Killing—Not Capturing—bin Laden Was Obama’s Goal

National Journal reports:

In the weeks before President Obama ordered Navy SEALs into Pakistan in pursuit of Osama bin Laden, administration officials weighed using American warplanes to obliterate the terror mastermind’s fortified compound from the sky or sending commandos on a high-risk mission to assault the structure from the ground.

But there’s one option the administration appears to have never seriously considered: taking bin Laden alive.

Killing Not Capturing bin Laden Was Obamas Goal

In an important new detail about Sunday’s raid, the White House disclosed on Tuesday that bin Laden was unarmed when the SEALs shot him in the head and chest, killing him instantly. The administration said that bin Laden resisted capture, but hasn’t suggested in any of its public comments that the SEALs were in any immediate danger when they opened fire on him during their assault on his compound in an affluent Islamabad suburb of Abbottabad.

The SEALs’ decision to fatally shoot bin Laden — even though he didn’t have a weapon – wasn’t an accident. The administration had made clear to the military’s clandestine Joint Special Operations Command that it wanted bin Laden dead, according to a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the discussions. A high-ranking military officer briefed on the assault said the SEALs knew their mission was not to take him alive.

    Pardon all US Military personel that have been accused of violence during conflict that includes border agents as well. I do not recall the death penalty being imposed on Bin Laden by any court. He is a total pig I agree but I believe in the rule of law and the constitution and killing people in this manner regardless of how low they are is not right. The whole story from the White House and the minions it is not adding up.

    Well this is the Chicago Mob way Obama deals with problems. The FEC opens an investigation of suspicious foreign donations to Obama’s 2008 election campaign , and Osama Bin Laden is executed days later. Brings to mind those 3 gay members of Jeremiah Wright’s trinity church, Donald Young, Larry Bland, and Nate Spencer who were murdered execution style back in 2007. …and the execution of Lt Quarles Harris Jr April 18 who was cooperating with a passport fraud case involving the US Department of State.

    Never forget Bush’s words about Usama, “Wanted Dead Or Alive!” These guys loved Bush and respected Bush. Can‘t say they have the same for ’you know who.‘ They were just following orders from ’their’ leader, as what‘s in office now show’s no leadership, is indecisive, waffles, and really don‘t think JSOC can take a ’community organizer’ seriously.

    I agree bringing him back would have been a dirty mess, but if there was leadership in the White House it could have been done correctly. Or if there was true leadership in the White House they would have taken him alive created this story interrogated him and dumped him in the ocean at anytime. There are certain ugly things which we are better not knowing about, but make us much safer case in point the waterboarding that helped us find him.

    Sorry to go off topic a bit but I ,m hopping mad!!!! I just heard the Obamas approval ratings went way up after dusting binladen….Are people that friggin stupid!!! I mean really!!!! This is the same guy who is destroying this country and now he will be using this to get reelected An obvious and predictable tactic and the sheeple are falling for it hook line and sinker!!! maybe all is lost if the folks in this country are that dumb!!!! perhaps it time to relocate…I hear belize is nice

      If it makes you feel any better, Rush talked about this yesterday I think. He is usually right….said he really does NOT think this will last & not worried at all – it was predictable it would happen — but it is NOT the issue that got his ratings down so low. It is the economy, jobs, etc. So…..this will blow over – we’ll probably find out more things that will discredit Obama about this (I don’t think he was the one to lead in this & was pushed into a corner by Panetta, etc. – if he didn’t do it, he wouldnt win re-election). People forget after awhile & will still be upset with him about the other important issues. Plus, many unexpected things happen until the election.

No one asks why, because Congress considers it “manifest bankruptcy”. OBL isnt interested in peace, or tolerance or money. he was interested in 2 things. destroying the western way of like and implimenting muslim domination. and 2 dying in the service of the first goal. akak becomming a martyr. thats nearly impossible to capture alive and you risk far more casualties as well as civillian ones if you tried. better to kill him and be done with it then make him a bargining chip.

    It would have been nice to get some intel from Osama. But would it be worth keeping him alive 10 or more years, and having him be a symbol to rally around. Even if given a trial, it would be viewed as corrupt. To shoot him in the face, in his home so unceremoniously, then dump him in the Arabian Sea is not only poetic (for us), but not as romantic (for lack of a better term) of an image for those who might be swayed into following such evil.

    Problem is the intel Osama had which only he could tell our intelligence agencies and due to politics Obama decided it was better to grease the guy. This way he could avoid the Gitmo issue, the interrogation issue, the lawyering him up right of the black hawk issue, the military or federal trial in New York issue, and finally the death sentance he would be handed down issue this is how elections are won in these peoples minds. I am all for killing this guy, but foresake all of the intel he could have given us especially right now after the immediate capture are there more cells in the US hell I would have liked the CIA and FBI to know these things.

    That’s because Bin Laden has been DEAD since 2001.

    Objective evidence that he was already dead:

    After December 13, 2001, his regularly intercepted messages stopped.

    On December 26, 2001, according to “a leading Pakistani newspaper” story, a prominent Taliban official said he attended his funeral.

    Bin Laden, in fact, was very ill with kidney disease. In September 2001, CBS News anchor Dan Rather reported that he was admitted to a Rawalpindi, Pakistan hospital on September 10, 2001, and France’s Le Figaro said:

    “Dubai….was the backdrop of a secret meeting between Osama bin Laden and the local CIA agent in July (2001). A partner of the administration of the American Hospital….claims that (bin Laden) stayed (there) between the 4th and 14th of July (and) received visits from many members of his family as well as prominent Saudis and Emiratis. (During the same period), the local CIA agent, known to many in Dubai, was seen taking (the hospital’s) main elevator (to) bin Laden’s room.”

    Why not if he was a valued asset.

    In July 2002, “CNN reported that (his) bodyguards had been captured in February of that year, adding: ‘Sources believe that if the bodyguards were captured away from bin Laden, it is likely the most wanted man in the world is dead.”

    Finally, despite Washington offering a $25 million reward for information leading to his capture or killing, no one came forward.

      Most likely to be the truth compared to the other stories circulating around that keep changing.
      If true then the guy who they killed was most likely a body double. Someone impersonating OBL for no other reason than to control the message coming out of AlQueda to keep the conflict on going.

      Or the guy they killed had the actual Kenyan birth certificate :).

    They reeally should get their stories straight before they add insult to more injury. They have said Osama was killed last week, that they tested his DNA against that of his relatives, that they immediately took him to the USS Carl Vinson, that Osama had an automatic handgun and fired it, that he was unarmed, that his wife was killed, that she was injured in the leg, and — oh, I don’t know — I’ve lost count of the different stories.

    I do remember hearing them say that the raid took place about a week ago because my birthday was a week ago, and I wondered the date that the raid took place.

    Then one of the Blazers who knows what he’s talking about mentioned that the helicopter that carried TWO crews out of the compound was seriously overloaded, plus they had one dead body, THEY CLAIM.

      The real reason BHO took out OBL is because he wouldn’t commit to his normal contribution for his 2012 campaign, he didn’t support Rahm in his bid, and did not accept his friend request, therefore BHO is behind Charlie Sheen and Lady Gaga See, you get on Barracks badside and he will just go off on you. When you get that mailer or that e-mail, just remember what Andy Stern said, ” We know where you work, we know where you live, and we know how you voted” Now he has Seal Team 6, and those friend requests aren’t requests anymore.

      Becks show today was hunt for something that wasnt there and in reality what played out is as stated above: they just wanted OBL dead. I can tell you if I was on that chopper and directive was to take OBL alive if possible Im looking at my team mates with that look on my face that I WILL put two in his head if he is in my sights regardless of orders.

      Beck is also a 24 fan he should know sometimes Jack Bauer had his man with all the answers only to lose him. Leaving Jack to have to save the day starting at zero. The risks were to high to take him alive with possible loss of US troops, the circus that would follow as to what to do with him, where he would be tried, like KSM etc, and worst off the attacks the US would be under. IMO if we took him alive there would be violence on US streets for his release and there is nothing DOJ, DHS, military etc could do to stop them.

      Yes he had vital info but I do not believe OBL knows the location of all cells, location(if they exist) of nukes etc. Thats standard operational security to protect those assets where only a handful know who to get in contact with to those in possession etc. Consider this they captured OBL and then waterboard him as to location of personnel ad weapons. That puts his objective at risk he wouldn’t compromise his own plans to know locations of personnel and weapons with the risk of capture and torture to give said locations up. He is a dead end on the larger operations of his terror network. What may be of value are the smaller connections they may have recovered in intel obtained in the raid. Another lead that will direct them to a larger one similar to how they got him.

      I thought the show was on target, although I disagree with Glenn about not showing the photo. Obum should have provided tangible proof of UBL’s death by now. As always the man procrastinates.

      Beck is right that Pakistan is a can of worms, and that this operation brought their corruption to the forefront. I say, better late than never. The situation in Pakistan is DIRE, but the MSM won’t report on it, because it would make the Peacebreaker look really bad.

      The only strange thing about the order to kill UBL is that it came from the SAME PEOPLE that were considering charging a Navy SEAL for giving a terrorist suspect a bloody lip.

      Something just doesn’t smell right here…….

      The only thing I can come up with that makes any sense here is that EVERY decision made by BHO is a political calculation with the objective being to keep throwing gasoline on the flames in the Middle East.

      the left screamed about waterboarding and torture being carried out on terrorists who thought nothing of beheading our captured soilders
      but they are praising HusseinO for killing Bin Laden. In fact in their minds , he has already won the 2012 election because of his intelligence and bravery
      If Bush had done this they would be saying how dare he kill an unarmed man in front of his wife and children , beat it like a dead horse round the clock and whip up symphany for the enemy

      It was imperative to kill UBL, among other things, so his PC and other intel could be freely seized. Actually, the grand prize from the govt.’s perspective was not the man, but his belongings. They are worth their weight in gold.

      Assassination was the correct call, whether used politically or not, it eliminated the threat and threats from bringing him alive…Good call..

      Everyone is amazed at Osama living in a compound 1000 yards or so from the West point of Pakistan….

      I say if you were Osama, would you live in a cave or small village in remote Pakistan where drones can watch you and blow you to pieces OR would you live real close to a base so that a drone can‘t attack you and more then likely can’t spy you….Using a Reaper on this compound was not an option, first because there is possibility for error of striking the Pakistani base and second the explosion would of been felt by the base thinking they were being attacked… just my thoughts…

      JOAN K —- I just looked this up —- WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I pray this is true and will come out on the national news!!!! All you guys — please go to this site!!! It explains what went down about this — about how Obama would not do anything, listened to Valerie Jarrett, who was adamantly against this — Panetta, Gates, Hillary were all pushing him and became totally frustrated — Gates almost went ahead and resigned now bc of it. Like many have suspected – confirms, if true, our thoughts that Obama isn’t really the one who made this call – he was “tricked into it” — didn’t even know about it that day when he was golfing!!!! Panetta is the one who did.

      To be honest Glenn, Scott, Pat, Stu and the rest of you, there is just to much to take in at this point. I have decided to wait a few days and start when all the facts become more clear. That does not mean that I will not be paying attention to the dopes out there. I just want the facts and nothing but the facts. It is my hope that I am not offending anyone.

      @JOANK : Holy freakin Cow! That interview you linked was astounding. I began reading it being very skeptical, but as it continued on, it absolutely rings true on every point. It also explains how it is the president gets pulled off the golf course, sitting there with his golf shirt and jacket as the mission unfolds. If he had been planning this raid for days in advance, knowing how incredibly important it was, would he decide to get in 9 holes just in time for it to begin? Knowing the WH photographer would be there, he would’ve been doing his best JFK Cuban Missile Crisis impersonation with suit and tie on, or sleeves rolled up and the jacket on the back of the chair and he would’ve been in the situation room long before the choppers were in the air.

      There is no way Obama would take him alive, even if he could have. What would he do with him? Put him in Gitmo? Trial in NYC? He has has turned his back on actually getting information from PoWs. And that is a shame. We should have brought him and his computers back, and dissasembled all as needed to gather data..THEN discard. You never kill an enemy commander if he can be reasonably captured and interrogated. That is if you are serious about winning a war.

      On a side note, I still wonder if this isn’t all a big head fake. I always thought Osama died shortly after we invaded afganistan. What real evidence do we have of his being alive over the ten years? I’ve never seen any videotape of him…just reports that the CIA “confirmed” some BS audio tape. And why would Bush tell us if he was dead? First it would make a martyr of him. Second, it would decrease US voters support of the war. And now the ultra fast burial at sea….hmmmm

      Very good read and info…As always verify but thank you for posting..

      VJ has always been an influence and so much so one could say she’s the “hillary” to Obama like Hillary was to Bill….

      With that said, it is saddening at the President’s lack of leadership, and while it may seem as a “short coup” by Panetta and others, they were acting in the best interest of our nation and simple up holding the oath they swore to…

      Upon reading this, I remembered the picture of the situation room..Hillary had pictures in front of her and two books on her lap with Gates beside her..Hillary was very concerned, and Gates kept his poker face…If you notice Biden is sitting in front of Obama with Obama sitting what looks to be in the back…Body language talks…Being President one would think he would sit in the commanding position or chair, not half behind the VP…I found that odd when first examining the pictures….Just my thoughts….

      Please all those who read the link by Joan K and verify the source forward to Scott Baker or any editor here at the Blaze in an effort to get them to post these remarks….

Bush took his eye off the ball and diverted American resources away from going after OBL (you know, like invading Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9-11, not mention having no WDM). Obama ran on the promise to go after OBL, and he got him. Get over it okay?

      JOAN, MOMPRAYN (who got me interested in the article) et al.:
      I believe this “insider” is telling the truth. For starters, unlike the official version, it is in line with Obum’s character. We all know Obama never takes risks and is incapable of making critical decisions. Many of us have expressed our firm conviction that our military/intel initiated this operation.

      Now all the pieces fall into place. Hussein HATES the CIA, so it comes as no surprise that he would listen to sis Val instead of Panetta, and make Panetta the fall guy if the mission failed. It also explains why Petraeus was unexpectedly sent back home.

      I have grown increasingly frustrated with all the stupid conservatives on TV who sing the high praises of Mr. Present for being “gutsy.” Obum is a despicable coward, and we all know it. This story explains a few other puzzling facts like why Obum seemed so aloof when he read his speech; why he looked so out of place in that photo that was circulated by his propaganda machine (kudos to 79USMC83 for hitting the nail on the head), and why his one and only concern post Operation Geronimo has been to appease the Muslim world.

      The surprise player in this story is Hillary. It wouldn’t be the first time she stood up to Obum on behalf of America, but some people desperately want her to run in 2012, so I’ll take that part of the story with a grain of salt. Regardless, I’m fed up with that Harvard hoax pretending he was in charge of the operation, when we all know it’s Bo who answers the 3 o’clock in the morning call.

      The American people can be fooled so easily……I don’t believe for a second that they would shoot and unarmed man who has more information about terrorist targets and groups than any other person on the planet. They faked the whole killing and burial right now Usama is at camp waterboard going through all the activities and being fed ham sandwiches daily.

      IMO Osama was most probably “retired” Known reports suggest he was living for the past several years in the House where he died . Pakistan says it told the US in 2009 he was there. Other reports say he was there perhaps as long as five years or more?There area is close to Military bases and has a high population of “retired”Pakistani Officers(much like here) Other that the seeming obligatory audio tapes commenting on currents events– I’ve seen no intel suggesting he was active in terrorist activity.post 9-11-01. He was unarmed. His aura/influence. was beginning to tarnish.
      There is no reason to doubt had this mission occured under President Bush the Democrats would have had him IMPEACHED for blatant disregard of US /and Military LAW prohibiting political assassination.As it is a Democrat in Office the Laws be damned. I’ve no regrets that he is dead– but
      find it unacceptable that Democrats too often violate all laws to secure their political goals But think it is “OK” for them to do what they would NOT allow any other do.

      It’s a controversial matter, but the way I see it, UBL was an enemy combatant killed in war — fair game. Libya is a different story. Qaddafi is a foreign leader/dictator and Hussein is trying to assassinate him for political reasons.
