Kim Jong-Il Forces North Korean Waitresses to Get Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

In a move that solidifies his position as the world’s heavyweight champion of all things slightly creepy, a recent report claims that all Kim Jong-il has demanded that all waitresses working in North Korean-owned restaurants outside of the country undergo double eyelid surgery.

From Daily NK (via Asia Times),

“’When I was in Pyongyang last year, I heard from someone related to the North that since the start of the 2000s all waitresses had double eyelid surgery on Kim Jong Il’s instructions,’ and added, ‘It seems that Kim Jong Il places great importance on the appearance of workers in restaurants earning foreign currency.’”

“Only the privileged classes are given the rare opportunities to go abroad, to work as diplomats, government-sponsored business representatives or study as college students,” reports Asia Times. However, “Many young females from the elite [most with college degrees] opt to work at these culinary outposts.” All are required to have the surgery performed.

This decree is slightly incongruous with another made by the petite dictator when he officially banned cosmetic surgery. But then again, not a lot of things done by Dear Leader makes much sense. Anyway, whether he made it necessary or not, the demand for the procedure is rapidly growing.

The surgery, which involves reshaping skin around the eye to create an upper eyelid with a crease, giving East Asian eyes a more Western appearance, was originally only available to wealthier Korean citizens but the practice is being demanded by all social classes.

(File report from 2007)

“Ethnically, about 78% of Koreans are born without double eyelids. In South Korea, double-eyelid surgery began to pick up in the 1960s as movie stars spearheaded the trend. They wanted to have ‘bigger eyes’ like their Western counterparts. Now, the trend is rapidly penetrating into Hermit Kingdom despite its isolation.”

There are differing views on how widespread the plastic surgery phenomenon is in other parts of North Korea outside the capital. A news report from 2006 claimed that in Chinese border town Shinuiju alone, more than 60% of the women had had work done. Most of the recipients of the surgery are young, college-aged women who must undergo the transformation before they go abroad.

Furthermore, a disturbing market trend indicates that North Korean surgeons are increasingly offering cosmetic surgery in return for bribes and other illicit goods. It should also be pointed out that this is all being done at a time when severe food shortages and economic distress has resulted in the United Nations sending aid for over three million starving Koreans.

But more than having disordered priorities, the trend also carries with it health implications. “Open Radio for North Korea,” a Seoul-based media outlet that collects news from informants inside the North, said the plastic surgery boom is spreading to rural areas, with unlicensed surgery often having less than desirable results.

One can only hope that this trend, as well as the dictator who encourages it, will soon go away.

If you know anything about Korea, this is not forced but more like the Nork version of winning the lottery. Very few women in South Korea haven’t had this done, and I’m guessing that these women in the North are excited to be given the opportunity. That doesn’t change that the amount and extent of plastic surgery in Korea is totally disgusting or that Kim Jong-ill (intentional spelling) is the most evil, brutal dictator in the world for whom execution would be too light of a punishment. It shouldn’t be strange that he both ban it in general and then mandate it for some. Like most socialists/communists/Marxists/leftists, he wants to control every aspect of the people’s lives. Sound familiar?

They keep saying that it makes the eyelid “bigger’ when the reverse is true. It makes it smaller by folding it more. It appears to be doubled when it is really just divided. When the eye is open the double fold makes the eyelid contract even more. Thus the eye looks bigger.

I know it’s a nitpicking point. But someone had to make it. I drew the short straw :-)

You’re exactly right. My dad has a false eye (lost at 15 in a motorcycle accident, and he’s now 79). His eye that was lost, the socket has shrunk, and looks bigger, because it’s like opening it further, because the lid has shrunk. I‘m not against this surgery if it’s voluntary, but to make someone go through it? That’s just wrong. I have a Down Syndrome son, and there was a fad for a while to do surgery on the eyes of those with Down syndrome so they didn‘t look so Down’s. I think that’s wrong, too.

Gee!….It seems like it was just yesterday that old Kim was telling the North Koreans what to eat and what not to eat. And what kind of car to drive. And making them use mercury filled light bulbs. And dictating what kind of medical care they could get. And how many badies they could have. And controlling their media. And over taxing them. And what religion is acceptable and which one is not. And redistributing their wealth, deciding who is wealthy and who is not.

They do this alot in South Korea. The eyelids and nose are the first things to go. They narrow and elongate the nose bridge and get the eye surgery above. Also, they stay out of the sun as to look white. Also, height is important.

Caucasian features are prized in asian cultures. Whether they can do anything about it or not depends on the Country. They could just skip all of this and marry a white guy/girl, but they usually don’t have that option. Hapa asians are alot more popular in modeling, acting, and other public profile professions in asian nations.

It may seem weird, but if everyone you met had squinty eyes, black hair, and was 5 feet tall, you’d want to be white too.

The only reason I was born a Caucasian, was because my father was a Caucasian, as was my mother. I really didn’t have any say as to what race I would be born into. That’s like any other person born on planet Earth.

My parents were never racists. They weren’t political at all. I really don’t believe that they ever voted. They were too busy living their lives. My father said that JFK would be assassinated, and he was right. I don’t know how he knew this. My father was a genius, but as I said before, was non-political.

My parents taught me to respect people for what they do. I lived through the Glenn Oaks debacle in Baltimore, MD. My parents taught me that it wrong to ban Black people from the Glenn Oaks amusement park.

This is just the North Korean version of Obamacare.

In the NK version, they tell you what you need and then you just reach into your own pocket to pay for it. In the US version of Obamacare, the government reaches into your pocket first, but you will still have to go pay for it yourself if you want it done in this lifetime.

The big difference is the reaching into the pocket part, but that gap will soon be closed when the US economy is indistinguishable from North Korea’s.

Are you for real? Their eyelids are not being removed, but reshaped to look more like a Caucasian woman’s eyelids. I assure you, they can still close their eyes after surgery.

Many Asians have a somewhat “flat” profile, as their faces go. There certainly isn’t anything “wrong” about this. It’s just an indication of what classification group that they are a member of.

There are variations in every classification. I am a Caucasian, but I can look like a Black person in the summer. I tan very easily, and have very full lips. My hair is very fine, wiry, and dry. If my hair gets wet, it’s an untameable mess of hairs going every which way, which only can be sorted out with a very wide tooth comb.

I’ve been mistaken for being a Black person, many times in my life. I take no offense at that. In the summer I look like a Black person, in the winter I look like a White person. It really hasn’t been a problem to me.

In fact, I consider myself to be extremely lucky. My skin is amazing. I’m almost sixty-three, but I barely have any wrinkles at all on my face. I don’t have any “crow’s feet” at my eyes. I’m often assumed to be ten years younger than I am. My skin just doesn’t wrinkle. It’s just weird.

Same reason why brunettes feel social pressure to dye their hair blond, why black women are told to “straighten” their hair with noxious chemicals, why women inject crap into their lips for a fuller look, and why people tan/bleach their skin.

A quip referring to the human consumption of dog meat. Wow! Obviously something that must be stamped out! O.K., you PETA-philes, now you will have to remove this one, too, I suppose. What’s next, burning Bibles because of Acts 10:9-18? Are secular taboos so important to the Thought Police? Seems so. These sorts of PETA-philes are the same ilk that outlawed horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. That law has caused real suffering to horses, has injured American horse owners and has hurt our balance of trade with Europe, Japan & Korea.
