Karl Rove Condemns Discussion of Jeremiah Wright: ‘Don’t Be Doing Stupid Things Like This’

Karl Rove Condemns Discussion of Jeremiah Wright: Dont Be Doing Stupid Things Like This

(Photo: AP)

Republican strategist Karl Rove appeared on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace today, where he said that bringing up Barack Obama’s former pastor at this point is “stupid.”

(Related: Book: Obama Team Tried to Pay Rev. Wright $150K to Keep Quiet Until After 2008 Election)

“Speaking from the perspective of the Super PAC you want to try to do things that you think will be helpful to the candidate and not things that will be hurtful,” Rove said, “and frankly, trying to dredge up Jeremiah Wright– right or wrong– after this issue was litigated four years ago by John McCain deciding not to litigate it, was stupid…”

He continued: “I thought it was very smart for the Romney campaign immediately to  go out and denounce the tactic.  It certainly sent a message to everybody in America what they want the campaign to be about, and it certainly sent a message to people involved the Super PACs: Don’t be doing stupid things like this.”

Watch the video, below:

However, when the issue was previously discussed, it was largely in the context of evaluating Wright’s character and how much Obama sympathized with his views, seeing as he sat in the man’s church for twenty years and had him baptize his children.  How can a man of God say “G-d damn America“ and see the world in terms of ”collective salvation?” have been the primary questions.

Now, however, after the release of Ed Klein’s book “The Amateur” and the associated Jeremiah Wright interview tapes, the questions have changed significantly.

According to Wright, an individual from the Obama camp offered him $150,000 to stay quiet until after the 2008 election.  This becomes an issue of potential bribery and gross media oversight– especially in light of the fact that the world knows about an alleged hair cut given by Mitt Romney roughly fifty years ago.

While it is justified for the Romney campaign to stay “on message” and hammer home the disgraceful state of the U.S. economy, is it impossible to also point out the new connections and reports regarding Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama?

Regardless, David Axelrod is still slamming Romney for his “treatment” of Wright: “We’ve said [Romney's faith is] not fair game, and we wish that Governor Romney would stand up as strongly and as resolutely, consistently, to refute these kinds of things on his side. Instead, he’s amplified them in the past and he’s put logs on that fire and that’s not leadership.”

Did he bring the Medicare Part “D” that add a lot to the national debt. Did he? He and such great advisors made the path for BHO to become the president of use to be great country.

…at the risk of great bodily harm, I think I have to agree with Rove on this. Romney and the Super PAC’s should avoid the Jeremiah Wright issue. They should avoid personal issues like that and concentrate on the economy and foreign policy. That being said…Rove is only talking about the campaign and the Super PAC’s, not radio, bloggers and the rest conservative media…they can and should pursue the issue at will…I‘m sure he’d agree.

McCain was a lousy candidate. He was an old candidate. He was a crippled candidate. He was soft and he did not seek the support of talk radio for the most part. People were tired of Bush, really tired. Tired of the wars. They were uneducated and lied to about the housing and bank crisis. They wanted change, they also wanted to shed the bigotry associated with black candidates. I doubt anyone could have beat BO last time. That was the time to bring it up, not now.

Now he has a bad record. We will not win big by going after his Minister. Whose Minister is perfect? Romney has to show, he has something to offer. McCain? What did he have to offer? I never saw it. The race was Senator against Senator. What we all saw was Palin and she had too much baggage in her family to be taken seriously. She did not have enough real experience to overcome the Obama hype machine. People forget, Carter was a Rhodes Scholar but he was a terrible president. He did not understand DC and they screwed him. He ran against Mr. Ford, who was a total bore. Lots of people would make bad Presidents. Romney gets results. We need that. We have the opportunity to show Liberals make lousy Presidents.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn‘t Rove part of the administration that started two wars overseas that we couldn’t pay for? That we put on the credit card? Wasn’t Rove a part of the administration that blew a budget surplus and turned it into a huge deficit? And wasn’t Rove a part of an administration that passed a prescription benefit program that we ALSO had no way to pay for?

And wait, wasn’t Rove a part of an administration that for the first time in American history the country actually LOWERED taxes during wartime? Spend trillions on two wars and then lowering taxes on the rich?

And wasn‘t Rove a part of the administration that blew out the deficit and under whose watch the economy collapsed in the second worst economic disaster in America’s history? Wasn’t he part of the administration that had one of the worst records for job creation in the last 100 years, despite blowing out the deficit to give tons of money to the “job creators?”

And you want more of that? Are you, like, stupid or something? You want to lower taxes more and go into a third war with Iran?

Uhh… I dunno Karl, but should we really be treating swing voters who haven’t yet decided who they are going to vote for– as brilliant economic or political analysts?

Obviously the lessons of the recent French elections are lost on Rove. For all of the economic proof that the conservative policies of Merkel and Sarkozy have kept those countries in much better shape than the left-leaning countries– a total idiot socialist was elected– no kidding–even some socialists were embarrased by him–( that’s why the communists did so well).
During the campaign, Sarkozy ran on his record, while Hollande just smeared him– again and again. That’s basically all he did –supported by an entirely socialist media–personal smears and emotional attacks, along with lies about all of the money and help the new government will be handing out. This is exactly what the Obama campaign is gearing up to do. It works. The nastier Obama gets, the more people who want to believe him will feel justified in believing him.

This time around, anyone who is still undecided, deep-down wants to believe in the Obama religion.

I understand the virtue of taking the high road, but I also remember a lot of people finally starting to question Obama’s credulity back when the Wright stuff first came to light.
Obama enjoyed virtual anonymity last election cycle. Even the New York Times has recently criticized the media’s failure to vet Obama (”A Hard Look at the President,” Arthur S. Brisbane, 4/21/2012). I agree that Romney should focus on real issues, but given the President’s penchant for playing the race card (Henry Louis Gates, “African Americans for Obama”, Trayvon Martin, etc), I‘m not so sure Wright’s inflammatory speech doesn‘t qualify as a real issue in that it seems to have played a role in forming Obama’s character.

Mr. Rove appears to have the opinion that most Americans haven’t the intelligence to consider a person’s background and the economic issues of the day when choosing a President of this Republic. Rove is an example of a political class system that caters to the lowest common denominator of human discourse. They seem to try and keep the message simple, so that the ‘mob’ will understand and act accordingly. As long we merely react to the plans of the professional political operatives, we will continue to receive the same type of people that have been infesting Washington and our State Houses in increasing numbers over the years.

Yes, Mr. Rove, you are quite correct: The economy is a key to victory in the General election. That fact is self-evident. But, to regard a candidate’s background and influences as irrelevant or “stupid” will not change the underlying problems of governance by a simple election result.

Our elected representatives are behind the wheel of our system of governance and we are along for the ride. In order for us to determine the destination and the route that he/she is taking, is it not important to know from where the driver began their journey?

I beg to differ. I don‘t think McCain lost because he didn’t go after the Obama’s past. You could have brought out everything now about Obama, and the people that voted for him still would have, they were completely blinded by everything and actually believed in his “hope and change” crap. As for should Romney now be going after Obama’s past? No I don’t think he should. His superPACs and many talk show hosts around the country will be doing enough of it.

Romney needs to focus on the economy, and jobs because that is what affects all of us. There are people who could care less who Obama’s pastor was, but they do care that they have been out of work for months or years and can’t find a job. Obama has a failed record. He has nothing to run on which is why he is attacking Romney. The best thing Romney can do is show the American people that Obama did fail, and that $4 gas, 8% unemployment, $15 trillion debt, and much more, is completely unacceptable.

He will need the youth vote, the Independent vote and the disenfranchised Dem vote. He will not get the youth vote, for sure, he will only get a portion of the Independent vote, and he will not even touch the disenfranchised Dem vote. The Republicans do not have a large enough base to do it. I know that you like to listen to Hannity, O’Reilly, Beir and the rest on their takes, but they are die hard Establishment shills that report the way the establishment tells them to. If you people are telling the truth that you want Obama out at any cost, you should vote Ron Paul as he can bring those votes that are crucial in ousting Obama with a landslide victory. It amazes me that people listen to the prejudices of the MSM on Paul and believe the lies they spout.

How about sending out leaflets about Rev Wright? That would be helpful.

How about sending out leaflets about Obama’s performance with regards to the economy? That would be helpful.

How about sending out leaflets outlining all lies by Pres Obama and the Lame Stream Media? What would be helpful.

Not voting will definitely be NOT helpful.

DirtyPolitics, If Romney is the nominee, I guarantee you that a huge swath of voters are not going to vote for him. Some will vote for Johnson, some will write in Pauls name and the disenfranchised Dems, that would vote for Paul, will do like what all of you say and hold their nose for Obama. I cannot believe that the Republicans want to nominate another loser like John McCain! You guys are going to give us Obama for another four years!

Republicorp, Republicorp, We did not stop, we just had one, it was not as big as we may have wanted, but we did raise over 3/4 of a million. Paul has said that he is not spending money campaigning in the rest of the 11 primaries, and I do not blame him. Our goal has always been to gather delegates and that is exactly what we are doing. You see, Paul is unlike other candidates as he has an army of supporters willing to do the groundwork needed to get these delegates. His supporters are more loyal than anyones. We will continue to rack up delegates through the primaries and go to Tampa with an army of them. Rule 38 will allow us to unbind ourselves from voting Romney on the first round and vote for Paul. We will succeed on one of two options here, Paul wins on first round or we have a brokered convention. Paul supporters will not jump ship at a brokered convention so it will be very interesting. I believe Pauls camp can get Gingrich and Santorum delegates to come to us. I also believe that we can sway some of Romneys to come to us as the voting continues. 1920, history repeats itself.

If he had his way, we’d be bankrupt and owned by China just like they all have planned. R-D labels don’t matter. Loyalty to the United States and representation of Americans first is what determines who we need in office, and loyalty to foreign nations whether they be China or European banks or whoever, is treason in any sane world.

You must not know anything about the organization but listen to the inuendos. They are secretive, I will grant you that. They have been accused of being a secret society, because of the secrets they hold dear. They are an organization that believes in a higher power, whether it be Christian or not, but they do not elaborate to other members on that subject or on political beliefs. They do many good charity services for the communities they are part of, and as far as I am concerned, are honorable. I am not a freemason, but am a member of the Eagles, another community charitable organization with some secrets. If that is all you have on Paul is that his father was a member of a misunderstood, but honorable organization, more power to you.

Romney correct to side step it and go back to Obama’s Economy. If Beck, Hannity , Rush etc want to stay on Rev Wright great but Romney is smart to start out defining himself and what he would do Day 1 as POTUS after he has won the battle of defining himself vs letting Obama team do it then Romney can do tough hard hitting adverts. Those who want Rev Wright red meat now are missing the importance of timing. Bush/Karl Rove won battle defining John Kerry and he never recovered. Think Strategic

Is Romney ON the re-elect Obama committee? Does he not know recent history?

John McCain gave Obama a free pass the last go around when he had all the ammunition necessary to destroy Obama without telling one lie. Now we have McCain part two with Romney.

America needs a fighter, someone who can give as good as he gets. We need someone who is willing to get his hands dirty if that is what it takes and apparently Romney wants to stay above the fray.
Romney does not need to lie, the truth is what would convict Obama. Romney needs to ask questions and demand answers that Obama never gave and the media never asked. I am sick of this goody two shoes attitude of the weak, sanctimonious Republicans. Either fight to win or not at all.
