Social Security “modern 21st-century slavery,“ a contention that led Beckel to call him a ”blowhard“ and to tell the famed conservative congressman to ”shut up.”
“Just shut up you blowhard,” he said. “That is one of the most obscene comments — even for you, that’s an obscene comment, West.”
“Why do you say something like that? These people went on disability because they were hurt. What about you? You shoot your mouth off — that hurts a lot of people,” Beckel continued.
Of course, the angst didn’t end there. Beckel went on to challenge his co-hosts on their past comments, too. Watch it all unfold, below:

I suppose he could think Social Security is OK but housing and food stamps are out of hand. I realize that’s an assumption on my part and in no way dismisses the fact Beckel is himself a “blowhard”.
Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with people on Social Security. Obviously, it‘s not sustainable and needs to be changed but I don’t consider SS “welfare” like I do housing assitance or food stamps.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 10:44amThis is going on social security disability. There is a difference between that and regular social security. On regular social security it is supposed to be based on what you paid into it. Disability is different. You can pay into it for 5 years, hurt your back, and get payments for the rest of your life. A child can get put on SSI and the parents get a payment for that until they are 18. As a matter of fact one of the biggest scams used to be parents who would have their children misbehave so that they were diagnosed with A.D.D. and would get put on SSI. My sister has a son who is hearing impaired. Her son had his special education paid for, all of his medical paid for, any special equipment that he needed paid for, and she got a check from SSI every month. I never understood why she received the extra money since the government paid for anything special that he may have needed.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 12:04pmI do not put SS with food stamps and welfare because I pay into it. But the SS West was discussing was not the retirement part but the disability part. That is different. You do not pay into SS to get disability benefits. I have seen many people on it that are NOT disabled. They could work as well or better than me, they just choose not to. 81,000 new disabled in one year is outrageous and an abuse of the system. Progressives just do not like their words being turned around and used against them. They are crumbling so fast it isn’t funny. I just hope enough Americans are awake to see the writing on the wall and vote for real faith and restore, not hope and change. I have faith in my country and my country men and I want to restore the U.S. Constitution and shore it up so that NO ONE can every destroy it again. At least in our life times.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 3:44pmOk since we pay for both SS and Medicare during our working years, they are not entitlements… they are a form of forced savings to cover our living and health care costs when we get older. The fact that every President since Reagan ignored repeated expert analysis regarding inadequate funding and unfunded new benefits (such as Bush Jr’s prescription drug benefit) is all that matters in the discussion. Both programs are good programs and have merely gone the ways of corporate and state pension programs that CEO’s and politicians decided to rob. And let’s be clear, private health insurance companies would not provide coverage to 75 year old people at a level the vast majority of Americans could afford. Both programs are indicative of a longer term strategy on the part of Republicans to let the US teeter on bankruptcy in order to justify gutting all spending except the military and of course corporate welfare through the tax code. (Exxon’s $5 billion tax credit comes to mind). The federal was perfectly capable of paying its way from the early 1980′s til now. But alas, you can’t throw 2 wars and provide a $120billion a year prescription and cut taxes at the same time. But perhaps West like his colleagues really have some trouble with math.

His smarmy “Kiss my ass” response would have had me punch his potato nose were it not for being in an airport.

By the reports admission from page 4, “It’s true that more Americans than ever are relying on SNAP dollars to help make ends meet during the recession. In fiscal year 2011, both federal expenditures for SNAP ($72 billion, excluding costs) and the number of participants (45 million) were the highest ever.2 More than one in seven Americans receives SNAP benefits. This year monthly participation topped 46 million, and a report from the Congressional Budget Office projects these numbers to climb even higher, peaking in 2014 and coming down after that, assuming an economic recovery. Assuming an economic recovery? You know what happens when you assume? You make an ASS out of U and ME! You can’t assume that things will get better in the future, and to depend on it is totally irresponsible. And from page 5, “The goal of this report is to provide policy makers, advocates, and SNAP participants with the information needed to develop policies that ensure SNAP resources are used to reduce food insecurity and promote healthier diets, and not to subsidize the profits of the food industry or banks.” Reduce food insecurity? So the goal isn’t to inform people how they can get off government assisntace but to demonize the food producers and the banks and to convince people that SNAP is a program that is there to make things “fair”?

The “report” doesn’t even attempt to discover the real reason why so many people are now enrolled in SNAP. And it is obvious that there is no concern over the continued expansion both in enrollment and cost. Why is that? Well if I had to guess based on what I have read about this Simon woman, it seems that she envisions a future where everyone is on SNAP and that SNAP will not only dictate what food producers can market to consumers, but what consumers can eat. Gee it makes me wonder if this could in any way be tied to the new affordable care law? Nah that would be silly and conspiratorial, government agencies and liberal progressives never work together to promote their benevolent leadership.

Report Post »My wife was on disability for the last 7 years of her life she had 2 backs surgeries and part of her stomach removed (ulceratic condition) and it took her 2 years and 3 applications to get it. I know several people that are on it because they have said that they are depressed but are at the club every night drinking. I also don’t understand how being obese makes you disabled, I am not being insensetive to people that are overweight I just don’t see it as being disabling unless you are too large to get out of bed. There is definitely rampant fraud and abuse of the SS disability system but to tell you the truth I think that is exactly the way that this administration wants it, more people enslaved by piddly amounts of free money.

All about the money? Maybe, I don’t know. But that being said, Social Security is a joke. I saw a comment on here talking about how it isn’t bad, just needs to be changed. No, it is terrible. Why am I paying into something so that someone else has a retirement? Why did they have to do that too? The Government is getting ridiculous, the more we let the Feds take the more they will take. Why are we ok with this? Social Security is a form of forced savings for retirement, underneath it all being a way for the Gov’t to raise money to forward its at times ridiculous agenda. Now they are forcing people to buy health insurance. What’s next? They going to force me to put solar panels on my home? Drive a Chevy Volt or pay a “penalty”? Attend “The Church of the United States” or pay a “penalty”? If you think those things are not possible, well I‘m sure we all thought government mandated health insurance wasn’t possible either.

Allen West is speaking of the later(SSI) and what he said is absolutely the truth. I know this because I have a friend who works for SSI and said that they are overwhelmed with applicants. My friend also said that they are being forced to approve all applications whether they qualify or not. This is being done on purpose to over whelm the system. It used to be a long process to get approved for SSI, but not now and Allen West said it correctly. Furthermore, Col Allen West is a decorated soldier who has earned many medals and ribbons. What have you done for this country, other than decorating it with your ignorance?

One guy has nothing physically wrong with him is about to get approved for disability because he claims to suffer from anxiety. The only anxiety I have personally seem him demonstrate occurs when he can’t get his hands on the crack cocaine that he sits around smoking all day. So the over $140,000.00 the govt is going to shell out to him is going to end up in a crack pipe so this waste of human space can sit around and get high. Another person came here from Jamaica got in welfare, medicaid and applied for SSI and while he was waiting to get his $600,000.00 check from SSI he began a profitable prescription pill business with some Florida pain clinics. He would get huge scripts of percoset, vicodin, and Zanax and come to Ohio sell them on the street and make 10 to $15,000 about once every 3 to 4 weeks. It shows how poorly and how much fraud waste and corruption enter the arena when government gets involved.
