At last, justice has been served in the small town of Greece, New York. The children who bullied bus monitor Karen Klein have been officially disciplined. New York’s WHAM 13 reports:
The Greece Central School District announced on Friday that four students involved in bullying a bus monitor will be suspended from school and regular bus transportation for one year.
The district is legally required to provide the students with an education.
This means the students will be transferred to the district Reengagement Center. This program keeps middle school students on track academically. [...]
Each student will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will complete a formal program in bullying prevention.
So reform school, suspension and community service. Sounds like a perfect trifecta of punishment for this lot. You can refresh your memory on the original incident here.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:14pmThis is an appropriate adjudication for the little darlings. One year is perhaps a bit much but does send a very powerful message. The remainder of the punishment is exactly correct. I just wonder if this would have happened without national coverage?

Not at all.
These kids should be punished. But celebrating the fact that they are being sent to a re-education camp, that’s what this is, is wrong. Sure, for now you support it, your passions are high and these little douche bags have something coming to them, a years worth of re-education camp seems right.
While you might think that my opposition to them being re-educated by the government means I might condone their actions, I may think that your satisfaction with the punishment means you support re-education camps.
The fact that this terrible story has people cheering on re-education camps just makes it all the more terrible IMHO. See past the passion and look and what is really happening here, this is being used to get the American people behind the idea of re-education camps.
At least that’s the feeling I get from reading the article and then the comments. With out realizing it people are welcoming the very apparatus they would likely put the line later to stop. People are already falling for the trap.

Posted on June 30, 2012 at 11:39amIMO the punishment is an example of justice well served. The decision came quickly, was severe enough to hopefully deter others of acting out and has also shown parents that they will be inconvenienced when their little darlings act up. Hooray for the school board and the bus monitors new found good fortune.

So totally agree with you. Which speech is considered offensive speech and which is protected? NAMBLA’s website which promulgates the concept of pedophilia has been upheld as free speech. As repugnant as these teenagers behaviour was, is it protected free speech or do we, the USA, send those we deem to not speak “properly” to “formal programs”? Why is the ACLU defending the KKKs right to adopt a highway? Who defines FREEDOM OF SPEECH?

Posted on June 30, 2012 at 4:19pmWhat these kids did was despicable, but did this bus monitor deserve all that money. What is a bus monitor? Is that all they do, just ride the bus and ignore what goes on? It’s my understanding that no one would have known about the incident if one of the kids had not posted video on youtube. Is her job as monitor not to report bad behavior? I would bet that this was not the first time these kids had misbehaved. It should have been her job to report them.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:02pmLook, they did a bad thing…but a year’s suspension? That’s way excessive. They are already receiving death threats, going to psychologists, and having to face very public scrutiny; they are going through enough already. This sort of punishment can ruin the rest of their lives if not handled properly – all for making fun of someone who is now reaping massive rewards because of it.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:33pmThey’re just kids who made fun of an adult and you guys are ready to round them up and throw them in prison. Stop letting your emotions lather you into a rage and think about this. These are children who made a mistake, not witches that deserved to be burned at the stake. Yes, they deserve to be punished but they already are having to endure a lot because this is so public. Community service and a prohibition from school activities…maybe sending them to summer school would be good but a year suspension goes too far.
Report Post »clearasabellnow
Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:49pmThey were acting very immature, irresponsible, and extremely disrespectful. Some of their comments were violent. No, a year is not too long. The community service is not long enough. They are bratty, spoiled kids, some of whom have pathetic parents. All kids make poor decisions at one time or another, but many of those decisions don’t involve the hurtful, threatening behavior that these little brats displayed. They demonstrated just why the taxpayers have to pay for bus monitors. We never needed bus monitors when I was in school because parents expected their kids to behave on the bus and in public.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:53pmGosh, Kyled, yes, they are just kids who more than made an mistake. Don’t you think they should have thought about the ramifications of their disgusting and inexcusable behavior BEFORE they visited their brutality on that bus monitor? You ‘think’ like a leftist…they wouldn‘t have to endure the fallout if they hadn’t acted like a bunch of uncivilized savages, would they? I couldn’t care less what they have to endure as a result of their idiotic decisions, and you shouldn’t, either. I wonder if you’d raise your kids in the same fashion as these thugs.

Moving them to another site just sends the wrong message. That you can act this way, we taxpayers will just pay more to provide a different venue with lots more bouncer-style staff. The message should be that you cannot act this way anywhere.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 10:02pm“Do not do the crime if you can not do the time” is an old saying that my parents taught me that has been a motto that I live by. If you will recall these kids threatened to stab her with a knife and come to her home to harass her. They thought it was funny to record the event and put it out on the web. Now they are crying about how they feel. Really? It is people and parents like you that do not hold children accountable and tell them that everything they do is wonderful and how entitled they are. Our society has several generations of children that have no respect for anything but $$ and self.
I say Boo…hoo to their school suspension, community service and bullying class. However, to those hypocrites who are making threats to them I hope that you are caught and are punished more severely than these kids.
FYI, making a verbal threat to someone in such a way that makes them fearful is considered an assault. Touching someone in a threatening manner is considered an assault. These kids are lucky they did not end up in juvenile detention. From the level of punishment I am certain this is not the first time these kids have been in trouble.

But then again if they wer my kids this would not have happened because I tought mine respect and the consequences for not showing it. i did not beat them but they did learn that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. And that was not just in their science class. Mabe the parents should have to server the time with these kids. That would be true justice.

This should be as painful a process for them and something they will remember.
To a kid 50 hours could be a lifetime. 1 hr a day M-F would be 10 weeks. However, if it is 1 hr a week, that is almost 1 year.
I think what they got is fair. I was first against the 1 yr school suspension, but after careful consideration, I think it is warranted.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:03pmThat’s bogus. There is no punishment at all. All they’re doing is going to school in a different location for one year — together with their fellow harassers. They’re probably laughing. Here’s an idea — instead of one year going to school in a different place, how about they sacrifice an entire summer vacation taking extra classes? They’ll end up better educated than many of their classmates, and they‘ll have all summer to wish they hadn’t been such monsters while their other friends enjoy the 3 month vacation. I‘ sure their parents wouldn’t mind saving on some childcare costs as well.
Report Post »TrueSoundsOfLiberty
Posted on June 29, 2012 at 8:40pmI think Wiener is the only one that has it right. Why would we want to punish these kids by expelling them from school? The only thing that will accomplish is to make them more ignorant and less intelligent. They might see it as a punishment but schooling them all summer will be better for them in the long run. They learn the consequences of their actions and get more time in the books.

If I insulted an adult in my day like this I would have been black n blue. First at school then at home! Unfortunately this is the way it must be! We’ve tried both methods now and we can see the results. Those of us who had corporal punishment at both home and school turned out to be productive citizens and good Americans….not everyone went postal because of it, just the opposite in fact. We need to get back to basics for this up and coming generation who will be our caretakers someday. Can you imagine the abuse you will suffer at their hands when your in your 80s-90s? Fix em now! Or deal with them later.
