Labor Sec. Honors Union Hero Cesar Chavez, Renames Auditorium After Him

Labor Sec. Honors Union Hero Cesar Chavez, Renames Auditorium After HimLeft to right: Labor Secretary Hilda Solis & César Chávez

First it was a cargo ship, now it’s an auditorium: “The one labor socialist many Americans love, United Farm Workers [UFW] co-founder César Chávez, finally has some real estate in Washington thanks to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’ move Monday to name the department’s auditorium after the famous produce picker,” the Washington Examiner reports.

After being personally trained by the infamous community organizer Saul Alinsky, Chávez co-founded the UFW with Democratic Socialists of America honorary co-chair Dolores Huerta to “fight for fair wages for migrant workers.”

A side note:  Blaze readers may remember Dolores Huerta from a story we did in 2010 when she was caught on tape praising Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez in front of a high school audience.

“Today, we celebrate one of America’s most powerful stories of courage and victory. The farm worker movement was begun by people who didn’t have money or clout. Many were new to this country and lived season to season,” Solis said before an audience that included Huerta.

“They were hard-working people of the land who asked only for dignity and fair treatment, and today we are proud to give them the Department of Labor’s highest honor.”

She continued:

I want to honor a trailblazer who was there from the very beginning. She’s a luchadora who endured arrests, death threats and beatings — a fearless woman who had her bones broken in the struggle but never her spirit. I’m proud to call her my teacher, my role model, and mi hermana. Brothers and sisters, let’s show our appreciation for one of the living legends of the farm worker movement, Dolores Huerta.

“Dolores worked mano a mano with one of the most celebrated icons of the American civil rights movement: the great César Estrada Chávez, who was inducted into our Hall of Honor in 1998,” Solis added.

Solis, along with Jill Biden, unveiled a mosaic of Chávez that will be on permanent display at the department.

What happened to my country. I didn’t vote for that POS Obama, but a lot of white people did. Are you happy now. Not that he is Black, I didn’t vote for him because I listened to everything that was said about him and I made my decision.I only wish that everyone finds out everything they can about everyone that is running for Office and vote with your head this time. This President has tried to devide Americans at every turn. Blacks against Whites. Rich against poor. Look what he had done with our Military, first he wanted Vets to pay for their own injuries, cutting the number of troops. Cut the defense budget to ribbons. Gave gays the right to be open with their queerness. He has even praised the idiots that call themselves Occupiers. He needs to come out because he is Bi. Both Hillary and Obama has long ties with the gays. just Google Obamas Man Country. there are lots of stories out there about Obama. We need a big change for the better in 2012 . God Bless America

As a union member in the 1960‘s we were asked to help Chavez’s effort with a yes vote thru our local headquarters —— after researching his records I rated him right up there with Quadaffe, Castro and Yassar Arafat so I personally voted no —— Unfortunately the vote passed by a slim margin and the flood of immigrants began to rise !
I view his recent (HONORING) by SOLIS ,as strictly an OBAMA / BIDEN push for minority VOTES !!
By the way, How is that “ Its time for a change” thingy working out for you ?? R. U. READY YET ?

To conflate the plight of the farmworkers and those like Chavez who fought for their rights with Communism is pure ignorance.

By the way, he was an American (born in Arizona) and was a World War II veteran. He also worked to limit immigration from the south because he believed it undermined American workers and exploited American migrant workers. Hey, he sounds like a modern Conservative!!

For all the nitwits who are hating on this guy, you should at least see what it was like for farm workers before they had a union, and why they felt they needed one. From 1960, “Harvest of Shame”: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7087479n

Ah, the old “False Choice” logical fallacy.

You see, folks? If it weren’t for Unions, all farm workers would endure hardship!

In other words, there are only two options, hardship for all farm workers, or unionization. No other choice! Nothing in between. The free market couldn’t have solved the problem on its own. It took Socialists artifically inflating labor costs (passed on as inflated food costs to you and I) in order to solve the problems of “all farm workers”.

Well, thank goodness for that lesson in Marxist debating logic. What else can we solve using this new tool of “reasoned debate”?

That video has been debunked as having many half-truths(complete lies). It was in the 1960′s and the truth left out of the video was that the companies(farmers) built nice homes, fed and schooled the workers. They did this with their own money. The Internet wasn’t available then to bring this to light of day.Nice try Chet, but Sunlight is the best disinfectant

i lived in bakersfield in the early “60′s.
my dad was a field representave for the social security administration and called on the labor camps a couple of times per week. purpose of the visits was to get the farm workers, at the time “braceros” (legal alien workers), social security numbers and get the growers to pay their share into the social security system.
he described in vivid detail the squalid conditions the workers and their families lived in. sewage running in the “streets” (actually no more than paths between shanties) due to overflowing outhouses, bare electric wires feeding open light bulbs, no fresh water, etc.
the plight of the farm worker would not have changed but for the efforts of chavez and others like him.
and he was born in yuma, az.
