COLUMBIA, S.C. (The Blaze/AP) — The Justice Department on Friday rejected South Carolina’s law requiring voters to show photo identification, saying the law makes it harder for minorities to vote.

Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez said the law didn’t meet the burden under the Voting Rights Act and tens of thousands of minorities in South Carolina might not be unable to cast ballots under the law.

Perez said non-whites comprise about one-third of South Carolina’s registered voters. Minorities also are one-third of the registered voters who don’t have the right ID to vote.

South Carolina can sue over the rejection, pass a new law or submit more data to the Justice Department. Spokesmen for Gov. Nikki Haley and Attorney General Alan Wilson did not immediately respond to email Friday, a state holiday.

As The Blaze reported in September, the law was part of a push among Republican-led states to tighten voting rules. South Carolina’s new voter ID law requires people casting ballots to show poll workers a state-issued driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. military ID or a U.S. passport.

The Justice Department must approve changes to South Carolina‘s election laws under the federal Voting Rights Act because of the state’s past failure to protect the voting rights of blacks. Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union have challenged it.

According to The Hill, eight states have passed similar laws in recent months: Wisconsin, Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, Alabama, Rhode Island and Tennessee.

      People must have picture ID to fly, cash a check, use a credit card, go to the hospital, see a Doctor, and on and on. The Dems want to engage in voter fraud again, so look for them to attack any states with Republican Governors who have voter picture ID laws. Republican minorities also follow the laws and you don’t hear them complaining.

      You have to have ID to get welfare,food stamps,A JOB buy a car or anything. My 92 year old aunt that has never drove has a ID just to see her doctor and to get Meds.. So what the hell-o problem is with th little ppl showing there ID to vote we have a right knowing who is voting in our own country.

      I would like to know who cannot get a photo ID. Everyone needs one. Are they trying to say that the poor can’t get ID? Let’s see, when you go to get a job, you have to present a photo ID and your social security card. In order to get welfare, you need to have a photo ID. In order to buy alcohol or write a check, you need it. Who is left?

      When I voted here, I had to show 2 photo ID’s AND proof of residency.

      I had recently moved 20 minutes away, just over the county line, and I wasn’t in “The Book”.

      Registered voter for 12yrs. in this State of PA, with my Current voter ID card, and I still went throught all This?
      That’s right, it was only a Primary vote and I was a registered Rebublican.( Changed from Independent so I had a vote)

      ……oh wait, that’s right… The TEA Party is another terrorist group….gotta keep ‘em out…….

      The only thing the Voter ID law discriminates against is illegal voters. What would you expect from a party that pushes a ‘provisionary ballot’. The ‘provisionary ballot’ allows anyone to vote anywhere besides their precinct. It’s particularly designed with voter fraud in mind. Under this law people can vote multiple times including by absentee. The various precincts are then charged with determining these various multiple voters and only allow one vote to count. It would require all precincts to get together and compare voters/votes. This is not going to happen, especially where democrap controlled precincts are concerned. It’s too much of a burden even if the precinct managers were conscientious. For the purpose of getting elected and turning this country into a socialist “utopia”, the democrap party is more than willing to ruin the credibility of our most sacrosanct freedom, the freedom to VOTE. This communist DOJ commits one crime after another, and this is basically a declaration of war on our freedoms. Will we respond in kind??

      The republicans have made every effort to reconcile the democrap charge that some minorities don’t have the wherewithal to obtain an ID. By having people actually go to those people’s residences and deliver the ID. We know what democraps are about, it’s not about the above, it’s about the democraps wanting to keep the voter fraud avenue open to them. Democraps are no-good son s a b it ches.

      Citizens are required to have ID in public, required to have ID (drivers license) to drive, ID to do our banking, blah, blah, blah.
      Obama administration DOESN’T want ID to vote,,,,because they NEED the illegal votes from the illegal immigrants. They (illegals) like how Obama has afforded them rights in the U.S. They are counting of the illegal votes and the Justice Department (Holder) will see to that.       Illogical arguments are becoming standard fare from our “justice” department. And, IMHBLO, almost daily resemble the same backwards illogical arguments used by Hamas, Hezbollah and the Palestinians used to explain their terrorist acts against the rest of the wold.

      If there ever was a segment of people in society who DO have photo IDs it “IS” the poor. They access more social and government subsidized programs than any other sub segment of society.

      And if you have ever gone to local, state or federal office and tried apply for ANYTHING you KNOW a photo ID “IS” required. You can’t even get a library card. But who is lined up for blocks before daylight to get ‘obama money’..?

      The ‘justice department “IS” correct, this “IS” racism. But it’s against white people. Who seem to be, generally speaking, the only people who want a one person one vote fair election.

      The only people that this law discriminates against are illegals and the dead. Nither can get a legal picture ID. In Texas you register to vote when you get or renew your drivers licencse or state ID. I know some of the people that help at the polling places and I still show ID along wirth my voter registeration card – doen’t hurt a bit.

      I stood in voter line at my precinct years ago, and watched as a young woman was asked for her ID. I think it may have been in KY. If I recall, she was voting provisionally. So, there are SOME laws apparently that already require (or DID require at some time) that you present ID !

      Now, the worst part is, as I stood behind her, I could see over he shoulder. She held her wallet up close to her bosom, and, proceeded to look through not 1, not 2, not 3, but FOUR social security cards, until she found the one she wanted to present to the precinct poll worker ! (I reported this, but all I got was a “tsk, tsk, what a shame” response.

      Unbelievable. When I vote, I am supposed to show identification with current address. This generally boils down to a driver’s license. I don‘t know if it’s an actual law, I’m guessing now that it is not. So, SC passes it as a law to show identification in their state, and the Justice Dept strikes it down?

      Who doesn’t have identification? Oh yes. Illegals. Even the poorest of poor minorities have some form of identification for alcohol, cigarettes, WIC, driving, etc. Those without identification can only be classified as illegals hiding within the system.

      Citing discrimination against minorities for anything by the attorney general’s office is simply a diversion. The real reason they want to eliminate I.D. at voting places, guards on the border, and are challenging states’ voter-passed laws to curb illegal immigration is because every single one of these AG emploiyess…..led by the anti-white racist Eric Holder……despises whites and the white power structure in this country, and are pursuing a radical agenda which is their way of bringing about a “minority” controlled country. That’s really want they want.

      I know it would be symbolic, but……. S. C. should pass a law, mandating…. the right to vote and the purchase of “assault rifles”. Require the same form of ID. Problem solved.     A photo ID is required to drive, cash a check, withdraw funds from a bank account, sometimes to use a credit card, to pawn items at a pawn shop and many other daily activities. So why is it such a problem for people to prove who they are to vote. I posit that people against voter photo ID are for voter fraud. Racism and discrimination complaints and a smoke screen to allow continued voter fraud.

      ID is free in Tennessee, theoretically anyway. A couple of folks went to get a picture ID and stood in the wrong line and complained about having to pay for the picture ID, which is a drivers license. I don’t know if that is going to bring the whole thing down. The reason it has to be free is that they were afraid that paying for the ID would be like a poll tax.

      I agree with most everybody up to this point, that the idea behind the Justice Department’s decision is to allow voter fraud. HOWEVER, this is the Blaze and every article put up here is facing an onslaught of heavily conservative, anti Obama, comments and opinions, and I am usually among that crowd.

      But let’s look at the other end of the spectrum, what if the Obama administration had made an executive order or somehow forced legislation that required every single person in the US to register with the government and get an ID if they wanted to vote. Guess what, I think that the majority of this forum would be attacking him for that too. Do you disagree? I don’t really know, but I’m simply saying to everybody, the filter through which this news is presented is one that highlights the worst of the Obama administration (albeit that’s most of it) and we automatically assume that’s the viewpoint to take on anything they do, I simply ask, look at the other end, how is that more conservative, REQUIRING BEING REGISTERED WITH THE GOVERNMENT? I dunno where I stand on this issue.

      When we had the rules of moral law enforced there was no need for voter ID. The mear fact that you were present in the USA meant you were a legal vote. This is no longer true…

      Now we have so many here that are illegal it is now demanded we have it to protect our lawful voting rights as citizens.

      Along with allowing OUR laws to be baypassed it has opened a whole new world of fraud that would not otherwise be present

      I am proud to live in SC and to have our governor standing up to this bully administration. Though she gets a lot of bad (liberal) press in our state, her willingness to stand up to the thuggish DOJ is precisely why her ratings are so high nationally.     My handicapped son has an ID. He takes his voting seriously. I cannot for the life of me understand why every adult in this country can’t use the same system my handicapped son does. It is not that hard to do and he can’t read. You just go in and tell them you want an ID, pay a few bucks and they send it to you. This is simply a matter of Democrats wanting little or no control over ONE person voting ONE time. If you are someone that votes often in the same election just remember there is someone watching from above and HE does not care for cheaters and liars!

    They tried to screw us out of the Boeing plant…won’t let us dig our port another 5 feet deeper to handle larger ships from the expanded Panama Canal…blocking parts of our immigration law and now this? How can these people do anything in life without a photo ID? I have to show a photo ID several times a month. November 2012!

      I couldn’t agree more — anyone who doesn‘t understand the need for a legal form of ID probably doesn’t understand the need for the voting system to be honest — one vote per registered U.S. citizen. The fact that liberals like Eric Holder oppose it just PROVES that they don’t want the voting to be honest.

      The DOJ should be prosecuting real criminals like the Black Panther thug out side the the polling place or the thousands of illegal thugs in LA, Phoenix, El Paso and Houston. Maybe a prosecution of the people responsible for Fast and Furious and the risky loans to Beacon and Solyndra.. Congressmen who profited from insider trading.
      Get some real criminals and some real crimes taken care of. Quit blowing smoke over states attempts to enforce Federal Law and prosecuting law enforcement personnel (Sheriff Joe) for doing their jobs.

    We need to change the name of the Justice Dept. to the racist dept. Where is the evidence that blacks are more likely to not have an ID. By the way it is extremely racist to always refer to Obama as a African American when he is half white. That tells you all you need to know about him and his supporters. Eric Holder is the most racist AG we have ever had and that includes all those prior to the civil rights movement. Why do you think MLK Jr. was a Republican?

    If You are homeless and a drug addict living on the street and named Micky Mouse or Adolph Hitler you will have a hard time voting.If You’re mentally retarded.living in a group home you will have a hard time voting the way your care workers tell you to vote. How about just make this simple requirement. If You can not say your address in English you can not vote and will be deported,unless you are a refugee.

    Open a Voter ID office. People have almost a year to go get their ID done. Free of charge. Put notice in Newspapers, TV, Radio and post it all over town/city.

      It is free in 11 of the 14 states that require them. Yes they technically are not free as they are being paid by the taxpayers, but they are free to the few folks that are supposedly photo id less.

      Hey GRANDMA can we see eric holder and bho’s photo I.D.? I lost my wallet with my license,S.S. card, credit card etc.and I got my photo I.D. ! You need birth cert., SS card, etc.. This is no problem to obtain I.D. unless you are an illegal immigrant,a fugitive or some other miscreant,this has nothing to do with RACE,but the obamaniacs will beat that dead horse back to life
