Kids Freak Out As TX Police Officer Pepper Sprays Tiny Squirrel

Earlier this week, we showed you how police officers in Colorado peppered sprayed an 8-year-old who was threatening teachers with a weapon. Today we show you an officer in Texas pepper spraying something else wild — a tiny squirrel.
A school resource officer in Mesquite, TX is under heavy scrutiny today after students caught him on video spraying the little creature. The students can be heard in the background screaming for him not to. He did anyway:
A police department spokeswoman says the squirrel was behaving erratically before the video begins, and the officer was simply trying to protect the students. Some students say it was too much.
What do you think? Is this excessive force, or are people overreacting? Share your thoughts below.

“you little dumb bimbos , it probably had rabies and could of bite you ,, must been a liberal school to be that dumb”
Mike, I think what you meant was “…It probably had rabies and could HAVE BIT you. Must HAVE been a liberal school to be that dumb.”
Seems you are the one who cannot even write proper English. It’s a real classy move to call 8th grade girls “bimbos” you ignorant, illiterate pig.
What part of “It was released back into the wild do you MORONS not understand? If it had rabies it would have been destroyed. Since it DOESN’T have rabies and was referred to as a BABY squirrel it is clear the squirrel was NOT charging the students as the ONE lying cop alleges. The DOZENS of OTHER WITNESSES (the students) seem to have been correct in their assessment of the situation and the danger.
What we have here is another cowardly cop on power trip. Not all cops are like this, and when you defend this type of “officer” you are really lowering respect and expectations for all officers.
Yeah, this guy is a real hero hiding out in the Dallas ‘burbs of Mesquite protecting our citizens from 6th graders and squirrels. What a chump.

Every park I’ve ever been in, when the squirrels get fed by humans they lose their fear and come up begging. Once in Yellowstone a squirrel bit his way into the backpack I had under my head as I took a nap and ate my food. It‘s common for them to throw pine cones at me when I’m in the hammock under “their” tree.

School staff felt the “tiny Squirrel” that was acting as if it was rabid, aggressively chasing the students on the playground, teachers tried to help and it scared them enough to call 911 (not animal control)
SCARED AND STUPID the UNTHINKING UNION TEACHERS did nothing to REMOVE the children from potential harm and let them WATCH this happen
Now the parents are having a witch hunt going after the police officer – but not the teachers for not making sure the children were removed from the danger of a potentially rabid animal or seeing how this potentially rabid animal was put down.
I was disgusted by this news story.

Posted on April 8, 2011 at 8:53pmWARPHEAD – Same here. A few years ago, two little fur balls were scrounging around my yard for a couple of days. I knew they were too little to be off on their own (like the one in the video). Figured something happened to momma. They would come up to me when I went outside and one was bold enough to climb up my leg and get on my back. They didn’t know fear – they were babies!
Then while I was watching them from a window, a hawk swooped down, picked one up and carried him away. I ran out and grabbed the other and brought her in. We named her Annie (as in Little Orphan).
Raising a squirrel until she was old enough to survive on her own is one of those experiences I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Posted on April 8, 2011 at 4:34pm@ GRANDMA……………..squirrels can carry rabies it is just somewhat rare………….Squirrels are almost never found to have rabies. And squirrels have not been known to cause rabies in humans within the United States. Bites from a squirrel are not normally considered a risk for rabies. Most small rodents and lagomorphs rarely develop rabies; however, woodchucks accounted for 86 percent of rabies cases among rodents reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1985 through 1994.
In all fairness to the officer how is he supposed to know that…..He did right when not sure if an animal could be carrying a dangerous disease and is around kids it needs to be neutralized and removed. Good job sir even though I hate the kids had to see it and be bothered by it.

They act ‘erratic’, just as the officer reported, and ‘erratic’ is an understatement! Crazy, nuts, weird, SQUIRRELLY, all fit. I had to use a bb gun on one last summer behind my apt. (using a .22 in the city was an invite to a court date! So I used Mrs. Schteveo’s Red Ryder BB Gun.) Anyway, Mr. Squirrel was lying on his back, RUNNING in circle, squeaking and squealing like something was after him. He then tried to climb one of those fiberglass area light poles!!
I still gave him the benefit of the doubt, until he chased a cat that used to hang around back there! The cat was 100% feral, and any squirrel so crazy he chases cats, well that needs some sweet repose. My grandsopns all played back there, tht dude had to go.

Posted on April 9, 2011 at 7:07pmThe officer was WAY off base! It was a baby squirrel for God’s sake! and for the people making comments in regards to what if it was “rabid”, if you knew anything about they are about squirrels, you would know that squirrels are NOT carriers of rabies! The only way a squirrel could have rabies was if it was bit by a rabid dog or raccoon, and the odds are it would be dead after being bit! …. they’re a little on the fragile side. Do your homework before making stupid statements.
Also squirrels will interact with people when they do not feel threatened. No doubt the squirrel had plenty of snacks to nibble on around the school from students, and judging from the reactions of the kids they very possibly had been “taking care of it”. I have over 8 squirrels on my property who every year bring their young to come get food and treats. They are not a threat, maybe a nuisance from time to time to some people, but seriously, maybe the “resource officer” needs to have a little more “resource” training!
If he’d spray a baby squirrel with mace, imagine what he would do to your kids when they act irratic! Guess we’ll just have to take their word that it got medical attention….. idiot

Posted on April 9, 2011 at 10:01pmTo anyone who says “rabid squirrel” , you need to understand that this would be extremely rare, like one in a 100 million squirrels. Squirrels act erratically as a normal part of their behavior. They have a very high metabolic rate and they are prey animals so they would not act like a dog or a kitten. Y’all need to get out in the country a little more. The big city is making you stupid.I have a lot of cop friends and this guy is no cop. A “Resources Officer”? He’s an idiot. Back to the Mall Cop duty for him.
