‘Travesty of Justice’: DOJ Official Denounces Handling of New Black Panther Voter Intimidation Case

Travesty of Justice: DOJ Official Denounces Handling of New Black Panther Voter Intimidation Case

Christopher Coates testifies on Capitol Hill on September 24, 2010.

Stephen Colbert was not the only one testifying on Capitol Hill today. Lost in the media circus following Colbert’s comments may have been the testimony of a far more important individual.

On Friday, Christopher Coates testified in front of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission about the Department of Justice’s handling of a voter intimidation case last year.

Coates is the whistle-blowing Justice Department official who revealed a “hostile atmosphere” within the department, and supports former Justice staffer J. Christian Adams’s claims of bias against cases that involved white victims and black defendants. Both have criticized the Justice Department’s downgrading of a case involving voter intimidation by the New Black Panther Party at a voting station in Philadelphia during 2008 presidential voting.

In his testimony Coates blasted “senior political appointees” at the DOJ for “gutting” the case.

“Given this outrageous conduct, it was a travesty of justice for the Department of Justice not to allow attorneys in the voting section to obtain nationwide injunctive relief against” the defendants, Coates testified.*

He said that he believes the Voting Rights Act has not been enforced equally, and that certain civil rights groups have pressured the department into molding it into a de facto law benefiting minorities: “Many of these groups act … as special interest lobbies for racial and ethnic minorities and demand not equal treatment but enforcement of the Voting Rights Act only for racial and language minorities.”

(Read all of Coates’s testimony here)

The DOJ had advised Coates, a 13-year veteran of the civil rights division, not to honor a subpoena to speak on Capitol Hill, but he decided to ignore their request and testify at a U.S. Civil Rights Commission hearing on Friday anyway.

He called the attempt by the DOJ to silence him part of  “the hostile atmosphere that has existed within [Justice’s Civil Rights] Division for a long time against race-neutral enforcement of the Voting Rights Act.”

Since last year, Coates has been transferred to the U.S. attorney’s office in South Carolina. According to Fox, the Justice Department has denied the allegations over its handling of the New Black Panther intimidation case, saying that it was downgraded “based on the merits, not the race, gender or ethnicity of any party involved.”

*(Editor’s note: The case was not dismissed in its entirety. Per Coates’s testimony, the decision was made to “dismiss three of the party defendants in the case and order[] the limitation on the broader injunctive relief … against the one remaining defendant.” According to earlier statements by Adams, the original punishment for the defendants was set to be a full injunction — meaning they could never be near a voting station again. In the end, the only penalty given was that one of the defendants — seen in the video with the baton — could not be near a polling place with a weapon until 2012.)

UPDATE:

You can view Coates’s testimony on the C-SPAN website here.

Unfortunately Coates’ testimony only exposes one of many failures of Eric Holder and the DOJ. This hearing should spark many other investigations but probably won’t.
I would describe the current DOJ and Eric Holder as “willfully inept” and quite possibly criminal.
The DOJ is soaking up a lot of money for sitting on their hands and not protecting us, which is the duty to which they are charged. Instead they seem to be protecting the administration’s friends and supporting voters.

Obama says the Civil Rights Commission is acting “stupidly”. A beer summit is in order.

Far as I am concerned, you boys can put your beer back in the mule from which it came.

This is an interesting twist and this commission action reflects many of us Americans will not stand for this type of clear black racism by the Obama – Holder administration. Back in 2008, those of us who voiced opposition to Obama were instantly labeled racists. This false claim of racism by left liberals and especially by Black America continued into 2009. Today, those allegations of racism are tired and worn out; I do not witness much of this screaming racism this year.

This commission was convened for only one reason. This reason is so many Americans stood up and demanded this issue be addressed. This is not a question of guilt nor innocence on the part of this black supremacy group, Black Panthers. Evidence of guilt is insultingly obvious; no trial is needed. Question now is whether or not Obama and Holder are guilty of black racism.

I believe previous testimony of J. Christian Adams and current testimony of Christopher Coates, taken in context of actions by Obama and Holder, well proves beyond any doubt Obama and Holder are hardcore black racists bent on inflicting as much injury as possible upon White America.

More succinct, Obama, Holder, members of their administrations, are hateful black racists.

Their being known black racists will probably lead to Obama being our first black president and our last black president. I do not foresee America electing another black president for centuries to come. A spin-off is many Americans will be looking at local black political candidates and silently wondering, “Is this person a black racist?”

With all this damage done to our nation by Obama, Holder, Sharpton, Jackson, Wright and other psychotic black racists, along with the Congressional Black Caucus shown to be populated by criminals and thieves such as Rangel, Waters and others, Black America has destroyed its reputation for generations to come.

No doubt we will hear, “Those white folks are to blame for all of this.”

Black America has drained the mule and are sipping with a grin, sipping Black Messiah beer.

BEN BEAIRD loves go-go girls, “you go girl.”

There is another girl who is not a go-go girl like me. Reaction to this racist scandal, Ben, is predictable and expected. I believe this corrupt administration of Obama will prevail.

Abigail Thernstrom, vice-chair of this Civil Rights Commission, last month stated about conservatives, specifically the Republican party:

“This doesn’t have to do with the Black Panthers; this has to do with fantasies about how they could use this issue to topple the administration.”

Abigail Thernstrom is not a racist but she is clearly biased. Most ironic, Thernstrom is described as a “conservative” member of this commission looking into this racial bias of the Obama administration. She is alleged a conservative but her background reveals a contrary story.

Thernstrom sits on the Massachusetts Board of Education and her Ph.D. is out of Harvard, same as Obama. Thernstrom has extensive ties to Billy and Hillary Clinton. There is much else in her background which point to her being an extreme left liberal. An example is she co-authored a number of books with her husband, Stephan Thernstrom, who is a Harvard professor.

Some titles of their books: “No Excuses: Closing the Racial Gap in Learning“ and ”America in Black and White: One Nation, Indivisible”.

Both Abigail Thernstrom and her husband have extensive and historic left liberal credentials.

Abigail Thernstrom, vice-chair of the Civil Rights Commission hearing current testimony, views this matter as a Republican ploy to undermine the Obama administration. Thernstrom is denying those Black Panthers engaged in voter intimidation and Thernstrom is denying racism within our Department of Justice and within the White House.

Thernstrom views all of this as misconduct by conservatives, views this as a political ploy.

My opinion is this Civil Rights Commission is patronizing Americans, is paying lip service to America. I do not expect justice to come out of this commission rather expect a white wash of Obama and Holder to be issued by this commission. Clearly Thernstrom decided long back the outcome of these hearings will be vindication of Obama and his administration.

I cannot figure out why she is labeled a “conservative” member of this commission. This is clear to me Thernstrom is far left liberal and she has no interest in administering justice.

Abigail Thernstrom is not a go-go girl like me, Thernstrom is a no-no girl.

I watched the entire commission review with Coates. Chilling. In addition to the blant racism was an even more sinister bit of information about the voting lists in eight states. Areas in predominantly black and democratic states are not upgrading or clearing their lists. Meaning the dead can rise and vote. Meaning voter fraud perpetrated by said states and aided, abetted and encouraged by the Obama administration. Remember Acorn? I now wonder just how many ‘true’ votes were made for Obama.
The lamestream media has made no mention of the hearings, preferring the antics of Colbert (a deliberate distraction) over the criminal allegations made about Obama’s DOJ. The commission itself will attempt to cover up and discredit Coates, esp after watching Yaki (little pudgy weasel) and Thernstrom.
If this is whitewashed, watch out, all you folks talking about taking things back in the upcoming elections could find that the elections are skewed in favor of democrats and the government agency that is supposed to prevent this fraud is lock step with the administration

Has anyone seen, multiple times, this NBP guy with a “billy” stick who was apparently intimidating prospective voters at a Philadelphia voting district? If so, just how could the Justice Department deny any intimidating impropriety????? What do your lying eyes say when you see the video??

This was, without a doubt, the most overt, arrogant travesty of justice. For the Department of Justice to arbitrarily dismiss charges against these defendants….., is beyond outrageous, it was actually a condoning of the same behavior in future election events.

    This entire episode stinks!!!

He just kept saying it was all about THEIR “ideology” but it seemed to me that since he said there was nothing to consider (facts don’t matter to progressives) it was HIS ideology that was making his claim obsolete. These types of things always show that dems/progressives are ALL about ideology and will ignore what is right or fair according to facts while rep/conservatives will hold their own accountable when there is wrong doing (ex. BROKER 0101 looks forward to poll booth confrontation, “I would love the opportunity to interact with fine young men like the New Black Panthers.”

Would a crazy red skinned girl meet your needs? You are such a likable boy and I do like you although you often appear to be perplexed. With my liking you I will arrange this for you. I can appear dressed in my traditional clothing, a bit of war paint smeared on my mug, some feathers braided in my raven black hair, plenty of teasing jiggling flesh showing, maybe wave around a child’s rubber tomahawk while dancing like a savage. I can chant and scream in my native tongue, none of which you will understand until I run over to you then throw my arms around you and give you sloppy wet kiss then whisper in your hairy ear,

“White boy, you get in there and vote smart.”

Would this satiate your need for an “opportunity to interact” out front of a polling station? I will even drive my tail finned 1963 Cadillac for you. Let me know, I love making white boys weak kneed with shy embarrassment!

      This should perplex you.

Okpulot taha apparently is hot for you broker! Either that or she has a deep seeded hatred of “white boys”…hmmm, I don’t recall you mentioning your race? I thought it was a relatively kind reference ,considering their conduct! That said, I don’t condone anything but positive interaction. That also said, I’m a firm believer in self defense!

Come to Purcell Oklahoma and play that crap. I would be willing to bet the community Organizer had something to do with that, and if it had been a white person doing the same that person would still be locked up on hate crime laws, the system has always been backwards, if someone uses the race card every politician runs and hides. Bring the new Black Panters to my town they wont be there long.

I second that notion. The problem is they are cowards and will only try to intimidate the weak. The real problem is DOJ’s actions. We need real accountability and perhaps that means stiff jail sentences for officials that abrogate their sworn duty. Holder, as the head DOJ official, should go to jail for this.

KLSTJ is jealous, “Okpulot taha apparently is hot for you broker!”

Oh yeah! BROKER 0101 is such a perplexed shy white boy! He is half afraid of me. I like this.

At risk of causing BROKER’S ego to explode, he is a nice boy. BROKER is polite, smart and well spoken. He always treats me with respect, and treats me in a firm but fair fashion. He is to be respected for this.

I just have an odd way of displaying respect although I am simply displaying cultural behaviors.

KLSTJ comments, “Either that or she has a deep seeded hatred of ‘white boys’…hmmm, I don’t recall you mentioning your race?”

No need, I can spot a white boy’s hide in a tanning yard from a quarter mile out. Besides, I am married to an old fashion whiskey drinking rodeo riding Okie cowboy, a white boy. Well, sorta married. Thirty years back, he and I are out working a field of corn. A Choctaw elder comes walking by and says, “auaya ohoyo ipetachi” — “you are married, celebrate your marriage.” We have been celebrating our marriage for thirty years! Our informal marriage is bound to be consummated by now.

KLSTJ adds, “I thought it was a relatively kind reference….”

Well, kissing a boy is certainly a lot kinder than waving a night stick at him!

This is all relative. BROKER would handle himself very well when confronted by night stick wielding Black Panthers out front of a polling place. However, BROKER confronted by a wiggling and jiggling red skinned girl looking to smooch on him would have the boy weak kneed, rubbery legged, sweaty and bright red of face. BROKER would probably suffer the vapors then faint.

Those Black Panther boys are squawking chickens compared to us girls. We girls have true power.

BEN BEAIRD scribbles, “like it or not Okpulot Taha is the most eloquent writer i’ve read in a while. smart, smart, smart.”

Aw shucks, you silly boy! All know I write with crayons upon wide ruled notebook paper. I am just another typical chucklehead who fancies herself to be Mark Twain. Nonetheless, keep scribbling those compliments for me! I lap up praise like a kitten after spilled fresh churned cream!

Much of this, Ben, is our family chasing after the American Dream. We are, at heart, rural Oklahoma farmers. Truth is I don’t have high school diploma and I was once an illiterate as was my husband. We were taught good work ethics and taught self-reliance. We realized a need for a better life is a good education. Literacy was a skilled we sorely lacked. We worked hard, we earned college degrees and, after years of working our fingers to the bone, we are successful in life.

This willingness to work hard, this willingness to chase the American Dream, both are sorely missing from our society today. This is an outcome of a sense of left liberal entitlement. American reliance upon government for a life is what has our nation in such a mess.

Thank you for your supportive words although I am not truly deserving. I am simply an old fashion Okie farm girl with spirit who speaks her mind, sometimes stupidly! I am no different than you.

That is exactly the problem. It is not that they are scary , it is that they invite conflict. Innocent voters very well could get caught in the crossfire. This type of stuff has to be stopped because the polling place and our vote is sacred. The idea that the government would let this go by and the media won‘t even cover this man’s testimony and the President himself with the AG don’t make it crystal clear this a big time punishable offense is horrible.

A person does not need to fight with them, love them or whatever. You only have to hang around after you vote and help escort those by that are intimidated. Basicly, ignore them as you would the dirt on the sidewalk. They must make the first move and when they strike, you just respond by getting up and continuing to lead others in so they can vote. The rest will take care of itself.
