Krugman: America Isn’t About Competition

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” New York Times columnist and economist Paul Krugman said the president’s apparent shift to the center recently is “kinda sad” and went on to say that America is not about competition.
The comment came as host Christiane Amanpour brought up the recent appointment of GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt as the chair of the White House’s new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. That, coupled with some apparent pro-business decisions recently, led to the topic of the president’s “shift” and a discussion of competition (the foundation of business and capitalism). When Amanpour said competition was about as American as apple pie (paraphrase) Krugman couldn’t have disagreed more.
The discussion takes up the first two minutes below:
Regarding the president becoming “pro-business,” we noted last week that the president‘s regulation executive order wasn’t as groundbreaking as some initially thought. So with that said, Krugman’s statement that the president appearing pro-business could just be another way to dress up and “sell” more public investment might be the most accurate of his comments.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 8:48amLife is about competition, you pathetic moron. You progressive twits always espouse survival of the fittest and evolution, but then fail to apply it to everyday life. Life is competition for food, resources, space, etc. If we don’t compete we are overtaken by another person for our job, another country for our land, another species for primacy. When you fail to compete in some way or other, you fail to be of significance. You obviously don’t want to compete…so you are insignificant…and should be immediately replaced by someone who will. Welcome to evolution!

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 12:09pmKrugman didn’t say he is against competition, nor that America is not about competition. He is saying that the US government doesn‘t operate and shouldn’t operate like a private corporation. Just because the journalists and pundits on the show are framing things the wrong way doesn‘t mean that you should put words into Krugman’s mouth.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 8:48amNot one policy from this president or his minions has done anything to help business or the people.
They have done nothing more than create regulations that are taking away jobs and pushing prices up.
I can only assume that this is what they want.
I am afraid that competition went out with freedom!

Do you think that they will allow you to spout propaganda like this? “First we will take Eastern Europe, then the masses of Asia. We will encircle the last bastion of capitalism, the United States of America. We will not need to fight. It will fall as a ripe fruit into our hands.” (Vladimir Ilyich Lenin) Remember history and you will not repeat it. Just ask the Trotskyites in Russia, they and the Bolsheviks have been in power since the first world war. Mr Krugman, you are just another Trotskyite shill.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 8:36amI think that for once Krugman is right (even a blind squirrel finds a acorn every now and then). I believe that Obama is going to come up with another “stimulus” plan like that last 1 trillion dollar boondoggle, although this time it is going to be called an “investment” and emphasize jobs. If he gets his way one thing that you can be sure of is that the unions will get a big chunk of it. If he is serious what doesn’t he cancel his executive directive that all public projects that get Federal dollars must use union workers. The unions represent only 1 in 7 workers but all jobs the get Federal funds must use them? This is another huge pay off for the unions in preparation for the 2012 elections. The government takes money from us, gives it to the unions, and the unions donate hundreds of millions to the campaign coffers of Democrats. It’s a scam and we are going to pay for it.

You are diving into the cement pond! To give Krugman credit for finding a nut with blind telepathy is just plain foolish and giving this squirrel too much confidence. His comments regarding the “dispensing of competition” should be a wake up call. HE IS A PROGRESSIVE. Clear and simple, To Krugman, you are a working class, tax paying village serf who does not know the clear meaning of Capitalism. Yes, “the little people.”
Krugman’s (and other Progressives) use of the word “investment” will be the new viral term replacing “pivot” in weeks to come. I will try to count the number of times POTUS says “investment” in his State of the Union address.
Although, I can see where you connect the dots to “Investment and Union Contracts”, I would like to think that the newly elected Tea Party House of Representatives will hopefully stem the tide of corrupt Union politics as usual. We will have to wait and see.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 8:34amThe American dream has always supported competition and striving to be better. It is Communism where every one (supposedly) is equal and there is no need to strive for more (because you are not allowed to have more than your handout). Posted on January 24, 2011 at 11:40amI had to close my company last year because of absurd rules and regulations enacted by the Obama administration. The guy next door to me had to do the same thing, different business, all new rules. The Constitution speaks of “regulate commerce” meaning “to make regular” NOT placing regulations to slow or halt commerce. Why do corporations ship jobs overseas? Cheaper labor, cheaper tariffs = over regulation. Basic example, seat belt laws. Essentially unconstitutional. The Constitution gives me the right to be stupid! The first American car to come standard with seat belts was the ‘64 1/2 Mustang, and that was window dressing to make it more “racer” style car, it was nothing more than a re-skinned Ford Falcon with a small V-8 or straight 6. Now seat belts, air bags and alll other sorts of Gov’t regulations have followed, do they make driving safer? Yes, at what cost? Mexican radiators, Chinese dash boards and seat belts made in Korea! Keep them regulations coming folks, we have to be on an even playing field!

I’m an aspiring real estate investor, and it is nearly impossible to obtain rental property unless you have a mountain of money. In their attempt to “protect” the American people from bad investing, the new limitations have actually created a situation where it will no longer be profitable or even possible for the “little guy” to enter. It was only out of shear stubbornness and probably blind stupidity that I was able to buy my first home, which I promptly hired several crews to repair, took an abandoned home off the foreclosure market, and improved the property values of that house and its neighbors. Unfortunately, the knee jerk reaction from govn’t is to simply make it harder and harder to get into the business, which means, as the Dems claim to hate, the “rich get richer while the poor get poorer”. I swear, most libs don’t understand the concept of “unintended consequences.” Not only that, but my accountant just informed me that I now will be required to give a 1099 to ANYONE that I pay over $600 to, causing me more paperwork, time, and useless bureaucracy.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 10:32amDid you not understand his basic premise?
It was NOT that competition has no place in the existing hybrid capitalistic system – it is that within the CURRENT MACROECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT there isn’t the aggregate demand needed within many industries to spur large-scale capital investment. He isn’t commenting on individual businesses or the local grocery stores – obviously there is, and will always be, a base level of competition. What is keeping us from going forward is the reticence,
To his point, why would you invest in building another factory if you can’t keep the one you have running at full capacity?
Look at it this way, if you run a huge company, you have been laying off workers – while at the same time making excellent profits. If your factory is only running at 80% capacity, the driving factor is NOT that your market share has decreased, it is scaling down your business while still reaping profits. He isn’t professing socialism with that statement, he is simply saying that, in this environment, competition isn’t the main current driving factor in investment – it’s the output gap best manifested as high unemployment.

Posted on January 24, 2011 at 12:05pmKrugman did NOT mean to say that America isn’t about competition. He is saying that the American GOVERNMENT is not about competition. It is about addressing market failure and focusing on things that are valued by society that companies do not care about, like moving toward full employment, like having social goods like public education and clean air or water. And he deftly points out that US corporations were not holding back on investment because Obama was anti-business, but because there is not enough demand to justify putting the $2T to work in US-based capital investment projects, so unemployment will remain a problem for a long while. The problem is that the other guests are not economists and talk about things from a political perspective (e.g., Dowd talking a lot about symbols, Will talking about how the public ended up blaming government for the failings and mistakes of private Wall Street banks), which is to say that they DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. It is very sad to me that those who understand the problems say nothing, while those who know little speak so much. The problems with the US economy should have been addressed by top tier economists, who were overwhelmingly in favor of much larger stimulus, rather than know-nothing politicians who wanted to simply take advantage of problems or ignore them to benefit in short-term election cycles. This is the problem with America’s democracy. It is too short-term, and driven by people who do not know what they are talking (or voting) about. China’s dictatorship, while in the long-run a far inferior form of government to ours, is making us look like a bunch of incompetent fools. And you understand why when you listen to discussions like this–not to mention the misleading headlines on blogs like this one.
