Kill Switch: FBI Could Shut Off Internet for Thousands on March 8 to Eradicate Virus

FBI Could Shut Down Internet for Those Infected With DNSChanger Trojan MalwareIt’s a scary thought, having the Internet forcibly shut off for you. But it’s just what some Fortune 500 companies and government agencies could face as the Federal Bureau of Investigation tries to get rid of an extremely malicious computer virus.

Krebs on Security reports that the malware — DNSChanger Trojan — infected more than 4 million computes in more than 100 countries thanks to the work of six men who were arrested in Estonia for the crime in Nov. 2011. Gizmodo reports that the virus causes the user to be sent to fraudulent websites by changing DNS settings and even prevents them from visiting security sites that could help rid them of the virus.

(Related: Seven charged for infecting 4 million computers with ‘false advertising’ malware)

In the United States, a half a million computers were reportedly infected with a security firm finding at least one infection in half of the Fortune 500 companies and 27 government agencies. What’s to be done? Krebs on Security reports that any computer still infected by March 8, 2012, will have Internet service disconnected from it:

“Yes, there are challenges with removing this malware, but you would think people would want to get this cleaned up,” said Rod Rasmussen, president and chief technology officer at Internet Identity. “This malware was sometimes bundled with other stuff, but it also turns off antivirus software on the infected machines and blocks them from getting security updates from Microsoft.”

Computers still infected with DNSChanger are up against a countdown clock. As part of the DNSChanger botnet takedown, the feds secured a court order to replace the Trojan’s DNS infrastructure with surrogate, legitimate DNS servers. But those servers are only allowed to operate until March 8, 2012. Unless the court extends that order, any computers still infected with DNSChanger may no longer be able to browse the Web.

Rasmussen said there are still millions of PCs infected with DNSChanger. “At this rate, a lot of users are going to see their Internet break on March 8.”

Krebs reports the FBI saying that it is currently working on ideas to minimize impact on users in that event. Rasmussen says that cleanup, even if the deadline is extended, will still take a long time given the number of computers and says in addition to being “an interesting social experiment”, it would be a faster fix.

Gizmodo reports that once you know you’re computer has a problem, that the fix isn’t too painful or time consuming. You can check to see if you’ve been “victimized” here.

FBI Could Shut Down Internet for Those Infected With DNSChanger Trojan Malware

FBI Handout

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in November that this case was first of its kind because the suspects set up their own “rogue” servers to secretly reroute Internet traffic to sites where they had a cut of the advertising revenue.

“Without the computer users’ knowledge or permission, the malware digitally hijacked the infected computers to facilitate the fraud,” the indictment says.

Once their computers were infected, people seeking to visit Netflix, the IRS, ESPN, Amazon and other legitimate sites were redirected to sites where the defendants collected income for each click on an ad, authorities said. The malware and corrupted servers also allowed the defendants to substitute legitimate ads on other websites with replacement ads that earned them more illicit income, they added.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thank you, Freedom.Fighter. I was just thinking the same thing. To repeat, PLEASE, please read the article carefully. It’s NOT a kill switch at all. There’s nothing scary going on here unless your PC has a virus (technically called a “Trojan horse” in this case).

What happened was: (in really, really oversimplified terms)
      1. A “Virus” broke a whole lot of computers and made their browsers go to the wrong site.
      2. The wise, all knowing FBI benevolently decided to set up some servers to make the infected computers work properly.
      3. The FBI then decided to take their temporary servers down, and now the infected computers won’t be able to browse.

It’s not a kill switch at all – it’s computers infected with malware (AKA “viruses”) being broken until their users fix them.

People even if this story isnt talking about a kill switch for the interent, that does not mean they dont have one. In fact wired has ran storys talking about interent kill switches. The DHS has talked about them. SOPA had a line or two about interent kill switches. So they are serious about this stuff.

Switch To The Russian Satellite Internet Service.

You will be able to run your business if all your customers start using the Russian Internet servers that are less then $100/month. There is also a amateur radio internet that would allow you to access the Internet through Canadian browsers. I do not know how I will be able to operate my mail order business?

FBI agents take an oath to uphold the law and what they do is break the law and wage war on the American People. The FBI is now just a Gastapo that will break the law to enforce Obama’s orders.

A lot of bad info bouncing around about this one. First, the DNS IP is not the IP address your computer is working at. To check your DNS in windows, open a Command Prompt window and type:
      ipconfig /all
(note where the space is.) If your DNS comes up as 192.168.1.1 or something close, then you are on a network behind a router and have to log into your router to find your DNS address. If it is in the list above, you have a problem. These DNS servers were set up to deceive you and misdirect you to fake websites, or use your computer to help with a denial of service attack. Apparently, the fed put a patch in the system, but will be removing it on March 8. Just check your DNS to make sure you are clean.

Hijacking the DNS of a computer is nothing new. Been happening for many years. Server 2000 with SP-2 had a nasty hole that SP-3 fixed. Port 143 or 149 if I remember correctly. SMBdie could reboot almost any Server on the planet back then. There is something else going on. Shutting down the Internet will not fix a hacked or compromised Server or workstation or home based PC. Something else is going on.

Once it is out there, there is no taking it back.
We need to be much more diligent in the PREVENTION area and much more prosecutorial and punishing in the enforcement area. We need to teach our children that “hacking” is NOT cool, that it is criminal. We need to stop celebrating crooks like ‘anonymous’. We need to stop HIRING crooks (rewarding) them. Since these attacks hurt our economy, let’s call them what they are, acts of war on America! and prosecute them as such. Maybe if Jimmy saw his buddies being HANGED on live TV, at the ripe old age of 18, he might switch off his servers and get out of mommy’s basement out of utter FEAR!
Let’s also not discount the possibility of china or other countries carrying out such attacks.
Remember our “drone” that went down in Iran? It wasn’t shot down. Nor was it jammed. It was HACKED … OVER THE INTERNET … BY CHINA!!
They ‘shot’ down one of our planes, and our President says and dies NOTHING about it, while they continue to steal our top secret stealth technology.
We didn’t go in after our helicopter tail, and we didn’t go in after the “drone”.
I guess the Chinese didn’t get enough from our helicopter so they needed an in tact working stealth system. Now they have it. And our President & Vice President WELCOME the chinese!!!

WOAH!!! Hold on here, the title is totally misleading on this. The FBI got special permission from a court of law to set up REAL DNS servers to act in the place of the FAKE DNS servers that the DNSCharger malware was using. Now the court order is going to run out and the FBI will shut off these TEMPORARY DNS servers. THIS IS WHAT THEY SHOULD DO AND WE SHOULD WANT THEM TO DO IT! When DNS stops working on these computer, companies and people will know that they have something wrong and will get their computer fixed.

I for one APPLAUD THE FBI’s action and I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in the Blaze. Come on guys, how will you be taken seriously if you mislead people with article like this claiming the FBI is KILLING the Internet. Then in the article itself you explain that, that is not at all the case. I am really, really disappointed.

WE WANT THEM TO TURN OFF THESE DNS SERVER. Firstly, the FBI isn’t an ISP and secondly so that people will get their computers cleaned. Who knows what else they’ve got on there if they were silly enough to infect them with DNSCharger in the first place.

I also agree something is not kosher if a server is infected it can be switched to another server while the infected server is cleaned I don’t buy it. My ISP often does things in the wee hours of the morning disconnecting and resetting the connection I have learned to always use a port monitor shutdown when done and unplug both connection and power. not that I don’t believe the FBI, but what will shutting down the DNS servers accomplish? The “millions” of PCs that are already infected are not allowing virus updates or MS patches to fix the problem, so cutting them off from the internet is a moot point.

How about a self booting anti-virus image that the user can burn to a CD? Insert, reboot, fix, reboot, good to go.

Learn how SOPA and PIPA are designed to work and you will understand SOPA and PIPA are not dead they just bypassed Congress. Microsoft is also implementing banning 3rd party software if it not approve and deemed legitimate by Microsoft it will not run on their operating system therefore keeping the 3rd party softwares from installing hidden malware.

      ANONYMOUS T. IRRELEVANT,

They aren’t cutting off private internet. The only thing that is happening is that the FBI’s replacement DNS server is being turned off. Simply change your DNS settings to point to a different DNS server and you will be able to browse the web again. On March 8th, only the infected computers will no longer be able to BROWSE the web (they will still technically be connected to the internet). Every other devices that might share that internet connection will still be able to browse the web like normal so long as they aren’t infected.

I suggest that most of the people here learn what a DNS server is before you comment on this story (this includes the editors of the Blaze).

The virus is likely coming to as a rootkit. Probably Zero Access. It can NOT be stopped by firewall, antivirus, or malware software. It is a root kit. It rewrites the MBR then loads itself first before anything else loads . Norton Power Eraser easily removes it, and probably others as well. watch for Tunnel adapters in Win7 as well. Must ‘view hidden’ to see them. Usually IP6 teredo Peace.

      @Mark
“In the United States, a half a million computers were reportedly infected with a security firm finding at least one infection in half of the Fortune 500 companies and 27 government agencies. What’s to be done? Krebs on Security reports that any computer still infected by March 8, 2012, will have Internet service disconnected from it”
      —————————————————————
After reading this 4-5 times, I still cannot figure out EXACTLY what the FBI plans to do, other than shut off half of the Fortune 500 companies and 27 Govt. agencies in order to “fix” a trojan. What is there about Fortune 500 that is NOT private? I know what Domain Name Systems are and what they do. I have been in IT since before the IBM PC. Hell, I use to work on XENIX-run ALTOS systems before PC’s, and I remember the 8 inch floppies they used. I STILL want to know why the FBI is doing this and not the Fortune 500′s in-house IT staff? The 27 Goverment agencies should already have their own IT staff doing this, not the FBI. I still don’t buy it.

If DNSChanger is root-kit, then it IS a nasty virus. A LOT of Anit-virus apps will not detect root-kits.
      Thanks for the tips.

      ANONYMOUS T. IRRELEVANT,

The FBI isn‘t fixing anyone’s computer, they are simply shutting down some DNS servers. The servers that they are shutting down were only put into place to allow computers with the trojan to work properly. It is not the responsibility of the FBI to run DNS servers that help mask the effects of a trojan. The true fix is still the responsibility of the administrator over each infected computer. I think the question should be why the FBI even put up DNS servers to mask the problem in the first place.

I may be a skeptic and conspiracy theorist and paranoid, but I distrust this administration, the DOJ, and all associated with Obama. There’s some “back door” crap going on behind this whole idea. Exactly. They are having a difficult time trying to regulate the internet. If they control the off switch………the command the livelihoods of millions and millions of people.

With the way people are addicted to the iPhones and PC’s, cutting off the internet would be like cutting off a crack-heads drug supply.

The withdrawals of the masses would be instantaneous.

      DEAR CONSPIRACY NUTS,

They are not shutting down the internet.
They are disconnecting a fake DNS server that was rerouting “Infected computers”.
The government had taken over the infected DNS server to resolve the issue temporally.
The infected computers will no longer be able to access domains once they shut the fake DNS down.
Unless your an idiot with an infected computer this DOES NOT EFFECT YOU.
Now go back to your caves and leave technology conspiracies to people that actually know technology.
