(The Blaze/AP) A Kansas teenager who wrote a disparaging tweet about Gov. Sam Brownback is rejecting her high school principal’s demand that she apologize.
Emma Sullivan told The Associated Press on Sunday that she‘s not sorry and an apology letter wouldn’t be sincere.
The Shawnee Mission East senior was in Topeka last week when she sent a tweet from the back of a crowd of students listening to Brownback. It read: “Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot.”
She actually made no such comment. But Brownback’s office saw her post, and she was called into the principal’s office. Her apology is due Monday. NBC Action News on the Topeka Tweeter:
Sullivan has received a wave of support, with many saying she shouldn’t have been targeted. Her Twitter account now boasts 3,000 followers.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 9:11pmThere is this thing known as The Constitution. It lists certain rights. One is “of the press”. Screw them! They pull something like that on me and I’ll broadcast it to the world. How dare they demand an apology! I hope she holds tight to her position and, in fact, if it were me, I’d use the attention to spew more of the same. They have no right to curtail her speech. He Emma! Tell them to “Pack It In” in a way that seems appropriate.

Young lady is removed from theater for texting and calls back with voice mail spewing as you call it a lot. Just google. A little cursing spew. Rather a lot. Fifteen minutes of fame or a lifetime. Had to see it again myself it is that good. Freedom of speech. Yes!! Good night.

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 2:32ambigger government equals less freedom. When stuff like this was pulled when i was a teen, first nobody important went through our stuff to find it. We had rights. If a note or something was found it certainly didn’t become front page news. Who in the hell are the noodle brains advising this governor. Tweets are the same as personal papers. You also have to monitor them. why are school officials monitoring them and how is it being paid for.
This will just be another teen getting a lesson on liberty. Thats good because she will grow up with conservative views. Not the faux conservative views of the governor.

As far as her comment goes, it seems to fit all the criteria to be protected under 1st amendment. In the end, the speech we must protect most, is that speech that offends most.

To have no opinion when one is needed is a criminal (not prosecutable nor should it be but criminal)
To have a crappy opinion that you pull out your $$ is the same.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 9:00pmFor those of you who would censor this young woman’s speech because it was disrespectful of the Governor, have you asked yourself what the hell they were doing checking on the contents of the tweet in the first place?
Isn’t the essence of free speech that you can freely express yourself, even if what you say is unpopular? We have generations of men and women who have given their lives to defend that right. If you would deny that right to someone because you don’t like the content, wouldn’t that cheapen those sacrifices?
If we are to censor speech that we find distasteful, aren’t you going down a slippery slope to having the government come out with guidelines as to what constitutes protected speech?

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 12:01amShawnee Mission is probably the richest part of Kansas. Their students are notoriusly liberal and dim-witted, too. Case in point: many years ago, they had a “Peace Day” at the school. They used lime to make a “peace sign” in the grass on a hill. Problem: their “peace sign” was actually a Mercedes-Benz logo. When the error was pointed out, they had a “Mercedes-Benz Day” the following day. The parking lot was FULL of Mercedes-Benz cars. So, while rich, left-wing & stupid, they DO have a sense of humor. Maybe Gov. Brownback’s folks could pick up on some of that humor and stop trying to enforce a speech code.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 8:21pmI don’t believe she should apologize if she said what she meant to say. The school should have nothing to say about her words and their only reason to discipline her should be if she broke a school rule by tweeting during a school event. If that’s the case then it should be a punishment directed at the tweeting and not what was tweeted. She is 18, legally an adult and now subject to whatever consequences come from her words. That said, I don’t think her comment had any substance. I hope that someday she learns the difference between empty words and a reasoned and reasonably stated opinion.
Report Post »TommyGuns
Posted on November 27, 2011 at 8:43pmMy sentiments exactly. Asking or coercing her into an apology denies her right to free speech. She is entitled to her opinion. If there is a penalty to be imposed, it should be for the tweeting, not the tweet.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:51pmFreedoms, like a lot of things, require training to use them properly, anyone here would think it insane to put her behind the wheel of a car without teaching her to drive, why should Freedom of speech be any different? If you want anything and all things that a certain person wants to say to be considered as freedom of speech I could simply hold the letter B key down on my keyboard, reboot at the end of my allotted words, and repeat, effectively preventing any type of meaningful discussion and blocking all of you from posting your thoughts. Free speech, to be meaningful, includes the responsibility of saying something worthwhile that will add to the discussion, not resorting to vulgar name calling, which, in the end, weakens our republic.. The principal is trying to teach his student the proper, and constructive us of her freedom so she can contribute, not tell her what to think!

The crux of the matter is though, why is a teen girl in school being hunted down by the governors own staff members? What is up with this?
