Kent St. Prof. Reportedly Yells ‘Death to Israel’ at Event With Israeli Diplomat

Professor Yells Death to Israel at Kent State

A Kent State history professor, who has allegedly been linked to elements of Muslim extremism, reportedly lashed out at a former Israeli diplomat speaking at the university Tuesday night.

The event was co-sponsored by the undergraduate student government and entitled “An Evening with Ishmael Khaldi.” Khaldi spoke in regards to his book, A Shepherd’s Journey, which details his life journey from a small tent in a Bedouin village to the inner-circles of the Israel Foreign Service.  When his speech ended, Khaldi opened the floor to a Q&A, where History Professor Julio Pino rushed to be the first to question Khaldi.

John Milligan of KentWired, an independent student publication, reports that Pino began to question how Khaldi could justify speaking of foreign aid given from Israel to countries like Turkey, when that aid was financed by “blood money that came from the deaths of Palestinian children and babies.” Milligan, a senior majoring in magazine journalism, then captured the the most shocking part of the exchange:

“The crowd fell into an awkward silence as the two continued to exchange words from across the auditorium.

‘It is not respectful to me here,’ Khaldi said.

Pino responded by saying ‘your government killed people’ and claimed Khaldi was not being respectful to him.

‘I do respect you, but you are wrong,’ Khaldi said. ‘It’s a lie.’

The exchange ended as Pino stormed out of the auditorium shouting ‘Death to Israel!’

Prof. Julio Pino

While Pino’s comments may seem shocking, the professor has been linked to these sentiments before. In 2003 Pino wrote an article that some said was “glorifying a suicide bomber,” and in 2009, was reportedly linked “to terrorist activity – such as posting bomb-making instructions on a terrorist website.” Pino admitted to colleagues that he had contributed articles to a website entitled “Global War,“ which describes itself as a ”jihadist news service.” When the controversy first emerged in 2007, Journalism professor Tim Smith, fellow faculty member at the university which is well known for its progressive history, defended Pino’s right to contribute to “Global War.” Telling KentWired:

“‘Basically, it comes down to the right for people to disagree with government – it’s their right to do so,’ he said. ‘It’s embedded in our Constitution.’”

The Blaze reached out to Professor Pino himself for comment in regards to Tuesday’s altercation, as well as History Department Chair Dr. Kenneth Binda. There has not yet been a response to those inquiries. Kent State Associate Vice President Thomas Neumann told The Blaze that Tuesday night was not an official university event and that Professor Pino, like any other member of the audience, was protected under the First Amendment to ask any question and state his own personal opinons.

“It was not a university event. He does not speak for the university and we do not speak for him,” said Mr.Neumann over the phone Wednesday.

When pressed if the university was concerned if Professor Pino’s comments could alienate students, Mr. Neumann said that the university has already given their comment on the matter.

As he was exiting the event Tuesday night, John Milligan told The Blaze that one person in the crowd yelled “Shame on you!” to Professor Pino.

In phone interview Wednesday, Milligan said that he and “pretty much everyone there” were taken aback by Professor Pino’s rant.

“I had never even heard of him until researching for this story,” said Milligan. “Definitely surprised.”

Milligan told The Blaze that even though Pino is a tenured professor, he would be shocked if there were not some sort of repercussions for Pino’s comments.

Professor Yells Death to Israel at Kent StateFollowing the altercation, Khaldi remained calm and continued to take questions, telling the crowd “Let’s respect each other; it starts from there.”

Milligan said that following the speaker, students remained in the auditorium, “admonishing the professor’s behavior.”

Once student reportedly said, “I get it’s freedom of speech and all that, but that guy just makes us [the university] look bad.”

Kent State College Republicans President Greg Allison wrote via email:

“I am appalled by the comments I witnessed this evening made by professor Pino. It is in the best interest of the University as a whole to have a formal and respectable debate on controversial issues, which does not include inflammatory remarks such as these.

It is with grave concern, that we are employing a professor, Julio Pino, that has endorsed terrorism upon the United States of America, yet receives tenure on our dime!”

Joshua Burton, Chairman of the Ohio College Republican Federation, has urged that Kent State officials investigate the educational practices of “this dangerous professor, to ensure this hateful and violent rhetoric is not being instructed in the courses he teaches.”

Development Director for Hillel at Kent State Char Rapoport Nance, stressed to The Blaze that she was not at the event Tuesday and could not confirm the alleged altercation. However, Nance said of what has been reported; “If there was an outburst or inappropriate comment of that type, it’s a bad thing for the university community, students and world at large if we cannot engage in meaningful conversation without outbursts.

“Campuses are suppose to be a place of civil discourse.”

Nance told The Blaze that since Tuesday night’s event, concerned students have come to the Cohn Jewish Student Center to discuss what happened.

Kent State is a public research university in Kent, Ohio, known for massive student riots in May 1970.

The Jewish civil rights group Shurat HaDin offers a Campus Hotline (718) 907-9258 to report any incidents of anti-Semitism, discrimination, intimidation or harassment on American college or university campuses.

This story was updated with reaction from Kent State Associate Vice President Thomas Neumann, KentWired reporter John Milligan, and Hillel at Kent State Development Director Char Rapoport Nance.

And yet he remains in an influential position teaching the next generation on our dollar while espousing hatred and lies toward one of our closest allies?????? Antisemitism is brewing more and more from the OWS crowd to universities. If you look at the economic situation and the social environment we have some eerie similarities to pre- WW II Germany. I know not as extreme yet but it certainly could degenerate to that point. Inflation and devalued fiat currency, increasing centralized government control, increased unemployment, increasing social unrest, giving up liberty for “security” measures, Government take over of certain large areas of economy, heavy government influence over education curriculum, etc….

It’s Theological not Political. The Bible states that the whole world will come against Israel, (Yes even America) and when the dust settles – I don‘t want to give away the Book’s ending – you can read it for yourself. However, God did promise – “Those that bless Israel – he will bless – those that curse Israel, he will curse. I stand for Israel – period!

It is spiritual at its core, but I was looking at it more from a historical point of view so that we can learn and understand our future better by referencing the past. The Bible does this on a regular basis. I would also say it is most defintiely political, economical, social etc, but these are not mutually exclusive from the spiritual as all areas of life fall under the sovereignty of God and His word.

Another fine example of allowing the “religion of peace” to operate within our ranks. “Death to Israel” is free speech of course, but he should be saying it from his driveway, not being paid by the taxpayer to advocate it to students. Participating in terrorist sites is also a problem. It ceases to be free speech merely once you advocate death, destruction or terrorism. At that point, your butt should be thoroughly investigated.

ROSE-ELLan, I think you need to bone up on your history. You should start with the Hadith and Sira in regards to real problem bewteen the Arabs and Israel/Jews, and why the Arabs have never wanted peace and will never stop the hatred and terrorism as long as Israel exists and there are Jews in dar al-Islam – and why they rejected a Palestinian state in 1937, 1948, and again in 2000. Then move to 1870 when Euro Jews escaping pograms came back to their ancestral homeland and started buying land, legally, at inflated prices from ansentee Arab landowners all too happy to sell off then worthless and barren land to Jews stupid enough to buy it at high prices. Over a few decades and tens of thousands of more Jews coming in, buying the land and working it, employing Beduin Arabs by the thousands, and after making a Jewish culture and identity of the area given to them with international support. They owned the land and it was Jewish in nature. The study the three attacks meant to exterminate not only the tiny Jewish nation, but the Jews in general. Pay particular attention to 1967 and Resolution 242 and how the Israelis abided by it but none of their neigbors did (except, eventually, Egypt, who got the Sinai back for it). In short, while yu’re railing on with your tripe about “Zionists,” crack open an objective history book on the subject. Start with the Hadith and Sira for a basis of understanding.

The “lets be careful not to offend anyone and use genderless pronouns” group out there is equating big buisiness/wallstreet with the stereotype of Jews being in control of all the money and this is where we see them for what they are, bigots! They have the nerve to say conservatives are racist and bigots? Every time one of them opens their mouths there is a 50:50 chance they will stumble and say what they actually think. Hypocrites to the very end and yet somehow the rest of us arent as smart as they are? I wish I had all their experience at 42 that they think they have lol. Interesting how churches can’t have a word to say about politics, but “teachers” can be instigators, social and political subversives, propagandists or what ever and it’s okay. I understand the “freedom of speech” liberty while also seeing the paradox of keeping the adults quiet while state schools tell the “students” what ever they want to tell them.

@StoicOne: I agree that tenure is a major problem but the real problem with colleges and universities are the huge endowments these institution are sitting on. It allows the universities to act independently without control from financial pressures. They are also outside the rules for endowments placed on businesses that have philanthropic enterprises. If you run a philanthropy and secure endowment funds you are required by law to distribute 5% of your endowment yet universities are excused from this law.

In the case of Harvard which reported a $32Billion endowment, everyone of its students, undergrad and graduate could stay on campus and receive meal plans and pay no tuition for a four year education. All without putting a dent in its endowment fund that continues to earn compound interest on its original value. Harvard isn’t alone either. Google Americas wealthiest colleges. You can get a list of the amount of money involved. Maybe OWS is right; college should be free! Just not on my dime.

It is from questioning the status quo that allows innovation and creative expression. I dislike your link and the suggestions it makes about teaching. I am a professor at a state run research university and honestly, there is not nearly enough critical thought being taught or shown by students. Your link explains that critical thinking skills are used against capitalism and the foundations of this country. It says that this is concerted effort and was begun in Reagan’s administration. I won’t get into the irony of its timing, instead, you should recognize the irony of the message which it sends. It is demonizing critical thought because the criticism is attacking people’s firmly held beliefs. This is the basis of critical thought though? It is critical thought that allows people to recognize alternatives. If you don’t question what is being fed to you, you follow what your parents teach you, you follow what the media teaches you and what your friends and even you teachers espouse to you. Questioning doesn’t mean that you should oppose or fight against a set of beliefs…it means you should evaluate. A popular issue on this site is the mainstream media. We question the so called facts from the media because of this skill at evaluating. There are many sheep in this country, who will follow whatever line of ** that is being fed to them…but those who are able to be critical, those are the leaders, the innovators, and sadly but sometimes, the communists.

@ HKS: Yes, you are correct — the May 4, 1970 events at KSU ended in four deaths. Living in northeast Ohio, I remember it very, very well, even though I was only eight. In fact, my uncle was one of the guardsmen and ended up testifying in federal court. He only talked about it once in my presence. I don’t know if he fired his weapon or not.

What many folks don’t know, and the reason I responded, is this: MUCH of the unrest at KSU was perpetrated by non-student “professional radicals,” who traveled the country protesting, committing acts of violence (such as burning down the KSU ROTC building) and generally causing unrest.

Hey, folks, any of this sound familiar? Think OWS. Think ACORN. Think SEIU. History repeats itself.

P.S. KSU needs to fire this shameless radical muslim “professor” immediately. It sickens me that Ohio taxpayers feed this creep.

Indoctrinating students how? All the talk about colleges being liberal bastions with professors spouting ideology neglects some very important facts. First, students choose which classes to take. If you take an upper level history course with radical called islamic society or arab/israeli relations, you already have an opinion and his course won’t do anything to that. Second, most professors have no bias at all. If you are an engineering student, you will never be told that capitalism has flaws or Reagan hated black people. Third, even if you are a lib arts student, you will learn facts. There is no class anywhere that teaches opinions, and no professor anywhere that makes up facts. They may communicate their opinions, they may avoid certain facts, but they only indoctrinate those that respect them and trust them, and this is earned not given. Finally, professors are experts. They went to school for a long time, read a lot of books, and often have experience in what they are teaching. You don‘t take your broken car to a doctor and you don’t take your broken arm to a mechanic. You can generally trust a professor to know what they are talking about because they spend their lives learning it. I can understand how the thought of indoctrination is frightening, but it does not occur in any different way than you get indoctrinated by a non-fiction book.

MLitened thinks our university professors are “experts.” Experts are people like me who are out in the real world doing what we do best at a high level. Those who can’t compete with us are in the universities being parasites and teaching students the same mediocre ******** they learned from people just like them. I became an expert after university and actually learning on the job, honing my skills, and competing with others doing the same. It wasn’t until I was actually doing that I realized how incompetent and full of sh&t my professors had been. I now have no respect for them. They’re losers. Now, they would certainly be “experts” and winners to a dipsh$t like you, but to those of us who work for a living, produce, compete, elbow our way through the adult world, and know what life is about, they’re nothing. Zeros. Jokes in our chosen professions. They are the ones who either chose to remain stunted, tried and simply couldn’t make out here in the real world, or took the easy way out being parasites in life. You can relate to that, I’m sure.

      @ La Bomba
Hmm. I guess you’re right, I must be a joke and universities must be a waste. All those idiots gathered together to do research on things like curing cancer…Gimme a break!? If you want to cure cancer you should get some experience with it…and if you want to be a doctor, forget the formal education and just get yourself into a hospital and start scalpuling. All of those wasted dollars supporting all that cutting edge research while we should have been busy ‘doing’. I’ll tell my colleagues to stop working on their projects (like the one that assists targetting for US navy ships or the ones that reinforce building materials in earthquake prone regions). Just useless jokes to the ‘real’ experts…oh yeah, which Waffle House do you manage?

ps. did a professor touch you inappropriately? Either that, or you must hate libraries too…those stupid books with all their ‘expertise’ and information.

I’m sorry but Glen is just wrong on this stuff. There is a war coming. There are three sides. There is the OWS/Prof Pino side, there is our side, and there is the State/Establishment/NWO side. Peace and love and harmony are great lyrics in songs but evil must be confronted and the threat to our constitution is clear and present. I swore an oath to defend that against all enemies foreign or domestic. Defending it doesn’t mean standing by while I watch our POTUS wipe his tookus with it or this group of nit-wits who would do the same if they were in power.

We had better wake up folks. If we keeps standing on the sidelines while our adversaries gain strength we will be in trouble. Our side sorta feels like Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler. Oh I forgot, we’ll elect Romney or Perry or Bachman and it will all get better.

      Rothbardian_in_the_Cleve,

There is the OWS/Prof PinoState/Establishment/NWO side, then there is our side. Now that looks more like it.

The best thing you can do now is prepare for yourself, your family, and unknowing friends, talk to your neighbors and those that you trust, discuss and inform. I’m only half way there, do you have a list that you can prepare from? If there is no intervention this will not be pretty. All of us here at the blaze need to share ways to prepare within our posts. Maybe there’s something you have thought of that the others have not. One way to connect is through FreedomWorks.com, I have connections in my area but no one seems to want to get together, discuss, and prepare or at least no one has mentioned it including myself. Right now it is every man and woman for themselves, fortunately we live in an area that hasn’t been effected other than lack of jobs and a increase in food stamp usage, no protesting. Let me know if there’s anyway I can help.

Sorry for only replying just now, classes + job = difficult to post online. First off let me say I was at the event in the auditorium of Bowman hall, my professor offered extra credit for attending. This behavior was very uncharacteristic of Pino or at the very least of what he displays in classes. He teaches history and I can assure you he’s not bias in that respect and is usually very respectful and non-argumentative, he doesn’t even get involved in discussions in class, he lets students duke it out. At the event in question he did begin with the loaded question mentioned in the article, not denying that, but he wasn’t as combative as the article makes it seem. It was very calm, but both you could tell the speaker was uncomfortable and so was the audience. The audience quickly turned on Pino. As for his exiting comments he wasn’t “shouting” I was closer towards the front on the right and he left out the back left and I know he said something due to the reaction of the people around, but neither I, nor even the speaker I think, heard or could make it out, and people booed him on the way out. Anyway, that’s the story, take it or leave it. Have a nice day.
