Labor Unions Use U.N. Stage to Condemn U.S. for Human Rights ‘Violations’

Representatives from 47 nations are set to gather Friday in Geneva for a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council with plans to address the human rights abuses of one country in particular: the United States of America.  Joining in the airing of grievances against the U.S. are various left-wing interest groups and American labor unions.

On the agenda for Friday’s gathering are the testimonials of select organizations and individuals who, for the first time ever, plan to claim the U.S. is violating global human rights — including allegations of discrimination against Muslims, police brutality and wrongful detention of certain political prisoners. The exercise comes as part of the UN’s “Universal Periodic Review” (UPR), a rotating periodic examination of various countries‘ human rights records by the council’s members — a council which includes such countries as China, Cuba, Libya and Saudi Arabia.

For two hours, the floor of the UN will be open for council members to critique the United States’ record on human rights.  And though many would think the U.S. would receive accolades for arguably doing more on the human rights front than any other nation, Fox News reports that “ill-wishers” are planning to unload a barrage of attacks, including complaints from “some Western human rights organizations that Cuba, Venezuela and Iran are seeking to ‘hijack’ the microphone and stack the speaker’s list with U.S. critics.”

Subjecting the United States to the council’s criticisms was a gamble by the Obama administration when it agreed to join the council; the Bush administration had refused.

So who benefits from the U.S. submission to the UPR process?  Fox News reports:

According to Jim Kelly, director of international affairs for the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies and founder of a blog called Global Governance Watch, the main beneficiaries are likely to be the interest groups that take part in the exercise. “The fact is, they are demanding that the U.S. comply with rights that are already addressed by our own democratic system and laws,” he argues. “They are simply trying to get us to adopt U.N. standards instead of our own. It’s not as if by our participating in the human rights process Cuba is going to clean up its act.”

But according to the U.S. State Department, which is leading a delegation of high-level American diplomats and government officials to Geneva, the Periodic Review is a major opportunity for Washington to lead the rest of the world by example.

“Our taking the process seriously contributes to the universality” of the human rights process, one State Department official told Fox News. “It’s an important opportunity for us to showcase our willingness to expose ourselves in a transparent way” to human rights criticism.

“For us, upholding the process is very important.”

The summary of submissions to the council shows a number of controversial criticisms and suggested remedies, including the recommended adoption of the Employee Free Choice Act, a.k.a. “card check.”  The summary also demands the U.S. adopt the U.N.’s suggested policies without approval of the legislature.

–The U.S. needs to sign, ratify and implement a wide number of United Nations-sponsored human rights conventions, whatever reservations various U.S. governments or courts have had to them;

– All these treaties and conventions should be “self-executing,” meaning that no subsequent U.S. government action should be required for them to go into effect—regardless of the U.S. constitutional separation of powers, and the separation of powers between federal and state governments;

–the U.S. should have national human rights institutions to coordinate and enforce human rights compliance;

–racial, economic and social disparities are still endemic in the U.S. despite its own civil rights laws, and need to be eliminated to meet “international standards” embodied in U.N. treaties. Amnesty International, for example, charges that “racial disparities continue to exist at every stage [U.S.] in the criminal justice system,” and calls for laws to bar “racial profiling in law enforcement.”

According to Fox News, New York-based Center for Human Rights and Global Justice goes further, arguing that since 9/11, “the U.S. has institutionalized discriminatory profiling against members of Muslim, Arab, South Asian and Middle-Eastern communities.” The organization calls for federal laws against profiling “on all grounds, with no exceptions for national security and an in-depth audit of government databases/watchlists.”

–barbaric treatment of citizens by U.S. police is allegedly rife. Again according to Amnesty, U.S. police and custody officials “are rarely prosecuted for abuses,” prison conditions “remain harsh in many states,” and “electroshock weapons are widely used against individuals who do not pose a serious threat, including children, the elderly and people under the influence of drink or drugs.”

–U.S. social conditions are dismal. One submission claims, according to the U.N. summary, that 30% of the U.S. population “lacks an adequate income to meet basic needs,” while another notes that “there is an unequal access in the U.S. to basic amenities such as adequate food, shelter, work, healthcare and education. There is also a lack of affordable housing, job shortages and income insecurity, particularly among minorities and women.”

– native peoples on American soil are badly neglected and need the protection of international treaties, and the U.S. treats immigrants and asylum-seekers badly. At least one organization recommends a ban on deporting indigenous peoples from anywhere in the Americas.

One of the most outspoken contributors to the summary is an organization known as the U.S. Human Rights Network (USHRN), a group formed in 2003 as a “new model for U.S.-based human rights advocacy.”  The group’s report seeks “to raise awareness of the human rights framework within the broader social justice movement, to create linkages between traditional human rights and social justice organizations, and to facilitate sharing of information and resources among a broader network of activists.”

Funding for the network and its Geneva submission apparently comes from the Human Rights Fund, an umbrella group whose steering committee of philanthropies include the Ford Foundation, George Soros’ Open Society Institute, the Overbrook Foundation and an anonymous donor.

Among the network’s membership are some prominent and familiar organizations: the American Friends Service Committee, Fordham University Law Center, the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights. …

The USHRN position paper on U.S. labor relations, however, was submitted by much better-known mainstream organizations. Among them: the AFL-CIO, the Teamsters, the United Steelworkers and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). None are listed as USHRN members.

Among other things, the labor paper points to declining U.S. union membership as a function of discriminatory U.S. labor laws, including the National Labor Relations Act, and declares that “core internationally established labor rights are not adequately protected by state and federal laws that govern the American workplace” and adds that “workers have resorted to international fora to seek redress.”

It says that corporate harassment, threats, unlawful interrogations and retaliatory firings are “standard practice” in U.S. union organizing, and calls on the U.S. to obey “pertinent international instruments” to, among other things, adopt the Employee Free Choice Act, commonly known as “card check,” to ensure all workers get full federal and state labor law protection “regardless of migration status.” It also calls on U.S. governments give broader latitude to allowing public sector labor strikes.

    The important part of the article is that our Constitution,legislatures and courts can be overrode by u.n. resolutions. Soros and the u.n. have been advocating the banning of small arms sales. This means that the 2ND Amendment becomes irrelevant. At least one Supreme Court justice has stated that we should look at international court rulings to determine court cases in the U.S. Welcome to the new world order. Our Constitution and our elctions become null and void and I believe that means a u.n. force can enforce these measures on our soil.

I believe by the positive rhetoric they use, it has fooled many politicians over time and it leads poor poverty uneducated people to be their slaves. The UN and people behind it, hold out the carrot of “Help Here” when actually they are using these people. Explains why Soros wants to legalize drugs, keeps the workers dumb and dependent.

    Oh PALEEEZE!!! American citizens have done so much to assist countries in need—even if the governments are enemies. Numerous circumstances come to mind. We have been refuge for many more. Yes, we have our problems, but our society is consistently working toward relieving-even irradicating many of these.Yes, we still have a great deal of work to do. If we defund the UN, we will have more moneys to assist the medical needs, education–on and on and on unselfishly, The UN desires the new world order. Disgusting that they would allow people like Chavez, Mamoud A., to use this as an insulting sounding board-not as a TRUE human rights consideration body. These countries coould care less about people. Socialistic ideology could care less about people of the world except to subjugate them to their ideologies. Robots–one and all.
    And , the U.S. is assisting, through moneys, to rebuild-renovate this UN building. Send this organization to somewhere else–like Mars. In other words, GO AWAY-GET OUT OF OUR COUNTRY.     The UN is a non-entity to me – what does it do? It certainly does not hold any accountability for it’s resolutions – Bush did and was vilified for doing it when he went into Iraq for violating I believe it’s 17th resolution. It puts on its Human Rights Council state members that presecute their own people for merely disagreeing with those in power. The UN sits on our soil and I truly believe we should scrap it off.

Soros is also in that mix, along with the unions, and a great many of the politicians in DC and across the country. They have their own website and a list of participants. Check it out. Of course, ‘they’ plan on being the ruling elite, and ‘we’ will be the serfs. I think about this a lot, and I don’t come up with a plan to oppose it. If they are going to bypass the congress on these so-called treaties, how do we proceed?       The UN replaced the League of Nations. After WWI Woodrow Wilson joined with other nations for the purpose of forming a collective protective force that would prevent another world war.       The Unions don’t “work for the companies”. The unions are independent of the companies and basically run the labor of the companies through collective bargaining and solidarity. In other words “blackmail”. For example the UAW organized the labor of Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. The union is the main reason for outsourcing of the “big-three” and the main reason for their financial woes. I hope the rank and file union members, the workers who are forced to join the union, who are largely good people will see the light and recognize what their organizations have become. Michigan is about to become a “Right-to-Work” state. The unions hate this but the unions are one of the main reasons that the auto industry has largely moved out of Michigan.

Of course, the Lame Stream Media will conveniently overlook the fact of the “mysterious” deaths in WV during a coal miner strike, the minimum wage non-union members picketing for the unions, the hiring of illegal immigrants at 1/3 of the union wage, but still required to pay full union dues, etc., etc.

      That used to happen. That’s why the union leadership was slick enough to start organizing national unions and even international unions that cover entire industries. You’d essentially have to boycott entire industries. When they were doing it of course their reasoning was to give more collective bargaining power to individuals via larger unions, but it was all about concealing who their members are and where they work.

      Find one big company that advertises in the MSM, and show what Americans can do when they have had enough. Boycott one company hard enough to show others what can happen to them. It’s not practical to boycott all union industries, but a MSN adverstiser is a good place to start. Just a thought.

      Obama pressed the State Department to file the paperwork it did on potential Human Rights Violations in the US for the express purpose of attempting to circumvent the laws of this land – not that he seems to pay much attention to them anyway with his stooge Holder suing everyone and their mother in this country. Obama wants the US on its knees in front of the world in his quest to dismantle this nation. Soros is, of course, right there with Obama pushing his countless ‘Rights’ groups around like pieces on a chess board.

      The US should not be involved with the U.N., period. It has become corrupted to the point of being unrecognizable. Bush was correct to tell them to take a hike. Obama on the other hand loves this organization because it panders to his progressive and liberal ideals – none of which bear out as plausible in implementation in the real world.

      Everyone should pay very close attention to this and should be extremely concerned. This is the continuation of the world bashing the U.S. and now they are getting our own people to do it. They are trying to get us to govern with “international law” and not our own. If this happens our Constitution will become invalid and we will be under a “Global Governance”. Our country has done more for Human Rights in the world than any other nation! And what they are condemning us for is basically that we don’t have Socialism. They are calling it “Social Justice”. Where we allow the government to spread the wealth around so everyone is “equal”. Not “equal” opportunity, because we have that, no…they want everyone to have “equal” housing, food, jobs, pay. We can not allow this to happen or America will be no more.

      Dittos here too. Then throw those people out of the country and sell the property. New York needs the cash. Then again how much will it cost to clean up that toxic waste they leave behind?

      what a total joke! give the UN 12 months to pack up their s**t and get the hell out of Dodge, and sever ALL ties with that “Global Government” wannabee orginization. Cuba on a human rights board? Did I read that right? How much money do we dump into that “snake filled hole” anyway?

      Can someone get rid of these Unions? They are so desperiate now that their purse stings have been cut by Tuesdays elections, they are looking for the next best pocketbook to suck off off…the UN how nice for us…get rid of them too.

      The cure is simple, close the UN on a friday, yank their immunity, seize the building and it’s contents turn it over to the FBI and CIA to sift the paperwork, Guaranteed to find tons of info of actual threats.

      Prosecute the Unions management under RICO, disband and outlaw unions period citing existing labor protection laws in place, and homeland security. The libs can take over GM, we can take the UNIONS just as easily.

      Bring back McCarthy and seek out and blacklist Communists, Marxists, and Socialist where ever they exist in our society.

      I can dream; can’t I ?

      obama is a traitor and a criminal and should be arrested imediately. just who does he think he is? does he think he can turn on this nation and still remain in office? its time for us to all call for his imediate arrest and be held with out bond. i would call this an act of treason.

      That’s right EP. BUT NOW OUR GOVERNMENT IS DIFFERENT, IT IS NOT REFLECTIVE OF THE PEOPLE. It’s starting. We’ve change part of the congress and they are going to fight pack hard to finish the job they started….TAKE DOWN AMERICA AS WE KNEW IT.

      What scares me is not the lies perpatrated, but the possible action they could stir militarily. This could be part of a long plan to take over the US by outside forces. I don’t say this to be a conspiracy theorist, I’m not one, I say this because there are people and individuals in many other counties that have said that the world should do without the US and Israel. There are those in Brittain that still believe we need to be controlled by english parlament, and that the revolutionary war wasn’t really won.

      The point is that there are crazy people out there who do conspire and have vast wealth and power. If they are able to convince enough powers to wrest control from ‘We the People’ they will in a heart beat. George Soros is one of those people.
