Katie Couric: ‘We Need a Muslim Version of the Cosby Show’

In CBS News anchor Katie Couric’s “2010 in Review,“ the primetime news host discusses what she dubs the ”top stories” of the year, including apparent rampant Islamophobia and Americans’ “seething hatred” of Muslims. To help ease tensions, Couric suggests a “Muslim version of the ‘Cosby Show’”:
I also think sort of the chasm, between, or the bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface this year. Of course, a lot of noise was made about the Islamic Center, mosque, down near the World Trade Center, but I think there wasn’t enough sort of careful analysis and evaluation of where this bigotry toward 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, and how this seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims, which I think is so misdirected, and so wrong — and so disappointing. …
Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show.
I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy. But The Cosby Show did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand…
As Newsbusters points out, this isn’t the first time Couric has climbed atop her high horse. Earlier this year, Couric denounced America’s so-called Islamophobes:
It might be Islamophobia, Obamaphobia, or both, but when loud speakers are blaring ‘Born in the USA’ and signs say ‘No Clubhouse for Terrorists,’ it’s clear we aren’t just talking about a mosque anymore. There is a debate to be had about the sensitivity of building this center so close to Ground Zero. But we can not let fear and rage tear down the towers of our core American values.

While news organizations answer to many constituencies, including advertisers and shareholders, the journalists in those organizations must maintain allegiance to citizens and the larger public interest above any other if they are to provide the news without fear or favor.

Journalists rely on a professional discipline for verifying information. When the concept of objectivity originally evolved, it did not imply that journalists are free of bias. It called, rather, for a consistent method of testing information–a transparent approach to evidence–precisely so that personal and cultural biases would not undermine the accuracy of their work.
4. ITS PRACTITIONERS MUST MAINTAIN AN INDEPENDENCE FROM THOSE THEY COVER
Independence is an underlying requirement of journalism, a cornerstone of its reliability. Independence of spirit and mind, rather than neutrality, is the principle journalists must keep in focus.

Journalism has an unusual capacity to serve as watchdog over those whose power and position most affect citizens.

The news media are the common carriers of public discussion, and this responsibility forms a basis for our special privileges.

A show that illustrates that not all Muslims are the same would be a big step towards a greater understanding of equality and the establishment of a true respect for the human condition. The defensive posture that is adopted by many of the comments on this article is the exact obstacle that stands in the way of progress. As a world traveler and a student of religion, I can assure you all that you oversimplify the situation. I would remind you that the only reason that the majority of you are Christian is that you happened to be born in a part of the world that is mostly Christian. Many of you are less devout than others. The same is true in Muslim countries, even in theocracies that adhere to sharia law. Simply painting all Muslims with a broad brush is an ignorant and racist thing to do, and Couric’s proposal is an insightful and thoughtful suggestion.
I don’t know why I bother, you people have already decided that everything she says is wrong. Enjoy your delusion.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 7:54pmTo give you some ammo, the comment that because the Quran says something automatically means that all Muslims take it literally does not pan out. How many Christians believe the earth is 6,000 years old and Genesis is accurate history? (I do BTW, not that it matters to this argument). Most Christians I know will differ from the Bible in one place or another. Why would Muslims, though much more literal and devout, not be the same?
Good luck with this argument though, it gets you nowhere in conservative circles. The majority of people in most of these forums believe that all Muslims are the same and that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. It is an attitude I do not share, but when you look at the evils Islam has done I can certainly understand it. I am not going to go out on a limb and defend the “good” Muslims until they stand up themselves and denounce terrorism and Sharia law. I am not holding my breath.

The hatred that Muslim extremists and jihadists feel towards us is spoon fed to them from infantcy. It’s a way life, and no amount of kow towing will ever change that. The notion that we as Christians or Bhuddists, etc. can somehow embrace Islam and go about our happy lives, is indicative of the arrogance and elitist attitude that pervades our society. I have seen and known of things in the world that would curl your hair. Americans aren’t perfect, but three hundred million of us have lived in much more peace with each other that any other group of people in the history of the world.

I’ve never feared that they or any other christians were sitting around trying to figure out how to kill all non-believers. On the other hand, just how many mosques are providing shelter and stage for mooslems who want to kill us. Same goes with the imans in our prison system. When everyone is covered from head to toe, how would you ever know who to trust. You can’t tell one from the other. If mooselimbs don’t want to assimilate, there is a whole lot of other places they can go. As you probably know, the US is listed #11 as best places to live, making 10 other countries a better deal for them (according to Newsweek). Sweden is #3. I say they move there since they have almost taken it over.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 10:28pmFirst, her suggestion was not insightful it was just kind of a stupid Hollywood feel good idea that liberals like to toss out so they can be judged on their intentions not on their results. Second, the notion that the Cosby Show can be credited with playing a signifigant part in improving race relations in the country is a stretch. It didn’t hurt, but America was already quite familiar with black America via shows that predated it such as Sanford & Son, Good Times, What’s Happening, and The Jeffersons. All of these shows were very popular across the racial spectrum and predated The Cosby Show. I imagine Bill Cosby himself is rolling his eyes at the comment. Third, and most important, the notion that Islamaphobia has pervasively gripped America is based upon the reaction WTC mosque proposal. That tells me Ms. Couric needs to spend more time trying to understand the American culture rather then wondering how American’s can better understand Islam. There are raw nerves around 9/11 so much so that even the appearence of impropriety is going to draw a lot of scrutiny. In this case, the fact that this was named the Cordoba Project, referencing Cordoba, Spain where Muslim armies conquored the city and converted a large Catholic cathedral to a mosque. If you and Ms. Couric cannot understand how this can be considered a victory monument of sorts, then both of you have wasted your money on your elaborate educations. Lastly, for you LQTM, I ask that you simply come out of the ivory tower of the academic world for a while before you make some broad brush assumptions about Americans or any other population for that matter. My best guess is you have lived a very sheltered life yourself in the sense that you have likely only been around academics and elites your entire life. Your notion of diverse thought has more to do with the vacuum that is academia, rather than actually trying to go out and interacting with people who are not of that same background. Don’t misunderstand this as me insulting you, but simply offering some friendly device. I value education, but value more so my real world exposure that my education has enabled which also has included world travel. I suggest you do the same if you haven’t already.

The few that do already have applied for asylum in Western countries and are wanted heads in their country of origin. Islam remains a strong ideology involving Sharia law that it is impossible to change the simple minded to grasp human values except with divine help. Look at how the Shah of Iran was overthrown by the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. Most of the Iranians were already opened to Western values. But for the clerics, the revolutionaries, it was the time to start purging the land from secularism. Islam is an ideology, it starts small then by the time you wake up, you realize Sharia Law has become the law of the land.

I also think that if you asked the blacks in this country they will tell you that they don’t care for Cosby because he has always called it like he saw it when it came to black culture, violence, family structure, drugs, education and work ethic. It is also evident since the election that even though a black man was elected, conservatives are still a bunch of racist, bigotted, knuckle dragging, puritanical, old fart morons with a genetic brain disorder that hate everything, especially our black president, simply because he is black. That being said, maybe Oprah, Spielberg, Disney, Michael Moore or maybe even Spike TV would be interested . Just because you wouldn’t be able to advertise and generate revenue, or have shows on the station that in any way shape or form would be offensive to the Islamic religion or Mohammad. (That would pretty much eliminate everything on TV….violence, sex, drugs, alcohol, swearing, offensive music, gay relationships, let me see, anything else…?) It is all about the money. They can mock and insult and oppress Christianity, Christ, and God but that’s OK because we all know that Christians have not been known to chop off heads, hands, poke out eyes or stone people in the name of Jesus for quite some time. I cannot remember the last time I read about something like that in the news related to the Christian faith.

I hate the islamophobia too, but they bring it on themselves. As everyone is loudly telling then, American Muslims need to stand up and loudly and clearly denounce and fight radical Islam. If they do not do this then they will be known as the religion of hate and they will be hated. It is in their hands. There are a few good ones who are outspoken against terrorism, but until we see the community as a whole denounce sharia law and confirm that they are Americans first things are not going to change.
As far as what I personally believe, I know for a fact the evils Islam teaches. But I still take each and every person at face value. That is all I can do. I do not believe that they are all out to get us, but many are and until the others show where they stand they will all be treated with suspicion and even hatred.

This is why I do give Muslims the benefit of the doubt though, there are many who just want to put food on the table and raise their kids in what they consider to be godly morality. If you grow up in a country and live in a medieval situation you’re bound to show some medieval behavior. Christians are burning witches in Africa in the name of Christianity as I write this, thousands a year (Google witch burnings in Africa if you’re interested: Terrible stuff). That’s not the fault of Christianity, it’s a fault of society and rampant superstition.

Last I checked, in the US, more Christians go around knocking on doors trying to convert people than Muslims. There are also substantially more people killed by Christians than Muslims. My parents live in the middle east and I am a student of religion who has read both the bible and the Koran. I think both are radical and a detriment to society, but that is beside the point. The problem with Islam is that within Islamic nations themselves, the religion is being used as a shield for the governments. Authoritarian regimes are using the Islamic religion to justify their own existence, much as Christianity was abused in the pre-Enlightenment days to justify the continued rule of the despots of Europe. In the post-colonial 21st century, Islam is used a sort of neo-nationalism, a popular flag to get people to rally around.
“The West wants to crush us!” their leaders decry. “Who cares if we’re corrupt and brutal? You must follow us to save our way of life!” When we are reactionary, and treat Islam and Muslims with contempt and fear the way we unfortunately often do, we are backing up this worldview. When we call Islam a religion of evil that must be wiped out, the only people we’re helping are the bad guys. They want to paint us as an existential threat.
This ideology can permeate even in non-Islamic countries, where recent immigrant populations become paranoid that their host countries are out to crush them.
If we want to combat this, we need to be able to distinguish between Islam as a religion and part of culture, and Islam as a religious weapon that’s being wielded. Islam is not intrinsically bad. Muslims are not intrinsically bad. But they’re being used and abused by bad individuals.

Report Post »Are you talking about just in America or world wide? Either way, Christians may be telling the Gospel, but I’ve yet to see one of my brother or sisters in Christ murder someone for not converting.
If you want, I could come back and post link after link of persecution towards Christians and other minority religions in countries world wide, many of which is because of perceived “blaspheme” against their prophet Mohummad, wanting to convert from islam or trying to tell the gospel to a muslim.
You may have some knowlege because you’ve “read” the Bible and Koran, but by your own remarks here, it is clear you don’t understand either Christianity or islam.
There are many folks who have studied world religions and philosophies as well, while Katie Curic obviously is not one of them.
I am neither hateful of a muslim person- although I think islam is an evil cult, but I also know by years of watching and learning about Islam. I am not afraid of them either- but I will never submit to them either, which is what Islam is all about. Katie may want to actually do a little history, and reading, as well as some of you folks who still like to believe Islam is a religion of peace. Then, with a straight face, still try and convince people that Islam is persecuted and misunderstood.

The quotes that chumpsky gave were all about a set group of people, that burnt their own children in fire. Those people did it to gain prosperity and person freedom (reminds me of abortionists). The Bible said to destroy those wicked people. Guess what they are all gone, so those verses are null and void. The only other verse was if people with in the community picked it up. In America if you burnt your child to death for prosperity, I pray you get the chiar or firing squad.
Now lets look at the other book. It tells Muslims its okay to sin against non believers, it says stones will cry out their is a jew behind me come cut its head off. The word Islam means submit or submission. The old testement taught to treat foreigners with the same laws and respect. Jesus said Love your neighbor as yourself. So you tell me how the Bible and Koran are the same. How one is bad and the other is good.
One taught that a certian group of people was evil and needed to be removed, it was and those laws are over. The other book is open ended until the end of time, it is a commandment to kill those who are not worth making slaves if they refuse. You have not studied both and if you did it was from an Islamic point of view.

I also learned quite a bit on the news and TV shows about things like beheadings, famale circumcision, trying to be good enough to get to heaven and not being sure if you have been good enough, having to pray 5 times a day, etc. I pray, not to be sure I will get to heaven, but in gratitude that I am saved and will go to heaven. There is no doubt that I will be there because my Savior died and rose again for my sisns.

But what are the chances the liberal messaging in such a show would be to create a theme where Muslims denounce and hold their people accountable, outwardly demanding the end to the insanity carried out in the name of their religion? Would it go so far as to espouse the idea that Muslims, the so called meek and peaceful ones, have the ability to cleanse their societies by way of westernizing them? Or when arriving here in America, that they bring with them the intentions of acclimating into our society?
Would that be the premise Ms. Couric, to create imagery that denounces terrorism carried out by Muslims? Or are you aiming at messaging that is more consistent with the antiquated themes of liberalism, that the entire world’s problems are America’s doing, including the current warring violent image of the Muslim people?
Unfortunately, for your show, in your eyes these people are justified in their actions and inactions to reshape the world by killing, maiming, threatening, destroying economies, instilling fear and promoting corruption even if by simply turning their backs to it. Christianity and American tort law Katie, refers to a principle of the “good Samaritan.” Is that going to be in your show: Muslims, responsibly, in the eyes of their god, helping defeat Islamic sponsored terrorism free of fear of their own deaths? Where is the responsibility of Muslims’ Katie, to the notions of the “good Samaritan?” Is that one of the themes you plan to develop with your proposed show, Katie?
Logic, common sense, liberalism’s history . . . something tells us Ms. Couric the root of your liberal idea, of your show, is merely another chapter in liberalism’s desire to create a new world order. Is that possible? Perhaps the UN would be your largest advertiser and provider of messaging. It would make for a wonderful scheme. The citizen’s of the US pay a carbon tax to the UN and the UN pays you which then allows you to propagate the messaging of the new world order . . . a complete circle of insanity. Sounds just like liberalism, redistributions . . . theft by another name.
Ms. Couric . . . perhaps your depth of liberalism does not allow you to see clearly what you are doing, what your life’s mission and all of liberalism is doing to the nature and balance of the world’s evolving forces . . . But you probably do; we do.
