L.A. Schools Ban Flavored Milk to Curb Child Obesity

L.A. Schools Ban Flavored Milk to Curb Child ObesityLOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Unified on Tuesday became the nation’s largest school district to stop serving flavored milk in a move to combat child obesity.

The school board voted to eliminate chocolate and strawberry milk from schools as of July 1.

LAUSD joins a growing number of school districts nationwide, including District of Columbia, Boulder Valley, Colo., and Berkeley, Calif., that serve only plain milk because of the added sugar contained in flavored versions.

The proposal by Superintendent John Deasy came after popular British TV chef Jamie Oliver criticized the district in recent months for serving flavored milks, saying they contain the sugar equivalent of a candy bar.

In one TV stunt, he filled a school bus with sand to represent the amount of added sugar LAUSD students consume in a year through flavored milk.

Some board members were rankled by the perception that the district was caving in to Oliver, who unsuccessfully lobbied the district to be allowed to tape shows in local schools.

“I really don‘t understand why we’re letting a TV chef dictate our policy,” said board member Tamar Galatzan, who noted that many health advocates including the American Heart Association say the nutritional benefits of flavored milk outweigh the harm of added sugar.

Some advocates say that milk consumption drops when children are not offered the option of chocolate and other flavored milks.

She noted the district serves fruit juices containing 27 to 29 grams of sugar per serving, more than the amount of sugar in flavored milk — 20 grams in eight ounces of fat-free chocolate milk and 27 grams in fat-free strawberry.

Galatzan was the lone dissenter on the board.

The move was applauded by several proponents in the audience.

“Thirty percent of our kids are obese or are on track to diabetes,” said Jennie Cook of Food for Lunch, a coalition advocating nutritious school food, who has been pushing the district to eliminate flavored milk for the past year. “This is a social justice issue.”

Emily Ventura, a researcher with the University of Southern California’s Childhood Research Center, noted that a number of experts did not recommend flavored milk as a healthy choice. She said 6,000 LAUSD parents had signed a petition to eliminate flavored milk from the district.

Some school districts have opted for a middle road, using natural sweeteners like cane sugar, beet sugar and Truvia to sweeten milks instead of high-fructose corn syrup based flavorings.

But others say children should learn to drink plain milk.

LAUSD is the nation’s second-largest school district with about 688,000 students.

If children aren’t fed the junk food at home, they won’t choose to eat it at school. Feeding children french fries, ice cream, cookies and other junk food at home is a sin against God. Nobody likes to admit it but it is.

We don’t want government teaching our children immoral things in the classroom. Similarly, we don’t want government feeding our children food that is not honoring God. Sure, we can argue over a little sugar here and there, but we all know that a lot of fried foods, ice cream, cookies, mcdonalds and other junk food is not honoring our temple.

Teach the children to make the right choices and hold the public schools to a high standard.

Ok this is really getting beyond ridiculous, seriously! The only milk I would drink while going through school was chocolate because I just didn’t care for the regular. I also ate most of the food that they served which was not totally the healthiest but our bellies were full and if we didn’t want or could not afford the school lunch then we brought a brown bag. Now here is the rub, when I was in school through all grades we had a Physical Education course which was not elective and from the time I would leave school for the day I was out kicking it with friends most of the time we were riding bikes or playing football or basketball or baseball etc… Most of my entire life I have never eaten 100% healthy and today at 42 years of age I am still fairly lean weighing in at 175 +- at 5′7″. My point, its not the food stupid! Most kids, barring those with problems predisposing them to weight gain, are getting fatter because they are less active then when I was a kid. The groups that push this Nazi BS really do not have a clue and even when they do get a clue if it does not fit their Nazi agenda they ignore it and those pesky little facts as well. So what we have here is a minority group pushing their Nazi BS on the majority and a majority of that majority without a set to stand up tall and look those Nazi pukes in the eye and tell them to sit down and shut up because they have no idea what the heck they are talking about!

Here we go again – the government ramming “virtue” down our throats. I grew up drinking chocolate milk most of the time with my school lunch, and I am drinking plain milk most of the time with flavored milks for variety. And the government did not one thing to “teach” me to do it all.

Illiberals: Back off with the “nanny-state”! We don’t need it or want it!:

Liberals (those by that name who remember the relationship between “liberal” and “liberty”): Go get the milk flavor of your choice, and flaunt it!

I‘m sorry didn’t you see the whole communist thing when the government offered “free lunches”? I went to a school where I ate a packed lunch that MY parents paid for. And I grew up poor. If the government provides it then they can change it any way they want. If you ask them for milk they can give you any kind of milk they want. And they’ll make some other guy pay for it

Nothing wrong with Sugar, it’s natural and you can digest it and burn it off with exercise.

High Fructose Corn Syrup on the other hand, is a serious problem. You can call it the FDA’s legalized “Liquid Crack”. You can’t burn it off easily like sugar, therefore, your body retains it. Plus, there are indications that the stuff is addictive. They’ve done the studies to prove it, and the FDA ignored them all saying not enough evidence to support the findings.

    Bunch of morons!!!

Drinking milk is more important than the added sugar or fat content- especially in small amounts. It is way more important that a child get their calcium during their developmental years since bone structure and growth is vital at the younger age. I mention this because I never could drink milk, and I still don’t, but chocolate milk actually made it palatable and I was able to get some nutrition from it. Milk is much more than just fat and sugar and the overall benefit, even at the cost of more sugar, far outweighs the damage. In fact, I bet that if this stupidity continues, you will see health issues with more kids due to reduced consumption of milk. Sadly, the health issues aren’t something that are noticeable. They would be mild, but negatively affect the child’s growth/health.

    Morons!

Your Mom breast feed you chocolate milk?

Kids eat junk in school because parents feed it at home. Personal responsibility is taught at the dinner table. If parents fulfill that role, it doesn’t matter what schools serve because kids will learn how to make the right choices. When parents fail to teach responsible eating, it falls to the public schools. Our body is our temple and teaching a child to respect what goes in his body is part of teaching a child to respect God’s gift. Please do your job at home and stop complaining about schools picking up your slack.

No I couldn’t drink milk- tastes awful, but chocolate milk made it easier to drink and get the necessary nutrients. School isn‘t picking up my slack because it’s not their business. They forced their way on us by forcing public schools. They forced lunch on us even though all didn’t agree. Everyone still pays for it, and if they can’t provide (which they never will be able to) then they should restrain themselves and let parents handle their own business.

Chicago is a perfect example of the government forcing their way on the people, and yet people like you would accuse the family rather than the over-reaching government. Kids in Chicago, as of a few weeks ago, can no longer bring their own lunch- meaning that the parents health choices are now irrelevant. What I eat, or you or your kids eat is no one’s business but your own, unless the government forces a choice upon you, like it has here.

One of the things that I heard was that a parent came to our local BOE meeting and said that her child was on a very restricted diet and the doctors were puzzled because the child’s metabolic readings were increasing rather than decreasing. After some investigation, she found out that the school was providing breakfast, a mid morning snack and lunch for the students. Her child, an obedient kid if there ever was one, was told by the teacher to eat the food provide, which the child did. This was in addition to the breakfast the child had at home and the child was not eating the special dietary lunch that was provide by the mother. The child ended up being pulled out of school for a week in order to get the metabolic numbers back to where they were safe again. The school said that every student had to eat so that the kids who were on the breakfast program wouldn’t feel singled out. So, it’s not just the chocolate milk, but the school meals program overall that has to be considered.

I don’t get this story. Anyone who has looked at the milk– white homogenized milk– issue for more than about thirty seconds knows that it is a widespread cause of allergies and health problems in children and adults. As we have seen in recent stories non-homogenized (natural) milk is practically an illegal substance. Who is behind keeping this stuff in the schools in the first place? (I dunno, is there such a thing as a Dairy Lobby? Sounds so wholesome!)

And what does anyone expect? Were talking SCHOOLS here. You know, where people drop their kids off– with barely a question or worry– to spend six or seven hours being educated. If parents don’t have the right to send their kids to school with a sack lunch in these districts– then that’s a different story.

High fructose corn syrup and white sugar (yes, Blaze, that means cane sugar and beet sugar) cause many health problems. Pasteurized homogenized milk causes many health problems. Can’t blame schools for being educated… give these to your kids at home or make your own lunches.

You get one or two teachers monitoring an entire cafeteria, or more likely an instructional assistant, and the parents aren’t there at all to monitor what the kids are eating. I’ve seen kids take their lunch money and buy ice cream instead. Or consume nothing but the chocolate milk. If they didn”t have the option for the chocolate milk, they’ll fill up on something, preferably something better. In all my years teaching I‘ve ever only known one kid who didn’t eat any lunch at all.

On a side note, I’m all for offering the option of almond or rice milk. Once I cut dairy out of my diet, virtually all my allergies went away, including the life-threatening asthma.

And, yes, poor people are more likely to be obese. I don‘t know why that’s so… but they did a news story here a couple months back on this wonderful program to feed “hungry families” and every single person in the line getting food was just huge. The irony seemed to be lost on those doing the story.

No it couldnt be that its FREE. If they have to pay for it themselves and not get it via school lunch welfare, they wont drink it. Welfare makes people fat because they dont have to WORK to earn the money to pay for it. Stop school subsidies and see those fat welfare state kids get slim.

BTW soy milk is dumb to drink. Do the research to what it does to a womans hormones and a young mans testicles. Soy milk is the liberal idiocy run amok.

You know what I’ve noticed? The more that the schools interfere with our kids eating habits… the fatter they become.

It ain’t the milk. I got chocolate milk in basic military training and lost 22 pounds. If these kids were doing calisthenics every other day, they wouldn’t be fat. The key is exercise, which is something that has to be taken care of (gasp) in the HOME!!!

      Welcome to the police state!

This is why it is important to keep note of people who support things like the Patriot Act. Once the government is allowed to chip away at your Liberty, expect them to do more.

Sure, milk does not seem so bad now, but If we stand around and watch and say nothing, it will be much worse than just milk.

This is getting beyond ridiculous . . . The slow creep of Communism is at America’s doors and is about to get in thanks to the Progressive idiots who need to mind their own business and stop this collective nonsense . . .

Being lactose intolerant, it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other, since any kind of milk will make me ill. However, our local District tried to ban sugar two years ago. What a mess. The kids were reduced to drinking water or milk, since as someone pointed out earlier in a post that fruit juice contains fruitose, another form of sugar. The cookies tasted like cardboard and the kids were smuggling candy bars and Ring Dings in their lunches. For some reason, peanut butter and bananas wasn’t quite as popular as peanut butter and jelly. Things got really ugly when the PTO found out that they couldn’t have their annual bake sale or sell frozen cookie dough for fund raisers. Imagine the child (and this actually happened in a town nearby) sitting in a police station because he got busted for selling a candy bar to a classmate at school. I’m all for healthy eating, but training kids to eat the right things takes time. Most of the premixed milk and flavoring is too sweet, so if they just reduced amount of the flavoring, it would probably have a major impact without the riot.

Hey, here’s an idea , why not just ban ALL food and drinks in public schools ? wouldn’t that take care of ALL the problems ? Sheesh !!! I bet Michelle Ofatgril is behind this..

I wonder how long before they figure out it’s really video games which are the problem and ban them. Flavored milk has been around for decades, and now all of the sudden it’s the problem? Get your chubby ass off the xBox and go ride your bike.

Kids are supposed to be chubby! What in the world is going on? It’s called baby fat, people! I suppose people on the left were never children. They just burst, full grown, from some alien body-snatcher-esque pod.

Hmm…that actually makes a lot of sense.

That’s racist!! You can’t single out the colored milk, and keep the white milk only!!
      —————————–

To be fair, they’re wiping out all of the red milks in order for white milk to completely dominate the land. So you should be happy. :)

Poor kids are more likely to be overweight because of all the sugar they eat.

Eliminating chocolate and strawberry milk from school menus is A Good Thing.

foobear, the poor kids would be better off getting more exercise. They would get more if the schools weren’t so PC as ban physical activities like tag and dodge ball. We can thank greedy lawyers always looking to make a quick buck and progressive schools. Sugary drinks have been around longer than that non-sense. We don’t need anymore overly intrusive government.
