Koch-Funded Study Changes Prominent Global Warming Skeptic to a Believer

(The Blaze/AP) A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.
The study of the world’s surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming disbelievers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of “Climategate,” a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.
Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.
He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades.
What’s different, and why everyone from opinion columnists to “The Daily Show” is paying attention is who is behind the study.
One-quarter of the $600,000 to do the research came from the Charles Koch Foundation, whose founder is a major funder of skeptic groups and the tea party. The Koch brothers, Charles and David, run a large privately held company involved in oil and other industries, producing sizable greenhouse gas emissions.
Muller’s research team carefully examined two chief criticisms by skeptics. One is that weather stations are unreliable; the other is that cities, which create heat islands, were skewing the temperature analysis.
“The skeptics raised valid points and everybody should have been a skeptic two years ago,” Muller said in a telephone interview. “And now we have confidence that the temperature rise that had previously been reported had been done without bias.”
Muller said that he came into the study “with a proper skepticism,“ something scientists ”should always have. I was somewhat bothered by the fact that there was not enough skepticism” before.
There is no reason now to be a skeptic about steadily increasing temperatures, Muller wrote recently in The Wall Street Journal’s editorial pages, a place friendly to skeptics. Muller did not address in his research the cause of global warming. The overwhelming majority of climate scientists say it’s man-made from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Nor did his study look at ocean warming, future warming and how much of a threat to mankind climate change might be.
Still, Muller said it makes sense to reduce the carbon dioxide created by fossil fuels.
“Greenhouse gases could have a disastrous impact on the world,” he said. Still, he contends that threat is not as proven as the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says it is.
On Monday, Muller was taking his results – four separate papers that are not yet published or peer-reviewed, but will be, he says – to a conference in Santa Fe, N.M., expected to include many prominent skeptics as well as mainstream scientists.
“Of course he’ll be welcome,” said Petr Chylek of Los Alamos National Lab, a noted skeptic and the conference organizer. “The purpose of our conference is to bring people with different views on climate together, so they can talk and clarify things.”
Shawn Lawrence Otto, author of the book “Fool Me Twice” that criticizes skeptics, said Muller should expect to be harshly treated by global warming disbelievers. “Now he’s considered a traitor. For the skeptic community, this isn’t about data or fact. It’s about team sports. He’s been traded to the Indians. He’s playing for the wrong team now.”
And that started on Sunday, when a British newspaper said one of Muller’s co-authors, Georgia Tech climate scientist Judith Curry, accused Muller of another Climategate-like scandal and trying to “hide the decline” of recent global temperatures.
The Associated Press contacted Curry on Sunday afternoon and she said in an email that Muller and colleagues “are not hiding any data or otherwise engaging in any scientifically questionable practice.”
The Muller “results unambiguously show an increase in surface temperature since 1960,” Curry wrote Sunday. She said she disagreed with Muller’s public relations efforts and some public comments from Muller about there no longer being a need for skepticism.
Muller‘s study found that skeptics’ concerns about poor weather station quality didn’t skew the results of his analysis because temperature increases rose similarly in reliable and unreliable weather stations. He also found that while there is an urban heat island effect making cities warmer, rural areas, which are more abundant, are warming, too.
Among many climate scientists, the reaction was somewhat of a yawn.
“After lots of work he found exactly what was already known and accepted in the climate community,” said Jerry North, a Texas A&M University atmospheric sciences professor who headed a National Academy of Sciences climate science review in 2006. “I am hoping their study will have a positive impact. But some folks will never change.”
Chris Field, a Carnegie Institution scientist who is chief author of an upcoming intergovernmental climate change report, said Muller’s study “may help the world’s citizens focus less on whether climate change is real and more on smart options for addressing it.”
Some of the most noted scientific skeptics are no longer saying the world isn’t warming. Instead, they question how much of it is man-made, view it as less a threat and argue it’s too expensive to do something about, Otto said.
Skeptical MIT scientist Richard Lindzen said it is a fact and nothing new that global average temperatures have been rising since 1950, as Muller shows. “It’s hard to see how any serious scientist (skeptical, denier or believer – frequently depending on the exact question) will view it otherwise,” he wrote in an email.
In a brief email statement, the Koch Foundation noted that Muller‘s team didn’t examine ocean temperature or the cause of warming and said it will continue to fund such research. “The project is ongoing and entering peer review, and we’re proud to support this strong, transparent research,” said foundation spokeswoman Tonya Mullins.

You really have to be completely ignorant about the Bible to not see that what is going on in the world today is written about in the Bible. According to the Bible, with respect to the time before Jesus’ return, Israel will be restored as a nation (check), Israel will be completely surrounded by enemies (check), Jerusalem will be a problem that no one can solve (check), the ancient Roman Empire will be revived in Europe (check), there will be a move for a one world government (check), there will wars and rumors of wars (check), the will be horrific natural disasters involving the oceans (check), there will terrible earthquakes around the globe (check), there will be famines (check), there will be a falling away of “Christian” apostates who preach false gospels (check), there will be an increase in Godlessness and the world be as wicked as it was in the times of Noah (check).
So, what does the Bible say about the sun in the last days?
“The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.” (Revelation 16:8-9)
This is not a good time to be on the fence about accepting Jesus

Everything happening today is designed to move us closer to that reality…..including the need for Obama to get another round of sledge-hammer destruction to our nation. A fully implemented Agenda 21 would allow no escape or revolution. game over.

Prof Curry is a distinguished climate researcher with more than 30 years experience and the second named co-author of the BEST project’s four research papers.
Her comments, in an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday, seem certain to ignite a furious academic row. She said this affair had to be compared to the notorious ‘Climategate’ scandal two years ago.”

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:37pmMan-made global warming is even affecting the polar ice caps on Mars. The carbon dioxide from our overuse of fossil fuels has been drifting through outer space and warming the atmosphere of Mars. The southern ice cap has been shrinking since 2007. The Martian ice cap is made out of frozen carbon dioxide. When the ice cap melts, more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Since there is such low gravity on Mars, the carbon dioxide drifts into outer space polluting other planets.
The NASA studies showed there is a cloud of vaporous hydrogen hydroxide that forms near the equator. This cloud reflects sunlight and holds heat closer to the surface of the planet. The reduced sunlight slows the growth of plants and the increased surface heat can cause severe weather, tornadoes and hurricanes. Reduced plant growth can lead to global starvation and the violent climate change could make life in the coastal area subject to destruction and flooding.
Vaporous hydrogen hydroxide should be added to the EPA’s list of deadly greenhouse gases before its too late.
Report Post »Lamarr01
Posted on October 31, 2011 at 5:31pmI am very disappointed in the readers of the BLAZE. My attempt at humor has fallen flat. Vaporous hydrogen hydroxide is commonly referred to as clouds. It’s as ridiculous to have the EPA regulate clouds as it is to regulate (and tax) carbon dioxide.
The polar ice cap on Mars has been shrinking. Mars has a very thin atmosphere so atmospheric temperature is not the cause of this shrinking. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared radiation (heat) in a narrow range of frequencies. Apparently, there has been an increase in infrared radiation in this frequency.
The sun is the likely source of this radiation. There are two satellites orbiting the sun recording the emissions of electromagnetic radiation (light and heat) and particles. There is another satellite orbiting the Earth that is recording the temperature of the atmosphere, amount of carbon dioxide and transmission of infrared radiation into space.
These satellites have recorded actual data and the man-made global warming model doesn’t produce the correct predictions. The global warming “scientists” will need to reprogram their models and modify their theory.

This article doesn’t even come any closer one way or the other to answering the question. Most scientists I‘m aware of know all about the earths cycles but taking the UN’s own climate numbers and doing the math we would need ZERO carbon output for like 50 years to possibly change the climate one degree. The real question is who pays for all this climate change mania. This story was reported today in the Daily Mail and Canada Free Press, yet has somehow been buried. I certainly hope The Blaze isn‘t aiding the press in it’s cover up…

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 5:12pmAnd…..man is responsible for it? The temp rises and falls, we find fossils of sea creatures on the property where my house is built and we are 300 miles from the coast and it is not due to a fault moving the land. Oh! how did that happen? Climate change is a fact, whether man is responsible or can do or should do anything to change “mother nature” is the issue.

Report Post »Just a little elitism showing here. People without advanced degrees in climatology can know that the climate has warmed and cooled, at least as much as at present, several times in the past 5000 years (and earlier). The only questions here are:
Has the recent warming been due to man’s contribution to greenhouse gasses?
Is the increase in CO2 necessarily bad since it appears to increase the agricultural productivity of marginal land?.
Will the temperature increase continue or are there negative feedbacks that will reverse the trend?
There are other questions, but these pop into mind right now.

Report Post »Tradition Dies Here
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 5:17pmOne again, a basic misunderstanding of the nature of science on the blaze board. Science is never ultimately settled, and what is largely regarded as established fact, is still always being analyzed and tested.
Report Post »Glenn in Virginia
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 5:27pmThe “settled science” once was that the Earth is flat and that the Sun, Moon, stars and everything else revolve around the Earth.
Report Post »Tradition Dies Here
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 6:09pmNo, the notion that the earth was flat was not a scientific one. It was actually promoted and allowed to thrive during the Dark Ages as a result of the repression of knowledge by the Church, The Ancient Greeks, long preceding the Dark Ages, came to the conclusion that the earth was in fact round. Also, most learned individuals during the early renaissance also knew the earth wasn’t flat. The idea that the earth is not the center of the universe, and that the earth is round stems from science, and the attempts to quell this knowledge, religion.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:10pmWe see your true colors…..COWARD LIVES HERE. I understand, darling…..it must be so difficult to defend the obvious hypocrisy.
Here’s the thing….you are smart, you are a thinking person. What is the agenda? Why do they want to push lies on people? Follow the cap and trade money initiative, sweet thing If you are right and we are wrong, what will money (via cap and trade) really do for the situation? And, even if you honestly believe politicians would spend it wisely, what impact do you really think humans would have….notably if only a tiny segment agreed to be taxed? Question more than the talking points. You are truly better than that.
Report Post »Tradition Dies Here
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:13pmWrong again. Over 98% of scientists in RELEVANT fields accept that the earth is warming, and it is largely due to human actions. Many of the scientists who signed the petition do no work in the field of the earth sciences, and consist of engineers etc. In fact, over 89,000 scientists REFUSED to sign the petition.

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:23pmYou have yet to answer one of my questions. How can you possibly know that man causes global warming with our industry over a mere 100 years if the planet has been around for billions of years? How did we have an Ice Age? How were there oceans in the desert? Even if the earth is in a cooling cycle for whatever reason, how can you possibly think man has anything to do with it? Think! Well, unless you are currently paid or the prof is giving credit for posts that tote the agenda. In which case, your further arguments will be forgiven.
Can you say “pwned”?

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:32pmP.S. Really, REALLY, bad sourcing, darling, which absolutely does not help your case. Nice try though. I’m just asking you to think for your very own self. Think about who is pushing the agenda. Think about WHY they are pushing it. Think about the failed science already proven. Think about what you know to be true from history and science. Do you really think that cars and plastic bags are going to ruin the planet? In a mere 100 or so years since the Industrial Revolution. Please tell me you are not that indoctrinated and naive.
Report Post »copatriots
Posted on October 30, 2011 at 7:42pmAnd Darling, if, IF, you are correct and 89,000 refused to sign…..why do you think that is? Did you go to university? Do you know that grant money came from the government for those who supported global warming? 89,000 potentially “refusing” to sign only means they were 1) didn’t want the gravy train check to end or 2) weren‘t sure what side of this to actually take because they didn’t know any better. I do not disagree we should be good stewards of the earth. Liberals took something good and turned it into an agenda to make you feel guilty, love “mother earth” and tax you more. You are so obviously smarter than believing the standard hype. Hugs! And out for now.
