Krugman ‘Crucified’ Over 9/11 ‘Occasion For Shame’ Remarks

On Sunday, The Blaze covered New York Times‘ columnist Paul Krugman’s choice to use the September 11 attacks as an opportunity to criticize former President George W. Bush and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, among others.
Unlike Krugman, we allowed our readers to share their comments with us. So far, there are nearly 900 responses (you can read them here). In addition to spawning a grand response from Blaze readers, his words have triggered some sharp reaction from conservative and liberal commentators, alike.
Village Voice writer Nick Greene compared Krugman’s post to “an angst-riddled teenager’s Facebook status update,” rather than a legitimate piece from a New York Times columnist. And this was one of the more complimentary criticisms.
To refresh your memory, here are some of the highlights from Krugman’s 9/11 post:
Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons. [...]
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
A number of prominent conservatives are enraged by these words. Commentator Michelle Malkin wrote:
…it is worth calling out the smug coward who flung his op-ed crap against the wall and then deliberately turned off his comments section to avoid any heat in the Times’ kitchen. [...]
Koward Krugman’s problem is that he’s a lazy intellectual slob who hurriedly hits the “publish” button before the sand in his little kitchen egg timer empties.
Glenn Reynolds of InstaPundit.com, echos Malkin’s sentiments, writing the following about Krugman and his 9/11 statements:
Understand it for what it is, an admission of impotence from a sad and irrelevant little man. Things haven’t gone the way he wanted lately, his messiah has feet of clay — hell, forget the “feet” part, the clay goes at least waist-high — and it seems likely he’ll have even less reason to like the coming decade than the last, and he’ll certainly have even less influence than he’s had.
Even former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld got in on the controversy, Tweeting that he has cancelled his subscription to the New York Times over the “repugnant piece.”:
Liberals, though, like Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald, defended Krugman’s controversial views. Greenwald Tweeted the following message out, comparing the ridicule Krugman is facing to past criticisms that have befell Michael Moore and The Dixie Chicks:
Of course, Greenwald isn’t alone. Crooks and Liars’ Nicole Belle wrote the following defense of Krugman:
But is Krugman wrong? Yes, almost 3,000 people died that day, needlessly, horribly. But that day was the impetus for us to attack and invade Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with the attacks and posed no threat to us. To date, we’ve lost 4,752 allied service members in Iraq and over 100,000 Iraqi civilians. How is this not a black mark of shame on the legacy of 9/11?
With individuals like Krugman and Berkley professor Tom Engelhardt railing so heavily against America, response is likely to continue to come out heavily from the right.
At the same time, liberals who are sympathetic to the view that the American government exploited the attacks for the nation’s gain, will continue to come to Krugman’s defense.

They have had full control to implement their view of what an anti-capitalist Utopia should be with no interference from the tea party or republicans. Just take a look and see what their policies lead to. Sky high crime, Minorities living in third world conditions, companies that leave or go bankrupt, and in the end all of them that created the situation trying to blame it on the potato farmers in Idaho or any other group.

Shouldnt this be the final nail in his coffin of credibility for the lefty loons? Surely they cannot agree with him and see how insane he is from this to his ideas that spending money we dont have will fix our economy. As Glenn says he is a weasel but I think labeling him that is too nice… he is what I like to call a piece of gum! Yes thats right you read it right a piece of gum. On a serious note I think its about time somehow someway we restart the HUAC hearings. Its time to route these anti-Americans out of their holes. Why hasnt someone directly confronted people like Krugman and asked “why are you still in America?“ ”why dont you leave since you hate it so much and move to a country that you approve of their political and financial system?” Why arent they confronted head on and their bluff called to leave this nation since its so bad?! Krugman is an idiot. But you’re not exactly accurate with the amount of return from Becks urging of people to invest in gold. I started out 3 years ago when Glenn first mentioned it on radio, and my portfolio has increased 242%. I used the return to invest in nothing but physical gold and smile daily when I realize just how right Beck has been about every subject he’s broached (with the exception of Ayn Rand, who wrote a cute book, but lived a life anti-American and entitled).

I must assume that the NYT editors thought it worthy of printing on the tenth anniversary of 3000 innocent people being murdered in NYC. This was one of the few times when every American, save Krugman apparently, put differences aside and pulled together to do what was necessary to recover.
Donald Rumsfeld should not be the only person to cancel their subscription to this “repugnant” paper.

The ability to have a dissenting and outlandish opinion and the ability to voice it is what makes our country great (and frustrating) at the same time. It would have been nice for him and others who posited similar views to have saved it for a day other than the 10 yr anniversary of the 9/11 atrocity. It is the journalistic equivalent of pouring salt on an open wound and both the victims and the survivors alike deserve better.

Otherwise we might think they agree with the rest of us who see this as a day of mourning and remembrance. He’s obligated to take a contrary position. The thought of their intellectualism far out-reaching the rest of us normal folk just seems, in their mind, to give them the license to attempt to “change our history, change our traditions, and change our conversations.” Somehow, regardless of how far from reason their statements may be rooted, they somehow think that they can actually persuade the public to jump off of the same bridge in which they are headed. I propose that the public begin to boycott Paul Krugman not only for his arrogant dexterity but for his misguided Keynesian ideology that has continued to influence public policy and take this country in the wrong direction. We should not be giving Nobel prizes to people that think that continual public deficit spending is the solution to shrinking the deficit. Oh, have I said too much?;);)

I am realizing more and more frequently that today bad behavior is a substitute for having something to say. I suppose it morphs from the Democratic policy of using emotions and opinion for debates rather than facts and policy. It always upsets Dems when some conservative argues a point with facts & figures and leaves the Dem in the wind. Late night would-be comedians also need attention so they behave badly. I guess it is all this REALITY TV which I don‘t watch and wouldn’t be bothered …but now people seem to think if they can garner attention by behaving inappropriately… that’s all that matters. Personally, I see so few journalists and media types that I admire today… it’s very sad. Do you know that millions of Americans never knew Walter Cronkite was a devout liberal/leftie? Because he didn’t push an agenda while reading the news. I can admire a man like that! Now.. all I get is someone’ agenda… which is why Law & Order is in the toilet. When Jerry Orbach died… there went the show… because the writer/creator is more interested in his Left agenda than writing good shows. He’s a sad, pathetic man who has been getting hammered for his views of late. What amazes me is that the NYT keeps him on the payroll. If I had a subscription, Mr. Rumsfeld, I would cancel it too. But I don’t. If I ever did, it would have been canceled long ago. The NYT is an increasingly irrelevant enterprise with each passing day.

And you believe anything out of Krugmans mouth? Krugman is the same guy that thinks government spending creates consumer demand and consumer demand creates jobs. To claim that government spending creates jobs is absolutely insane. In order to pump government spending into the economy, the government must first take it out of the economy. The capital they’re giving to consumers and businesses they’re taking from consumers and businesses to give them. That’s like taking ten dollars out of your wallet, putting eight dollars back in and claiming you made eight dollars. Liberals have no common sense and I see you and Krugman share that trait.
